Pregame with Maggie King As a young girl, Maggie planned on avoiding alcohol and drugs due to the negative effects it had on a few close family members. That plan changed as she started to struggle more with her sexuality and the pressure she felt to succeed in school. "Knowing that I was gay and knowing that I would have to fit in and have a boyfriend, I decided I would drink to try and make things easier." From the very beginning, her drinking was excessive, and she would frequently blackout. Maggie's addiction progressed into taking pain pills after experiencing a field hockey injury in college. Eventually, things came to a head as she started to have flashbacks from a past sexual assault that she had tried so hard to forget. She started drinking and using all day to block out the emotional pain that surrounded her trauma. It wasn't long until Maggie found herself on the roof of her college's counseling building, prepared to take her own life. As she stood on the ledge, ready to jump, she felt a tap on the shoulder, but no one was there. Maggie knew she had to ask for help immediately. Thankfully, she found the professional assistance that she needed and started to attend Alcoholics Anonymous. Today Maggie has been sober for more than 3 years. She's also the author of "Pregame: Alcohol, Addiction & Recovery through the Eyes of a College Student." You can connect with her on Instagram @MaggiexKing and find her book on Amazon. Maggie Kast has been a writer since the 1990's. In her book, Side by Side but Never Face to Face, she writes about Greta, her narrator, who has been wrenched from a long and tightly-circled marriage to Manfred, an Austrian Holocaust survivor. Coming from very different backgrounds, they sometimes abraded each other, but the friction struck sparks, and the marriage remained vital. Together they mourned the accidental death of a daughter and experienced a widening of spiritual horizons as they grieved. Today Maggie discusses coping with the pain of losing a daughter and the challenges of having a son with a developmental disability, including the stigma of his being labeled “retarded,” her journey to convert to catholicism, what drew her to the Hmong people of Vietnam and insight from her research into their unique culture, and her views on psychotherapy and philosophy.

In This Episode How to make sense and meaning out of a betrayal of expectations and health The role of meditation when changing your way of being and creating a shift Getting comfortable with the idea that nothing is permanent or lasts forever Why it’s a good thing to question your thoughts and stop believing them as fact Investigating your role in your own betrayal by turning inward instead of outward Quotes “I think that it’s important when we are talking about betrayal and having a breakthrough from that experience or coming out of the grief of having been betrayed, I think it is important for us to stop and be a little mindful as to how did we get there.” (2:49) “I was living out constant and consistent never-ending fear, that that is what drove the show. The fear always drove the show and that’s when I started to really get in touch with what that fear was about.” (8:03) “Most of us believe what we think, and very seldom do we check it out with anybody.” (13:16) “What meditation is about is for you to be able to notice that in that stillness your thoughts start to stray and take you away. And then in that noticing, bringing yourself back to that place of stillness.” (19:23) “What’s really important when you are thinking that you have been betrayed is for you to actually step back and survey the situation and ask yourself what was my part.” (21:57) Links Sat Sang House Website Find the full episode post here: https://pbtinstitute.com/104 Do you have Post Betrayal Syndrome?
