HUNTING THE COMEBACK TRAIL: REVISED by Bill Padilla Roy's lack of depth perception caused him to stumble several times while negotiating deadfalls....When Roy twisted his ankle on one of those logjams, he thought it safer to stay along the road. Roy's patience had grown as would that of any man who's survived serious injury. He waited and when shadows started to get long that evening, he spotted his first bear.... Hunting the Comeback Trail is an inspiring historical documentary on a group of disabled and health-conflicted hunters - Jim, Roy, Pat, Jerry, Ken, and Bill (author William Padilla) - who, since being impaired in the seventies and early eighties, transcended adversity to stay active in their favorite sport. Padilla succeeds in recreating the drama, excitement, and triumph of these men as they are on the hunt. As he explains the adjustments and accommodations made for these hunters, readers realize the determination of these men who refused to let disability interfere with their passion. Padilla describes hunting as a ''release from the limited world these men have adjusted to'' and urges other disabled persons to keep spirited and stay active. He concludes by listing organizations across the country that aid disabled hunters. Through his own experience with disability, avid hunter Bill Padilla recognized the rehabilitating effect hunting can have on an individual. With this in mind, he chose to write Hunting the Comeback Trail to reveal his inspiring stories and those of five other men suffering from health problems who have all experienced the healing effect of hunting. Padilla is a Wyoming native who is retired and living in his hometown of Cheyenne. He has been a member of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep, Safari Club International, Disabled American Veterans, and Ducks Unlimited. Padilla has two children, Antonio and Teresa. https://www.amazon.com/Hunting-Comeback-Trail-Bill-Padilla/dp/0805977775/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=HUNTING+THE+COMEBACK+TRAIL+by+Bill+Padilla&qid=1595343805&s=books&sr=1-1 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/bipadilla.mp3

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the podcast. Today, we’re welcoming back Ryan L. Terry to the podcast, with a review for a historical crime thriller involving a surprising number of Nazis. He’ll give you the lowdown in a minute, but for a few other reviews from Ryan, check out his review for the cult classic OFFICE KILLER (Episode #512), KNIFE + HEART (Episode #542), and his assistance for my journey during Reign of Terror 2019 with his guest review of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (Episode #614). His promo will run before the review! Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// THE GOOD LIAR (2019), written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Bill Condon, is a sultry cat and mouse thriller starring two of Britain’s finest actors: Hellen Mirren as the widowed Betty McLeish and Sir Ian McKellen as the career con artist Roy Courtney. You don’t want to miss watching these two actors go at it in the most brilliantly entertaining fashion. When Roy happens upon the online dating profile of Betty, he cannot believe his luck when he finds out that she is wealthy. Usually, Roy has no issues in swindling people, but he begins to dance a fine line between his personal feelings and the objective of his job when he begins to fall in love with Betty. As their relationship develops from platonic to something more, the complications and conflict give way to a treacherous game of wits. Cat and mouse games, whodunits, and other intellectually-driven thrillers are often some of the most difficult movies to review, because so many details could easily be spoilers. There is perhaps no greater recent example of this tightrope I find myself walking than with this clever film. Virtually everything about it from title to end credits could give way to spoiling the many surprises if not approached with the utmost care. As much as will try to avoid any spoiler-ific information, it is unavoidable with this film. So, if you are worried — pause — then go watch the movie. Yes, it’s a recommended watch if you are into intellectually driven cat and mouse thrillers. Then come back to this episode to listen to my thoughts. That being said, let’s move into my reactions! Don’t look to Condon’s more well-known and recent work on such films as BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, or DREAMGIRLS to get a feel for his approach to this crime thriller. You need to look to his earlier work MURDER 101, DEADLY RELATIONS (sounds like a Lifetime movie or Investigation Discovery series), or THE MAN WHO WOULDN’T DIE (which sounds an awful lot like a Hitchcock title). Looking to his more obscure films will reveal how he approached and directed THE GOOD LIAR. If you love a film with twists and turns at every corner, then you will undoubtedly love this movie. Early on, the audience realizes that nothing is at it seems, so that creates a fantastic atmosphere of intrigue that invites you to play along as you try to figure out what is really going on. Although on a conceptual level, you may figure out what is going on, the details will most assuredly escape you. And it’s those loose ends that will drive you crazy — in the best way possible. Until the big reveal at the end, in which is all makes sense. The best thing about this movie is that the plot is incredibly believable. You’ll want to poke holes in plot, but you’ll have a tough time identifying a solid one. That is partly due to the magic of screenwriting: the characters will say or do something because it’s required at that specific time; however, it is played off as natural and unforced. I admire the tonal shifts from the lighthearted beginning to the rather dark material midway through and the increasingly macabre subject matter as the movie makes its way towards the climax. This movie will take you places that will completely blow your mind; however, I assure you that it works very well despite being reprehensible in nature. No plot device is ever used simply for shock value; everything has an intentional purpose and place. If for no other reason, you want to watch this movie for the two lead performances by Mirren and McKellen. Not that these performances are even in their top 10, but these actors are so much fun to watch, that you forgive the movie of its shortcomings. Rotten Tomatoes: 64% Metacritic: 55 IMDb: 6.5 One Movie Punch: 6.0/10 You can find THE GOOD LIAR (2019) at a cinema near you!

The competitive imperative of change In a fast-changing world, how are jobs changing? Who will be impacted by new technology? And how fast will it all change? In this episode, Ron and Roy explore the impact technologies like artificial intelligence, automation, and platforms will have on the people within supply chains today. The rate of change is getting faster and faster. When Roy was at Raytheon in the 80s they implemented electronic data interchange, all of a sudden that technology eliminated lots of transactional activity, which freed up work for many employees. But unfortunately, there wasn’t any additional work to allow those people to find new positions. Roy says, “it opened up my eyes that whenever you put in a new technology that is going to disrupt the process flow and eliminate transactional work, you also have to have in place a training program to be able to give people the opportunity to expand their activities and skill-sets for the new workload going forward.” What he learned is the concept of a transitional “soft landing.” Giving affected employees advance notice, explaining how the new technology will do a significant portion of the job they're doing today, and help them see the vision of the new organization—and what the new skills they need are. **The responsibility of re-training—does it belong with the company or the individual? ** Ron argues that both individuals and the company have a role in preparing for change. Individuals need to understand that the roles that are going to be available to them in the future are going to require a completely different skill set than they have. And in the case of the individual’s responsibility, he says that the “individual has to take the impetus to increasingly train and learn new skill-sets.” Ron explains that companies need to realize that they have to continually train their workers to be able to get to that new level. That they need to realize that it’s easier “to keep a worker and train them than to find a new worker.” And no matter what, it’s in your best interest to take advantage of all the training available to you so that when new responsibilities show up, you're there with the right skills. There are companies out there now taking these concepts to a new level. It starts with utilizing this new vast stream of data provided by new technologies. As you streamline the supply chain and eliminate stockpiles of wasted material, you can start to drive more value. Some companies are incorporating reducing their carbon footprint into their RFP in terms of driving innovative new ideas in their manufacturing process, their delivery process, their bills of material, and their indirect costs so that there's less carbon and more efficiencies. The problems and the opportunities are immense, but through new technology that lets companies understand how data can deliver results in the supply chain, Roy sees us “being able to make a significant difference in all of our world’s problems by thinking about this as holistic supply chain change management.” Competitive imperative: training for the future The need for being creative and innovative goes all the way through elementary school, high school and beyond. Ron argues that we need to nurture minds that are open to new ideas. And then that will drive a supply chain filled with new ideas. A connected supply chain will dramatically change how we as humans work within the supply chain. The world is changing quickly and so are the skill sets required to thrive. Ron says “it's a competitive imperative for organizations to understand the implications that technology has” in their business and supply chain. And it's not just about making your supply chain better, it’s not just about improving for the sake of the supply chain—but improving it because it really is the bellwether for whether your organization runs well. Roy reminds us that everyone from the individual to the employee—the manager, the HR rep, the visionaries in the company—everyone must realize that they're going to need well-trained, skillful staff able to deliver on changing requirements. The entire organization has to see that as an imperative to make it work.

What we cover: The one thing we all have in common is that no one is immune. We will all go through periods of adversity. That fact is the great equalizer. What sets us apart however, is how we choose to handle the adversity.   Today’s episode might just be one of the most important conversations I’ve had. Not just in terms of this podcast, but in the bigger picture as well. We all have a choice – every day – to be the kind of person who squeezes the juice out of the gift of life that we have all been given. Or we can be a moaner and a groaner and a grumbler and a victim. Roy McBeth is joyful and happy, and he spreads optimism. He isn’t a complainer. And yet, for many years he was growing increasingly ill on account of kidney disease. He saw members of his family succumb to the same disease, and rather than use the possibility of this eventual fate as a crutch, the reason for him to opt out of life and be miserable, he chose to use it as the opposite. It catapulted him forwarded. He is an elite cyclist and an unbelievable triathlete. He’s also a detective with the Domestic Crimes Unit with a police force in the Vancouver area, about an hour outside this city, in Abbotsford. And he talks to us about he maintains perspective in a job that is obviously heartbreaking at times. And, of course, after being the recipient of a healthy new kidney, a gift that altered the trajectory of his future, today he’s avid organ donor advocate. This is not the episode for people who may be suffering from kidney disease. Or who may be in need of a donor. Or who may be thinking about becoming a donor. This, quite simply, is the episode for every one. Literally, the demographic of today’s episode is absolutely anyone on the planet. Because, as I said, we are all going to go through hard times. And we would all do well to heed Roy’s life philosophy. To suck the marrow out of each day. When Roy was so so so sick, he was the living embodiment of what is possible even in our darkest days. He took off to Asia, with only 16% kidney function, and qualified for the XTERRA off-road triathlon World Championships in Maui. Today, on the other side of a successful transplant, he is the living embodiment of living big – of making each day count when you’ve been given another chance. Which is something we’re all given. Each morning when we wake up, we’re given another chance. Roy’s is a story that exemplifies the best of humanity. It showcases just how important the living donor program is, and what kind of person actually steps up to save someone’s life. We hear all about Kevin, the hero of this story; the colleague who changed Roy’s life when he basically said: “Here, you can take one of mine. I don’t need two of them.” On January 14th, we say Happy kidney-versary, to Roy and Kevin. And at the same time, I will say a Happy 1-year kidney-versary to my mom, Sheila, and to my mother-in-law, Jane, who share a similar story to Roy and Kevin, when my mom donated a kidney to Jane last November 30th. See? I am surrounded by greatness. There’s a lot of sniffling in this episode. While I do live with two toddlers who’ve had colds for the better part of the last couple months, the sniffling is because often I just couldn’t hold back the tears. Despite the beauty and emotion in this episode, the part I just adore above and beyond the obvious, is an added plus. For anyone out there -- we’re at the start of a brand new year -- who might have a goal they want to achieve but who feels it’s bigger than they are, Roy walks us through what it was like to be someone who couldn’t swim one length of a 25-metre pool and then go on to clock a kooky fast 1 hour 6 ironman swim just 11 months later. He walks us through the psychology of that transformation. The net take-away? We are all capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit for. Wherever you are listening from -- today we have people joining in from nearly 50 countries – please let your family know your intentions to be an organ donor. Sign the back of your drivers license. Or, take that act of heroism a step further and pop into your local hospital to learn more about how you can become a living donor. Like Kevin. And like my mom, Sheila. Unrelated, but every bit as important, Roy and I talk about his role in Domestic Crimes. If you are experiencing an unhealthy relationship, and a growing sense of isolation, please reach out to someone as soon as you can. Do not suffer in silence. Keep in touch with me at MJDionne.com.
