Permutation is a noun that means ‘a major change.’ The Latin word permutare (per myoo TAR ay) means ‘to change thoroughly.’ Our word of the day has changed only slightly after being imported into English and retained the same basic meaning. It may help to think of a permutation as a mutation that significantly alters the thing it changes. When Donna said she’d give me a haircut that would change my life, I was expecting a dramatic new style. But instead of the permutation I was expecting, I wound up with a look that wasn’t that different than the one I had before.

And Ryan says she is buying a bunch of frivolous stuff they don’t need like shoes and a wine club membership. When Donna comes on, she says she’s not buying anything they won’t eventually use or need and the sales are so incredible right now she is actually going to end up saving them money in the long run. If you want to write for print and online publications, you're going to have to pitch. A lot. The good news is, it will get easier, and you will build up a contact list. This is definitely a case where starting is the hardest part. What tone should you use? How long should the pitch be? When should you send it? There is no one right answer, and you'll learn what works for you, as you go. Cover what needs to be covered to pique the editor's interest and go from there. Now that we no longer need to be afraid of wild animals chasing us on a regular basis, our brains find other things to "protect" us from. Our brains want to keep us safe and bless their little metaphorical hearts, they do try. A bruised ego is not fun, but neither is it dangerous. This is one of the few areas where I agree with the tech bros of the world. Risk rejection, as often as you can, and it will build a version of you who just isn't concerned with being rejected. If an editor ignores your pitch, nothing happens to you, except you learn to improve your pitch over time. And maybe, that editor thinks of you when a more appropriate piece comes along.  Starting out, you're an unknown. And as an unknown, editors are less likely to respond to you. When Donna was first starting out, the low response rates were a problem. She didn't know if her pitches had even been seen. So, she started using a tracker in her email so she'd know if one didn't get opened and then she could decide how to progress. I use Streak to manage my contacts and email for Compass, and I'm forever appreciative of the included tracker. If you have Gmail, I suggest checking it out.      For full links and show notes visit compasspod.com/027 and to join us for the July 23 Are you Ready to Go Remote? webinar visit compasspod.com/webinar

Again With This: Beverly Hills, 90210 & Melrose Place

Donna has managed to avoid telling Gina the truth about her biological parentage for days -- weeks longer than any dumb baby should be expected to -- and finally finds a quiet moment to get Gina alone and spill it. Gina is, of course, horrified; she tells Donna she hates her; tells David she wants to be alone; then tells Dylan she doesn'twant to be alone. Dylan is in her room when David comes by, and when he stomps off in such a huff that both Gina and Dylan follow him to try to explain, David gets a little too physical than he probably should while he's anywhere near the valet stand. But David and Gina aren't the only ones Dylan's busting up: he also buys Kelly a painting she likes, sending Matt into more paroxysms of insecurity when he does a little investigating, finds out that it cost $16,000, and gives Kelly the 5000th ultimatum of their relationship. When Donna can't shut up about how important it is to be honest and not to keep shameful secrets, Noah finally admits that the reason he's not interested in attending a Harvard alumni party is that he's totally not a Harvard alumnus, at all. He asks her not to tell Kelly about it, and this seems to be the thing that finally causes Donna to wonder if he's actually the right guy for her? Elsewhere, Steve and Janet bring Maddy home from the hospital, which cues Steve to become an overprotective first-time parent cliche. Abortion: The Power of Forgiveness, Part 1

Truth On The Go: With Andrea Lennon

Donna Clifton shares her story about an unexpected pregnancy followed by an abortion. Donna’s story is like many others. Secret shame, deep depression, infertility, cutting in order to try and ease her pain, and despair of life. Donna talks about suffering in silence and the feelings she experienced as she sat in church week after week believing God would never forgive her. Thankfully, Donna experienced God’s love and forgiveness and is telling her story! She is helping women know how to deal with shame, guilt, fear, and regret. When Donna and I sat down and prerecorded the shows, we had no idea the decision (in New York) that was right around the corner or the onslaught of debates to follow. We simply had a conversation about the grace of God and the truth of His Word. I have watched the abortion discussions go back and forth. Sometimes gracious and sometimes not. At one point this week I was asked,“What do you think about abortion?” “Where do you stand on the issue?” I immediately wondered, “Is there any kind of hurt behind the question?” You see, everyone has a story. Sometimes people want to know what you believe about a particular topic because they are curious, but sometimes they are looking for help and not sure where to find it. I answered the question honestly. “I believe in life because God is the creator of life. I believe life is a gift and begins at conception. God’s Word is clear that we are called to value life and protect it.” Our conversation progressed as we hashed out all the details on the topic. I then looked at my friend and said, “Do you want to know the question I really wish people would ask? She said, “sure.” I said I wish people would ask, “What do you believe about Jesus?” Because Jesus is everything in these conversations. For the woman who has had an abortion, Jesus is forgiveness and love and peace. For the woman facing an unknown pregnancy and not sure what to do, Jesus is direction and hope and provision. For the couple desperately wanting a child and not able to conceive, Jesus is more than able to provide. For the parent who has lost a child and can’t imagine not choosing life, Jesus is comfort in the midst of the devastating grief. For the adopted child who could have been aborted, Jesus is the sustainer of life. For the biological mom who placed her child up for adoption, Jesus is the reassurance that she made the right decision. AND for the unborn child who was aborted, Jesus has been and always will be the author of their life. Jesus is everything to me and to us. At the end of the day, our fight is not against each other. Our fight is against the evil one and his evil ways. Oh that we would turn to Jesus and find Him to be our everything! As many women listen to Donna share her story, it is my prayer that Jesus will shine through. Jesus said, “the thief comes to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) May this podcast be a powerful reminder of God’s incredible love, grace, and redemption.

Steve's latest brilliant idea for the Beverly Beat is less about attracting readers and more about attracting gawkers, with "attracting" being the operative word: he wants to copy British tabloids by having cheesecake photos on Page 3 -- though at least he's not prepared for the Beat's models to be topless; bikinis will be just fine! To prepare for a publicity stunt announcing the initiative, he parks it in front of a sun lamp -- in the office, because why not -- which is when Janet notices an irregular mole on his shoulder. Facing the possibility that it could be melanoma leads Steve to re-evaluate his life and ponder what his legacy will be...for a while. Not long. When Donna finds the photo strip from "You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello," Gina leads her to believe that she and Noah did more that night than mug for the camera, and since Noah was wasted, he's not a credible witness in his own defense. Donna's anger leads her to accept David's request that she beard for him at his boss's party, where it turns out to be extremely easy for the two of them to fall back into their old relationshippy ways with not one but two for-real kisses. When she's not trying to pry Noah and Donna apart -- for sport, at this point -- Gina's trying to keep up with Dylan's need to bone in ever more scandalous locations. Matt having finally disclosed his marital status to her, Kelly's moping around, ruining everyone's Valentine's Day with her whining about whether she should fight for Matt against his mentally ill wife. Would it shock you to learn that Kelly is a bitch about it? We break down "Beheading St. Valentine" in our latest Again With This podcast!Reading this in a podcast app? The ability to push through obstacles is a defining quality in Donna Halper’s PhD journey.  She had a goal of being on the radio and a bunch of college boys in the 60s were not going to keep her from her dream. When Donna realized the radio industry was changing she decided a new path was to be followed and she could use her radio past to build her future. The ultimate goal would require some work though, a dissertation, something that would be a challenge for Donna almost 35 years removed from her undergrad. http://www.donnahalper.com    Twitter link @DevorahLeah

Donna Cravotta took her first solo trip when she was 5 years old. This adventure at such a young age sparked a huge desire and passion in Donna to travel the world, and she did! When Donna had her son, her priorities shifted and her solo travels came to a halt. Now that her son is slightly older, Donna can not wait till he’s off to college so she can begin a new stage of her life and travel the world on her own time once again.   Key Takeaways: *For Donna growing up, travel was what ‘other people’ did. *Donna’s best friend moved away and she was depressed, so her mother found enough money to send Donna, aged 5 at the time, on a plane (alone!) to go visit her friend. *Donna traveled all over for work in her adult life, but then she had a child and being a jetsetter just wasn’t possible. *Donna shares a cute story of her days working and traveling around the world. *Jennifer discusses how sometimes you just have to accommodate your travel buddy. *Donna had a lot of stress managing a bad relationship, working long hours, and a newborn child. One day Donna saw a deal to the Dominican Republic and just went! She spent her time reflecting, setting up boundaries, and realizing that she had to raise her child alone. *Donna explains what a ‘maintenance-free’ lifestyle is and how you can have one. *Donna is waiting for her son to go off to college. Once he does, you bet she’ll be back to solo traveling again. *Really be mindful as to what’s taking up your time. You don’t enjoy it? Delegate it or outsource it. *Remember, the only thing you can control in your life is your reaction. *Most of Donna’s travel experiences have been reactionary. However, when Donna begins to travel again in the next few years, she’s not going to make her trips reactionary. They’re going to be purposely planned. *What’s in store for Donna when she becomes an empty nester? *There’s a whole big world out there. Your adventures don’t always have to be planned to the ‘T.’ *Don’t be afraid to be a tourist in your own backyard. You will get to see things from a new perspective. *It’s not always about the destination. It’s the experience you have with yourself while you’re in that new destination that counts the most. It is such a profound feeling. *What is Donna’s business about?   Mentioned in This Episode: Transformviatravel.com Transform via Travel on Facebook @GoSoloLive on Twitter Email: Jennifer@TransformviaTravel.com Patreon.com/gosololive   Connect with Donna: Website: https://socialpivotpr.com/ LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/donnacravotta Twitter: @DonnaCravotta Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SocialPivotPR Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/donnacravotta/   Leave a Review: Did you like this episode?
