Tide pools may look like simple puddles along the shoreline, but they are tiny ocean ecosystems filled with fish, crabs, snails, sea stars, worms, algae, and other hidden marine life. In this episode of How to Protect the Ocean, Andrew Lewin explains why tide pools are one of the best ways to experience the ocean without a boat, scuba gear, or expensive equipment. These small pools reveal how much life exists right at our feet, and why slowing down is often the best way to discover it. You will learn how tide pools support biodiversity, why they help coastal species survive between tides, and how they can inspire curiosity in kids, families, and anyone who wants to reconnect with the ocean. “Being a father is probably one of the toughest and most rewarding jobs I've ever had. A lot of the principles I used to teach snipers apply to kids: dealing with negativity, replacing negative self-talk, learning that well-meaning adults can say terrible things — and you don't have to take that on as baggage.” — Brandon Webb Brandon Webb defines himself as an author, entrepreneur, Navy SEAL sniper, and father. But not in that order. The first three he leveraged into a series of bestselling books about the art of sniping. The fourth — the art of being a loving father — he dodged and ducked for years. But fatherhood might be Webb's real calling. People regularly pulled him aside after meeting his grown children to ask him about his “secret” for being an effective dad. His kids were making eye contact, they were asking good questions rather than staring at their phones. Most astonishingly, they seemed happy. Webb's new book, Puddle Jumpers: Simple and Proven Ways to Raise Confident and Joyful Kids, reveals his secret of parenting. It applies the positive performance psychology Webb learned as a Navy SEAL sniper instructor — how to redirect negative self-talk, how to deal with well-meaning adults who say damaging things, how to build mental toughness without destroying connection — to the work of raising children. It outlines his parenting philosophy of both high expectations and high support. Think of Puddle Jumpers as simultaneously the manual for tiger and the bunny parenting. Brandon Webb's ultimate calling in life is as a parent. Father, author, entrepreneur and Navy SEAL sniper. In that order. Five Takeaways • The Sniper Instructor as Parenting Coach: Webb was running the Navy SEAL sniper program at 27 years old. The psychology they taught there — positive self-talk, replacing negative internal narratives, dealing with adversity without being broken by it — is what he applied to parenting. The connection is not as strange as it sounds: both sniping and parenting require performing under pressure, dealing with failure without catastrophising, and building confidence that is genuine rather than brittle. The difference is that the stakes in parenting last a lifetime. • High Expectations, High Support: Webb's alternative to the false choice between permissive parenting and authoritarian discipline. Permissive parenting replaces preparation with protection. Authoritarian discipline breaks connection. Puddle Jumper Parenting holds both simultaneously: clear expectations and emotional safety. Kids need to know what's required of them. They also need to know they won't be abandoned when they fail. Webb's word for children raised this way: puddle jumpers — kids who leap into life's messy moments with full-hearted abandon, not because they're fearless but because they trust themselves to recover. • The Credit Card Lesson: Don't Bail Them Out: Webb's son Jackson managed a self-storage facility through college and ended up with a $25,000 ownership payout as a sophomore at St Andrews. He spent it like a drunken sailor on shore leave, got a credit card, ran up $12,000 in debt at predatory interest rates, and called his father for help. Webb's response: you remember that conversation we had? Figure it out. He let his son suffer. Jackson's girlfriend hated Webb for two years. At the end, Jackson paid off the debt with a new business and told his father it was one of the best lessons he'd ever been taught. It would have been easy to bail him out. The suffering was the lesson. • Purpose and the War Veteran: Viktor Frankl's Lesson: How does a combat veteran come home intact? Webb's answer: purpose. His Afghanistan deployment had clear moral logic — the propaganda posters in the caves, the training camps, the towers. That clarity carried him through. Iraq was different. Soldiers who went to Iraq with no understanding of why they were there — and whose friends in 2010 were saying we have no idea what we're doing here — came home broken. Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning: purpose is the thing that makes endurance possible. Without it, violence that cannot be assigned rational meaning produces serious mental illness. • Teach Kids About Money: The American Economy Preys on Them: Webb has strong opinions: America's economy is largely fuelled by consumer debt. Credit card companies prey on college students because they know the parents will bail them out. Kids need to understand the system before the system takes advantage of them. His prescription: teach them age-appropriate financial literacy early. The Acorns Early app gamifies financial learning for children. The deal he struck with all his kids in college: I pay for school, you have a roof and food, but if you want to socialise, get a job. The lesson is not just about money. It's about agency. The marks your blade leaves in the water after every stroke are one of the most honest pieces of coaching feedback you'll ever get — and most rowers row straight past them. Today you'll learn what a good puddle actually looks like and why size has nothing to do with it, what your puddles are telling you when they go wrong, and a practice tool that removes puddles entirely — and why that can be exactly what you need. Every stroke leaves a mark. Today we learn to read them. Timestamps 01:00 The anatomy of a good puddle This is your stroke made visible - what you actually did on that stroke. You should be aiming to make tight, swirly, deep — and no splash puddles. It's concentrated and without foamy white water around it. The depth and darkness of the water swirl indicates the power applied. The puddle is caused by the curve at the front of the blade - as you lever the boat past the point the oar went into the water. The mound test - you want water to move effectively. Water flows and you cannot compress water with a rowing oar. This is why you can create a mound in front of the face of the spoon. Look at the end of your stroke to see your mound. The water should be pushed up in front of the spoon with a corresponding hollow behind the blade spoon. Sustaining both through to the finish enables you to take the oar out of the water with very little effort. If your acceleration drops in the second half of the power phase, the mound lowers, the hollow fills up and it becomes harder to take the oar out of the water. Anyone can make a big splashy puddle by washing out - pull the handle down into your lap at the finish and you'll see the puddle changes. 04:50 Puddle Killers What goes wrong and why? Energy wasted on the extraction causes splash - feathering out, lack of a clean exit - these may be an indication of unnecessary energy being used to take the oar out of the water. The language you use can be problematic e.g. "pulling". Using your arms can mean you rip the oar against the water. Water moves as a single block at a gradient of 1:200 - rowing needs to keep the water block solid. Breaking the water block causes little air bubbles to get into the water and this makes it harder for the oar to grip the water and it becomes less effective. Use language such as burying the blade, pushing it horizontally and extracting smoothly. The boat moves forward because the water goes back relative to the boat. 07:30 Puddle-less rowing Sometimes no puddle is the whole point. Try to row without making a puddle - this helps you to focus on your technique and if you are keeping the oar at the correct depth through the stroke and taking it out cleanly. Try rowing with the oar only half under the water. This helps you to learn how to manage the handle which controls the oar height through the stroke. Align the catch and finish heights by controlling the handle. What your puddles are telling you - take a look behind you from catch to finish and watch the puddle move away from the boat using peripheral vision or by turning your head to see the full stroke.

“Free” takes on a deeply personal meaning for frontman Wes Scantlin. The song reflects his own struggles that he has contended with over the years. Essentially, “Free” is about severing ties with bad influences, whether it's people or vices, and surrounding yourself with the good. Scantlin says, “Everybody goes through life with ups and downs, and you can find your way. Along the way, people come around and they're not your people. Accept the people who are trying to help you.” When times get especially tough, Scantlin finds help in a higher power. Scantlin says, “Look up to God, ask Him for help, and He'll take you somewhere better. I hope people hear their own story in ‘Free' and take whatever they need from the song. Keep your head up, improve, and remain awesome. God will guide you in the right direction. Get free. Stay free. Stay kind and be nice to each other.” With a career spanning over two decades, Puddle of Mudd has cemented themselves as a prominent force in the world of rock music. Formed in 1991, multi-Platinum-selling rock band, Puddle of Mudd has sold over seven million albums worldwide and has had a string of chart-topping hits, including “Blurry,” "She Hates Me," “Psycho,” "Famous,” “Drift and Die,” and “Control.” For more information on Puddle of Mudd and upcoming tour dates, visit: https://www.puddleofmudd.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Parker visits the angel tree in Charleston and shenanigans ensue. Then, we are pondering the future, and dotting each other. Parker challenges Fred to tell a story, and you won't believe, or want to hear it. Fred's got a movie recommendation, and it's based on real life events. We try to guess the movie, and fail as expected, and we decide to end the show with a new mind-bending experiment where we try to read Allan's mind, and farts. #blcpodcast #podcastingforthepeople #funny #podcast #greenvillesc #scpodcast #yeahthatgreenville Listen at: https://americasfavoritepodcast.com Tweet the Show: https://twitter.com/blcworld Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/blcpodcast/ Check us out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blcpodcast/ Buy Fred and Allan Beer: https://www.patreon.com/blcworld

The Mousedebaters talk Disney Character Icebreakers This week, we find out how well we actually know Disney characters — spoiler: maybe not well, but also too well, somehow. Armed with a list of typical ice breaker questions and randomly generated Disney characters, we spiral quickly into the kind of bizarro conversations that you've come to love us for. Along the way we tackle life's great mysteries, like: What does Launchpad hate most about his job? What does Scuttle spend his money on? (You're not ready.)What is Clopin's New Year's resolution? What does Baymax do for fun?But we ALSO uncover What is a half-human, half-deer?Hans Zimmer vs. Phil Collins: who would YOU save? And seriously… who names their kid Todd?Listen, we know these were supposed to be easy questions. We just made them weird. We accept who we are — and you apparently do too. Tune in as we assign wildly unnecessary backstories to characters who did nothing to deserve this.Episode 39 is live — Bring your favorite Todd.

"I don't think people think of us when they think of emo. Probably we covered 'Mamma Mia' by ABBA today. That was emo. Yeah."Join the "Meeting of the Brians" as we sit down with Brian Logan Dales of The Summer Set right after their set at the When We Were Young festival. Despite playing an acoustic show in Tucson and driving through the night to make it, Dales brings his trademark high energy. We discuss the band's sometimes-contested place in emo history, with Brian admitting they see themselves as an attitude-driven pop-rock band with "one foot in, one foot out." He gives a look behind the scenes of their latest album, Meet Me In The Record Store, a passion project five years in the making that they treated like their "first album all over again". This latest work reflects what The Summer Set sounds like as an adult band, writing about everything from girls to existential crises. Dales talks about the process of letting the songs "fine wine" as demos for years , and how they balanced the setlist at the nostalgia festival between fan-favorite older songs and the new material. Find out which song Dales played on an overnight drive, and hear about the time he mistakenly played a Puddle of Mudd cover at Emo Nitet.
