"The Things Unsaid Stay With Us Forever. When That Love One Is Gone Forever, It's Too Late." - Kate Winslet. How many of us have things unsaid that we need to say? Is it too late? I don't think so. I believe that whether that individual is with us or on the other side, they can still hear your words. So SPEAK THEM!! Don't build resentment, a wall of fear, pain, frustration, so you never speak about how you feel. Write your thoughts down. Build the courage and strength to share them. I'm curious to hear how this makes you feel. What did you take from this podcast? What do you agree with? What do you not agree with? This is a time to learn together.

Hilde Hinton is a bestselling author of two books and big sister to Connie and Samuel Johnson. Her debut novel, "The Loudness of Things Unsaid" propelled Hilde reluctantly into the literary realm. But with her second novel now out in the world, in my humble opinion Hilde has unequivocally arrived. Released earlier this year, "A Solitary Walk on the Moon" (published by Hachette) is a delightful, tender and warm tale about ordinary people who make a difference and also about finding family outside of blood ties. A story which I suspected reflected elements of Hilde's extraordinary life. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with Hilde about this book on the podcast a little while ago.

Episode #109: You Can Hurt Them Worse (by leaving things unsaid) (song starts at 6:37) There are so many different places to start writing a song. Number one would be feeling, I would say. You can find it in a space within in yourself where you can be completely honest. That doesn't mean you have to wear your heart on your sleeve or hit prospective listeners over the head with the wet bus ticket of your therapy... But I find that if I write from a place of honesty..the result is: the lyrics and the music are going to ring true. This song was written back in 1986. It is song #12 in my song book. Yes, that's going back a wee way. The melody has stayed with me. Why ? It came from that honest place, from somewhere else (and from somewhere within…) That process is somehow hard to pin down in words. But as I do my best to do that on this podcast, the thing that gets concepts across is....feeling. What I say (and sing) between the words helps to tell the story. Which brings me to the lyrics of the song....You can hurt them worse by leaving things…unsaid. That's the whole chorus! As I recorded this episode, my eyes flicked onto the next page, and so I I've sung this one as well (shall we call it): ‘Are we in love'? I find a similarity between the opening riffs of both songs. Then I discover this song somehow answers the feature song. Ah the creative force. It's a healing one, that's for sure. By the way, I'd like to suggest a new genre for music: ‘P.S.' (petrol station). This relates to something that happened when I filled the car's tank up recently. I also talk about a gig I did back in 1986. Because this song took me right back in time. Want to join me? Here we go…. Lyrics are on my blog: www.petepascoe.worpress.com (plus seascapes. Cartoons and more).

I've talked often about how we can use our words to communicate, but it takes way more to truly connect. It's knowing our personality styles and how to speak to each other in a way where everyone is heard...and it's in the nonverbal cues that speak so loudly. We go over five nonverbal cues this week that are like shifting from song lyrics to a full musical performance. It's more than simply words - what is left unsaid that is showing up in your life?

Weeks before we all went in to lockdown mode, Elly Swope came in to our studio and talked to us about growing up in the Midwest and exploring her identity through music, then we all went on a roller coaster of emotions and shared new songs around the theme, “Things Unsaid”.
I want to impart my knowledge. I need to say something. I’m well read, clever, and can talk. What a dangerous combination. My brother used to ask me “why do you always have to fill silence with your voice”. When he first said it, I saw it as a badge of honour. I assumed the quiet had nothing to say. I also assumed the quiet weren’t thinking at all. Speaking is often just another impulse. It’s the verbalisation of unfiltered thought. Sometimes it’s not even a thought. Sometimes it’s a verbalisation of ego. Leaving things unsaid is good training to tame the sub conscious. But it’s also the right thing to do. Silence allows the others to speak and think. As a leader, the silence of the leader is powerful than a speech. Silence is action. Silence is a confident statement to say: ‘“I trust you and my team” I’ll keep my voice for when I’m being asked for an opinion. Image and attribution here. Cherrie Moraga's play THE MATHEMATICS OF LOVE takes off from the story of La Malinche, a Native woman who in myth became the collaborator of the colonizers of Mexico. Playwright and poet Cherrie Moraga, co-editor of the class feminist of color book, This Bridge Called My Back, discusses her new play, THE MATHEMATICS OF LOVE, with Lisa Dettmer. In a time-traveling re-encounter with a 16th century female slave-turned-slaveholder, a Mexican woman in the early stages of Alzheimers is forced to concede a radically revised ledger on her life; its loves and losses, in this play which opens at San Francisco's Brava Theater on August 10. The Stanford Daily says the play has “the power to render its audience speechless – to wrench us from our academic stupor, remind us of the importance of good art, and make us feel a little more awake because of it.” And Kate Raphael talks with authors Diana Paul and Jeanne McWilliams Blasberg, who both explore the duties that one generation owes to the next and the previous. Diana Paul's award-winning THINGS UNSAID explores the moral territory of the sandwich generation, who must simultaneously fulfill their obligations to their aging parents and their children reaching adulthood. Jeanne Blasberg's EDEN spotlights the choices of four generations of women in one family when faced with unplanned pregnancies, and chronicles the consequences of their decisions.
