I started running for fitness at university and evolved into triathlon and all things swim bike run. I enjoyed pushing my limits and seeing what I was capable of. I have competed in various World Triathlon events for NZ, including two Cross Triathlons, Duathlon, Aquathlons and Sprint Triathlon. I have also raced several XTERRA events, and love trying out all sorts of multisport including swim run and gravel - I recently did the TransCape swimrun in Dunsborough. I also enjoy bikepacking and have ridden some epic trips in NZ. I've also enjoyed a couple of epic camps in NZ run by John Newsom from the IM Talk podcast. In NZ I ended up with a group of friends who loved doing endurance adventures! This winter I'm training for the Larapinta trail run in August in Alice Springs and the Gravel Muster the weekend after. This will be an awesome training camp 2 months out for World Champs in Wollongong in October where I'm representing NZ in the sprint. I am associated with the Fremantle Triathlon Club in Western Australia and have previously been a member of Wellington Triathlon Club, Tauranga Triathlon Club in NZ and the Thames Valley Triathletes in the UK which is where it all started for me!
Rob and Caitlin drove the Xterra north to New York for a wedding over the Labor Day weekend. This was a destination wedding that happened to be on one of the most famous trout streams in the world. Rob has read about this fishery since childhood. This is his first time visiting the Hancock area and fishing the Upper Delaware River. This section of the river is a tailwater and begins a few miles above the resort in the town of Deposit. The water flows cool, clear, and constant throughout the year. Emerald green and slow, the water speed is controlled by the dam release upstream. The West Branch Angler and Resort were excellent hosts. The food, hospitality, and fire pit are unmatched. Rob plans on casting dries to rising fish, stripping streamers for big bad browns, and wiggle mice patterns across the riffles at dusk. Listen as Rob explores the river and its surroundings. He sneaks out of the wedding reception to fish. Be sure to contact Josh for casting lessons. Produced by Jason Reif Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Odd Tandem Cycling Podcast with Bobby Julich and Jens Voigt
Jamie Whitmore was dominant in her Xterra, offroad triathlon's elite series. She won 37 races, 6 national titles and a world championship on her way to a position in the sport's hall of fame. After a pain in her leg wouldn't cease, she sought treatment, where doctors discovered spindle cell sarcoma, a form of cancer that attacked her sciatic nerve. She was lucky to survive cancer and complications from surgery. But the battle had left her with extremely limited mobility in one leg and drop foot. Jamie turned her hand at cycling and became an 11 time world champion, and a paralympic champion. She spoke to Bobby and Jens about her journey through sport, her battle against cancer, and what the changes she wants the UCI to implement in paracycling.Join our Patreon now to get an ad free version of the podcast and your name in the titles patreon.com/OddTandemCheck out the video version on our youtube channel and find us on social media by searching @OddTandem on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook

Raised in Blackburn, UK on a diet of motocross and modern pentathlon, he moved to Taupo in his youth, found triathlon and set about becoming one of the best in the world. He is often first off the bike with blistering swim and bike splits, and this year he's been backing that up with solid run performances. C.J. is passionate about fitness as a lifestyle, and believes that every athlete's personal journey toward their goals should enrich their lives. His experience has given him a unique understanding of how to balance the stresses of everyday life, family, career, and extracurricular commitments, with progress, health, happiness, and achievement of one's goals. While he believes that the general path toward an endurance lifestyle is similar for everyone, he also believes each individual's journey is highly specific. Through open communication, trust, and a cooperative relationship, he relies on a strategy of prescribing the most effective training at the right time for each athlete to reach their goals, while not having to sacrifice the other loves in their life. While the 70.3 and Ironman distance hold a special place in his heart, he also races and has unique experience in events including Xterra, mountain bike endurance racing, mountain bike stage racing, running events of all distances, and many others. He has been fortunate to have the opportunity to help guide athletes of all levels (first timers, professionals, collegiate athletes, collegiate champions, and world championship qualifiers) to achieve their goals. He believes that fitness helps us to be happier, healthier, and enriches our lives. C.J. looks forward to the opportunity to chat with you about your personal journey.

In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm going to run you through the basics of solar power and it's uses for overlanding. I see people asking lots of questions in overlanding and camping groups and forums, so while I'm no electrician, I've been using solar for the last 4 or 5 years and I've learned a lot. I was in the same place as a lot of us 5 years ago where solar seemed really intimidating and scary, but once I got into it, it's really pretty straightforward and there are so many valuable uses that it's a powerful tool for your overlanding build. As I mention in the video, here are a couple of helpful links to related articles that may help if you're getting started in solar. Mono vs. Poly: Solar Cells Comparison: https://sunvivalguide.com/amorphous-vs-monocrystalline-vs-polycrystalline-solar-panel/ Solar calculator: https://mowgli-adventures.com/rv-solar-calculator/ And here are some of the solar products I've used over the years that I liked: The first 100W Renogy Solar panel with controller that I ran on my Xterra ($130 and includes panel, controller, and cords): https://amzn.to/42YED7p Odyssey AGM Starter battery (ran this in both my Xterra and again in my Frontier-if you're not in a Nissan truck, verify the battery size for your application): https://amzn.to/3SYXnyP I built a portable power bank on the cheap using this battery (100AH LifePo4): https://amzn.to/3T0a9gC And I put that battery in a pre-made battery box for tons of capacity for around $300 total: https://amzn.to/3Ifwpyj If you have a solar panel, but want a decent budget controller to allow you to hook it up to a battery, this one is great and it's $18: https://amzn.to/3P0oQzh Or, if you want a better MPPT controller, this one is under $70 and has bluetooth connectivity and a phone app: https://amzn.to/3TdyZuK Here's that Allpowers power bank and it comes with a 200 watt flexible panel (I'm going to mount mine to the top of my RTT for about $500 total including the power bank and the solar panel): https://amzn.to/49Tkfqi

From her upbringing in New Zealand to her career as a multi-sport athlete, Jenny Smith has proven that you can achieve athletic excellence while balancing changes in identity. Jenny's journey through motherhood and endurance sports hits close to home for me, and I was thrilled to reconnect after our time with the Breck Epic Women's Cycling Summit this summer. In this conversation, we explore Jenny's evolution from a young runner to a dominant force in cross-country mountain biking and XTERRA triathlon. She shares how she balances the demands of training and competition with the joys of motherhood. Plus, hear about her philosophy on coaching athletes - emphasizing skill development, positive youth development, and cultivating a supportive training environment - and her experiences and thoughts on aging as an athlete. Jenny gives us the potent reminder to invest in personal growth, authenticity, and staying true to one's roots amidst the demands of elite sports. Here are a few key takeaways: - The Past Informs the Present: Jenny's upbringing in New Zealand and background in running - Navigating Career Transitions: Hear about her transition to mountain biking and racing career accomplishments - Motherhood on Two Wheels: The impact of having a child on her training and racing - Aim High Performance: Her philosophy and approach to coaching athletes, especially adolescents - Changing Identity: Jenny shares her views on aging as an athlete and cultural identity LINKS: - Learn more about Jenny's coaching and Aim High Performance - Check out other episodes about parenthood and athletics - Listen to another powerful interview about balancing motherhood and the podium with Olympian Erin Huck
In today's episode of the podcast, I wanted to make something that's hopefully interesting for everyone, but especially my Nissan folks. Nissan applied for some patents in early January of 2024 for a passthrough from a truck cab into the truck bed as well as essentially a bed rack with removable top, sides, and rear panels. I originally saw the article on this website if you want to check out the whole thing: https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2024/01/soft-top-with-a-pass-through-next-gen-nissan-frontier-patent-is-wild/ So, in today's episode, I'm going to talk about how Nissan has always been weird and quirky and come up with some pretty cool, unique ideas. I'll also talk about the patents themselves and show them to you and describe them for those listening to the podcast. Finally, I'll finish up with my thoughts on what these could actually mean and whether I think it's a good idea or not. Jay discovered CrossFit in 2009. As a former competitive triathlete and a private running and triathlon coach, Jay quickly saw how effective CrossFit workouts would be, both in the gym and on improving performance in any sport. After experiencing the benefits first hand, he incorporated private CrossFit training into his athletes programming. In late 2011 he became an assistant coach at CrossFit Virtuosity while continuing to work at New York Sports Med and Physical Therapy as a PT Aide. Jay competed in Club Water Polo for FSU. In 2002 he took on the sport of triathlon, focusing on the XTERRA off-road circuit and was sponsored to race all over the US, Japan and Europe for the 2005-06 seasons. Jay has achieved the distinction of CrossFit Level 3 Certified trainer. He is one of only six in the New York area.
