The Philosopher & The News
Are progressives to blame for Trump's attack on universities? - Sasha Mudd

The Philosopher & The News

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2025 41:42

On June 4, Donald Trump issued a 6 month ban on foreign students entering the US who seek to study at Harvard University, citing national security concerns. That ban came after a court had already blocked the decision of the Department of Homeland Security to stop issuing visas to foreign students who were admitted at Harvard University. Harvard is not the only university under attack by the Trump administration – many have had their federal funding axed or bullied into submission, like Columbia University. This attack on universities seems in line with common authoritarian tactics that seek to undermine a country's institutions of knowledge production, or at the very least submit them to the political will of those in power. But are universities also partly responsible for ending up in this situation? Richard Rorty was already warning in the 1990s of the resentment that some voters would soon feel towards “post-modernist professors” and college graduates who were “dictating manners” to the rest of society. Did universities allow political ideology to contaminate their project of open inquiry in the pursuit of knowledge and truth? Did academia become too focussed on which canonical figures had to be “cancelled”?  And are university professors too removed from the rest of society to be able to understand and engage with the ideas that go beyond their ideological comfort zone?Sasha Mudd is a philosopher, writer, and columnist who examines the moral dilemmas at the core of today's most pressing social challenges. Drawing on 18th- and 19th-century thought, she brings fresh perspectives to issues such as AI, climate change, immigration, and the erosion of democratic norms. She is an Associate Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, a visiting professor at the University of Southampton, and the Philosopher-at-Large for Prospect Magazine, where she writes a monthly column. If you enjoyed the episode, please leave us a rating and a review on Apple Podcasts. This podcast is created in partnership with The Philosopher, the UK's longest running public philosophy journalm founded in 1923. Brian Mudd fills in for Clay and Buck, he opens with sharp commentary on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ extended “magic minute” speech, a procedural move delaying the final vote on the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act." Mudd humorously critiques Jeffries’ filibuster-style tactics, drawing comparisons to Cory Booker’s past Senate performance and highlighting the strategic implications for House Republicans. The show dives deep into the legislative showdown in Congress, emphasizing the GOP’s push to pass President Trump’s signature bill before July 4th. Mudd explores the political theater surrounding the vote, including reactions from figures like AOC and Chuck Schumer, and the broader implications for Trump’s second-term agenda. The hour transitions into foreign policy, where Mudd and guest Jon Decker, iHeartRadio’s White House correspondent, analyze Trump’s recent NATO summit success, the crippling of Iran’s nuclear program, and new trade deals with the UK and Vietnam. Decker praises Trump’s strategic use of executive power and legislative influence, noting his rapid pace of executive orders and legislative wins compared to his first term. The segment closes with legal analysis of the Diddy trial verdict, where Decker discusses the implications of the not-guilty ruling on major charges, the high bond amount, and the possibility of a presidential pardon. Mudd speaks with Congressman Jimmy Patronis from Florida, who expresses frustration over House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' record-breaking "magic minute" speech that has delayed the vote. Patronis describes the speech as "a colossal waste of time" and "ridiculous," noting that Jeffries appears to be attempting to break Kevin McCarthy's record for the longest continuous floor speech. The conversation shifts to the fiscal conservative perspective on the bill, with Mudd questioning Patronis about concerns regarding federal debt and deficit implications. Despite some controversial elements like allowing certain illegal immigrants access to Medicaid, Patronis indicates he will vote in favor of the legislation. Brian Mudd gives listeners a detailed breakdown of how the BBB legislation will financially impact average American families and taxpayers, emphasizing that "the round trip impact of this bill is so much more than the average person begins to understand." Whether you have been to or plan on visiting Manzanita, the story of how the iconic Manzanita Mudd Dogs started to how Michael and his brother Brad took over the operation of the business from their parents, Jim and Lynn Mudd, is an awesome story.   Michael talks about how and why his parents started serving hot dogs from their driveway in Manzanita, and how that led to the Mudd Nick Foundation, which provides kids with wonderful enriching opportunities to go to camps and travel worldwide through their charitable efforts.  It was truly a team effort to find that purpose, and now the foundation and hot dog business is going strong, evolving and thriving.   Hearing Michael's recollection of leaving the corporate world to make authentic Chicago Dogs is something so many of us would envy, and we'll get to hear how that's worked out for Michael.   Manzanita Mudd Dogs serves more Chicago dogs than any other place on the West Coast.  They can be found close to the water on Laneda Avenue in Manzanita, or here: https://www.manzanitamudddogs.com/.  The Mudd Nick Foundation can be found here: https://muddnickfoundation.com/   Right at the Fork is supported by:  Zupan's Markets: www.Zupans.com  RingSide Steakhouse:  www.RingSideSteakhouse.com  Portland Food Adventures: www.PortlandFoodAdventures.com

Move Along Home (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9), S1 E10) was recommended by nazzy (she/her), who said: I cannot believe nobody has asked for this one yet!One of the earliest criticisms of DS9 was that it didn't "boldly go", and in its first two seasons in particular, there were a lot of episodes whose basic synopses read "Weird alien(s) come to the station, hijinks occur." And being a DS9 fan as always meant knowing that criticism is always just around the corner, which meant that for episodes like "Move Along Home", the standard response was an embarrassed shrug and a 'yeah...it hadn't found its feet yet. It got better!'And "Move Along Home" is the ur-example of this type of story. Weird aliens come to DS9, and introduce Quark to a strange board game of chance that traps members of the senior staff in a bizarre game world??? And that's the episode?!But then I read a review of "Move Along Home" that reframed the episode for me in a very meaningful way. "Move Along Home", it said, is basically a TOS episode. And that made so much sense! Is Commander Sisko having to play hopscotch and sing a children's song that different from the crew of the TOS Enterprise being forced to fight in "Plato's Stepchildren"? Or acting strangely to break the brains of the androids in "I, Mudd"? Suddenly, it made perfect sense, and "Move Along Home" is no longer embarrassing.Move Along Home first aired on March 14, 1993, written by story by Michael Piller, teleplay by Frederick Rappaport, Lisa Rich and Jeanne Carrigan-Fauci, and directed by David CarsonQuark plays a board game with the Wadi, a newly encountered species from the Gamma Quadrant, and the lives of the crew seemingly depend on the outcome. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook
