Send us a Text Message.Scotty Austin isn't your ordinary or average run-of-the-mill rock star. With a remarkable track record playing across the United States, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist in numerous genres, it is clear he has a unique perspective when it comes to creating music. Hailing from Parsons, Tennessee, his interest in various instruments started at a young age when he began reading music in kindergarten while also gaining experience in the family band at church. By the late 90s, Scotty began expanding on his knowledge of music genres and branching out to multiple styles such as percussion and classical guitar performance before earning his spot as the band leader of the official NASCAR Rolling Thunder band for an entire season. His accomplishments continued when around the early 2000s, he won fourth place in the world during the International Blues Contest while representing Memphis, Tennessee.         Shortly after, Scotty collaborated with a new original group and recording artist, Ash Bowers, along with Jason Aldean's label, Broken Bow Records, as well as the sister label, Stoney Creek Records. It wasn't long until Scotty decided to start his own original project, an indie rock band called Trash the Brand. He had wanted to record and play songs that he had written but never had the chance to play. Within weeks of forming, he was playing to packed houses and venues which in turn caught the attention of a few people in the music industry. Soon Scotty found himself in contact with Jeff Hanson (manager of Creed and Saving Abel), who offered to manage him. While negotiating, he asked Hanson to put him on the show with Saving Abel that was happening that weekend in Memphis. He was given the opening spot for the concert. Ian Moore may have been born in Berkeley, California, but the sound from his eponymously named debut studio album reflects Austin, Texas, the place he called home.  Moore began playing violin at a young age, but switched to guitar as a teen under the influence of artists like Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Moore's influence runs well beyond the blues genre, however, from Curtis Mayfield to Stevie Wonder, and from Sly & the Family Stone to the Rolling Stones.  Moore's debut album is based in the blues and roots rock.  Comparisons to Stevie Ray Vaughan, another Austin guitarist, come naturally with Moore's songwriting lyrics and his obvious guitar skills.  The album's success was a testament to Moore's ability to bridge the gap between traditional blues roots and contemporary rock sounds.While Ian Moore got his start in blues rock, he has been hard to pigeonhole into a single genre.  The record company wanted Moore to be a continuation of Stevie Ray Vaughan's legacy, but Moore had other ideas.  After his third album submission reflected a more power pop and roots rock sensibility, Capricorn Records dropped him.  Moore would continue a career as a touring musician and singer-songwriter, giving up greater fame for greater freedom as an artist to pursue his own path.    Rob brings us this lesser known blues album for this week's podcastNothingThe bluesy southern rock opening track to the album is a call back to a far-away love, perhaps reflecting life on the road.  “Miles and miles from nowhere but it's always someplace new.  My time is spent with strangers but my mind is spent with you.”RevelationThis funky song reminds us of the Black Crowes. It chronicles the discovery that the singer's girl is lying to him, and the revelation of her true character.  Unlike other lovers, the singer is going to break free of her trap.HarlemInspired by the energy of Harlem, Moore's lyrics explores the ways we are separated from each other by neighborhoods and experiences, even through physical barriers when you're “riding through Harlem in my bulletproof car.”How Does It FeelThis song tells a story about a girl who continues to break up with a guy only to come back over and over.  It was one of the songs that received airplay at the time the album had been released, along with “Nothing.”  It starts slowly and builds to the chorus. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Wayne's World 2”“Party on, Wayne!”  “Party on, Garth!” This second outing from Mike Myers and Dana Carvey dropped in December 1993. STAFF PICKS:Good by Better Than Ezra  Wayne kicks off the staff picks with a hit from the indie band Better Than Ezra.  The band came out of Baton Rouge where they attended LSU.  The song is about the positive things that come from the end of a relationship.  While there is always drama and hurt feelings, there are also good things on which to reflect when the dust settles.She Hates Me by Puddle of MuddLynch was able to find a clean version of this song for the podcast.  Wes Scantlin wrote this song along with Jimmy Allen, the original guitarist.  By the time the demo tape was heard and a decision was made to sign the band, the original group had broken up.  Scantlin was set up with new bandmates when signed to Flawless Records, and people didn't hate the song or the band.Purple Haze by The Cure Bruce brings us a cover of a famous piece by Jimi Hendrix.  A tribute album called “Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix” was released in 1993, and The Cure provided this take on Purple Haze.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.Like the Weather by 10,000 Maniacs Rob closes out the staff picks with an acoustic rendition of this song recorded for “MTV Unplugged.”  The song originally came out in 1987 on their third album.  Natalie Merchant would leave the group for a solo career shortly after this live performance. NOVELTY TRACK:(I Know I Got) Skillz by Shaquille O'Neal featuring Def JefCelebrity rap songs were in vogue at the time, but we think Shaq's skills were better exhibited on the basketball court. Always a blast to talk with my friends, Brad Stewart and Bobby Amaru from Saliva. If you're in the SE Michigan area, swing by District 142 on Monday, September 25th to see the show.  Their new record dropped a couple weeks back called Revelations. It was an album written and recorded before the passing of original guitarist, Wayne Swinny. Bobby said they put the album out to honor Wayne. They even redid some of the artwork to pay tribute to the late ax slinger. They talked about the backdrop they're playing in front of each night. "Everybody knows, when you see it, that Raiders logo." Their was a lot of Wayne talk. That dude was so nice. "No ego, one of a kind" is how Brad described him. As Booby recalled "He was always honest, a great person."  Bobby said he hasn't watched their latest video for "Come Back Stronger" that they recorded just days before Wayne's death. We talked a lot about the writing and recording process for the album.  We always talked about the split in the band with Saliva, and original singers Josey Scott's Saliva. "It's an interesting situation that we're to be quit honest." "It's an awesome thing!" Bobby added about Josey also being out on tour singing these songs. They went on to talk more on this topic.  There was the usual talk of football. These guys love their NFL.  If you follow Bobby on Instagram with his daughter. Steve and Remfry take a trip down memory lane this week and review an album that one of our hosts has already reviewed at the time of its release in the form of post-grunge no marks Puddle of Mudd's covers album, the confusingly titled, Re:(disc)overed, released on the 29th of August 2011. It's an album that could very much have flown under the radar for many people, what with Puddle of Mudd having suffered a serious drop in fortunes and commercial appeal after the mainstream dalliance they had with their 2001 album Come Clean. That record sold over 5 million copies worldwide, but a decade later the band were on something of a downward trajectory, so what better way to pump life into their career than to record a set of their versions of some of the most famous songs in the history of popular music. A good idea on paper, but quite how a band as rudimentary and lacking in quality as Puddle of Mudd thought that they were going to be capable of doing justice to classic songs by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Elton John's ROCKET MAN is a confusing one. Still, they did it, and back on an early incarnation of the Metal Hammer podcast, Steve was given the record to review on a particularly stressful week, resulting in the album, the band, their fans and, more than anyone, frontman Wes Scantlin getting a verbal kicking of the highest order. Ten years on and it's fair to say that Scantlin hasn't had the best of decades, being arrested for everything from tax evasion, to drink driving, to riding airport luggage carousels to strapping bombs to his own cars, he even ruined About A Girl by Nirvana. The silly bastard. But, we have to ask, did he really deserve to be thrown at a wall as a baby…? 

This one's a doozy: all the insanity of Crazy Town but with all of the hatable energy of Sonny Sandoval from P.O.D., and in ways worse. This is the murky and messy story of Puddle of Mudd — AND the examination of their second biggest hit, but arguably greatest song, "She Hates Me". Cracks.
