The TMI guys ring in the holidays — and Jordan's birthday! – by going deep into 10 of their favorite (or, in some cases, least favorite) Christmas songs. You'll learn how that mind-melting David Bowie-Bing Crosby duet came to be (as well as the morbid events that followed) as well as the hilariously drunken shenanigans that unfolded on the set of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" video — plus the saga of George Michael's hair. Heigl shares his passion for jazz through the Vince Guaraldi 'Charlie Brown Christmas' soundtrack, in addition to the hilariously fast genesis of "Feliz Navidad" and the precocious brilliance of Brenda Lee and her deathless "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." And whatever you do, don't miss out on Jordan and Alex's battle over whether or not Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" actually sucks. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good fight! Send us a text**Below is AI generated**Ever found yourself secretly despising a beloved Christmas classic or questioning the charm of a holiday favorite as you share it with the next generation? Join us as we navigate the highs and lows of 2024, starting with a comedic dissection of Christmas music and films. We take a cheeky swipe at Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time," while debating the timelessness of "Christmas in New York" and "Carol of the Bells." Our scrutiny doesn't stop there; "Love Actually" gets a modern reevaluation, showing the inevitable cracks that appear when viewed through today's lens. Meanwhile, "Home Alone" brings a nostalgic warmth, offering a chance to bond over slapstick humor with our kids.As we wrap up, we shine a spotlight on some of the year's most compelling reads and cultural gems. "The Sunbird" by Sarah Haddad emerges as a must-read, a novel so exquisitely written that every word resonates deeply. It's a self-published triumph that's capturing hearts and getting the recognition it deserves. This episode balances the light-hearted and the thoughtful, providing both a trip down memory lane and a glimpse into the year's standout stories. Season's Greetings! After this episode of the Video Store Podcast some of you may be wondering about my sanity. (I know my mother does.) Listen, I love Christmas films — I really do! I grew up on all those Rankin-Bass specials and classic Christmas movies… but after watching a dozen Hallmark specials in a row, don't you wish that at least once a fight would break out and someone would carve more than the turkey? No? Oh, dear. Maybe my mother was right. On this episode I share four horror-themed Christmas classics. First up is 1974's Black Christmas, a film that, along with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (also released in 1974). In the film a sorority house is bombarded with obscene phone calls that quickly turn violent. What the sorority sisters don't realize is that the calls are coming from inside the house. The killer is hiding in the attic, as are some of his victims. This might not have been the best film to lead off with because it is a straight up horror film. It is considered to be one of the first slasher films, and the first “holiday” slasher film. It's easy to see how later films like Halloween and Friday the 13th were influenced by it. While the film does take place over the holiday break, don't hold out for a Christmas miracle when it comes to the ending.Next up is 1984's Silent Night, Deadly Night. You know how they say sometimes a film's reputation precedes it? The release of this film was highly protested, not so much because of its content but because of the film's artwork which featured an arm (dressed in a Santa suit) reaching out of a chimney and holding an ax. The film was so highly contested that Gene Siskel once read the names of the producers of the film and shamed them on television. Despite only running in theaters for a single week, it managed to bring in $2.5 million and did even better in rental stores. It was so successful that we eventually got four sequels to the film. Silent Night, Deadly Night is definitely a horror film but with a few light moments thrown in.My third film this week is 1997's Jack Frost, not to be consued with the 1998 film by the same name starring Michael Keaton. In this holiday treat, a transport vehicle carring a convicted serial killer combines with a van full of genetic testing chemicals (that's never good) and as a result the killer, named Jack Frost, finds himself melted and merged with the layer of snow he landed on. Essentially the plot of this film is the same as Child's Play, instead of the killer ending up in a doll, here he becomes a snowman. This is more of a black comedy than a straight up horror film and according to Rotten Tomatoes it wasn't a very good one, but those people need to drink more spiked eggnog before watching classics like this. The last film on my list is 1984's Gremlins. If you haven't seen it in a while you might have forgotten that Gremlins takes place around Christmas. (Billy's Mogwai was a Christmas gift, remember?) With names like Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, Chris Columbus, Phoebe Cates, Keye Luke, Howie Mandell, and even Corey Feldman, this film was destined to be a classic. This is a film that I often catch scenes of while flipping channels, but really should be watched from beginning to end to fully enjoy. This year I noticed Home Depot had their Christmas holiday decorations out on display in late October. I heard “Wonderful Christmastime” dozens of times on the radio before Thanksgiving. It seems like we get bombarded with Christmas films, television episodes, TV specials and music for two solid months each year. I like Christmas, I really do, but every now and then a film featuring a guy in a Santa outfit wielding an ax is a nice break from it all. Enjoy and seasons greetings from me and the other employees here at the video store. This is a public episode. Multi-platinum recording artist Clay Aiken is back with a stunning new version of the Bing Crosby classic "Do You Hear What I Hear?," the first single from his highly anticipated Christmas album Christmas Bells are Ringing, set to be released on November 22nd. Aiken's unique interpretation infuses the classic carol with his signature vocal warmth and emotional depth making it a song for our times. Written in 1962 by Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis, "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is timeless in its message, yet even more resonant today. Aiken reflects, "The whole American political climate over the past few years hasn't really given us much in the way of hope or optimism. As much as I wanted to believe I might be able to make some positive change in that world, I've realized that music often does a better job of that." Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Ron Fair, "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is the first release from Aiken's first studio album in over a decade, following a hiatus from music which found Aiken running for Congressional office in North Carolina, and raising his now teenage son. The album, Christmas Bells are Ringing, marks a return to the holiday music that solidified Aiken's place as a household name in 2004, when his debut holiday album Merry Christmas With Love broke records, selling nearly 300,000 copies in its first week. That album went platinum, becoming the best-selling holiday album of 2004 and earning Aiken three Billboard Music Awards. The new record boasts fresh takes on holiday staples like Nat King Cole's "Caroling, Caroling" and Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime", as well as a lush reinvention of "Merry Christmas, Darling" by the Carpenters (one of Clay's musical inspirations) and a show-stopping rendition of "Pure Imagination" which reimagines the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory classic as a fitting soundtrack for the holiday season.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Aiken has since sold millions of albums, launched national tours, starred on Broadway, and made his mark as a philanthropist and politician.Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Merry Christmas With Love, Clay Aiken's new album, Christmas Bells are Ringing' promises to bring the same joy and spirit to listeners, making it the perfect soundtrack for the 2024 holiday season.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

We're taking a break for the holiday season, so we pulled a fun and timely discussion from our back catalog. In this episode from December, 2018, we look at the two most famous—and most polarizing—holiday songs from the solo Beatles: Paul's "Wonderful Christmastime" and John's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)." Every year around the holidays, sometimes even before Thanksgiving these days, you start to hear them. The age old songs to ring in the season at the end of the year. I'm talking about Christmas songs - some of which are hundreds of years old and some have become popular in our lifetimes. In stores, in schools, in offices, in the air you'll be hearing songs in every language to celebrate. And rock n roll has it's own classics in the genre - a great many legends and once hot bands have done their best to come up with an original (or original re-working of) song that will get them on the radio between November and January every year. Some are true classics, sung by legends. Some are catchy tunes from your favorite acts. Do you prefer John Lennon's Happy Christmas (War is Over) or Paul McCartney's A Wonderful Christmas Time? Do you prefer classics from the early age of rock n roll from Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry or The Beach Boys? The Wolf and Action Jackson are children of the MTV generation and in the 80s artists collaborated for a cause through Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas and the A Very Special Christmas albums. Each of the boys will walk through 10 up to their very favorite rockin Christmas classic and might give each other a hard time for some of them. But isn't that what the holidays are all about (It's time, for the airing of the greivances!) If you've ever watched Mystery Science Theater 3000, you'll love Jeff and Jason's snarky take on some of the worst Christmas and holiday-themed music released. The series ran for about 10 years and almost extinguished the love Jeff had for Christmas music. But, Jason seemingly never tires of it. In the first segment, the guys talk about the genesis of Mellowmas, how it migrated from their blogs to Popdose, how it evolved, and why they decided to end the series. The series got so popular that they had two theme songs written for it. One was by Alan O'Day, whose big hit, "Undercover Angel" went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. The other theme song was written by fellow Popdose writer and all-around creative genius, Terje Fjelde. Ted also surprises Jeff and Jason with an AI-generated audiobook reading of a portion of Mellowmas post with Jeff as Santa Claus and Jason as Fin, a vaguely Irish-accented fella. Finally, what "Mellowmas" would be complete without a painfully extended version of "Wonderful Christmastime" and bleating sheep in the holiday classic, "Silent Night." Segment two is about unironically loving certain holiday songs. The guys each feature five of their favorites that they don't get tired of. And look here's a playlist of them!
Forget about all those uncool Xmas tunes you hear in the malls - we've got the good stuff for this Holiday season! The first present for you is "Mr. Scrooge" by England's GREATEST 60S girl group, The Orchids (2:16). If Georgina Oliver isn't in your 60s British Music Icons Advent Calendar - then one listen to this, and she will be! Great backing from Pamela Jarman & Valerie Jones. John Lennon gets coal in his stocking for puttin' 'em down on TV in '63. The next carol is by the legendary Sonics! They "Don't Believe In Christmas", maybe because John Lennon was The Grinch (32:13). A pinch from Chuck Berry, but who cares!! Man, Christmas sounds rough on the mean streets of Tacoma, Washington! Back to The Beatles - remember who's better than them? The Monkees, who do an ace version of Macca's "Wonderful Christmastime" (1:06:39). This one is sweet as a candy cane. Another legend comes down the chimney for Song 4 - Bob Dylan klezmers it up with his interdenominational "Must Be Santa" (1:53:59). Xmas is a great excuse to get drunk for a month - so enjoy it! Gather round the brazier and Ho Ho Ho!!!
On this month's episode of WCRI's Kids Hour, hosts Jamie and UCONN Nursing Students Taylor and Emily listen to holiday music classics like Last Christmas, I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas, music from The Grinch, Wonderful Christmastime, and many more!
According to Carmen, Dave was a bit of a "Grinch" yesterday when she asked if he could play a new Christmas song from Blessing Offor. So, this morning, we started the show off with an oldie but a goodie with Blessing displaying his God-given gift on "Wonderful Christmastime". If you've got a snorer in the family, you might want to check out Jules recommendation for a "sleep mitigation tool" as a possible Christmas present for you and your family member. Happy Monday, Christmas fanatics! We hope you all had a wonderful Easter and hope that the Easter Bunny was good to you all! This week, Julia, Anthony, and the effervescent Natalie Bickel (that's right, Thom is M.I.A. this week due to dad duties) travel to the north pole to visit the most famous reindeer of all and discuss his 1998, theatrically released film, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie"! Does the '90's animation style inject enough nostalgia into the three hosts to make up for the fact that this film has all but disappeared in recent years? How does it fare against the iconic 1964, Rankin/Bass special in their minds, and how does it differ in terms of story? And what exactly has that Busy Bee, Natalie Bickel, been up to since the last time she appeared on the show? All of these answers, and much more, are divulged in this week's episode! So, settle in and relax because "the mood is right, the spirit's up, we're here tonight, and that's enough" to inject this Mid-April Monday with some much needed Christmas cheer! Enjoy, y'all! As always, thanks for your love and support!

Book Vs. Movie: Last ChristmasThe George Michael Classic Song Vs. the 2019 Holiday FilmHappy Holidays! The Margos have covered so many Christmas-themed episodes in the past that we had to reach out and use a classic holiday song, Last Christmas, written and produced by the late great George Michael, and talk about the adorable 2019 film adaptation written by the revered Emma Thompson. The song is one of those “earworm” ditties that you either hate or love (similar to Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmas Time) that several major artists have sung since its debut in 1984. It's a holiday story about love and longing that anyone can relate to, and if you hate it, you might as well skip this episode! Before he passed away on Christmas day in 2016 (the irony!), Michael said he would only accept Thompson as the screenwriter if it were ever made into a film. The result is a delightful mixture of wonderful acting (Emilia Clark, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh,) direction by Paul Feig, a bevy of Michael's best tunes, and gobsmacking London locations that will melt the biggest Scrooge into a puddle of holiday happiness. Clarke plays Kate Andrich, a Yugoslavian immigrant who is having a rotten time in life. She works as an “Elf” at a year-round Christmas shop, has no place to live permanently, and is strained from her family. Eventually, she befriends Tom, a nice man who mysteriously shows up to help her learn to grow up, be more responsible, take care of her health (Kate had a heart transplant!), give back to her community working at a shelter, and finding out that her dream man is an angel who saved her life. SWOON!Most critics don't get it, but who cares? It's a sweet confection! Which did we like better, the song or the movie? Listen to find out!Kensington Books and the novel Colorado Country by Diana Palmer sponsor this episode!New York Times bestselling author Diana Palmer takes readers to Christmastime in Colorado with two of her celebrated novellas in one collection featuring solitary, silent cowboys who find their restless hearts tamed by women of uncommon grace and strength. Cattleman Dal Blake wishes Meadow's dog would quit digging under his fence—and that his pretty neighbor wasn't just as good at getting under his skin. . . Widowed schoolteacher Katy is starting over with her young daughter, and she knows the perfect place—her grandmother's Colorado ranch.
