Jack Tame: One more Commonwealth Games in 2030- and then no more

I'm one of these people who every four years, vacillates over the value of the Commonwealth Games. ‘They're outdated!' I think, before the competition starts. ‘They're a relic of the past!' ‘What's the point in sending our best athletes to a global competition that's missing 130 countries?' But then, truthfully, the competition begins and inevitably, I lean in. A couple of golds in a couple of unlikely sports, and all of a sudden I'm sold again. The Commonwealth Games are the Homebrand Olympics. But truthfully, it's the fact the  Commonwealth Games always seemed a bit budgo that makes them so fun. Our athletes get to experience the bonding and camaraderie of a Games Village without the same intensity and pressure of the Olympics. And for sports like netball, lawn bowls and squash- which aren't played at the Olympics- it's a really massive occasion. That being said, how many of New Zealand's 20 gold medallists from last year's games can you name off the top of your head? And how many of us, if unprompted, can even remember where the games were held? Victoria's right. Hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games is not worth $6 or $7 billion. It follows in the footsteps of Durban, which pulled out of hosting last year's games because of financial pressures. In an age where so many different things compete for our attention, justifying the cost of hosting an event like the Commonwealth Games is going to get more and more difficult. I suspect it'll get harder and harder for cities to justify all manner of events, even the Olympics.  That leaves two options, I reckon. The first is that you could host the games in one city, every four years. London being the obvious choice. The second is that in 2030- the Centenary Commonwealth Games- the Commonwealth associations pull together for one last great hurrah. Host it in Hamilton, Ontario, the same place as they hosted the very first games in 1930. Put on an almighty show, a Commonwealth Games for the ages. And make it the last. Episode 118 is our tribute to the late, great Tame One. We love doing tributes on Take It Personal, but we absolutely hate having to do a tribute them under these conditions. We've lost many great artists over the years like Biz Markie, Kangol Kid, MF DOOM, Prince Markie Dee, Gift of Gab, Shock G, Zumbi, Black Rob, Double K, Len Hub (The Roots), Malik B, DJ Kay Slay, Coolio, Takeoff, Pop Smoke, Hurricane G, Ecstasy, Blacastan and Don Newkirk to name a few. And it feels like we're still getting over the loss of Prodigy, Phife Dawg, Sean Price, Pimp C and Guru. On this episode, we're honoring the art created by Rahem Brown, better known as Tame One, one half of the Artifacts and an intricate part of New Jersey hip-hop movement. Tame entered our lives in the early 90s with witty lyrics, an appreciation for graffiti and a passion for hip-hop. He went on to give us two remarkable albums with El Da Sensei as the Artifacts before he took a journey into his solo career. On this tribute we're showcasing everything from the early days with El and Redman to the Eastern Conference days. We got everything from the Leak Bros to The Weathermen to all his great collabos with artists like Del, Sean Price, Hussein Fatal, Yak Ballz and Govna Mattic. This is our Tame One Tribute. We hope you enjoy it! Before we get into the show we send our condolences to Aaron Carter, Tame One & Hurricane G. Unfortunately they knew more about Aaron then either of the latter mentioned. We discuss Voting, Pa run and not voting for Oz, How the Dems came together over Abortion. Also we touch on Russia thinking the Ukraine was sweet and losing the takeover. Tevin Campbell gets mention in the same sentence as Frank Ocean. Sidebar it had nothing to do with nothing but fun none the less. Kyrie Irving suspension and LeBron back tracking his throwing of Kyrie under the bus. Kareem Abdul Jabbar weighs in on the situation as well. Brittany Griner update, not so good news. Isiah Thomas wants a public apology from Jordan which he knows will never happen. Miles Bridges puts a restraining order out on his ex GF after stalking him and stealing his dog. Which leads to me asking if the guys would put a restraining order out on a female, which then leads to me asking if they would ever take on their Girlfriends last name in marriage. You gotta hear their answers. Lil Scrappy tells Momma Dee she ruined his life. Reality tv updates, Method Man, Snoop Dogg, and R. Kelly updates. And a whole lot more on this fun filled show. But before we get started, we have to take time to acknowledge the late, great, Tame One. This is becoming way too familiar, but we've lost yet another legend in hip-hop. Real weirdos are hard to find. Sure there are rappers who attempt to project strangeness but the vast majority come across inauthentic or unlistenable (or both). Every so often a true eccentric grabs the mic and reorients our ideas about how wavy this art form can be. Fatboi Sharif is one such artist. Verbose, macabre, and enigmatic the New Jersey rapper has amassed a devoted following over the past couple years by releasing a string of authentically weird joints with producers like Roper Williams and Lungs/Lonesword. His latest offering Preaching in Havana is a collaboration with producer Noface. The duo have crafted a project that is eerie and unsettling in all the right ways. Hosts Nate Le Blanc and David Ma talk to Sharif and Noface about how Havana came into being and the mystique they have both cultivated. During the into segment Demone and Nate talk about Eminem's Rock and Rock Hall of Fame Induction and the tragic passings of Tame One and Hurricane G.  As a member of the Newark, New Jersey group Artifacts alongside Tame One and DJ Kaos, El Da Sensei is responsible for some bona fide 90s hip hop classics, including "C'mon with the Git Down” and "Wrong Side of da Tracks," the group's homage to the art of graffiti. After Artifacts split up following their second album 'That's Them' in 1997, El went on to have a prolific solo career, releasing nearly a dozen projects and consistently touring the globe on his own as well as with Polish hip hop duo The Returners. El's a true working class emcee, and his dedication to his craft as a writer and as an independent artist has granted him a pretty unique experience that we uncover throughout this conversation. We also talk a little bit about the impromptu Artifacts reunion in 2009 that brought El and Tame together and set the stage for their upcoming third Artifacts album, produced entirely by Buckwild and carrying the torch for DJ Kaos, who unfortunately passed away in 2019 ; the album is scheduled to be released later this year. In this episode, we discuss: "Speakin'" ('Relax, Relate, Release', 2003) "Live Noise" feat. Akrobatik (w/ The Returners, 'GT2: Nu World', 2010) "Wrong Side of Da Tracks" (Artifacts, 'Between a Rock and a Hard Place', 1994) "It Takes Two" (w/ Sadat X, 'XL,' 2018) "Money" feat Roc Marciano and Reef the Lost Cause ('The Money EP', 2009) "Got Fire" (w/ The Returners, 'Global Takeover', 2008) "31 Bumrush" (Artifacts, 'That's Them,' 1997) El Da Sensei: instagram.com/senseifromnj cantknocktheshuffle.com questionshiphop.com instagram.com/seandammit  twitter.com/seandammit  Email: cantknocktheshuffle@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. Jack Tame: One year on from Covid-19 arriving into New Zealand

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2021 5:01

The public health experts knew it was coming. Senior ministers knew it was coming. Were they as prepared as they might have been? No. But then, who in New Zealand was back at the end of February 2020?And then it came through. A woman fresh back from Iran. Quite possibly not our first case, but our first confirmed case of Covid-19.That was a year ago.In that time, we have objectively enjoyed a much better life than most other people on Earth. Sure, we’ve had lockdowns. We’ve had community outbreaks. We’ve had deaths. People have lost jobs. Businesses have gone under. At an individual level, if you’ve suffered a dramatic change in your life, or lost a loved one to Covid-19, these words won’t be much comfort. But the can be no disputing the fact... the overall standard of living in New Zealand in the year since our first case, has been so much better than pretty much anywhere else. While Europe and America have been hunkered down in months-long lockdowns, and refrigerated trucks have been turned into overflow morgues, we’ve been at Six60 concerts or out for birthday dinners. To what and to whom do we owe that year? It’s obvious isn’t it?We’ve benefited from a few things. Circumstance. Good leadership. Good luck. We’re an island nation three thousand kilometres from anywhere else. We’re not jammed into cities like sardines. We’re also a nation of generally reasonable and sensible people. We have a few muppets, sure, but most of us are prepared to heed public health warnings and wear a mask if we’re told to.From the government perspective, they’ve done a few things especially well. Jacinda Ardern’s communication skills are her single-greatest strength and she has used those skills to maximum effect. The Director General of Health is a similarly talented communicator and together they make an incredibly effective tag team. The strategy around the Alert Level system seems so simple... but it’s a work of genius. It gives us all a common language. The viology of Covid-19 is super complex, but kids understand the Alert Level system. And even though the rules have changed and things have moved around... it doesn’t matter. The Alert Level system gives us a story. Together we can see progress.Grant Robertson was fast to act and our economy today is in a far, far better place than most analysts thought it would be. Unemployment is under 5%. GDP and government revenues are higher than expected. That wage support scheme, which had a very low barrier to entry, has been a godsend. Even TVNZ is in a position to pay $5 million back!Of course, it hasn’t been a faultless effort. The public health response has had snares and hitches. I still find it inexcusable that for months we didn’t have a better system for ensuring frontline staff were being regularly tested. That we didn’t have a greater outbreaks as a result seems pretty remarkable, given how insidious this virus is. As a result of our economic strategy, the housing market is experiencing wild inflation and we’ll be living with the impact for years to come. The people most likely to lose their jobs were the people who were already at the bottom of the heap.So. One year. Vaccine distribution has begun. The bubble with Rarotonga is opening. Progress comes slow, but it’s progress nonetheless.Clearly it’ll take years before we can truly judge the overall Covid-19 response. But you don’t have to look too far to see how bad things could have been. And no matter what happens from now, no matter how long it takes us to reopen borders and get back to life as it once was, no one can take that year away from us.

Steve Sachs spent his years after college playing in a band. Designing flyers, merch and album covers eventually led him to a job in marketing, but after a few years in the field, he needed a change.Prior to marketing, Steve worked with seniors living with memory impairment, and as a vocational trainer for young adults with special needs. He also volunteered at a soup kitchen, playing music with people experiencing homelessness. He learned firsthand that we cannot effectively help others until we truly understand them. Combining those lessons with his background in visual design led Steve to UX (user experience):  "I see UX as a practice that lives at the intersection of empathy and creativity. There aren’t many rappers deserving of a 7 hour tribute, but we’re talking Redman here. On part 2, we air our exclusive Redman interview along with countless hours of music covering his looseys, remixes and ridiculously dope collabos. We remind you how the Def Squad was a force to be reckoned with. The chemistry between Erick, Keith and Redman was a thing of beauty. We also have the Wu features, the collabos with Tame One, Kris Kross, Pete Rock, M.O.P., Meth, Eightball, Scarface and Snoop Dogg. And you know we had to throw in some surprises, too. I once said in jest we’re the “King of The Tributes,” but after this, Preem, Pete Rock, Pharoahe Monch, Wu-Tang, KRS-One, Prodigy, Atmosphere, Southern, West Coast, Indie, Philly Hip-Hop and The Native Tongues tribute, it just might be the truth.

Here's an afternoon fill-in I did for The Hey Man while he was off on vacation! January 31st is National Gorilla Suit Day! We kicked things off addressing some questions on YahooAnswers, ranging from the possibility of humans and apes interbreeding, to how to pursue a platonic friendship with a gorilla.
