This is Pod of Doom, a podcast dedicated to the British band Black Sabbath! The hosts of Every Pod You Cast return to discuss all things Sabbath: Justin Mancini of TheCineMaverick.com & Cinema Joes, Chris Mancini, and Randy Allain of Media/Lit will be covering the Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio eras of the metal pioneers. In the eighth official episode of the season, Chris, Justin, and Randy talk about the band's last album with Ozzy (for a while, anyway). They diss Kiss the way Kiss dissed Sabbath, recall PTSD flashbacks of Lucasfilm's Strange Magic, and indulge Randy as he names the artists he'd love to see do a cover version of this Sabbath album. And of course, they recommend other artists they've been enjoying for your listening pleasure. In this episode, the wind is a bit out of the sails of the boys and all NSC fans after the recent home loss to Cincy. But the boys take heart that they were just unfairly robbed, and maybe there are some lessons to be learned from Caesar's burning of the Library of Alexandria in 56 A.D. The boys show some love for professional soccer player Josh Bauer while expressing some disappointment for modern interpretation of soccer rules. They also have some hot takes about who should be taking penalty kicks and who should be defending them. They get to share one more favorite thing - an important Gen-X novelist, and when it comes to the Goonies, we are all Chunk. Finally, they gaze in their crystal balls to make predictions for the upcoming game in Charlotte, and they encourage listeners to send in their own hot chicken takes. And they drink beer.

After 50 years, it's great to see PENTAGRAM finally getting the attention they deserve from all across the world wide web. LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE, the band's latest offering and their first album in nearly a decade, arrived on the scene mere weeks before a video surfaced that went viral, showing founding member and frontman Bobby Liebling (wide-eyed and seemingly possessed) powering through “The Ghoul” with the rest of the band on stage and instantly becoming a viral sensation across metal circles and the greater metropolitan global meme universe. LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE truly measures up to the meaning of the phrase, with PENTAGRAM doing the impossible and finally breaking through to a worldwide audience. With their trademark dark, doomy, and heavy sound finally produced in a way that captures the dark essence of classic doom with the amplified power and brutality of more modern doom metal bands, LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE might just be PENTAGRAM's finest hour, resulting in one of the greatest (and most fun) doom metal albums in the entire genre. Be sure to stop by your local “Snooch & Gooch” and pick up some “rental snooch” and remember that there's a significant difference between “man coon balls” and “Maine Coon paws”. Discover how the transcendental power of hearing Sleep's “Dopesmoker” at a local tavern can manifest the “best Friday ever”, remember that snails are just slugs with a “tow behind camper shell”, prepare to “pet the horn” and get “a little tingly down in the nether regions” and JOIN US for a modern taste of classic doom from Alexandria, Virginia doom metal innovators PENTAGRAM with LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE. We dive deep into the tumultuous yet fascinating journey of Sabbath's later years and the cap it off by discussing the often-maligned 'Never Say Die' album. From Ozzy Osbourne's erratic behaviour and his temporary exit, to Sabbath's experimentation with new soundscapes and their revolving door of members throughout the 80s and 90, nothing is off limits. We've got a few hilarious and poignant anecdotes, tackle critical reviews, and even compare Sabbath's work to culinary experiences. Tune in for a spirited debate about one of rock's most controversial albums and find out if 'Never Say Die' deserves its spot in the rock pantheon or the bargain bin. 00:00 Introduction and Welcome 00:05 Black Sabbath Expedition Begins 01:08 Diverging Opinions on Black Sabbath's Evolution 01:41 Ozzy's Departure and Band Dynamics 03:03 Ronnie James Dio Era 10:21 Heaven and Hell Album Discussion 19:44 Mob Rules Album Insights 22:42 Born Again and Beyond 33:40 Headless Cross Era: A Stodgy Comeback 34:47 The Tony Martin Reappraisal 35:31 Tear and Headless Cross: A New Sound 38:57 Dehumanizer: The 80s Band Reunites 43:38 Cross Purposes and the Grunge Era 49:32 Forbidden: The Misstep 56:55 Never Say Die: The Final Ozzy Album 01:12:34 Nosey and the 70s Sound 01:12:50 Sabbath's Unique Riffs and Drumming 01:13:16 Influences and Inspirations 01:14:17 Critiques and Musical Textures 01:15:30 Hard Road and Vocal Performances 01:16:49 Medieval Covers and Side 2 01:19:23 Shockwave and Air Dance 01:24:08 Over to You and Breakout 01:27:04 Swingin' the Chain and Album Conclusion 01:35:14 Final Thoughts and Reflections
Well now. It turns out that 19 albums (technically 20 if you include Heaven & Hell's only album, The Devil You Know) is rather a lot. So our two parter has become a three parter. Whoops. But we tackle their discography with someone who knows the band inside out - Richard Bruce, from the band Moonshine Docks and formerly of Coffin Mulch. His encyclopedic knowledge of the band stands us in very good stead as we go about the business of talking about the band and their albums in detail. In this episode we chat about the band's history and then dive into all the Ozzy records, essentially covering all of the band's 1970s output. It's a pretty fascinating journey, and we really enjoyed getting to grips with the "classic" Sabbath material. Next week - Dio, Gillian, Hughes and Martin all come to the Sabbath party. We did it Crewnies! We made it through another Star Wars series on Disney Plus! Just a few hours ago I watched the season finale of "Skeleton Crew" but I fell asleep before getting this show up! The good thing is, my dog woke me up at 4:00am so I can put the show up now. I should probably go back to sleep though. Anyway, it's been fun talking Star Wars with you again, I'll see you for the next series - but until then enjoy as I talk about "The Real Good Guys" and remember - CREWNIES NEVER SAY DIE!
I can't believe after the this there is only one more episode of "Skeleton Crew" and one more episode of this podcast left! I think this episode did a nice job of setting up some major tension, showing us who the villain seemingly is, and leaving us still with more answers that we hopefully get answered next week! The way this last episode ended, when Fern said "We're Gonna Be In So Much Trouble," she had no idea just how true that statement was!
Happy New Year, Crewnies! Yes, I stayed up and watched some Ryan Seacrest with my wife last night5 and did not watch the latest "Skeleton Crew" until the following year. Which thankfully was today. Just finished it a little while ago and immediately started recording. Not a ton happened in this episode, titled "Zero Friends Again," but I'm still having fun! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mandalorianman/support
Happy Holidays, Crewnies! Yes, I know that I am a couple days late talking the latest episode of "Skeleton Crew" but I have a good excuse...I didn't do it until now. I mean, let's be honest - that's the greatest, most accurate excuse ever. But I'm finally here after taking a few extra holiday days off talking about the latest Crewnie adventure, "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates." And bonus, if you're accessing this episode on Spotify or YouTube you can watch me talk about this episode and never remember Jude Law's characters name! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mandalorianman/support
Ahoy Crewnies! Happy Tuesday Night and Happy "Skeleton Crew" night! This episode takes place all on one planet. Aye, eye Crewnies! I'm back talking a brand new episode of of "Skeleton Crew!" The adventure continues as the mystery deepens. From Derby Winner to Whiskey Namesake (and the Beatles, too!) I sit down with Brian Luffman, co-founder of Never Say Die Spirits, to delve into the transatlantic journey that birthed their unique bourbon brand. We kick things off with the riveting tale of a horse named Never Say Die, whose life-saving shot of whiskey led to an improbable Epsom Derby win and ultimately funded a Liverpool music venue where the future Beatles first performed. Brian's passion for honoring this remarkable legacy through their whiskey-making process is clearly evident throughout the episode. You've got custom mashbills made at a distillery in Danville, Kentucky (though they can't say where, I hint strongly at it), with partners on both sides of the Atlantic. It's easy enough to start a brand nowadays, but not everyone does it from scratch with their own mashbills and yeasts. Add in the complexities of both Kentucky and English aging and a transatlantic journey, and there's much more to this brand than meets the eye. Personally, I prefer the rye (so does Brian!), but both are solid pours at reasonable prices that have the extra component of a bottle designed by Stranger & Stranger, a guest on the Whiskey Ring Podcast back in Episode 74 and famous (to me) for their work with Compass Box. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Brian for entering the Whiskey Ring! Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals thrilling 7-6 win over the Nationals on Friday, July 5, 2024. Sonny Gray spotted the Nats five runs but the Cardinals grinded out a comeback trail throughout the game leading into a late-inning do-or-die scenario -- and Willson Contreras came through. His home run in the ninth inning propelled the Cards into extras where Ryan Helsley lost his save streak thanks to Rob Manfred... But he got something better than a save as he recorded a W on an excellent 11th inning, his second inning of work. Follow this podcast feed for Cardinals coverage daily all season!
