In our last visit with author and publisher Teresa Funke, we heard about her life and pandemic imposed sabbatical and how she knew her path was changing, but she wasn't sure how. In this episode, we find that she's reached a new place with very few conclusions but a new appreciation for not knowing yet what's ahead and being OK with it. Many creatives are entering a time of questioning and reflection, like Teresa. In this conversation, we hear from Teresa on the themes of: ** Knowing when the sabbatical has ended. ** The deeper questions that accompany stopping. ** Releasing old ways of doing things. ** Getting excited before new possibilities appear. ** Encouragement for the low times. And a practical way Teresa and her husband have found to make great literature available and accessible to kids who may not otherwise be exposed to it. Today was the third day in a row I heard from someone how hard it has been to find customers, clients, or an audience. Most of the time, when I hear this complaint, I start by asking which people they've been spending the most time with. There are usually two responses - either they've not been spending time with people at all, or they've been spending time with others in their profession. Both situations tend toward the problematic. Isolation for solopreneurs, freelancers, and artistic creators is often built into the path. The career, by nature, tends to favor solitude and can be a kind of lonesome existence. Much of the difficulty with these folks is balancing the need for quiet, creative space and the ongoing need to cultivate customer relationships and generate business. But the group who spend most of their time with people in the same professional pond either have to adapt their services for peers and colleagues or find another pond. This is the situation that's been coming up this week. I think one of their difficulties is knowing what they do, but they aren't sure how to find the people who need it. In this situation, I usually ask a couple of questions. First - How clear are you on what you offer? Is your specialty something you can easily articulate for others to understand? If they are able to communicate their specialty and their offers, I have one other question. What's the larger purpose that your work or business serves? Maybe you've heard the stories of people doing menial labor who went about it vigorously because it was in service to a greater cause than their self-interest. The nurse aide was happy to be offering her service as a contribution to victory in the war. The mailroom clerk who understood he had a role in the smooth operation of the New York Stock Exchange. I've found that often, this understanding is the missing link between businesses and customers, services and clients, and artists and their audiences. When you identify the larger purpose you serve, you start to see people who want that nearly everywhere. Your Own Best Company with Franklin Taggart

Talking to my friend Teresa Funke today and was inspired by her fun idea for celebrating her birthday. Buy one lottery ticket for every year of her life and give those tickets to anyone she meets. Celebration is a central part of our life together as humans. It's a central aspect of living in community and we are unique as a species in that we look for reasons to celebrate - milestones, rites of passage, getting up in the morning - celebration is a human thing. As I've gotten older, celebration has become a much more important thing to remember. I haven't always been good at it, and it still feels awkward, but it matters. More in the Coffee Break about that. A great way to celebrate Teresa would be to buy her book, Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life here: https://www.teresafunke.com/product/bursts-of-brilliance/ #creativity #community #celebration

I've been called the king of the one-liners and my humor tends toward the sarcastic and dry side. I'm surprised I haven't been beaten up more. I've also been called hard to get to know and Mister Mystery. For someone who feels like a good communicator, I still end up making a bad first impression a lot more often than I'd like. This habit of trying to get people to laugh at my sarcastic wit is one I probably need to retire. The most recent story of why is in today's Coffee Break. For anyone who doesn't know me very well, I never intend to mean any harm to anyone. If we both can keep from jumping too quickly to conclusions, we might just have a shot at being good friends. #misunderstanding #communication #miscommunication Today I recorded and produced this Coffee Break and tomorrow's Your Own Best Company Podcast. It's a good one featuring my friend, author and impresario Teresa Funke. For the self-employed entrepreneur, a sabbatical might be the last thing you think about doing, and if you were to take one, it would probably have an agenda attached. We don't usually just decide to take time off for just being. After the launch of her book, Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life, author and publisher Teresa Funke was shown by her assistant that she was juggling the management of eighteen projects. Then when the Covid Pandemic started, her three streams of revenue all simultaneously ended. She tried to pivot just like everyone else was, but ultimately found that she was really ready for something else - but what? Finally, in June 2021 she landed on the idea that what was happening could be called a sabbatical, and it wasn't the kind of sabbatical we typically associate with that word. This wasn't going to be a time of focused production, it was going to be something else. Here on Your Own Best Company Teresa tells us the rest of the story. As a fiction writer, Teresa Funke celebrates ordinary people. In fact, she takes a very unusual approach to her stories—they are all based on interviews with real people. Teresa’s latest is War on a Sunday Morning. Written for readers age nine and up, War on A Sunday Morning is about a 13-year-old girl named Rose Williams. Rose has trouble fitting in. She is shy. Every time her family moves to a new navy base, she wishes she could be more like her fearless brother. And then, on a Sunday morning in December of 1941, Rose hears the roar of low-flying planes. Soon, Rose realizes that, scared or not, everyone must be daring in times of war. War on A Sunday Morning is the fifth book in Theresa’s Home Front Heroes novels, which have all focused on different conflicts and different main characters. Theresa’s short stories, articles, and essays have appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. Two of her essays were listed as Notable Essays by the prestigious "Best American Essays" series. She also writes a popular blog, "Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life." Teresa has built an arts-based business that operates on the assumption that artists, businesses, civic groups, and individuals can collaborate to bring new programs into communities that benefit those in need.
