The School Poisoning Tragedy in Caledonia, Ohio    ABOUT THIS EPISODE On episode 44 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we talk with James Van Keuren about his book, The School Poisoning Tragedy in Caledonia, Ohio, and the tragic but little known story of what a small community in Ohio went through in the years and decades after WWII. We’ve always understood the veteran experience in broadest terms that include the full range of issues veterans, their families, and our communities go through before, during, and after military service. Some of these issues are well known, such as post traumatic disorders or military-related illnesses known as Agent Orange, Gulf War Syndrome, or the most recent toxic burn pit exposures. Also fitting into these experiences are the social, political, and economic consequences communities endure as a result of exposures to dangerous military-industrial activities abroad and at home. Dr. James Van Keuren’s book tells the tragic but little known story of what a small community in Ohio went through in the years and decades after WWII: “In the early 1960s, the River Valley Local School District built its middle school, its high school and its athletic fields in the former Marion Engineer Depot. During World War II, the depot had used the land for heavy equipment rehab, military artillery practice, materials storage, burial of construction debris and burning of waste materials and fuels. “In 1997, a River Valley High School nurse grew concerned about the high rate of leukemia and other cancers in graduates. Then a stunning news report announcing a 122 percent increase in death rates over thirty years in the Marion area sparked an investigation. “Was the land to blame? The question of what may have been known about the contaminates on the school grounds sent shock waves through the community that still linger today.” Meanwhile, be sure to check out another conversation with Dr. Van Keuren discussing WWII POW camps in Ohio on episode 43 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast. Dr. James Van Keuren is a retired professor of educational administration and dean of the Dwight Schar College of Education at Ashland University, as well as a former high school teacher, principal and superintendent. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, and his most recent book, A Tribute to the 109th Evacuation Hospital (SM), traces his father-in-law’s service during World War II. Van Keuren has been married to his wife, Pat, for forty-nine years, and they have two daughters, Michelle (Drew) Scott and Christie (Dale) Murdoch, in addition to grandchildren Hailey Scott, Weston Murdoch and Cooper Murdoch. Dr. James Van Keuren WWII POW Camps in Ohio    ABOUT THIS EPISODE On episode 43 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we talk with James Van Keuren about his book, World War II POW Camps in Ohio. Drawing on first-person accounts from soldiers, former POWs and residents, as well as archival research, Dr. Van Keuren delves into the neglected history of Ohio's POW camps. During the 1940s, more than six thousand prisoners of war resided at nine camps in Ohio. The Italian POWs arrived first, charming "the locals with their affable, easygoing natures, while their German successors often put on a serious, intractable front." Some local residents fondly recall working alongside the prisoners and reuniting with them later in life. Others held the prisoners in disdain, feeling that they were coddled while natives struggled with day-to-day needs.         This podcast episode was recorded March 24, 2020 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. From the start, the camps were a study in contradictions. The Italian prisoners who arrived first charmed locals with their affable, easygoing natures, while their German successors often put on a serious, intractable front. AL DEFAZIO: I come from a little town called, Altavilla Irpina, in the province of Avellino. STEFANO BALLINI: This is Stefano Ballini and are you are listening to the Veteran Voices History Podcast. CAROLE ZIPPY BRENNAN: When my dad and I were alone, he told different stories.  He told about the only regret he ever had—the regret of the boy who died in his arms.  Both of them just kids, nineteen years old. And when my dad told me that story about not being able to get the address and the names of that young man, he said to me, “I just wanted them to know that their son died in the arms of a fellow soldier.  He didn’t die out on the battle field.  He didn’t die in a muddy trench.”  And my dad, at ninety-one, started to cry.  He remembered all of those stories.  And we have to remember the stories of all the men who fought.  Stefano, there are not enough words to say thank you for keeping the memory of Frank [Gervasi], and Michael [Vernillo], and my dad [Vittorio Zippi], and my uncle [Lou], and countless others—you’re keeping them alive.  You are a witness.  Thank you, Stefano. Welcome Stefano, to Pittsburgh. STEFANO BALLINI: Thank you, thank you. This is your second time here? Yes. Very exciting? Yes. You love Pittsburgh. [laughter] Yes, I love Pittsburgh.  I love it so much. [laughter] Your film, The Red Trickle of the Soul, is your second documentary film. Yes. Before we get into talking about your film, tell us a little bit about your background, what you do in Italy, and your interest in filmmaking. Yes, I started about 8 years ago with the first film called, Il Treno che Bucò il Fronte. In English, The Train Through the Warfront. It is the story of my father who embarked in Anzio with the allies in 1944.  That is was the first film and it was very successful. The President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, invited me to Rome for the "Day of Remembrance." After that people became interested in my work and what I did, so I also had to make other films. The last film, The Red Trickle of the Soul is the second film about veterans,

Eric Rood | Veteran Aviator Oral Histories  On Episode 37 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we talk about recording veterans oral histories in the world of aviation with Eric Rood of the Experimental Aircraft Association's Timeless Voices of Aviation project.   Eric Rood of Columbus, Ohio has been capturing, preserving, and sharing veterans’ stories since 2006.  In addition to recording locally, each year Eric travels to the Experimental Aviation Association’s annual convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to interview veteran aviators—on the fly, so to speak. Being at Oshkosh working with EAA's Timeless Voices of Aviation project is a wonderful experience for any oral historian or aviation enthusiast (Eric is a pilot, himself), but it is a technical challenge to record so many interviews in such a short period of time.  But, he admits, preserving these stories is our obligation to history and a tribute to our veterans' service—especially our WWII veterans. Producer's Note: Nick Grimes is the host of Longest War: The Post-9/11 Veterans Podcast and a combat Army veteran of Afghanistan. Florent Plana | World War II Veterans Memories  On Episode 35 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we talk with French historian Florent Plana as he travels the US recording the stories of WWII veterans.     After finishing graduate school, French historian Florent Plana knew he wanted to do something different for awhile—something personally meaningful, of value and use. Unlike many of his fellow graduates, he didn’t want to take a year off to celebrate, recreate, loaf around, or jump straight into a dull professional job. Instead, he ventured to the United States, bought an old RV camper, and set off to meet and record the stories of WWII veterans—one chance encounter at a time. His passion for WWII and respect for those who landed upon the shores of France began when he was a child, “the day I saw the Normandy beaches for the first time,” he says, “where thousands of Allied soldiers landed and paid the ultimate sacrifice during the summer of 1944.” When Florent saw the National Cemetery of Colleville-Sur-Mer, where too many soldiers, sailors, and airmen were laid to rest after the war, he was deeply moved and honored by their sacrifice. Because of their service, Florent reminds all who listen, he and his country are free today. Florent holds more than a quiet debt of gratitude; he feels obligated to use his historical training to ensure that the experiences and stories of surviving WWII veterans—especially those who liberated France—do not vanish with time. Thus began World War II Veterans Memories, a cross-country oral history project recording, preserving, and sharing the stories of WWII veterans, wherever Florent finds them—the aisles of Walmart, a barbershop, an email from a soldier’s granddaughter, a posted to his Facebook page, or referral by a friend of a friend who knows a quiet old man down the street who, rumor has it, landed in the first wave at Normandy. These precious, first-hand stories, Florent knows, will soon be lost. So, he urgently schedules his next oral history interview, plots a course to some American city he’s never heard of, and drops his old RV into gear. Tom Davidson & Gwen Titley | Veterans of Beaver Valley On episode 34 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we have a conversation with Tom Davidson and Gwen Titley, part of the creative team producing the Veterans of Beaver Valley oral history series of The Beaver County Times.     When the travelling replica of the Vietnam War memorial came to Beaver, Pennsylvania in 2015, local newspaper editor Patrick O’Shea and journalist Tom Davidson of The Beaver County Times were so moved by the experience, especially the public's interest in veterans' stories, they wanted to honor veterans themselves by using their newspaper as a platform to capture and share the experiences of local veterans. Shortly thereafter, the Veterans of Beaver Valley series was launched, profiling local veterans of all eras and branches of service through multimedia presentations in print and through digital online media. To date, Tom Davidson and his team--including videographer Gwen Titley and a host of still photographers and digital media specialists--have preserved the stories of more than twenty-six veterans.  The Veterans of Beaver Valley series continues to enjoys immense popularity with local veterans and the community. Tom Flynn | Avenue of 444 Flags & the War on Terror Memorial On episode 33 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we have a conversation with Tom Flynn of Mercer County, and we talk about patriotism, remembering, and preserving stories through his Avenue of 444 Flags and War on Terror veterans memorials in Heritage, Pennsylvania.     Tom Flynn grew up in Chicago, Illinois.  As a working class kid and the son of a steelworker, he joined the army after he could no longer pay for college.  While in the army he joined the famed 101st Airborne Division.  “It was all about discipline,” Tom insists.  “I needed discipline in my life at that time and I found it in the army.” After the army, Tom eventually finished his degree and became a certified public accountant and businessman.  In the late 1970s, an investment in a funeral home and cemetery brought him to Hermitage, Pennsylvania, but he soon realized that Western Pa is where he wanted to call home.  It was blue collar, and it reminded him of home. But it was during the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979 that Tom really made a mark on his adopted home.  In this podcast, we talk about the events that brought international fame to Hermitage. Jay Paisley | The Huffman Letters On episode 32 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we have a conversation with Jay Paisley, author of The Huffman Letters: Civil War Letters to Beaver County, Pennsylvania.      "In 1861, sixteen year old William Henry Huffman enlisted in the Union Army," writes Jay Paisley, chronicler of Huffman's family letters.  "Like Henry Fleming, from Stephen Crane's classic fictional novel, The Red Badge of Courage, Huffman did his duty.  Reading his letters, you will see the Civil War through the eyes of a real soldier, not a fictional character." Henry Huffman of Darlington Township, Beaver County, served with the 100th Pa Regiment (Roundheads) based in Lawrence County, he participated in over 20 battles, including Fredericksburg and Vicksburg, and he was a prisoner of war.  For the rest of his life, Huffman suffered the effects of war. "The more things change, they more they stay the same," Jay comments, referring to Huffman's struggle to collect on his veteran's disability pension -- a meager sum that today would equal less than $300 a month. Born in 1844, Huffman led a very long life as a gentleman farmer and activist in veterans' causes.  At 92, he died in 1936 under the care of a veterans hospital in Florida; it was a life of first hand historical experience and knowledge spanning the lives of Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler. Herschel Luckinbill | Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club On episode 31 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we have a conversation with Vietnam navy veteran Herschel Luckinbill of the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club about his growing program sharing veterans stories and giving back to the veterans community.     Madam Speaker, I rise today to recognize Herschel Luckinbill of Montgomery, Illinois, as the Illinois Veteran of the Month . . . The title of Veteran of the Month is bestowed upon individuals who have been exceptionally dedicated to honoring veterans and improving our community. We can never fully repay those who have risked and given their lives in service to our country, but because of the tireless efforts of advocates like Herschel Luckinbill, their sacrifice will not be forgotten. Madam Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me today in recognizing Mr. Herschel Luckinbill for his service to our country and to veterans in our community.  - US Representative Bill Foster After navy service during Vietnam, where he sailed aboard the first American ship that took direct fire from the Viet Cong, Hershel Luckinbill felt compelled to join the VFW, American Legion, and many other veterans’ organizations.  “I just felt the need to help give back to our veterans,” he says. Decades later, as part of his continued personal mission, Hershel runs the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club in Montgomery, Illinois—a nonprofit veterans' organization that gives veterans opportunities to meet regularly over breakfast for the camaraderie and to learn about happenings in the local veterans community. Alex Mena & Fiona Hall | Crew 713: The Men Who Flew The Irishman's Shanty On episode 30 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we have a conversation with documentary filmmakers Alex Mena and Fiona Hall, producers of Crew 713: The Men Who Flew "The Irishman's Shanty."     In May 1944, The Irishman’s Shanty was hit hard by the Luftwaffe while on a vital mission to destroy oil refineries at Politz, Germany, one of the most heavily defended targets of WWII. After action reports from fellow B-24s stated that the struggling ship, flown by the O’Sullivan Crew 713, dropped out of formation.  All Hell was breaking loose and it was chaotic up there.  She probably went down the reports stated.  After all, survival was unlikely on these missions, especially for the 492nd Bomb Group flying out of North Pickenham, England. They suffered more casualties than any other heavy bomber unit during WWII--or since. But somehow Crew 713 did survive the Politz raid, including Nemesio Mena who was the radio operator aboard The Irishman’s Shanty. Years later he would talk of surviving the Politz mission and other frightful experiences from his 30 missions over Europe.  He would also talk warmly about the kindness and endurance of the British people during his many months stationed in England.  Most of all, Nemesio would talk admirably about his fellow airmen—the brave young men of the 492nd Bomb Group. Throughout the years, Nemesio’s son Alex was listening to these stories.  And shortly before his father’s death a few years ago, the Dallas-based filmmaker decided, with his father's blessing, to bring these amazing stories to life because they needed to be shared with the public. And now, Alex Mena and producer Fiona Hall are nearing completion of Crew 713: The Men Who Flew “The Irishman’s Shanty,” a feature-length documentary about the O'Sullivan Crew and the 492nd Bomb Group—an innovative, media-rich project that presents veterans’ first-hand accounts and interviews, old letters and diaries, scholarly analysis, and animated re-enactments of actual events underscored by a provocative modern soundtrack.  It's an important historical story from our shared past--creatively told for our time. Note: Edward E. Picard of Carnegie, Pa was the right waist gunner on The Irishman's Shanty. Mr. Picard died in 2005, and so we are honored that this film will help tell his story for our local community.  This episode was recorded August 6, 2016. Valerie DeFazio-Vacula The Italian Campaign: The Forgotten War On episode 25 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we have a conversation with Valerie DeFazio-Vacula, author of The Italian Campaign: The Forgotten War - a true-life account of the experiences of Pittsburgh WWII veteran, Albert DeFazio.  Recorded March 19, 2016. Hosts: Kevin Farkas, Todd DePastino, with Bryan Chemini. Audiography: Kevin Farkas.     As school children, most Americans learned about Wold War II and the attack on Pearl Harbor, the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. But few people know much about the Italian Campaign during that war. Of all the western fronts in World War II, the Italian campaign cost the most lives. One of its survivors, Albert DeFazio, didn't like to talk about his experiences as an American soldier in World War II, but he was also concerned that so little was known about the suffering and death in Italy. It took Albert decades to be able to describe his experiences in World War II - memories that still haunt him. Now, after seventy years, Albert DeFazio has told his story of the war he cannot forget. The Italian Campaign: The Forgotten War is available through Barnes & Noble or by contacting the author at 412-704-7846.       OTHER WAYS TO FIND THE PODCAST jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('#slider_3642').owlCarousel({ responsive:{ 0:{ items:1 }, 480:{ items:2 }, 768:{ items:3 }, 980:{ items:4 }, 1200:{ items:4 }, 1500:{ items:4 } }, autoplay : true, autoplayTimeout : 5000, autoplayHoverPause : true, smartSpeed : 200, fluidSpeed : 200, autoplaySpeed : 200, navSpeed : 200, dotsSpeed : 200, loop : true, nav : true, navText : ['',''], dots : true, responsiveRefreshRate : 200, slideBy : 1, mergeFit : true, autoHeight : false, mouseDrag : true, touchDrag : true }); jQuery('#slider_3642').css('visibility', 'visible'); sa_resize_slider_3642(); window.addEventListener('resize', sa_resize_slider_3642); function sa_resize_slider_3642() { var min_height = '50'; var win_width = jQuery(window).width(); var slider_width = jQuery('#slider_3642').width(); if (win_width < 480) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 768) { var slide_width = slider_width / 2; } else if (win_width < 980) { var slide_width = slider_width / 3; } else if (win_width < 1200) { var slide_width = slider_width / 4; } else if (win_width < 1500) { var slide_width = slider_width / 4; } else { var slide_width = slider_width / 4; } slide_width = Math.round(slide_width); var slide_height = '0'; if (min_height == 'aspect43') { slide_height = (slide_width / 4) * 3; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else if (min_height == 'aspect169') { slide_height = (slide_width / 16) * 9; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else { slide_height = (slide_width / 100) * min_height; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } jQuery('#slider_3642 .owl-item .sa_hover_container').css('min-height', slide_height+'px'); } }); SUPPORT LOCAL HISTORY Let’s keep local history alive for future generations!  If you like our podcast, please help us continue this great educational program--for today and tomorrow.  Show your support by making a financial donation, underwriting the podcast, or advertising your business or service on the show.   jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('#slider_3943').owlCarousel({ items : 1, smartSpeed : 0, autoplay : false, autoplayHoverPause : false, smartSpeed : 0, fluidSpeed : 0, autoplaySpeed : 0, navSpeed : 0, dotsSpeed : 0, loop : true, nav : false, navText : ['',''], dots : false, responsiveRefreshRate : 200, slideBy : 'page', mergeFit : true, autoHeight : false, mouseDrag : true,
