IGGNite DNA Founders Nancy Landini and Lisa Needler are back to speak about a case in Fort Wayne, Indiana that they helped to solve. In 1992, a construction worker found the dead body of a young pregnant woman in a house under renovation. Recently, Nancy and Lisa worked with local authorities to identify her as Tabetha Ann Murlin. They'll share that story, along with other topics around investigative genealogy, in their conversation with The Murder Sheet. Episode 105 DOE: ID 'Mary Jane Doe' Tabetha Slain Murlin In may, 1992, a construction worker renovating a home in Fort Wayne, Indiana made a gruesome discovery. In the flooded basement of the home, he discovered a woman's body wrapped in a blanket. Investigators were unable to determine an exact cause of death due to the condition of her remains, although they did make one important discovery; she was about 26 weeks pregnant when she died. Although police suspected foul play, they didn't have much in the way of leads to ID a suspect in her death, and they didn't even know who she was. Efforts to ID her came up empty, and she was laid to rest with the moniker 'Mary Jane Doe'. Decades would pass before DNA & genealogy would finally provide some answers by late 2023; the dead woman was Tabetha Slain Murlin who was about 23 when she died. Her family had lost contact with her in the late 1980s, and although they tried to look for her over the next three decades, they had no luck, and presumed the worst. Now, police know who Tabetha is, but if she met with foul play, they don't knew who it was at the hands of. They would also like to determine the identity of her baby's father, and perhaps genealogy will one day help them do that. Anyone with information on what led to Tabetha Murlin's death should reach out to authorities at 260-427-1201 for the Fort Wayne Police Detective Bureau; Fort Wayne CrimeStoppers at 260-436-7867; or report an anonymous tip using the P3Tips mobile app. After more than three decades, 'Mary Jane Doe' finally has her name back; it's Tabetha Slain Murlin, and this is her story. Trigger Warning: This episode deals with domestic violence, survivors and offenders, and the military. Our TCFV colleague Tabetha joins us today to explore issues of domestic violence in the military. Tabetha uses her experience and expertise in the military, as a law enforcement officer, and as a survivor advocate to compare and contrast the military response to domestic violence with civilian responses. She points out some surprising dimensions to this conversation that might not occur to civilians, such as the impact of foreign residence, law enforcement differences, and more, while also shouting out some meaningful progress and improvements that have been made in recent years. Tabetha advocates for compassionate and survivor-centered solutions, and at the end of the episode, she shares a little of her vision and hopes for the future. The aftermath of a meteorite striking the surface of a planetary body leaves behind a circular depression in the ground and plumes of dust and rock. The energy left over in the crater can heat up the water that passes through the rocks, creating an environment that could have been responsible for the emergence of microbial life on Earth over 3 billion years ago. In this episode, hosts Gavin Tolometti and Rhys Paterson talk with Earth and Planetary Science M.Sc student Tabetha Shepphard about how she studies the composition of fluids trapped within minerals from the West Clearwater impact structure in Quebec, Canada to learn about hydrothermal systems that developed after the impact event almost 290 million years ago. NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. This is our time to meet and talk about what's important to you in the fast-paced, sometimes puzzling, but always compelling world of project management. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are two of the most compelling individuals I know, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. And Andy, it looks like we have another first here on Manage This. This is our first guest to actually have a star named after her. ANDY CROWE: This is going to be fascinating to dig into today, Nick. And I'm looking forward to it, not just from the project standpoint, but also just out of pure curiosity about this. This is really going to be interesting. NICK WALKER: Well, Tabetha Boyajian is joining us via Skype from Louisiana State University, where she's a professor and astronomer. She has a degree from the College of Charleston and a Ph.D. from Georgia State University. She studied the sizes of nearby stars similar to the sun using Georgia State's CHARA array, located at Mount Wilson Observatory in Southern California. She was awarded a Hubble Fellowship designed to encourage promising scientists in their independent research. She was the lead author of the 2015 paper titled “Where's the Flux?” which investigated the highly unusual light curve of the star known as Tabby's Star, named in her honor. Tabetha, it's a privilege to have you with us here on Manage This. TABETHA BOYAJIAN: Oh, thank you. It's nice to talk to y'all. NICK WALKER: Now, before we get into the details of your project, I should say that I recognize the official name of Tabby's Star is KIC 8462852. But do you mind if we just continue to call it Tabby's Star? TABETHA BOYAJIAN: Yeah, that's certainly fine. It doesn't really roll off your tongue when you say KIC 8462852; right? NICK WALKER: It really doesn't. But so cool to have a star named after you. How did that come about? TABETHA BOYAJIAN: It was probably by accident, I suppose. The star got, well, the story of it went a little viral. And a colleague of mine was talking to a reporter; and, instead of saying “KIC 8462852,” he said “Tabby's Star.” And that reporter put it into print, and then it just kind of caught on after that. NICK WALKER: Well, if stars can be celebrities, this one surely qualifies because it's been sort of the center of this mystery in science circles. It seems that every so often the past few months the star has become dimmer, a lot dimmer, sometimes for days at a time. Can you give us some background on the star and the current project surrounding it? TABETHA BOYAJIAN: Yeah, well, it all started with the NASA Kepler Mission. So this was a mission launched in 2009 to find planets around stars. And what it did is it stared at a single piece of sky for four years straight, taking brightness measurements of over 100,000 stars in that one tiny field. And it was looking for the chance alignment of a planet to be crossing in front of a star. So we would see it periodically dim the starlight that we were observing. And it did that, and it did that very, very well. And that's how this star was identified, because this star was one of the 100,000 or so that it looked at. And instead of seeing a periodic small drop in the star's brightness with time, this star had very irregular drops in its brightness. NICK WALKER: So I know that there have been a lot of theories that have come out about why this is happening, some of them a little maybe farfetched. ANDY CROWE: Oh, come on, Nick. Farfetched? Alien megastructures? Dyson Spheres? That's not farfetched. NICK WALKER: Okay, you said it, you said it. ANDY CROWE: Or dust clouds, or comets, yeah. There's a lot of possibility here. BILL YATES: A dimmer switch. ANDY CROWE: It's a big universe, and that's the point. BILL YATES: It is, it is.

In this Q&A-style episode, Kara welcomes returning guest and "sidekick in crime," Tabetha Hedrick for another edition of Ask Kara & Tabetha Anything! Kara and Tabetha answer questions from live video audience during the live version of Power Purls Podcast, airing every Friday on the Power Purls Facebook page. Click here to watch the video and chime in with your own questions, or leave them in the comments below. "How you put it all together thorough your own style, voice, and construction is what makes a design unique." Episode highlights Judy asks: "How does one go about becoming a stitcher?" Tabetha answers: It's all about reaching out and testing patterns. Kara answers: just get in there-- don't wait for all the ducks to be in a row! Fiber Boss Collective is a great resource for designers, knitters, with lots of activity about sample knitting and indie dyer resources. Why become a person of value by helping others in fiber groups will help you grow relationships. Why Ravelry is a good resource if you want to get into test knitting. Robin asks: "I am a combination knitter and I would like to know which stitches I need to do differently in order to follow a pattern and/or have my knitting turn out looking correct." Kara answers: If you are a combination knitter, purling English and knitting in Continental is a good idea because purling Continental can sometimes cause stitches to slant while working in Stockinette Stitch. Lousetta asks: "What makes a design unique and/or how many differences in a pattern makes it new? When can a designer claim it as a new submission? Tabetha answers: How you put it together thorough your own style, voice and construction is what makes a design unique. One of the biggest questions most new designers have is knowing if it's allowable to use stitch patterns from stitch dictionaries to integrate into a new design. Jennifer asks: "How did you get started in the knitting/yarn industry? and how long did it take you to gain a following? I just designed & published my first pattern (working on my second one now) and I have a 2x a week vlog but I am so new that I do not have a large following. Help!" Kara answers: focus on building community and the big "P" word -- PATIENCE and why this is essential in the beginning. It's about creating a community and growing this overtime. It doesn't take a huge following to make a sustainable living. Tabetha answers: keep on designing, and give personalized attention with yarn companies. Don't give up! Kara shares why it's beneficial to look outside of the fiber world and gather ideas from mainstream online business people. Today is a bit special and different from the other weekly episodes. Today, we are joined by our very own Design Director for Knitwear at SweetGeorgia Yarns, Tabetha Hedrick. Tabetha is a very accomplished knitwear designer, photographer, blogger, writer, editor and more. She's been working with us at SweetGeorgia over the past year and a half now, to really focus on creating knitwear design patterns that really bring out the best the our hand-dyed yarns. The last time we spoke was the Holiday launch LAST YEAR, so I thought we should catch up with Tabetha and see what she's been doing since then.
We've gone a little crazy pants and broadcasted live on Facebook, and... turned it into this podcast episode! with Tabetha Hedrick, Design Director of Sweet Georgia Yarns. I thought it would be an interactive way to bring you another edition of Ask Kara & Tabetha Anything. We answer a listener question about pattern grading and how to create balance between life, work and finding time for our knitting. If you want to watch the original video broadcast, you can check it out, and you can also catch me live at 12pm EST Fridays, on Facebook.com/PowerPurlsPodcast. To watch past broadcasts, you can find them in the video library on the Power Purls Facebook page. Episode highlights: How we are turning the video version of Unplugged into a podcast episode. When it comes to grading (sizing) patterns, is this the designer's or the publisher's job? Sizing standards for designers and hobby knitters: www.craftyarncouncil.org Does the publisher provide a tech editor for designers patterns? When to hire a tech editor to size your patterns. Kara and Tabetha debate this topic! Work/life balance is learning to "take turns" as Crochet! editor Ellen Gormley explains in episode 021 You can do everything you want, but just not at the same time. We're looking for a way to put everything in a neat box, but we live in an imperfect. If balance is a myth, what can we do what matters most in the moment. Learning to say no and practicing acceptance because we can't control the universe.

Meet Tabetha Hedrick, who I like to fondly call my Creative Knitting magazine "sidekick in crime." She is also the new Design Director at Sweet Georgia Yarns and has been published in numerous books, magazines, and yarn company collections and designs distinctively-classic hand-knitting patterns. You can also find Tabetha spinning yarn, creating some of her magnificent zen tangling, and teaching knitting, all while being a busy wife and mother to two gorgeous girls. Tabetha lives by the belief that joy comes when fully participating in the present moment and "adding a dose of design in the fiber realm that takes that joy to pure bliss," says Tabetha. Kara and Tabetha also talk about the importance of a clear sketch, a swatch, the schematic and why it’s so important to articulate your vision clearly and they also answer one of the most daunting questions new designers often ask: I want to start designing, but I don’t understand how to grade my pattern? Download In this episode of Fashion Forward Teens one of the fashion twins gets a new job, Toms lands a new partner in crime, Versace gets a face lift, Channel hits the big screen, the Beckham’s get their charity on. I also shine a spot light on one of my favorite brands and give a few fashion tips. In The News Ashley Olsen has become the newest addition to the CFDA, Council of Fashion Designers of America. She joins the ranks of designers like Teohlee Ten, Kenneth Cole, Isabel Toledo, Kate Spade, Deborah Lloyd, and Prabal Gurung. A new fashion alliance has been made, and shoes will never be the same again. Toms, the amazingly comfortable slip-ons that we teens love so much, has collaborated with Tabitha Simmons to create a collection of footwear that’s out of this world! Her beuatiful prints have transformed toms, but how did they meet? What inspired them? Well, Blake mycoskie, the founder of toms, and Simmons hit it off in New York, but it wasn’t the popularity of Toms or Blake, it was Tom’s buy a pair give a pair deal that lured her in. She loved it so much, that she even spent a week in Honduras helping with one of their giving projects. Tabetha’s crazy designs mixed with tom’s simple comfortable feel seems like a little much, but the collaboration works really well. There’s even one print, the I love you print, that’s inspired by tabetha’s children and the love letters she would send them when she was away. Versace proudly confirms Lady Gaga as the face of SS14 campaign. Gaga is to be in magazines starting January 2014. Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace have been friends for some time now and Gaga even has a song called Donatella. Chanel will be played by Geralding Chaplin, the daughter of Charlie Chaplin. This film will center around the life and career of Chanel during the 1954 reopening of her couture house in Paris. Spotlight Brand Forever 21 is, according to Teen Vouge, the top most popular brand for teens. Forever 21 opened April 21, 1984 and has been growing every since. The have had their share of contversy with claims of copyright and labor law violations but with their popularity amoung teens it looks like their success will continue. Fashion Tip Everyone knows vintage is totally chic. A jazzy fedora or some pearls, you decide. This episode’s tip is add a vitage touch. Go down to your local consignment shop and pick something out, because old is new. Accessories What’s the one accessorie must-have this season? Velvet shoes!! strappy heels, flats it doesn’t matter. Their totally cute and will go with pretty much anything. Jeans, dresses, you name it! Ashley Granata, F I T grad and textile designer, recently inherited her grandmothers scarf collection, and has done something amazing with it. After her grandmother passed away, Ashley learned that she had been a cancer survivor. Then, she got the idea to give cancer patients going through chemotherapy a little something to get through it. For every $50 raised by her Ashley Jeanne project, she gives a scarf to a patient at Brooklyn Hospital. That way some of these patients who are not only going through this, but are also losing their apperance, can control something in their life, how they look. Boys Fashion Some guys are always wondering, How can I dress to impress? What gets a girl’s attention? Well You don’t have to wear leather pants or dress like your from the 80’s. All you have to do is dress nicely and if you can’t do that on your own, get a girl’s advice. Your tip for this episode is ditch the jeans. No not permanently, just every once in a while. In my opinion, guys who wear more than just one pair of jeans all the time have some style. I mean, don’t get me wrong, some of you do look good in your old faded blue jeans, but whats wrong with khakis or something else, but if you just have to wear jeans, stick to the kind that fit. Oversized jeans are not in!
