Photography is an art. And if you think about it, film and television, is a series of shots in movement.  I was honored to chat with Dan Winters, a legend in the world of  professional photography who crafts narratives with the click of his shutter.Winters has photographed public figures ranging from the Dalai Lama to President Barack Obama, Hollywood celebrities from Leonardo DiCaprio to Helen Mirren, and artistic luminaries from Jeff Koons to William Christenberry. In our heartfelt conversation, Dan imparts his artistic philosophy, detailing the intricacies of incorporating objects into his portraits to tell richer stories. He takes us behind the scenes of his meticulously planned shoots, including the awe-inspiring NASA launches, and reflects on his personal connections to his subjects, from shipyards to the vast expanse of space. In the new Nat Geo Series "Photographer"  Dan Winters episode, “Life is Once. Forever.,” has premiered  at South by Southwest on March 11 and is available to stream on Disney Plus and Hulu.Because I love getting to the "heart" of  the arts, Dan opens up about the peaks and valleys of his journey with bipolar disorder. He talks candidly about the choice to remain anchored in the present, the pursuit of stability, and the indispensable role of his support network. Our exchange is not just about the images captured but the life lived behind the camera—a tale of art, ambition, and the courage to face one's own vulnerabilities. All about Dan's workhttps://danwintersphoto.com/BIOGRAPHYSee the trailerhttps://youtu.be/KSCjIRdu1ZY?si=eICoO5zkKCmVf3WwAbout your Host- Alexia MelocchiBuy My Book - An Insiders Secret: Mastering the Hollywood PathAlexia Melocchi - WebsiteThe Heart of Show Business - WebsiteLittle Studio Films - WebsiteShop Our Merchandise!TwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInThanks for listening! Andrew Feiler's visually compelling narrative documents the generational impact of a unique challenge grant program. Created by Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington, it served to educate Black children denied access to public schools. Through extensive research and diligent outreach Feiler weaves the irrevocably impacted life stories, with the historical and political benchmarks of desegregation. The threads reach to current historical figures such as the revered late Congressman, John Robert Lewis, a Rosenwald school alum, who wrote the book foreword, to luminaries such as Gordon Parks, Maya Angelou and James Baldwin, Rosenwald Fellowship recipients. In this book group, Andrew Feiler discusses, among other things:The concept awareness of creative choices to layer the intention of your visual narrativeThe power of education to change historyArt and activismThe role of the portrait as foreseen by Fredrick DouglassThe impact and intersection of civic involvement, economics, and politicsThe austere beauty of WIlliam Christenberry and the agency of the land to tell its own storyWhen in Arkansas be sure to visit Toadsuck and TurkeyscratchReferenced in the episodeFor autographed/personalized books“Rosenwald”, a film by Aviva KempnerIsabel Wilkerson - The Warmth of Other SunsNYTImes - Boston First Black Mayor - in 91 years! Russell & Robert meet leading documentary and fashion photographer Jamie Hawkesworth. We discuss Milton Avery, forensic photography, the power of natural light, a dedication to analogue cameras, taking Kate Moss’ portrait in India and documenting landscapes of Antarctica. We learn about Jamie’s early project 'Preston Bus Station' and explore his later collaborations with JW Anderson for Loewe and exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield and Huis Marseille, Amsterdam; the latter showing a mix of his personal as well as his commercial photography. Jamie reveals his admiration for photographers William Christenberry, Jem Southam & William Eggleston and for land artist Michael Heizer - who invited Jamie to take his portrait in the Nevada desert at Heizer’s mythical, monumental, as-yet-unseen 'City' (an ongoing land artwork that began in 1972 and will finally be publicly opened in 2020). This week, we discuss the possibilities of stepping outside our comfort zones. Sometimes, the beginning of a project seems too far out of reach — maybe even more than we can handle — but we find that the sweet spot in the Venn diagram between challenge and uncertainty is exactly what we need to take the work somewhere it couldn't have gotten to any other way. Also, where have all the Renaissance men gone? William Christenberry is our Photographer of the Week.

You need film stock for your 1947 Brownie Target Six-20 camera? Film for Classics has it. Found an undeveloped roll of film while cleaning out your grandfather’s junk drawer? Send it to the Rescued Film Project. On today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we examine two aspects of the film photography world that are alive and well. First, we speak with Levi Bettwieser of the Rescued Film Project about his self-assigned mission to collect, process, and preserve as many orphaned rolls of film as he can. He tells us about how his project got started, how he sustains it, his motivation, goals, and the future potential for such an impressive, yet motley archive. Bettwieser inspires us with his zeal, and speaks of the thrill (and the responsibility) he feels knowing that he is the first person to ever see the images contained on these rolls, some shot more than 70 years ago. For the Rescued Film Project’s wish-list, please see link below. After a pause, we speak with Dick Havilland, who is a film re-spooler and operates his business out of an old paper mill near Rochester, New York. Havilland cuts and packages sheet film into sizes that fit formats long ago abandoned by the majority of manufacturers and photographers. He tells us how this passion project became a business, how he acquires his raw material and creates these rolls, and about a few of his clients, including the artist and photographer William Christenberry. This is Southern Monument XI, made in 1983. And it is a cube form with a sphere in the top and it is surrounded by a field of real Alabama red soil. It is an attempt on my part to evoke a feeling of a monument, albeit somewhat abstract, that one might find in the landscape.
