The Guardian has used voluntary reader contributions as a bulwark of its unique model that blends philanthropy, advertising and voluntary contributions. In the U.S., The Guardian now generates 57%, or $33 million, of its revenue from voluntary contributions, either one-off or recurring. On this week's episode of The Rebooting Show, I spoke with Steve Sachs, The Guardian's U.S. managing director and veteran of non-profit news models, about this approach and how extensible it is for news publishers.
Steve Sachs spent his years after college playing in a band. Designing flyers, merch and album covers eventually led him to a job in marketing, but after a few years in the field, he needed a change.Prior to marketing, Steve worked with seniors living with memory impairment, and as a vocational trainer for young adults with special needs. He also volunteered at a soup kitchen, playing music with people experiencing homelessness. He learned firsthand that we cannot effectively help others until we truly understand them. Combining those lessons with his background in visual design led Steve to UX (user experience): "I see UX as a practice that lives at the intersection of empathy and creativity. As it turns out, that's where I've always lived, too."Links: NGS (feat. Ian Garwood) rap parody. In this episode, Steve guides Joe on an illuminating journey into the expanding consciousness of dorm-room pop singer/producer turned poet and podcast philosopher Mike Posner through a thorough critical exegesis of his 2015 song 'I Took A Pill in Ibiza' to celebrate the start of his highly publicized walk around the entire United States (no, really).
