Every year or so, someone with inside knowledge announces a date upon which the world will definitely end. So everyone hunkers down, and then the only thing that happens is every radio station plays R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." The apocalyptic event you actually can bank on is an annual occurrence called the Holiday Season. Thus, this. Three Wise Guys: M. Jewish holiday music tends to be dark and depressing - fortunately, Hanukkah is a 'minor' holiday, so it fits!
At last, a holiday song for vegetarians! Hear what critics are calling "the most overstimulating 2 minutes since your uncle made that concerning toast at Thanksgiving dinner".An outtake from Trevor Goober's upcoming holiday EP, "Traditional Christmas Carols for Normal People".
Recently I asked people for another batch of ridiculous ideas for Christmas songs. I got over 70 suggestions and rather than just choose one I decided to do multiple songs and release an EP. The Ridiculous Christmas EP is now available featuring this and three additional tracks. This song was suggested by Scott Morgan who said "How about a parody of Eminem's Stan, writing to Santa?" My first inclination was to reject it because this is a good idea, not a ridiculous idea, but I kept coming back to it. Then I googled to see if anyone else had already done it and yes, several had, including SNL. So I rejected it again. But I couldn't get it out of my head. Eventually I said screw it and just started writing. I got a few other suggestions for songs that I didn't make into full songs but I did use as individual lines in this song. Those were from Steven Shilling and Roberta Maher and are called out in the lyrics. Lyrics: Tom Rockwell Music: Trevor Morgan Vocals: Tom Rockwell, Whitney Morgan, Chris Mezzolesta Parody of "Stan" by Eminem

When Paula Cole released her breezy country/Americana ballad "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" in 1996, she was irritated by the fact her fans missed one key attribute: She'd meant it to be ironic. This tidbit was largely overlooked by her fans, the critics, and even Wikipedia, which notes: "The first two verses explore infatuation and discovery; a bridge expresses disillusionment, and a final verse changes to despair." (Kind of a metaphor for our entire music career, actually.) Of course, that's Wikipedia for you - and looking at the rest of the entry, I'm hard-pressed to find anything else they got right about this song, either. Much like our version. So why the confusion? Maybe, back in the 90s, people didn't know what irony was, until another song came along to explain it: apparently, it's like rai-yeee-ain on your weddingggggg day. Glad we got that cleared up. But here's what I DON'T get. Back in the day - say around the time of Elvis - a whole lotta US states (including California) were actually part of Mexico. (We won them in a poker game.) Today, a lot of American citizens in those states can actually trace their lineage back to that time. So the fact that our government is deporting citizens from states they no longer like anyway, and which used to be Mexico, back to modern-day Mexico, smacks of irony to me. ~ Bob Bad hombres: M. Spaff Sumsion: Lyrics Zelda Pinwheel: Lead and backing vocals Chris Mezzolesta: Kokomo vocals, epilogue Bob Emmet: Concept, all instruments, production, etcetera
While Super Mario was my favorite video game franchise growing up, Zelda replaced it pretty quickly once I discovered Twilight Princess and Wind Waker in the late 2000s. Thiis was followed by about a decade of not having a functioning Nintendo system, but when I bought a Switch I mostly played Breath of the Wild and now mostly Tears of the Kingdom. I'd already written a song about older Zelda games years ago, which I was fortunate to have played on the Dr. Demento show, but every once in a while I'd wonder why I'd spent so much time playing the open world games without writing a song about them. And yet nothing came to mind until Pink Pony Club had been one of the most popular songs in the United States (and probably the world) for a while and it spent a good deal of time running through my head, and then I came up with the basic idea of how the inventory (Link's Load of Stuff) in Tears of the Kingdom seemed too heavy for even the strongest of heroes to carry. It took a while from the moment of inspiration until finishing, but it's here now and I hope you like it. As should be apparent, it's not me on the vocals, but someone I've hired before to anonmously provide vocals for parodies I've written.

As always when Kim Jong Duh is in (what's left of) the white house, the scandals and nightmares come far too quickly and numerously for me to keep up. This song is about air traffic horribleness from earlier this year... and it seems appropriate to drag it out now, with the air traffic controllers on furlough (which might be over before this song gets to you). Oh well. You know me... I have to parody this classic John Denver song every few years. I think this is the fourth one. Wow. This is both a parody and a cover song! The original parody is by our beloved Filker King, Tom Smith. Go to Tom Smith's bandcamp page to listen to the orig... er, the parody. In the process of getting ready to participate the Filker Song Swap "Cover to Cover: volume 3" various artists albums (organized by fellow Fump artist Madison Metricula Roberts), the randomizer happened to choose that I should cover a song by fellow Fump artist Tom Smith. I was given a choice of 2 songs, but of course I picked the one that is a parody of a song from my favorite musical, "The Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan (the original song being officially entitled "Oh Better Far to Live and Die" but probably better known as "Pirate King"). Anyway, you should really look up the Filker Song Swap albums as well! They're on Bandcamp and several other locations. And then I asked Luke Ski for help getting a group of people together to do backing vocals, but he did such a good job on them by himself that I no longer felt an entire group was needed! And in case you somehow didn't figure this out, the subject matter of the song is Jack Skellington, the lead character of the 1993 Tim Burton stop-motion Halloween film "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Instrumental (real accordion and a Suzuki Andes 25F recorder keyboard!!), mixing and mastering by the wonderful Joe Jakubowski. Lyrics by Tom Smith. Lead vocals by Carrie Dahlby. Backing vocals and "gobble gobble" sound effect by Luke Ski.
At some point it's gonna happen. Will you be ready?

When I discovered that Weird Al was actually on the bill at the most eclectic festival lineup I'd ever seen ("I can see Agnostic Front and Weird Al on the same day?!?" was my initial response) I had to drop "Start a Pac-Man-related cult" from my bucket list to make room for "participate in a Weird Al pit."* This has been one of many situational exceptions I've had to make to my well-documented "Too Old For The Pit" rule. I made perhaps too many exceptions during the weekend of Riot Fest, as my ribs remain bruised (presumably from Sunday's Screeching Weasel prancings,) but I appear to have survived. Highlights that I was unable to fit into the song: 1. A dude dressed as a banana in said pit 2. A dude dressed as Jesus in said pit (I told him "Hey! I read your book!") 3. Moshing to "Ricky." Seriously. "Ricky." 4. Watching Steve Jay and Jim West occasionally take photos of said pit 5. Watching a dude on the edge of said pit explain to his teenaged daughter the cardinal rule of "someone goes down, you help them up." Felt that in my soul. Special thanks to Al, whose birthday is next week. And also to my wife, for encouraging me to go to this thing. And to MC Lars for absolving me of the inadvertent theft of his "damn, son" bit. And to Dr. Demento for the years upon years of support...it just hit me that this is the first song I've ever released that has NO chance whatsoever of being played on the Dr. Demento show. But damned if he didn't end the show strong as hell, and on his own terms. (Barry, if you're reading this, all the best in your retirement.) * Apologies to anyone who has already converted their worldly posessions to tokens in anticipation of said cult. No refunds. As I'm sure everyone who frequents this site already knows all too well, The Dr. Demento Show comes to an end this weekend after 55 glorious years of mad music and crazy comedy. And what better way to pay tribute to such a momentous finale than by attempting to recap the entire history of the good doctor's show - and thus, ostensibly the entire history of comedy music itself - into an eight-and-a-half-minute parody of Don McLean's classic rock staple "American Pie?" From the recently-released compilation album Fruits of the Smogberry Trees: The FuMP's Tribute to Dr. Demento, this song was a true labor of love. Barret Hansen, aka Dr. Demento, has enriched my life and livelihood far more than I can easily express, but this song was my attempt at expressing it anyway, and I hope you all enjoy it. Above all, don't you ever DARE forget to STAY DEEEEEEEEEEMENTED!!!! Sometimes you just gotta vent for a minute. Or, well, a minute and 12 seconds. ("Orwell." Ha.) Perhaps you know the original. The parody was dreamed up (i.e., waking-nightmared up) by Spaff, and all the music and vocals were performed by Robert Lund. Both of whom, by the time you read this, will probably have been deported to Uganda. Hopefully the capital has an Abbey Road.

"All good things come to an end." I really despise that saying, but I'm afraid it's undeniable. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way as the Good Doctor (with the help of Jeff Morris) puts together his final two shows. The Doctor Demento Show has been a hugely important part of my life since I first tuned in back in the 1970s, under the covers on a Sunday night when I was supposed to be asleep. His devotion to all things musical and to all things silly had never been (and will never be) equaled. Thank you, Barret Hansen, for everything you've dedicated your life to. And another thank you, Doctor, for playing (and premiering) this song as part of your penultimate broadcast on October 4, 2025. I didn't think I'd ever get another new song on your show, but you and Jeff squeezed this in, and I really appreciate it! And speaking of Jeff... Jeff Morris kindly and patiently worked with me on this while in the midst of the busiest period imaginable. Huge thanks to you Jeff, for all you do in the name of deeeeeeeeeemented music!
