Resilience isn't something kids are just born with—it's built through challenges, support, and the belief that they can overcome setbacks. Encouraging them to take risks, learn from failure, and trust their own abilities lays the foundation for confidence and perseverance. But no one thrives alone, and a strong community provides the safety net that allows young people to push boundaries without fear of being abandoned when they stumble. When surrounded by mentors, peers, and role models who uplift rather than discourage, those who dare to defy expectations have the strength to keep going, no matter the obstacles.Greg Anderson, a former police officer and special operations veteran, has built a successful career as an entrepreneur and jiu-jitsu coach. After leaving law enforcement over his stand against unjust mandates, he founded Electric North Jiu-Jitsu in Lake Stevens, Washington. Today, Greg speaks about the challenges of maintaining moral courage, the role of mentorship and community in shaping future leaders, and the power of standing by your principles, even when it comes with professional and financial risks. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond!Quotes: “If you put something out there, or you wrote something, or you posted something that was untrue, the universe is gonna work that out. I don't need to interject myself into that. I'm doing my thing and trying to stay outside of drama.” – Greg Anderson“If you're not willing to get back in the fight, that means out there on the streets, if you quit because you're sad, that's where you die.” – Greg Anderson“Courage is contagious, and the more people that show courage, the bigger that foundation gets.” – Greg AndersonTakeaways:Be willing to stand up for your principles, even when it's difficult. Don't let fear of the unknown or financial consequences hold you back.Develop capabilities outside of your primary profession to ensure you have options and flexibility in the future.Mentor young men and teach them to be resilient, problem-solvers, and unafraid to confront challenges.Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who will support and empower you to be your best self.Use your platform, whether it's social media or in-person, to share your authentic voice and inspire others to do the same. Conclusion:Real progress comes with resistance, and true change requires tough choices. Standing by your beliefs, even when it's hard, is what creates lasting impact. Growth isn't just about success—it's about staying true to your values, even in uncertainty. Taking a stand shapes character and lays the foundation for a stronger, more principled future.

On Nov 26, 2016, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, 18-year-old high school student Ben Keita was reported missing by his parents, Ibrahima and Aissata Keita. He apparently left his home in Lake Stevens, Washington State by himself, without his wallet, phone or car. Temperatures around that time were freezing, and his family was worried the cold could trigger problems for Ben's sickle cell anemia. Because Ben left his cell phone behind, the police were not able to get a precise location to begin their search, so they began by looking through a wide sweeping wooded area around the Keita home.  Experienced searchers, including a dog trained to detect human remains, were deployed. The search for Ben stretched on for days, and then to weeks. Six weeks passed with no sign of Ben. Then, on January 9, 2017, a group of teenagers wandering into the woods stumbled across an awful sight. About 12 to 14 feet from a trail, and about 10 feet from the nearest backyard fence was the body of Ben Keita. He was hanging from a rope strung over a tall branch in a densely wooded area just blocks from his home. Disturbingly, his body was found in an area that was previously searched multiple times in the days after his initial disappearance. One end of the rope was fashioned into a noose around Ben's neck; The other end was attached to a branch that was estimated to be 50 feet in the air. Ben's feet were 2 and a half feet off the ground. Incredibly his neck was not broken. His official cause of death was recorded as asphyxiation. Despite the odd circumstances, based on the fact there were no other evidence of trauma, the Snohomish County Medical Examiner determined the manner of death to be suicide. But Ben's parents immediately objected to this finding. His family said there was no reason to suspect anything was bothering Ben to the point that he would take his life. Ben was a young black man being raised in the Muslim faith. To Ben's family, Ben's cause of death was nothing short of a lynching. What happened to Ben Keita?   Sources: Victim Connect Resource Center. (2024, October 29). Jen Huffman gave her son a guilt trip about learning to row. “You would make your great grandpa so happy!” And when your great grandpa is Joe Rantz, 7 seat in the University of Washington crew that took gold at the 1936 Olympics, you learn to row. Jen also took up the challenge and learned to row as an adult, quickly becoming an accomplished masters rower in the Seattle area. Growing up, Jen didn't know much about her Grandpa Joe's rowing history. But late in his life, she found his memorabilia from the crew's trip to the Berlin Olympics. Jen tells us how a scrapbook she made became the jumping off point for author Daniel James Brown's now blockbuster book The Boys in the Boat. Ten years after the book was published, it's become a George Clooney-directed movie. We talk with Jen about the power of rowing and seeing her grandpa brought to life on the big screen. . "The first year is the worst. The kids will want everything that's not you, and that's OK. They don't want to know what you know until they know that you care about them, so you just wear them down with kindness and that sense of wonder about music. That's my trick. I try and find what they wonder about music and then find ways to hook that into the materials I'm choosing.”Monika Tabor serves as Director of Choirs for Lake Stevens High School and as advisor for LSHS Associate Student Body government.  She has a love for vocal jazz that was instilled in her by her junior high school and high school music teachers in Marysville and Lake Stevens. Teaching in public schools since 2004, she has taught vocal jazz, choral music, musical theater, general music/music history, as well as stagecraft and sound design. Her music direction credits include Godspell and Mamma Mia! wiith LSHS Drama, as well as You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, The Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, Pippin, and White Christmas with Prairie High School in Vancouver, WA.  Tabor earned her B.A. in Music from the University of Washington and her teacher certification was earned from Western Washington University.
