Depressing but true: we're hurtling toward human-caused climate collapse and our political-economic system, captured by capitalist elites intent on squeezing out profits until the day our civilization collapses, is effectively incapable of responding by itself. It must be forced: but how? Petitions haven't worked. Rallies haven't worked. Posting on Instagram hasn't worked. And ****ing up pipelines, sexy though it might be, hasn't worked. So while purists call for mass eco-insurgency and liberals circulate change.org petitions, the A22 Network has responded by organizing and mobilizing huge numbers of committed militants around the Western world, using large-scale civil disobedience as a tactic to push governments to adopt basic climate policies. These tactics have been controversial but successful: Just Stop Oil, the British branch of A22 perhaps best known for throwing soup at a Van Gogh, recently disbanded itself because its main demand — that the UK government cease approving any new oil and gas exploitation projects — has been adopted. In Episode 81 we chat with Laura Sullivan, a spokesperson for Last Generation Canada, which is the Canadian branch of the A22 Network. We talk about Last Generation's demands, the tactics used by the group, combating the freeze response often provoked by discussions of climate collapse, and preparing for revolutionary conditions as things inevitably deteriorate. So today's episode is ALL about a concept that might sound super depressing at first glance, but is actually one of the most powerful tools we have for emotional growth. I'm talking about encountering futility - yep, that word you probably haven't tossed around since your college philosophy class (if ever)! What Is Futility Anyway?

Career declines are inevitable and a bit of sadness always comes along with them. Hopefully, they end in a well enough way where their retirement feels just as much a celebration of their accomplishments as much as it is a goodbye. Robbie Lawler's retirement was about as good as it gets for example. But in these cases, man it really hits you hard to see what these fighters go through.
MONEY is and will always be a sensitive subject. Some say TELL US! IT INSPIRES US! Others say NO... it is DEPRESSING that I am not doing as well as you and others and it hurts me. I do not know if it was TABOO for you as a kid to discuss MONEY but in our house we were taught that it was a PRIVATE MATTER and no one's business... so that is why I do not splatter my earnings all over and WHO DETERMINES HOW MUCH MONEY MAKES YOU A SUCCESS? If it is based on the NAVA survey... $50,000 is a pretty successful VO and over $100,000 is REALLY doing well but fairly... there is no measure and we all want to MAKE ALL WE CAN! RIGHT?????

A few years ago, I was generously gifted a free ticket to a Tony Robbins “Unleash the Power Within” event. And it was a delightful experience. I went to the event a couple of years after discovering “The Spiritual Switch” (aka. The Psychological Switch) so during the event, I had a deep understanding of where my feelings truly come from – and of the fact that I don't actually need any “ninja” NLP mindset techniques to feel better.
Dazzle friends with the grammar smarts you'll get from our second chat with Bryan Garner, one of America's language gurus. Finally, you're about to learn if you can - or cannot - end a sentence with a preposition; if you can use "like" instead of "as"; and if you can banish "whom" and "whomever" from your brain. Just wait until you hear Bryan's rant about lawyers' terrible writing. Speaking of which, can you guess which common five-letter word (which lawyers love) causes endless legal battles?

This week: the death of British industry In the cover piece for the magazine, Matthew Lynn argues that Britain is in danger of entering a ‘zero-industrial society'. The country that gave the world the Industrial Revolution has presided over a steep decline in British manufacturing. He argues there are serious consequences: foreign ownership, poorer societies, a lack of innovation, and even national security concerns. Why has this happened? Who is to blame? And could Labour turn it around? Matthew joined the podcast, alongside the head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Paul Nowak. (1:05) Next: the Pope takes on President Trump The Pope has nominated Cardinal Robert McElroy to be the new Archbishop of Washington. Damian Thompson writes that on the face of it, this might sound like a routine appointment, but the reality is that this is retaliation against the Trump administration. for the nomination of an arch-MAGA loyalist, and uncompromising Catholic, as the new ambassador to the Holy See. Subsequently, the Vatican has appointed an outspoken liberal. What does this tell us about the power of both the Papacy and the President? And how much sway does the Catholic hierarchy really have in Trump's America? Damian joined us to reveal more, alongside our deputy editor Freddy Gray, who has been in D.C. for Trump's inauguration. (19:02) And finally: what are sex parties really like? Far from being a sexy affair, sex parties are depressing, with most attendees leaving unfulfilled and rather disappointed, writes James Innes-Smith. He says that he spent more time in the kitchen at a recent party than in the bedroom. So, what makes them appealing in the first place? Are people looking for connection in all the wrong places? James joined the podcast alongside Sophia Money-Coutts, who has written about the subject for Tatler magazine. (30:35) Hosted by Lara Prendergast and William Moore. Produced by Patrick Gibbons and Oscar Edmondson.

The Cincinnati Bearcats suffered a tough loss at home, falling to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 81-71. This defeat puts Cincinnati on the outside looking in when it comes to NCAA Tournament bubble discussions as we enter the late portions of January. Despite shooting 51% from the floor, the Bearcats were outmatched on the glass, with Texas Tech dominating the offensive rebounds 10-3. This disparity in second-chance opportunities proved to be a crucial factor in the game's outcome. The loss is particularly frustrating given that Cincinnati was touted as a strong rebounding team coming into the season. However, they were thoroughly outplayed in that aspect of the game in their own gymnasium. Offensive Struggles and Defensive Lapses While the Bearcats' offense showed flashes of brilliance, their defensive identity seemed to vanish. Texas Tech shot an impressive 12-31 from beyond the arc, exposing Cincinnati's perimeter defense. This is especially concerning given that the Bearcats entered the game ranked second in the nation in three-point defense. The first half saw Texas Tech put up 42 points, with Cincinnati struggling to contain their hot shooting. Despite this, the Bearcats managed to keep the game close, trailing by only four at halftime. However, the second half saw Texas Tech continue their sharp shooting, pulling away as Cincinnati's offense cooled off. The inability to string together stops and capitalize on offensive opportunities ultimately doomed the Bearcats. Looking Ahead This loss puts Cincinnati in a precarious position, with their NCAA Tournament hopes hanging in the balance. The team now faces a crucial stretch of games, including road contests against BYU and Utah, which have suddenly become must-win situations. The Bearcats will need to regroup quickly and address their defensive issues if they hope to turn their season around. With limited opportunities for quality wins remaining on the schedule, every game becomes increasingly important. For more insights and a deeper dive into the Bearcats' performance against Texas Tech, tune into the Chatterbox Bearcats podcast for this and much more. It's Blue Monday—the so-called “most depressing day of the year.” So I want to share a philosopher's perspective on despair. Nietzsche knew a thing or two about enduring hardship. Nietzsche reminds us that even in despair, we always have the choice to interpret our lives as we see fit. Listen to the episode to get the juicy details
- It's Blue Monday!
If you're feeling a little down in the dumps this cold January morning, you may not be alone because today is Blue Monday. Sarah Madden reports on it's myth and meaning.
On a cold rush hour morning, a good looking man, dressed in jeans and a baseball cap walked into a train station, carrying a violin case. He opened the case, dropped a few dollars in to encourage others to do the same. Over the next 45 minutes, he earned less than $35 for his performance. Most people simply walked by, barely stopping to listen to the classical violin piece, played flawlessly by the young man. Who was he? Joshua Bell, one of the world's most renowned musicians. As part of a social experiment, arranged by a writer from the Washington Post, he played for 45 minutes to see what would happen. The results are depressing. More than 1,000 people walked by missing a chance to hear this amazing musician perform. Depressing not just because they missed a once in a life time chance to hear Joshua Bell, but because their behavior is very typical of how we live our lives. We get so focused on the end game; we miss so much along the way. So the lesson for today, is not strictly business. Take a few minutes to listen to the music, explore something new, you and your business will be better for it.
