P1 torsdag 23 oktober och OBS! 3/11 kl 18.15 Det är snart 20 år sedan den österrikiske författaren Thomas Bernhard lämnade jordelivet med sitt famösa testamente som förbjöd publicering och uppsättningar av hans verk inom Österrikes gränser. Ändå har han förblivit en av de mest lästa, omstridda och uppskattade författarna inom det tyska språkområdet. Förbudet att spela honom har dessutom på senare tid lättats upp via hans halvsyskon.Överdrifternas, upprepningarnas och de kritiska tiradernas mästare gjorde ständiga utfall mot det han ogillade inom den österrikiska nationen, och landet var inte sent att reagera. ”Allt är skrattretande jämfört med döden” var hans kommentar när han mottog ett litterärt pris 1968, vilket orsakade en av alla de skandaler som byggde upp hans rykte. Den till svenska nyss översatta romanen ”Skogshuggning” (1984), fick inte publiceras på flera år på grund av att en tidigare vän beskyllde honom för förtal. Många av hans pjäser, framför allt Heldenplatz (1988), kritiserades av konservativa kretsar som hävdade att de smutsade ner Österrikes rykte.I Sverige har vi mest hört om Thomas Bernhard, men hur lät han själv? Han uppträdde då och då som skådespelare i sina pjäser, läste in flera av sina texter och lät sig intervjuas av radio och tv. Karsten Thurfjell har plockat fram några inspelningar och talat med ett par Bernhardianer: Radioteaterns Magnus Lindman som översatt och satt upp flera Bernhardpjäser, och österrikaren Willi Klinger, som lärde känna Thomas Bernhard under hans sista år.
