What is the most recognisable symbol in jewellery history? The heart. In this Valentine's special episode of Gem Pursuit, Matthew Weldon and Fenia Sigkoudi explore the enduring story of the heart motif — a symbol that has carried secret messages, sealed romantic promises, and expressed devotion for centuries. We begin in the ancient world, where the heart was believed to be the centre of the soul, and trace how medieval courtly love helped shape the heart into a romantic emblem. From early love tokens and poetic brooches to protective witch hearts and crowned double hearts, the symbol evolved into a powerful visual language of love, loyalty, and longing. The episode also explores the Victorian era's obsession with sentimental heart jewellery, from Queen Victoria's personal charm bracelets to mourning lockets containing hair and portraits. Moving into the 20th century, we look at wartime sweetheart lockets and Elsa Peretti's revolutionary Open Heart design, which transformed the motif into a modern design icon. Finally, we turn to some of history's most spectacular heart-shaped jewels, including Elizabeth Taylor's Taj Mahal diamond, the legendary Blue Heart Diamond, and the technically astonishing Graff Venus — alongside iconic heart jewels worn by figures from Wallis Simpson to Lady Gaga. From intimate love tokens to world-famous gemstones, the heart has remained jewellery's most timeless symbol — and it's not going anywhere any time soon. www.courtville.ie Get social with Courtville, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok This podcast was produced for Courtville by Tape Deck

The Bible is a masterclass in storytelling. Even though it was written over many centuries and through the pens of many different authors, it is a singular story with several fascinating themes weaved throughout. In the Motif series, we look at some of these themes play out, and how they point to the person and work of Jesus. This week we explore the theme of 'Temple.'

We spotlight the newly refreshed Peranakan Museum and its special exhibition Peacock Power: Beauty and Symbolism Across Cultures. Saturday Mornings Show” host Glenn van Zutphen and co-host Neil Humphreys welcome Noorashikin Zulkifli, Deputy Director and Principal Curator for Islamic & Peranakan collections at ACM, and Diane Chee, lead curator of the exhibition. After nearly four years of renovation, the Peranakan Museum reopens with brand-new permanent galleries exploring Peranakan identity through “Origins,” “Home,” and “Style.” Noora shares how the museum now integrates contemporary art, fashion, and design alongside historical treasures, offering visitors a richer, more dynamic view of Peranakan culture. Diane introduces Peacock Power, which traces the bird’s enduring symbolism of beauty, power, and divinity across Asia. Featuring over 100 works from the National Collection and private lenders—including textiles, ceramics, and ritual objects—the exhibition highlights how the peacock motif travelled across cultures, becoming a shared artistic language. Interactive experiences, holograms, and curator-led tours further enrich the visitor journey.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Something had happened and the farm knew it.Rooster Cogburn was a burly, jewel-toned arrogance of teals, reds, deeper reds, and blues shot through with lances of yellow and purple.Fascinated with every big and little thing, Jamie Cheshire has long been an avid student of design and structure. Having worked together with giants, he has had the extreme good fortune to practice his craft for most of the last four decades and has seen his work appear nationally and in several countries on three continents. He lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with his beloved feral, hippie-chick wife, their three dogs and two cats. Deeply committed to the ordinary, he is constantly searching for a way to describe it.
