For this Out Takes, we decided to get into the festive season by looking at two new Christmas themed films that explore queer stories within the family dynamic that is often overlooked in these genre. First up we took a look at ‘The Christmas Writer’ from Tello Films which is the first network dedicated to telling stories featuring and about lesbian/queer women and is the world's longest running LGBTQ+ streaming platform with the biggest library of sapphic holiday films available anywhere. Their latest sapphic holiday-themed film follows Noel, a bestselling lesbian Christmas author who loses her holiday muse and experiences writer's block, so she returns to her quaint hometown in search of renewed inspiration. What she finds is an unexpected love story that even she couldn't have written… We really enjoyed this film and jumped at the chance to speak to Christin Baker, the film's director and CEO of Tello Films, and Stacey Lee Powell, her real life partner and one of the stars of ‘The Christmas Writer’, from their homebase of Nashville. We covered a lot in this two-part interview, including the intent behind Tello Films, the importance of representation in lesbian and sapphic series, movies, and shorts plus the all-important question, what makes a great queer Christmas movie. We then moved on to ‘Oh.What.Fun.’, the new Christmas film streaming now on Prime Video, with an all-star cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Denis Leary, Chloe Grace Moretz, Felicity Jones, Danielle Brooks, Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, Maude Apatow and Joan Chen. We had high hopes for this one, especially with a queer character in the mix, so listen to our review to see if it lives up to the hype. The post ‘The Christmas Writer’ with special guests Christin Baker and Stacey Lee Powell plus ‘Oh.What.Fun.’ appeared first on Out Takes.

Prophecy Radio episode #121 is our chance to give you all our highlights from Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. We hit on our favorite moments, favorite characters, and talk a bit about what we would change if we had the chance. We also talk about the major Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news, including Leah Sava Jeffries' big win at the NAACP Image awards, as well as read some listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:34) Leah won the NAACP Image award! She is so deserving, it's not even funny. Hopefully this is just the first of many… we're looking at you, Emmy Awards. There's a new boxset with the first book in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, The Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and The Trials of Apollo. It's the perfect gift for old Rick Riordan fans to give to new readers in their lives. Stacey Lee (beloved author of Winston Chu vs. The Whimsies) has a new book coming out April 23 called Kill Her Twice. It's a murder mystery set in 1932 Los Angeles Chinatown. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 favorites wrap up (00:15:13) Overall feelings for season 1? (Spoiler Alert: We liked it.) We have similar thoughts on our favorite episode. Kristen got into the doc first and stole all the best answers. We're big fans of impertinence. We're sensing a theme: We're big fans of the show's portrayal of Grover. There are some strong feelings about our favorite gods this season. What surprised us the most? Let's face it, we all wanted season 1 to be a million episodes, but eight still felt a little short to us. If we were in charge, what would we have changed about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1? Feedback (00:52:50) You guys had some really wonderful reactions to our adjustments to the podcast structure. Thanks for hanging with us as we find a new normal. Ensign Davies reminds us that an animated Kane Chronicles adaptation would not be the death of crossover potential. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 122, in which we'll be talking all things A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel, and maybe have a guest host stop by for the discussion! In Winston Chu vs. The Whimsies, Stacey Lee, an award-winning and best-selling author of YA fiction, draws middle-grade readers into a modern reimaging of a classic Chinese folktale—replete with magic, boba, and lots of trash talking. At its center is Winston, an awkward, struggling teen with a big heart. While skateboarding home with a pie in hand, Winston happens to save a local shopkeeper—the proprietor of Mr. Pang's Whimsies—from getting robbed. As a reward, Mr. Pang invites Winston to choose any oddity in the store, with a word of caution: the first thing Winston touches will be the thing he gets. Should he choose the “Far-Seeing Eyeballs” or maybe the “Kick-Me Boots”? As he ponders all the weird treasures, a magpie flies under a shelf, and, without thinking, Winston grabs an old broom to sweep it out. Mr. Pang hands him the broom and a complimentary dustpan and says, “Congratulations.”
Prophecy Radio episode #72 is all about Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee. We do a deep-dive into the latest Rick Riordan Presents book, with both a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section. We also tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including our live and in-the-moment reactions to the Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods cover reveal and accompanying interview with Rick Riordan. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:04:01) The Chalice of the Gods cover reveal dropped just as we started our news section. We go through the interview one question at a time, and talk about Victo Ngai's artwork for the cover. We can't stop saying nice things about Walker Scobell—we're so excited to see him as Percy and beyond. Read Riordan posted an article to celebrate Black heroes with fan-favorite titles from Rick Riordan Presents. We also find out Serwa Boateng by Roseanne A. Brown will be a trilogy! Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee (00:31:23) This book is total chaos, but it's purposeful and we kind of loved it. Don't forget to check out Karen's Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies book review. Stacey was so good at capturing a 12-year-old boy's voice. Kristen tells us her experience with listening to the audiobook, narrated by Brian Kim McCormick. But what is this story actually about?? Well, let us tell you. Winston is a bit chaotic and doesn't always look before he leaps—but we love that this becomes an asset for him. We take a moment to talk about sports. Which of Winston's friends did we like best? Phillipa broods for most of the book, but she still looks out for Winston whenever she can. She was totally a standout character, and we loved her relationship with Winston by the end of the book. Monroe totally surprised us! Was it surprising that Winston and Phillipa had such a good relationship with Coco? Okay, Not-Coco was SUPER, SUPER CREEPY though. Let's talk about Mr. Pang, because he's the definition of chaotic neutral. Spoilers begin at 01:03:50. Winston's journey to understanding what happened to his father was really nuanced. We were super worried about Monroe's character to begin with, but he ended up being pretty smooth! How do we feel about Dani's aunt? Either way, we loved Dani, and we can't wait to see more of her! Will there be more jealousy in the second book from Winston's teammates over Dani? Okay, it's time to talk about the Cowherd and the Cloud Weaver. It's cool that this story takes place inside Winston's everyday life. We'd never heard of Mirth and Sorrow before, and it made Mr. Pang's story so much more interesting. But Mr. Gu was hella suspicious the whole time. We're so glad that Winston's dog tags survived the process. Is Coco going to have trauma for the rest of her life? Will she have residue? Winston Chu vs. the Wingmeisters is coming in 2024! We definitely want to learn more about Chinese mythology and folklore. Does Winston have a leg up on Mr. Gu? How did we forget about Lucky!!?? Feedback (01:32:45) Thank you to the winners of our J. Maya giveaway! Karen goes over the results for the poll in which we asked everyone what their favorite short story was. Seaweedbrain Podcast is funnier than us, and we're okay with that. Prophecy Radio episode #71 celebrates Percabeth in honor of Valentine's Day, and we can't wait to talk about how naturally their relationship evolved over the course of all five Percy Jackson and the Olympians books. Plus, we talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the the Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies sequel title, as well as read and discuss “Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes.” Honestly, we kind of impressed ourselves this week, because it was the perfect story to read alongside our PercyxAnnabeth discussion. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:03:06) The Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief movie has been out for 13 years! It once again makes us appreciate how long it's taken to get a faithful adaptation of this book. Read Riordan posted a belated Valentine's Day gift guide from some overlooked demigods. While Rachel Elizabeth Dare isn't a demigod, her answer was probably the best out of all of them. There was also a cute little interview between Rick Riordan and Stacey Lee, and we even found out the name of the Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies sequel! Daniel José Older's shop is now open, which means you can get signed copies of his stuff! Jason Gray Stanford has confirmed he'll be in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 as Maron the satyr. Percabeth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) (00:10:55) Valentine's Day seemed like the perfect excuse to talk about Percabeth—especially because we just finished the first series! Let's talk about where they started out in Lightning Thief. It was kind of nice they were strangers and then became friends because of their quest. That Athena vs. Poseidon rivalry is REAL. Grover is the common denominator between these two. That, and being a demigod. That first Seaweed Brain is truly something special. Next up is Sea of Monsters, and things are TENSE. That being said, Annabeth really opens up in this book, though that was sort of out of her control. What's a little kiss on the cheek amongst friends? Titan's Curse is where the feelings start coming hard and fast. The idea of Annabeth becoming a Hunter of Artemis is…not ideal. We hope there's lots of Leah in this season of the show. Aphrodite definitely helps Percy realize his feelings are not just platonic. In Battle of the Labyrinth we get a real kiss! Unfortunately, confusion over Luke, Rachel, and Calypso means these two aren't really on the same page. This extends to The Last Olympian, where they're separated for a good chunk of the book. But that doesn't mean Annabeth wouldn't sacrifice her life for Percy! And what does Percy do in return? Decline immortality, of course. That underwater kiss means these two are definitely together! Was this a fitting conclusion to their relationship? Thank goodness we'll get more in the Heroes of Olympus series. We've both got some favorite moments we want to talk about in depth. And a couple favorite lines that are super special, too. We'll have to do this again when we finish the Heroes of Olympus series. “Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes” (00:57:16) We still can't get over how perfect it was that we picked “The Staff of Hermes” to read this week. Percy and Annabeth have been together for one month now! Kristen really felt for Percy in this opening scene. HERNIAS ARE US. Wait, no. That's not right. Karen can appreciate the Mortal Kombat reference, even if it wasn't spelled correctly. Poor George and Martha! This story confirms Luke had feelings for Annabeth, which we're just gonna gloss over. More interestingly, it seems like all has NOT been forgiven between Annabeth and Hermes. It sounds like Janus is still messing up network television. Percy agrees to a deal with Hermes, and they have to stop using Annabeth's shield for a cheese platter. Cacus' hideout was, like, super disgusting. That said, we actually kind of liked him? He has that entrepreneurial spirit! The staff being stolen is kind of a big deal, and this story has a lot more impact on the canon of the series than “The Singer of Apollo” did. Annabeth's shield gets destroyed here, which explains why we don't remember it from the rest of the series! Percy's “solution” to their problem wasn't great. LASER MODE is pretty cool, albeit dangerous. Don't try this at home, kids. HER NAME IS ANNABETH AND SHE'S ONE OF A KIND. With Cacus defeated, Percy and Annabeth get to go on a lovely date for their one-month anniversary. Feedback (01:22:00) JustAPositiveGuy has a great headcanon for Percabeth. Krose reminds us how many great moments for Annabeth and Percy there will be in Heroes of Olympus. We also asked everyone what Percy would've become the god of, and we got some truly inspired answers. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 72, where we'll discuss Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #70 wonders what if certain events in Percy Jackson and the Last Olympain were changed? How would it affect the rest of the book, and the series as a whole? Plus, we talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi cover reveal, as well as read and discuss “Percy Jackson and the Singer of Apollo.” We might be done reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians now, but we've still got plenty to discuss before we move onto The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles #1). New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:07) Don't forget that we're giving away THREE copies of J. Maya's debut Ep, Poetic License. Visit us on Instagram and Twitter, and then follow the instructions to enter. Jelena Milinkovic has been cast as the Nereid. Did you catch the Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi interview, cover reveal, and excerpt!? Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee is now out in the world! Read an excerpt and meet Mr. Pang. Oh, and you can also go read Karen's spoiler-free Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies book review to see if it's something you'd also enjoy! Becky dashes our hopes of getting a Percy Jackson video game anytime soon. What If… season 5: Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:14:56) It's yet again time for another rendition of What If…, where we change one small aspect of the Percy Jackson universe and see how it would affect the rest of the story. Karen's first suggestion isn't very clever, but it's definitely an interesting alternate universe to consider. What if…Kronos had won!? Would the trio even still be alive? Would Hades side with Kronos, or would he just hole up in the Underworld? And what about the rest of the gods? Which ones would be on Kronos' side, which would go into hiding, and which would play double agents? What does the collapse of Western Civilization look like? There's probably a book for that. Would another hero rise in order to kill Kronos? Kristen wonders what if…someone other than Beckendorf had accompanied Percy to the Princess Andromeda? Who would've gone instead, and why is Clarisse such a perfect answer? How would Beckendorf still being alive affected the Battle of Olympus? Would Silena's arc have played out any differently? Rachel writes in to ask what if…Beckendorf had survived the explosion? Kristen's idea gave Karen goosebumps, and now we're kind of bummed it didn't happen that way! Karen was wondering about Silena, too. What if…Silena had been able to convince Clarisse to leave camp? Would she have survived the drakon, and if so, would the others have forgiven her if she hadn't made the ultimate sacrifice? What would her life had been like after that? Would Clarisse have been her friend still? Would Clarisse have even been able to defeat the drakon without the anger over Silena's death that caused the Blessing of Ares? Now Kristen wants to know what if…Percy didn't take a dip in the River Styx? How much would this have changed his relationship with Annabeth? Karen is an optimist and thinks it wouldn't have changed anything. Would more people have died if Percy wasn't invincible? What if…Will Solace had died during the Battle of Manhattan? We've decided Nico and Will still would've been boyfriends forever. What if…Ethan Nakamura had changed sides? How would this have changed the final scene? Would he have played double agent? Rachel writes in to ask what would have happened if Percy did become a god, and our first question is…what would he have been the god of!? Is there any reality in which this could've happened? What other requests could Percy have made? We have SO many cool ideas that would've really shaken up the series. Krose13_99 wants to know what would have happened if the Ares cabin had been there for the whole fight? “Percy Jackson and the Singer of Apollo” (00:57:23) Next up, we're reading a short story that takes place after the events of The Last Olympian. Rick sure does know how to hook you with a first line. What a visual! We're definitely curious to learn more about Juniper and the other dryads and nature spirits. Why is Grover suggesting to pin a tail on the human!? Apollo has a very specific look, and we know exactly what to picture when he's first described. The Chryseae Celedones are super interesting…and very dangerous. We need a whole album of songs Apollo would sing. Isn't it cool that we recognized Apollo's lyre from the time we did the Deep Dive on Hermes? Percy controls the Mist here, and it's kind of a big deal!! Grover is not so great at controlling the magic of the lyre, though. Why didn't anyone tell Percy that the celedon could turn into a bird!? Blackjack is too busy looking for a girlfriend to help out. About when does this short story take place in the chronological timeline? It's a good thing Percy didn't lose more than his pants. Annabeth continues to be Percy's anchor, and we love it so much! Percy is brilliant, and his plan truly is inspired. So much for getting any kind of reward, but at least they didn't have to listen to Apollo sing. Feedback (01:20:55) Nyklaus writes in while we're recording to give us some more What If scenarios. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 71, where we'll tackle Percabeth's arc throughout Percy Jackson and the Olympians, plus discuss “Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes.” This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Prophecy Radio episode #69 invites a very special guest—J. Maya, of “Achilles Heel” fame—to join us and talk about her debut EP, Poetic License, as well as her hopes and dreams for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians soundtrack. Plus, we talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies‘ imminent release date, as well as read and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 23. This is the final chapter in the book, which means we've made it to the end of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series!! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:36) Happy birthday to Glynn Turman! Don't forget to pick up Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee, which comes out on February 7! Read Riordan had a couple articles this week, one in which we're introduced to Dani, as well as the Cowherd and the Cloud Weaver. Congratulations to Yoon Ha Lee (Tiger Honor) and Mark Oshiro (You Only Live Once, David Bravo) who made it into the 2023 Rainbow Book List Top 10 Titles for Young Readers! We have a new Rick Riordan Presents author in Sarah Dass! Kristen is a little skeptical of all these creepy tree stories, but Karen is totally on board. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 has officially wrapped production! It's now time for the show to enter post-production, which involves a lot of editing, music, and visual effects. Did you see all the pictures and videos from the wrap party? It looked beautiful! And Walker's little “Send Help” video was so cute, too! Can you believe it took Rick eight months to notice they'd misspelled his name on his set ID tag? According to IMDb, Jennifer Shirley has been added to the cast as The Oracle. Interview with J. Maya (00:13:12) You are now entering a post-You-Have-Met-J. Maya world! Deferring Harvard Law to build a music career is a huge decision to make, so we're curious what convinced her this was the right choice for her. “Two Roads” is about that very choice, and talks about giving up stability to follow your dream, so we're curious if J. Maya has figured out how to find stability in a creative career like this. Yes, we are definitely all “we'd rather be home reading” people. J. Maya has built an incredible audience for herself, especially on TikTok and Instagram, and we just have to know what her secret is! Social media has its pros and cons, but it certainly allows artists to be authentically themselves and build a community of like-minded people. But we also have to know—how do you avoid getting burnt out from social media? As book people, it's so important to find time to read for pleasure. We're all a big fan of “Prophecies” here. How did J. Maya's parents react when “Achilles Heel” went viral and she decided to quit her job to pursue music? Karen has a lot of feelings about this song, so strap in for this one. Our advice is for all ages! You, too, can achieve your dreams when you are An Old. We get some background information on “Achilles Heel.” What makes Greek mythology (and mythology in general) so captivating? If you love mythology, make sure you check out her song “Golden Age.” And if you're a Percy Jackson fan, you're gonna want to listen to “Library Card” super closely. But that's not the only one that references the series! J. Maya breaks down some of her favorite musicians (and musicals!). Now we're really getting into the Percy Jackson content! Favorite book in the series? Favorite character? How excited is J. Maya about Percy Jackson and the Olympians? We take some time to talk about how important Aryan and Leah's casting is and will continue to be. Plus, let's not forget about Rick Riordan Presents! We play a little rapid fire game matching up genres of music with characters from the book. If J. Maya had her pick of genres or eras of music to put in the show, what would they be? Which scene would she love to write a song for? What does J. Maya have in store for 2023? What are her hopes and dreams? This was such a fun episode, and we're so grateful J. Maya took the time to chat with us! Make sure you stick around for details about our giveaway for J. Maya's debut EP, Poetic License. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:47:37) It's time to talk about the FINAL CHAPTER—The Last Olympian chapter 23. We're excited and sad at the same time! We wonder how Nico's undead warriors are compensated for their labor. This universe is so rich, and we're always coming up with more stories we'd like to read. We're so glad the Hermes Cabin has a little more space these days. What exactly was Poseidon thanking Percy for?? That joke about Poseidon having other children was a little mean… How did they fit all the names of the fallen on that Empire State Building bead?? We're so happy to see Hestia back at Camp Half-Blood. Annabeth is totally staying in New York City to keep an eye on Olympus' rebuilding and definitely not for any other reasons. Maybe that next Great Prophecy will be decades for now…but it's unlikely. This IS Rick Riordan after all. Isn't it weird how fast we got through these five books? It's great seeing Annabeth and Rachel as friends at the end of this one. We're gonna save our big thoughts on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series in another episode! Feedback (02:10:35) Here are the composers Henry had in mind for the show. “Run Boy Run” by Woodkid would be an incredible song to have on the show, too! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 70, where we'll do our What If…? scenarios for The Last Olympian, plus discuss “Percy Jackson and the Singer Apollo.” This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Prophecy Radio episode #68 dives into the connection between astrology and Greek mythology—specifically talking about the stories behind the zodiac signs. Plus, we talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the fact that Zeus and Poseidon have finally been cast in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as read and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 22. After this, there's only one more chapter to go! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:01:36) Mark gives us some stats on their signing of The Sun and the Star. Is Rick a doodler? We're not so sure he is… It's Nico di Angelo's birthday! This article made us realize we forgot an important detail about his sister, Bianca. Read Riordan answers the question—What exactly ARE the whimsies? Don't forget that Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee comes out on February 7! Rick teases a possible blooper reel, and we are HERE for it. Midgard Times (of all places) lets us know about the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians filming end date. And yes, it's now finally time to talk about Rick's January 26 blog post, aka the place where we finally get to meet Zeus and Poseidon. We wonder why they don't announce actors until after they're done filming? We definitely know Lance Reddick from a few places, and he's gonna make an awesome Zeus. And Toby Stephens? We just learned a VERY interesting fact about him this morning. We might be a little less familiar with him, but you can't deny he looks like he's gonna be an awesome Poseidon. We wonder which demigods won't show up in season 1. Will Argus be completely CGI in the show? Astrology and Greek mythology (00:32:28) First, we've got to talk about the Babylonians. Did you know there were originally about 17 or 18 constellations in the zodiac? Aries was first associated with a shepherd, and then later with the ram. Even the Egyptians kept this meaning, which they associated with Amon-Ra (no relation to the football player). Everything comes back to Percy Jackson, which is excellent news for us, a Percy Jackson podcast. Taurus is tied to the spring equinox, which leads down some interesting paths that we are choosing not to explore too deeply. We're already noticing a pattern with Herakles… Moving into Gemini, we meet Castor and Pollux, which are a pair of names you've probably heard before, even if you aren't familiar with the mythological origins. Cancer seems to be a bit of a newer constellation. Surprise, surprise, Herakles is once again involved in this one. Have you read Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons? The constellation of Leo has been associated with the lion for a long time and amongst many different cultures. We never knew Hera was the Oprah of constellations. Unfortunately for Kristen specifically, the stories behind Virgo and Libra are very confusing. Demeter, Astraea, Dike, and Persephone are all possible players in this game. We try to puzzle out how all of these figures are associated with the zodiac and it breaks our brains a little bit. Kristen keeps making How I Met Your Mother references and they go right over Karen's head. In case you were wondering, this is NOT a Brooklyn Nine-Nine podcast. Scorpio's myth is pretty straight forward. Babylonia probably saw more scorpions than jellyfish. The god Nergal from Babylonian mythology is somehow even stranger than Chiron and his human legs. There were simply no constellations before Herakles. It seems Capricorn has always been a goat-fish. Okay, it feels a little TOO convenient that Pan could just grow a fishtail to escape. No matter how you spin it, Aquarius is associated with flooding. This sign is also associated with Ganymede, who we'll meet in Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. There are so many things we're just gonna skip over. Shapeshifting was a PLAGUE back in the day, apparently. We go on a WHOLE journey about ichthyocentaurs and Camp Fish-Blood. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:14:40) Let's talk about The Last Olympian chapter 22. Rainbow came to visit, and we're so happy!! How did Rachel get into Camp Half-Blood unscathed? And why wasn't Chiron more concerned about Rachel's fate!? Do you think they'll push Rachel's story to earlier in the TV series in case we don't get a Heroes of Olympus series? The Great Prophecy is officially Prophecy Count #32! The memorials were super sad and beautiful at the same time. We're so happy Nico got the credit and acceptance he deserves!! Annabeth and Tyson have come such a long way as friends!! We kind of wish we had a bit more Percabeth at the end here. Rick is CRUEL for naming this chapter “I Am Dumped.” How did neither one of us pick “And it was pretty much the best underwater kiss of all time”!? The end of this chapter is just so ICONIC. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 69, where we'll have a chat with J. Maya about music—both her own and what she'd like to see in the show. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Want to challenge yourself without the pressure that comes with traditional competition? Feel like trying something new that won't have you comparing your former self to your current self? This week's guests Teri Smith and Dana Katz suggest trying an FKT, or fastest known time, a challenge where you run, hike, or in some cases bike or “multi-sport” along a route as quickly as you can to try and set an FKT. When perimenopause upended Teri's competitive identity as an ultrarunner, her friend Dana coached her to complete an FKT—nearly 190 miles of traversing the Olympic Peninsula of Washington—and it transformed her life, as you'll hear in her own words in this week's show. Dana is the owner and coach at UltraU in Portland and also coaches with Women who FKT. Teri is an avid backpacker, trail runner, cross country skier, and mom. They are both part of the Women Who FKT Project, a group of women who are on a mission to help more women and underserved minorities have meaningful adventures in the outdoors. Part 2! Five women take on the goal of highlighting women's FKTs everywhere. Today I speak with Dana Katz, Danielle Snyder, and Teri Smith. Teri Smith is an avid backpacker, trail runner, cross country skier and mom. No stranger to operating in areas where women are scarce, she has been a co-race director for the Hagg Mud Ultras, a race photographer, and a ham radio coordinator for local trail races. She just completed a 188 mile FKT across the Olympic Peninsula of Washington this past summer with fellow Women Who FKT coordinator Stacey Lee. Danielle Snyder is a coach and licensed clinical social worker and can talk through the mental barriers that women face. She creates programs help to increase athlete's mental endurance, resiliency, and positive self-talk. https://territoryrun.co/pages/danielle-snyder Dana is a coach and unquestionably the most enthusiastic member of the leadership and the best at making this accessible to women of all different speeds. She has experienced the high of insanely awesome PR days, the low of ultramarathon disappointments and the extreme low of foot injuries lasting way too long. https://www.ultraufitness.com/links.html More from me @hilsport55 More from Women Who FKT @womenwhofkt Visit Athletic Greens for a FREE 1 year supply of immune-supporting Vitamin D AND 5 FREE travel packs with your first purchase at http://athleticgreens.com/TRWP Backlog of episodes here: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=26713033
Five women take on the goal of highlighting women's FKTs everywhere. In 2021, only a third of the FKTs set in the PNW were by women. Of 353 routes established in Oregon and Washington, only 41% have women's times. Marta Fisher and her team TAKE ACTION AND SHAKE THINGS UP. I speak to all 5 women in the leadership team to find out how we can flip the stats. Today we chat with Marta Fisher and Stacey Lee. Stacey grew up in a semi-traditional Chinese-American household; where academics and music were emphasized and encouraged and athletics was discouraged. As a result, she wasn't in her mid-thirties until she truly discovered her love of running and within 6 months of starting a "Couch to 5k" program completed her first marathon. Since then, she's raced distances from 5k (road, XC and trail) to attempting her first 100 miler. Stacey's goal is to be a diverse voice in the local running community, to help enable other women of color to discover the sport, and to build a more diverse and inclusive running community. As a little kid, Marta was the least athletic of 4 siblings. But that changed when she found running as a teenager. Over the years, the kind of running she does has changed (track/x-c, road marathons, casual jogging, trail running, ultra running) but her identity as a runner has not. One of her big running goals is to stick around the sport long enough that she gets an award for being the old woman that finishes. She definitely favors the steeper, more mountainous trails over flat, fast ones.
