One element of sustainable healthcare is simply reducing the amount of healthcare you're doing by not doing the things that are of no value to patients. However, how do we do this in practice? And why is it often so hard? What is the role of fear in this discussion? These are all questions we will discuss in this episode. To help us with this we'll be joined by Prof Ben Newell (cognitive psychologist from University of New South Wales, whose research interest includes judgement and decision making). and Dr Lucas Chartier, emergency medicine physician at the University Health Network in Toronto. Ben Newell also has also recently released a book, Open Minded, co-authored with David Shanks on the role of the unconscious mind in our decisions making

A unique ecosystem, a rare habitat for wildlife, and a crucial carbon store, the UK's uplands are all of these things… we've spent the last four episodes learning about how they are changing and what that might mean. But when it comes to steering that change, who exactly is at the wheel? This is not a sit-down studio interview podcast. Over the coming weeks, we'll join Byron and Sarah as they travel the country and get out on the hills, meeting guests ranging from soil scientists, ecologists and rewilding enthusiasts to gamekeepers, chefs, crofters and deer managers. It's October, and the red deer rut is well underway. The biggest, strongest males are vying for position to pass on their genes, and as the leaves turn to the browns of autumn, and the salmon push on upstream to spawn, it is as captivating as it is beautiful. We have spent the first few episodes focusing on people and our impacts on the uplands, but in this episode, we turn our attention more to the wildlife here. What role will they play in our future decisions as to how we use this landscape? This is not a sit-down studio interview podcast. Over the coming weeks, we'll join Byron and Sarah as they travel the country and get out on the hills, meeting guests ranging from soil scientists, ecologists and rewilding enthusiasts to gamekeepers, chefs, crofters and deer managers. Earlier in the year, I travelled into the hills, following lines of smoke drifting down the glens. It's muirburn season, where gamekeepers like Will Curr burn old heather to encourage new growth. But this practice is controversial, and to try and get to the bottom of why, I wanted to see it for myself. To understand the picture more fully, Sarah Roberts and I sought out a broad spectrum of voices, expertise and opinions, from the Scottish Fire Service to government agencies and the latest science. Are we doing enough to protect our uplands from the risk of fire, and in the process, are we damaging the climate with how we manage the land? All this in episode three of the British Ulands Podcast. Our carbon-rich peatlands are now exposed to a changing climate and the impacts of human intervention. Many want to see more trees in the uplands, but why aren't there already? In episode 2 of the British Uplands podcast, we explore the history of the uplands, both culturally and ecologically. Who lives and works here and how do they feel about the future of the uplands. Between ambitious tree planting targets, wind farm construction and efforts to restore damaged peatland, the British Uplands Podcast sees conservation journalists Byron Pace and Sarah Roberts explore the conflict between these difficult choices. A landscape thousands of years in the making, facing an uncertain future. Britain's uplands and the peat beneath it form one of the most unique, valuable and vulnerable ecosystems in the world. New Zealand's chief censor, David Shanks, is stepping down from the job today after five years. It's a confronting job for anyone, and he's likely to be remembered as the man who banned the video of the Christchurch mosque attacks in 2019, shot by the killer. Shanks spoke to Susie Ferguson.
Q&A on the series 61st Street with actor Tosin Cole. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Moses Johnson, a promising Black high school athlete, gets swept up in the Chicago criminal justice system when he is arrested as a supposed gang member after an officer dies during a drug bust gone wrong. Franklin Roberts, who has promised his wife that he will retire as a public defender, takes on Johnson's case because he recognizes its potential to upend the entire Chicago judicial system, challenging the institutional racism and endemic corruption at its heart. The series was informed by deep research into the city's history, as well as the personal experiences of executive producer-writer J. David Shanks, who grew up as a young Black man on the South Side and later became a Chicago police officer before entering the world of film and TV.
On this week's episode of the podcast, we're looking at terrorist designation. We analyse different countries' designation systems and discuss how they can be improved. We consider the role designation plays in the fight against terrorism and how it can be used as a tool to tackle terrorist content online. Anne Craanen is joined by two experts on designation, firstly Dr. Anna Meier who is an Assistant Professor of political science and international relations at the University of Nottingham. Anna studies counterterrorism in Germany and the United States, with a particular interest in white supremacist violence and proscription policy. Anne also speaks to Jason Blazakis, Professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) and former Director of the Counterterrorism Finance and Designations Office, Bureau of Counterterrorism, U.S. Department of State. Jason is also a Senior Advisor at The Soufan Group. Our other guest this week is David Shanks who is the Chief Censor of the New Zealand Classification Office. David's role as part of this media regulator includes making determinations about the legality of the most extreme and violent terrorist content. He gives us a fascinating insight into some of the dilemmas this responsibility entails and on what can be done to better tackle terrorist content online. We also get insight from Archie Macfarlane, who is a Junior Research Analyst at Tech Against Terrorism, on the work TAT has been doing on designation. To find out more about Tech Against Terrorism and our work, visit techagainstterrorism.org or follow us on Twitter @techvsterrorism, where you can find resources on this topic.

A new nationwide survey has shone a light on the rise of misinformation and the concern New Zealanders have about it. The research commissioned by the Classification Office has found exposure to false or misleading information is common. Around half of respondents believed in at least one false idea among a range presented in the survey, such as "Covid 19 is caused by 5G", "vaccines are ineffective and unsafe" and "climate change is not caused by human activity". The chief censor, David Shanks, says we're living in the age of the infodemic, and misinformation is undermining trust in traditional sources of information.

SELWYN JONES BIO Born in 1966 to sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South, Selwyn Miles Jones was the youngest of seventeen children. In the small town of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Selwyn, and his siblings toiled alongside their parents in the tobacco fields and endured the most desolate and harsh conditions imaginable. The poverty, disrespect, hatred and disenfranchisement Selwyn and his family experienced was unimaginable to most, yet commonplace for many Black farming families.Selwyn realized early on that sharecropping was yet another version of enslavement. His mother made sure to show her children that there was a better life out there for them and encouraged Selwyn to dream big. Selwyn was determined to leave through any means necessary. His athletic prowess provided him with his ticket out. Through a short but intense arena football career he was able to find financial solvency and fulfilled a childhood desire to purchase a home for his mother. Though life continued to be filled with challenges (Selwyn lost three close family members tragically, including both his parents) he went on to become a successful salesman, hotel owner and father with his dynamic wife Jodie. Then on May 25, 2020 Selwyn's life was forever changed. While watching the news, along with the rest of the world, he witnessed the unmerciful murder of his 46-year-old nephew, George Floyd. “It was the most horrific thing that I ever witnessed in my life.” As George Floyd's murder ignited the largest civil rights protest in US history, Selwyn Jones became an activist. Every day Selwyn commits to ending police brutality and systemic racism and bringing justice to his nephew's senseless and cruel murder. Known affectionately as Uncle Selwyn Jones he promised “I will not let his death be in vain. I do not want my sons or anyone else to go through what my nephew endured for that 8 minutes 46 seconds. I want to be a beacon of light for those who face racism or adversity in this life.” He continues his personal growth by positively enhancing the lives of others in his work as a community & civil rights leader. Rapper and journalist David Shanks (aka Traum Diggs) and professor/author Mickey Hess have joined forces to celebrate and discuss their love of Hip Hop music and culture in their podcast A Guest in the House. What takes this duo’s conversations to another level is their frank and honest examination of the broader issues of the ownership and appreciation of art, and what they can teach us about the social, cultural and racial complexities of our world. This far-ranging discussion delves into how our upbringing impacts our appreciation of art, how creativity changes throughout our lives and the differences between appropriation and appreciation of hip hop culture.

Steve Sachs spent his years after college playing in a band. Designing flyers, merch and album covers eventually led him to a job in marketing, but after a few years in the field, he needed a change.Prior to marketing, Steve worked with seniors living with memory impairment, and as a vocational trainer for young adults with special needs. He also volunteered at a soup kitchen, playing music with people experiencing homelessness. He learned firsthand that we cannot effectively help others until we truly understand them. Combining those lessons with his background in visual design led Steve to UX (user experience): "I see UX as a practice that lives at the intersection of empathy and creativity. An increased age rating and a warning have been placed on a new Netflix documentary showing brief clips of the Christchurch mosque terror attacks. The imagery comes from the mass murderer's own livestreaming of the killings. The documentary, The Social Media Dilemma, started screening in this country late last week with a seven years-plus rating. Complaints to the chief censor prompted him to contact Netflix on Saturday, but they refused to remove the clips. The streaming service did agree to raise the age-rating and add a warning saying it contained scenes from the shootings. Chief censor David Shanks described the offending scenes to RNZ's Conan Young.
David Shanks is the Chief Censor for New Zealand. As his title implies he is responsible for determining what is and what is not fit for public consumption, what ratings should be applied to various media, as well as other less obvious details that highlight the elusive line between protected speech and speech that constitutes a danger to public safety. We first reached out to David’s office after the BBC highlighted a series of videos from the government of New Zealand encouraging parents to discuss online porn consumption and cyber bullying with their kids. One of the defining moments of David’s tenure as censor came when a terrorist live streamed the mass murder of 51 people during Friday prayers at a mosque and an Islamic center in Christchurch on March 15, 2019.

Ropeadope is a collaborative community, a brand, a moving force with a life of its own that is larger than life. Founded at the close of the last century, Ropeadope has taken the path less traveled, always following the music where it wants to go. From historically significant records with celebrity names to completely unknown artists, Ropeadope has crossed boundaries and defied music business logic to create a truly unique company that continues to release great music. Ropeadope is a story of inclusion. We view the world as a place of one, where music is a unifying force connecting all of us. We accept that musicians know their art better than businessmen do. We know that this concept, this thing called Ropeadope, is larger than any of us. And so we follow wherever Ropeadope may lead. -------------------For more information on Ropeadope, visit:Ropeadope.comfacebook: @ropeadope99IG: @ropeadopeTW: @ropeadopeRopeadope on BandcampYouTube: 21Soul-------------------Music courtesy of Ropeadope:"I Can't Breathe" (feat. While Mickey and Dave address the notable deaths that happened in the weeks and days just prior to recording this episode, the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police had not yet occurred at the time of recording. The segment added at the opening of this podcast was recorded in early June to acknowledge Mr. Floyd's death and the demonstrations of protest that resulted both across the United States and around the world. We at A Guest in the House stand in solidarity with all who work and fight for equality, justice and an end to systemic racism and marginalization.-------------------Music courtesy of Traum Diggs:"Swan (feat. The world is in unprecedented times with the pandemic still looming and massive protests and reaction to the police killing of George Floyd. Dave and Mickey first check-in on each other's mental health and wellbeing and then discuss the magnitude of the moment and steps to heal and reform our country.
Mickey asks Dave to look back at what got him into rap as a kid growing up in East Flatbush, Brooklyn in the 80s and 90s. Dave begins with the early influences like his brother, "J Fresh", and Run DMC, then recounts the stories of his learning, growth and ultimately contributions to the art form. He and Mickey then flow into a discussion of how changes in social and cultural norms have affected the language and expression of hip-hop over the years.
Learn more about J'na Jefferson.
The conversation on hip-hop as property continues, and David and Mickey also take some time to discuss their current listening preferences and favorite artists of the moment.
A "controversial" remark from rapper Jay Electronica on his latest release sparks a conversation between the fellas on what is considered offensive in hip-hop and who has the authority to make those determinations.
Mickey digs deep into his past as Dave asks him to describe what drew him to hip-hop music in the 80s and 90s as a young white kid in rural Kentucky.
Mickey and Dave discuss the rapper and poet Noname's proclamation that she will no longer perform for a predominantly White crowd because “I don't want to dance on a stage for white people” who are more dedicated to enjoying Black art than they are to standing up for Black people. Plus, Lil Wayne's assertion that the number of White kids at his concerts serves as evidence that “there is no such thing as racism,” and the legacy of the minstrel show.
In this episode, David and Mickey discuss the origins of Black History Month and the successes and failures of its implementation in schools.
We rank our favorite Wu-Tang Clan albums and singles and discuss the influence of Popa Wu, the Wu-Tang Clan's spiritual mentor, in the wake of his recent passing.
Our hosts discuss what brought them to team up to do this podcast and look for the sweet spot in discussing the music itself and the issues it raises. This episode takes on best-of lists as Dave and Mickey consider their favorite hip-hop albums and the “kwai-terria” (criteria) that puts them on the list.
In this first episode hosts David Shanks and Dr. Mickey Hess discuss how they met, the history of college classes on hip-hop, the dearth of Black professors at U.S. universities, Lord Jamar's description of White rappers as “guests in the house of hip-hop,” and the responsibilities of White people (from White rappers to fans to professors) who participate in the Black culture of hip-hop.

Banning the gunman's so-called manifesto was a controversial call by the Chief Censor last week. It has divided opinion among the media over whether they should delve into it - and just how much of it the public needs to know.
