THIS WEEK on the GWA Podcast, we interview world-renowned scholar, Julia Bryan-Wilson – the Professor of Art History and LGBTQ+ Studies at Columbia University – on the trailblazing artist, Louise Nevelson! “It's not the medium that counts. It is what you see in it and what you do with it, " said Nevelson, the sculptor working in the mid-20th century New York City, hailed for her monochromatic, architectural wall sculptures amassed from found, recycled and discarded objects. Nevelson's monochromatic and architectural wall sculptures are amassed from found, recycled and discarded objects sourced from her surrounding environment (from bedposts to bannisters), which she coated in opaque paint and stacked tall to form all-engulfing units. Nevelson, like Krasner, studied with Hans Hofmann (you can almost feel the fragmented lines that form through her innovations), and was also influenced by the ancient ruins of Mexico and Guate- mala. This inspiration is evident in her work Sky Cathedral, 1958, which questioned new types of religious experiences and spaces. Bryan-Wilson is the expert in Louise Nevelson, having authored the monumental new book Louise Nevelson's Sculpture: Drag, Color, Join, Face (2023), as well as curated one-person shows: https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300236705/louise-nevelsons-sculpture/ A great documentary on Nevelson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnfEmNRzoCs&t=1332s&ab_channel=TheMet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnYBR9VAPsI&ab_channel=Tate Additional information: https://www.nytimes.com/1988/04/19/obituaries/louise-nevelson-sculptor-is-dead-at-88.html https://louisenevelsonfoundation.org/biography https://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/09/arts/design/09neve.html -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.instagram.com/famm.mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 ENJOY!!! Our capacity to care about others may have very, very ancient origins, a new study suggests. It might have been deep-rooted in prehistoric animals that lived millions of years ago, before fish and mammals like us diverged on the tree of life, according to researchers who published their study in the journal Science. “Some of the mechanisms that underlie our ability to experience fear, or fall in and out of love, are clearly very ancient pathways,” said Hans Hofmann, an evolutionary neuroscientist at the University of Texas at Austin, who was not involved in the research. Scientists are usually reluctant to attribute humanlike feelings to animals. But it's generally accepted that many animals have moods, including fish. The new study shows that fish can detect fear in other fish, and then become afraid too – and that this ability is regulated by oxytocin, the same brain chemical that underlies the capacity for empathy in humans. The researchers demonstrated this by deleting genes linked to producing and absorbing oxytocin in the brains of zebrafish, a small tropical fish often used for research. Those fish were then essentially antisocial – they failed to detect or change their behavior when other fish were anxious. But when some of the altered fish received oxytocin injections, their ability to sense and mirror the feelings of other fish was restored — what scientists call “emotional contagion.” “They respond to other individuals being frightened. In that regard, they behave just like us,” said University of Calgary neuroscientist Ibukun Akinrinade, a co-author of the study. The study also showed that zebrafish will pay more attention to fish that have previously been stressed out – a behavior the researchers likened to consoling them. Previous research has shown that oxytocin plays a similar role in transmitting fear in mice. The new research illustrates “the ancestral role” of oxytocin in transmitting emotion, said Rui Oliveira, a behavioral biologist at Portugal's Gulbenkian Institute of Science and a study co-author. Oxytocin is sometimes thought of as a “love” hormone, but Hofmann said it's actually more like “a thermostat that determines what is socially salient in a particular situation – activating neural circuits that may make you run from danger, or engage in courtship behavior.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

After her untimely retirement from her career as the director of the Dallas Museum of Art, Bonnie set her sights on bringing arts education to the field of medicine. After countless visits to clinics to diagnose her respiratory illness, she noticed a pattern among doctors examining her. They spent their time focusing on her chart but not her. Having spent her life teaching people about art she set about to design a curriculum that would teach doctors to examine the patient holistically. She started by bringing students from UT Southwestern Medical Center to the Dallas Museum of Art and training them how to look at works of fine and decorative art, from Neo-gothic bed frames to Congolese power figures she gave doctors the tools to approach their patients mindfully. In our conversation, we talk about her childhood visiting the studios of Robert Motherwell and Hans Hofmann, her career in museums, her Do Something New™ practice and her trailblazing work with art and medicine. Ray Eames was a graphic designer and abstract artist at the height of the post war era. She studied abstract art with Hans Hoffman for six years before meeting and moving to California with her husband, Charles Eames, in 1941. Ray was not professionally trained as a designer but was deeply involved in the design process. She combined her abstract sensibilities with her interest in structure and form. The Eames are most well-known for developing molded plywood chairs and other furniture that blurred the line between playfulness and function. The Eames Office did more than just design furniture. They worked on ads, packaging, exhibition spaces, toys, and even films. The Eames Office was incredibly collaborative, and everyone at the office was involved in every project. As a result, Ray never claimed any design as her own. However, she was responsible for some textile designs and magazine cover illustrations for the Arts and Architecture publication. Ray was in her element when it came to color and arrangements. She arranged furniture exhibits for Herman Miller and designed the color schemes for her own home. It's not hyperbole to say the furniture and designs that came out of the Eames Office defined a generation and they have Ray's influence written all over them.TIMELINE1912 – b Sacramento, California1931 – May Friend Bennett School for Girls 1932 – mentor at Hans Hoffman studio for 6 years1940 – moved to Michigan, studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art1941 – married Charles Eames1943 – Eames office established1942-1947 – covers for Arts and Architecture magazine1946 – Ray Eames pattern designs made 1953 – Deborah Sussman hired at Eames office1957 – Day of the Dead film1959 – Moscow World's Fair2010 – Eames exhibit made by Deborah Sussman and Andrew ByromREFERENCESBanks, T. Lorna Ritz talked about her process and the meditative work of creating space with paint. It was inspiring hearing her dedication to her work and how she shares that with students. We talked about modeling as a teacher and helping students learn how to see. Lorna also spoke about her beautiful large barn studio and the intensive process of renovating it - both when she first moved in back in 1986 and again more recently to abate a mold problem and save the barn. I loved hearing about her lifelong passion for oil paint and the way she thinks about color. Lorna has drawn the Holyoke Mountains for 36 years and is still learning them. Both the day and seasonal light changes on them constantly, filling her with curiosity to draw them better. She sets her easel up on a hill overlooking one of the only east-west axis mountain ranges in this country, formed by glaciers. The mountains are so close to her so she feels she can almost reach out to pet them, like they are a big animal moving up and down as the cloud shadows allow the sun to hit them in a pulsating way. She works and reworks each drawing for many days, obtaining a specific light from the sky falling on the mountains that will never bring these particular colors again. Everything in the drawing has equal importance; the tree is as important as the mountain behind it, the sky as important moving behind them, as important the foreground coming up towards the viewer. Everything is democratically related, a conglomeration of spatial movements interrelated, needing each other to survive. Lorna studied with Gabriel Laderman and Lennart Anderson in the 60's and received a BFA from Pratt Institute, changing the course of her painting life into pure abstraction, under the instruction of painter James Gahagan, (a student of Hans Hofmann). She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1971, in both painting and sculpture, (welding steel, and casting in bronze and iron). Lorna has taught at several universities including the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, University of Minnesota, and Dartmouth College. She has also been a visiting guest critic at the Vermont Studio Center and taught several drawing marathons at the New York Studio School. We discover the world of an incredible artist JESSE MURRY who passed away in 1993 leaving an extraordinary legacy of artwork, poetry and writing. Fusing the Romantic painting tradition of John Constable and J. M. W. Turner with the quality of mind and imagination of Wallace Stevens's poetry, Murry uniquely sought to create a “landscape” within the fiction of painting that could be “more than a place to dwell but a suitable space for dreams.”We meet two special guests this week to remember Murry's artwork and to explore his extraordinary thinking - the artists #LisaYuskavage @LisaYuskavageStudio and @JarrettEarnest - who together have united to curate an extraordinary new exhibition titled ‘Jesse Murry: Rising', curated by Lisa Yuskavage and Jarrett Earnest, at #DavidZwirner's 533 West 19th Street location in New York.Painter and poet #JesseMurry (1948–1993) identified three significant approaches to landscape—'poetic,' 'dramatic,' and 'visionary,' which he aimed to synthesize into abstract paintings. Born in North Carolina, Jesse Murry studied art and philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College before moving to New York City in 1979. His essays on artists including Hans Hofmann and Howard Hodgkin appeared in a range of publications, including Arts Magazine. After two years of teaching art history and exhibiting at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Murry enrolled in the Yale School of Art at the age of thirty-six. ‘Jesse Murry: Rising' brings together paintings from the last five years of the artist's life. This work—made while confronting his impending mortality from AIDS-related illness—testifies to Murry's lifelong belief in the capacity of painting to hold the complexity of human meaning, at the meeting of a material fact and a location within the mind. Exhibition runs from 17 SEPTEMBER – 23 OCTOBER 2021. Learn more: https://www.davidzwirner.com/exhibitions/2021/more-life/jesse-murryForthcoming on September 28, 2021, and titled after a paper the artist wrote while at Yale, Painting Is a Supreme Fiction is an unprecedented collection of Murry's writings. Edited and with an introduction by Jarrett Earnest and a foreword by Hilton Als, the book also includes transcriptions of two of the artist's notebooks, in which the spatialization of the words across the page approaches the condition of thought. We strongly recommend buying this special book!!!Thank you Lisa, Jarrett and the team at @DavidZwirner. #JesseMurry See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
How can you simplify your choices to create space for yourself without out feeling saturated or personally consumed? Time to ponder, pause and live into what you really want. We will be talking about how we consume as a whole, with simplicity by our side. Simplifying always brings up a lot of questions within us to get down to what is important for us to have or not have in our lives. Simplicity and Saturation comes to mind when considering how we consume, Digitally, Emotionally, Materialistically and Nutritionally. How can you simplify your choices to create space for yourself without out feeling saturated or personally consumed? Time to ponder, pause and live into what you really want. Noah introduces a conversation between Lee Krasner and Barbara Lee Diamonstein from 1978. Lenore "Lee" Krasner (born Lena Krassner on October 27, 1908 – June 19, 1984) was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage, who was married to Jackson Pollock. Although there was much cross-pollination between their two styles, the relationship somewhat overshadowed her contribution for some time. Krasner's training, influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofmann, was the more formalized, especially in the depiction of human anatomy, and this enriched Pollock's more intuitive and unstructured output. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/noah-becker4/support

The Atlanta Story podcast features meaningful stories of Atlanta's builders, creators, and entrepreneurs. In this episode Jon Birdsong sits down with Brian Steely, Founder of Steely Works. His start in the professional design world began when he sent an unsolicited tour design poster to the manager of Widespread Panic. Their interest and his new found calling sparked Steely's love for what he's done for the past 22 years. Since then he's done design work for restaurants, record labels, and corporations. In this episode we talk about principles of design, how to find the soul of a brand, and the worst career advice he's ever received. The Atlanta Story is put together by the folks at Atlanta Ventures -- and we can't wait to share some of the personalities behind the brand. Atlanta Ventures invests in entrepreneurs through community, content, and capital -- most notably through our Studio with companies like Greenzie and Intown Golf Club. We believe the best entrepreneurs learn from other great artists in different fields. In this episode, we discuss… Brian discusses his Widespread Panic poster design and what spawned that inspiration and connection. (1:33) How does designing for a corporation like Salesforce vs. a record label or a spirit change in your mind? (10:37) How did you discover your monoline style…or how did it find you? (13:18) How does a designer balance their work and their own following? (17:17) What specifically in Hans Hofmann inspired Brian the most? (19:01) In Brian's Creative Mornings talk he shared how he used his free time to find your symmetry. He shares the underlying principles in that theory? (19:57) What percentage of design success is salesmanship / marketing vs. creating great design? (21:47) What's the worst piece of advice Brian ever received? (23:44) How do you balance design and brand? Does the logo drive the brand or vice versa? (25:57) How does Brian figure out corporations v. spirits v. restaurants on what “feels” right? (27:29) Is it true that Brian turned down payment for his design and instead they let him come to any show he wanted to on the tour? What else came from it? (29:26) Brian explains what his creative process and schedule look like. (31:24) What inspires you? (34:50) How does Atlanta's design community compare to other cities? Do we have a niche? (36:05) Why Atlanta and what has Atlanta done for you? Philippians 1:6 NLT 'And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.' There’s a danger in our acquisitive, consumer society that we accumulate a host of ‘things’, a large percentage of which we fail to use. They are clutter we dare not get rid of. There is a healthy tradition within many parts of the Church to travel light. We are only visiting as pilgrims. Much better to establish a clear view on what we are living for, both now and into the future, so that we can only gather those articles that enhance our purpose. I have been deeply influenced by the Franciscans in this regard; simplicity is not going without but journeying with what I actually need. Moving house from Portsmouth to the Oratory gave us a tremendous opportunity to downsize. We did this ruthlessly, giving everything we didn’t need away through a variety of charities. Once we know who we are and what we are called to, it’s easy to ensure we only own what we need to realise that calling. The confidence that comes with such knowledge also helps on the gluttony front. I no longer comfort eat because I am comfortable in who I am and able to live as I choose to. With clarity of purpose I can begin to determine the activities I want to invest my time and energy into. Developing the work of the Oratory, finding ways to support a local charity and our church responsibilities all reflect what we know God has called us to throughout our mortal stay. Do you think simplicity is a synonym for poverty? If so, think again. Hans Hofmann, the American painter, said, “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” I trust my life says more in this season than it has ever proclaimed before as we work out the plans God has always had for us. QUESTION: How much of what you have serves God’s call upon your life? PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me not to conform to the pattern of this consumeristic world, but instead may I be transformed into the pattern of your dear Son.
Simplicity is something we have talked about a few times on past shows but it continues to amaze me how people make the process of turning dreams and ideas into reality very complex. In today’s episode we are exploring the art of simplicity in entrepreneurship.Today's show is sponsored by:Penji - Use code 'JUMBLE' to get 15% off your first monthOpportunityInChina.comSo there was this guy Hans Hofmann. He lived between the 1880 and 1966 and was well known as an artist and teacher. His career impacted many generations in both Europe and America. As an artist he both preceded and influenced abstract expressionism. So what’s abstract expressionism??? It’s a post WWII art movement in painting that was the first specifically American Movement that achieved international influence and put America at the center of the western art world. It’s often considered an important predecessor in surrealism and put an emphasis on spontaneous, automatic or subconscious creation. Well Hans Hofmann once said this about simplicity… ‘The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.’ When I talk to entrepreneurs and innovators I often hear very complex and bloated ideas that make the initial idea hard to understand or grasp. If you start with a bloated and complex idea it is really hard to move from the concept and into reality all while captivating your audience into action. Now it’s really easy to misunderstand ‘simplicity’ and I want to make sure that I’m clear in saying ‘over simplification can also be detrimental to the process’. What we are shooting for is the process of finding the sweet spot where your ideas and dreams flourish. So what exactly is simplicity? Simplicity can be defined in so many different ways. Here’s a few examples…the quality or condition of being easy to understand or do. "for the sake of simplicity, this chapter will concentrate on one theory" It brings clarity, clearness, intelligibility, comprehensibility, illumination, straightforwardness, and accessibility to the dream or idea.the quality or condition of being plain or natural. "the grandeur and simplicity of Roman architecture”… lack/absence of adornment, lack/absence of embellishment, unpretentiousness in executiona thing that is plain, natural, or easy to understand. plural noun: simplicities "the simplicities of pastoral living”. straightforwardness, ease, easiness, lack or absence of complication, effortlessness, manageability. For years, simplicity in the complex had been at the heart of Apple. Steve Jobs even addressed this when he said ‘That's been one of my mantras - focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.’ Now complexity has become the mantra of today. We have complicated relationships, complex integrations of technology in our lives, complexity that leads to over busyness, and complexity that leads us uncertainty / depression / and burnout. We want to be all things to all people, but in the plurality of being everything to everyone in business and life we loose the power of our identity and focus.Simplicity unlocks many superpowers in the process of turning our dreams and ideas into reality. In this complex world it’s time we stop being on autopilot and start taking the action to simplify the process to unlock a future we want to create. In a moment we will be back to go a little deeper about the art of simplicity in entrepreneurship.Welcome back, we are talking about ‘The art of simplicity in entrepreneurship’. In this segment I’m sharing 5 ways to incorporate the art simplicity into your journey of life and entrepreneurship. You’ll notice that I mentioned ‘life and entrepreneurship’ instead of just entrepreneurship. While I’m specifically sharing tips on simplicity in entrepreneurship, many of these tips can apply past entrepreneurship and really help you in life too. So if you aren’t an entrepreneur, you can keep listen and you will have some great takeaways for your life. But before we jump into the five tips, I want to go little deeper into what simplicity is and isn’t.Simplicity isn’t just cutting your idea or dream back to one thing. It is cutting away everything that doesn’t support your core idea and dream.Simplicity isn’t dummying down the idea and dream. It is making it clear so that people can understand and grasp what you are saying and doing.Simplicity isn’t boring design. It is intention design filled with beautiful design that matters.Simplicity isn’t easy. It’s actually a lot of hard work filled with purpose.Simplicity isn’t a shortcut to getting done quicker (although it may do that). It is a process of refinement and perfecting the idea or dream.I could go on, but you get the idea. Simplicity is often much harder to do. Duke Ellington once said ‘Simplicity is a most complex form.’Now I know that some of are are listening and thinking ‘Mike, I get it…simplicity is cool.’ But how do we move into using the art of simplicity as an entrepreneur? We’ll I’m glad you asked because I wanted to share 5 tips to use simplicity as an entrepreneur.Tip number one: Clarify your message. One of the first areas that many people over complicate their dreams and ideas in through the words they use to communicate their dreams and ideas. To be successful you need to focus on the message you use with yourself, your team, and the people you serve. Messages really only matter if people understand them and can buy into how this will solve a problem for them or the people around them. Often our messaging is based on our presupposed assumptions. Better known as bias. Everything we do is based on bias. If we want to be affective our message must remove bias that steals from the core of what we are communicating. This requires a deep understanding of the people we are serving. The simpler we can cut back the message to only what the audience needs, the better we will do in converting them to our way of thinking. This in turn will captivate them to engage with our message, product, or service. Unless you are specifically communicating with someone who inherently understands your industry you need to simplify industry speak. Let me give you an example. For several years I would have customers come into our web design and development agency and ask ‘what is the difference between a domain (web address) and the hosting. Often this is a question they had asked over and over again with agencies they had worked with in the past or gotten quotes from. Instead of trying to explain the differences using tech speak, I tried to communicate in a way that made sense to someone in terms they would understand. I would say something like.So you own a house and a friend wanted to come over and visit asked how do I get to your house You give them your address and they plug the address into their GPS and it takes them to your house. Now they are at your house but they aren’t in your house. They knock at the door, you open the door, and they come into the house to hang out. You then take them on a tour of hour house showing them the various rooms and your prized possessions. Now in this story, the domain is your address. It gets you to your house but thats about it. Your house is the hosting. That’s where you store all your stuff (your web pages). The various rooms are the pages of your websites. The stuff in the room are the photos, text, and other content on the site. This action of simplicity was all it took for many potential customers feel like I understood them, was able to communicate with them, and ultimately want to become our customer. When you clarify your message by using simplicity you will often find the right people to be part of your tribe and ultimately be your customer.Martin H Fisher who is well know for his teaching on the art and practice of medicine said this ‘Knowledge is a process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification.’We must use wisdom to simplify our message. This is key to our success.Tip number twoDeclutter overly complex systems. Many of us act as the chicken with it’s head cut off. We are running around responding to the latest emergency. We are responding without knowing how to prevent the emergencies we face. Our systems either don’t exist or are broken. This is often a side affect of overtly complex or bloated systems. Our systems are a key to the success of our businesses (and lives). We must have healthy simply systems. For me it’s something as simple as having my calendar sync with my wife’s calendar make all the difference in know what is on our schedule and if we can schedule something else on a specific day and time. This system is simple. It just works. However many of us use systems that are bloated, complicated, and inefficient. This steels from our time and energy.Simplifying our systems have two steps.Do we have a system for the things we regularly do?Our our systems working?A few years ago I hired two project managers for our business. One was very inline with our philosophy of simplicity both with working with our clients and in the systems we used to manage their projects. The other project manager wanted to add crazy amounts of systems that were slowing down our process and getting in the way of working with our clients. It was the path of least resistance vs duplication of work and effort. One project manager was right for our company, the other was not. Let’s talk about a few systems many businesses will have:-CRM (customer relationship management)-Project Management-Time Management-Payroll-Billing, invoicing, and contracts-and if you sell products you are going to have systems around inventory, shipping, online, purchases, and more.I could probably create a list hundreds if not thousands of systems for businesses if I took the time to do that. Simple things that many people forget like who cleans
As last season’s 5 FREE APPS TO MAKE YOU MORE PRODUCTIVE episode was so incredibly popular I thought that I’d continue with a couple of episodes this season on similar themes. Today I will present 6 awesome FREE extensions for Google Chrome. But before I get into that though, last week’s show looked at TOXIC PEOPLE and how their negatively charged behaviours can disrupt your life and work and ultimately destroy your productivity and your love for life. These toxic personality types included ENERGY VAMPIRES that suck the life force from you, CONTROL FREAKS that make your life a misery by trying to control what you say, what you do and even what you think. Then there are the manipulators who also try to control you but this time with underhand tactics and techniques like shaming, guilting and gaslighting. I highlighted what to watch out for with these sorts of people and ultimately how to deal with them. Now please feel free to get in touch and let me know how you are getting on with the calls to action that I suggest at the end of each episode. Also if you have a moment, please go to the contact page and message me to let me know what you are struggling with in your own life and work. I’m very interested in what productivity techniques you are adopting or what matters you are struggling with as if I can get a grip on your real-life problems I can tailor future episodes to tackle them. Remember that as a solo podcaster I have to come up with all the content that you hear here and your suggestions for futures shows, especially as I near the end of this season and am starting to think about the next would be most welcome. And if you’ve missed any of the shows please also remember that every episode already released can be accessed directly via filmproproductivity.com or on any number of the free podcasting apps that are out there. THE LESSON Some people say that they can run their business from their phone, and it’s undeniable that the power we have with cell phones or mobile phones as we call them here in the UK is significant, but as a regular organiser of film productions and as a filmmaker, a podcaster and producer I simply can’t operate without a computer. I use computers every single day because without them I’d find it near impossible to create, communicate and coordinate. And I have seen people successfully operate to a degree using Android Tablets or iPads but they take this to such a level with plugin keyboards etc that I will argue that they may as well use a laptop or a desktop machine anyway. And everything I will be recommending today is a connected to Google Chrome. That browser is available COMPLETELY FREE for both Mac and PC and even has versions which work on Android, IOS and Linux. I recommend it over all the other web browsers for 5 GOOD reasons. With one click, it loads web pages, multiple tabs, and applications with lightning speed as it is designed to be the fastest web browser available. It allows you to type both searches and web addresses in the address bar which Google calls The Omnibox. This in itself increases speed and efficiency. It is clean and simple. The omnibox and multi-tabbed browsing make navigating the web very easy. Also when you close chrome, it will remember the tabs you had open so you can pick up right where you left off. Chrome also comes equipped with a built-in PDF viewer which you can use to print, resize, and save PDF’s. Security and Privacy. Chrome keeps you safe and sound with its built-in malware and phishing protection. It has safe browsing technology and will show you a warning message before you visit a site that is suspicious. Chrome also automatically updates, so you always have the latest and most up-to-date version. If you are sharing a computer with other people, you can add multiple users to keep your bookmarks, apps, and extensions separate. Anything you update on one device will instantly update everywhere else you sign in to Chrome browser. Once you sign in, you decide what you want to sync. It’s incredibly efficient and as someone that’s used many many browsers over the years, I can assure you that Google Chrome is simply incredible for your productivity. The final reason - the reason I’m talking about it at all today is that Google Chrome is extremely customizable. Use the Chrome Webstore to add apps, extensions and themes. Apps and extensions give you the latest in productivity, games, education, etc. Themes allow you to bring your browser to life with colours and graphics and you can even create your own themes. Google Chrome in itself is, of course, my first recommendation but that’s not what this episode is all about. Once you have chrome you have an option to personalise it with add-ons such as Google Chrome Extensions. So as you know today I will be making recommendations for extensions to Google Chrome, but first things first: What exactly are Google Extensions? Well, EXTENSIONS are small software programs that customize the browsing experience. They enable users to tailor Chrome functionality and behaviour to their individual needs or preferences and as such an extension must fulfil a SINGLE PURPOSE that is narrowly defined and easy to understand. A single extension can include multiple components and a range of functionality, as long as everything contributes towards a common purpose. All Google Chrome extensions are published to the Chrome Web Store and I will provide links to everything that I talk about here in the show notes. Alternatively, if you are using Chrome, just search for the CHROME WEB STORE and browse in the store itself. New York Times Bestselling author and teacher of Buddhist meditation practices, Sharon Salzberg said Distraction wastes our energy, concentration restores it. And the first extension that I will recommend is one which will kill all those distracting websites but only for 30 minutes and it’s called FOREST, the full name is actually Forest: stay focused, be present. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/forest-stay-focused-be-pr/kjacjjdnoddnpbbcjilcajfhhbdhkpgk There’s a ton of these sort of anti-distraction extensions out there but this is the one I use, and it has never failed me. Like most of the others, it’s based on a time management system called The Pomodoro Technique which was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. That technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Forest uses that principle and provides an interesting solution to save you from Internet addiction. Basically, you set it up by typing in the websites that most often distract you. For reference, my blacklisted sites are youtube, gumtree, ebay, twitter, facebook and reddit. Once you’ve set that up with your own custom list you are all set to go. It sits like all other extensions in your browser bar and when you feel you need to work without distractions you click it. When that happens a pop up appears to indicate you have planted a virtual seed in the Forest app and over the next 30 minutes, that seed will gradually grow into a tree. During the next 30 minutes you will be blocked from visiting those sites and if you decide to override it, the little tree will start to wither away and die. With this interesting mechanism, your own sense of achievement and responsibility will drive you to stay away from the distractions with no pain. It’s a self-motivated and interesting method to help you beat Internet addiction. It helps you to cultivate (literally) your personal pattern of time management by making good use of 30-minute chunks of time to fully concentrate on your work and finish it effectively. I’ve never actually done it but you can also share your trees with friends or colleague which I can see the benefits of. Hans Hofmann said “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” Next on my list is an extension called JUST READ. This is an incredibly useful extension which does one thing and does it well. It simplifies web pages. It removes ads pictures and other distractions from whatever website you are on and just shows you the text, in an easy to read and well laid out format. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/just-read/dgmanlpmmkibanfdgjocnabmcaclkmod When you give it a click you remove distractions like the page's styling, ads, popups and comments and can read the article in a customizable, simplified format - like a read mode but better! No login required and it’s completely free! Another thing that it does, which they don’t advertise though, is that it makes locked text on a website available to copy. As someone who likes to chuck in the occasional quotes and that means that I can copy and paste that text into my podcast notes. “Simplicity is the soul of efficiency.” Said Austin Freeman and can easily repeat that here as I used JUST READ to simplify the page I stole it from. It’s a really useful extension and that’s why its number 2 on my list here. This list btw is in no particular order. Number 3 on my list, and I also rated it highly in my useful apps episode is the POCKET extension. I love Pocket in all its forms. It’s basically a way of bookmarking orsaving yourr favourite articles, videos etc, for later reference. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/save-to-pocket/niloccemoadcdkdjlinkgdfekeahmflj It beats, hands down the other competitors for ease of use and it syncs across all devices – iPhone, iPad, Android and more. Basically when you find something in Chrome that you want to view later, put it in Pocket. That involves just clicking the pocket button on your browser bar. It then automatically syncs to your phone, tablet or other computers so you can view it at any time, even without an internet connection. You can add tags to it and pocket will even suggest recommended related content which if you are researching a podcast, for example, is really kinda useful! It’s completely free but you can upgrade anytime to Premium for a more powerful Pocket experience. If you use pocket regularly you’ll likely need to put aside a bit of time each week to catch up on what you’ve stuffed in there along the way but don’t worry, unless you delete it you will be able to access your pocket saves indefinitely. One last thing is that when you click to view your pocket list, it gives you previews of everything you’ve saved, so unlike in a bookmarks folder, you can find what you are looking for very quickly. It’s a fast, efficient and totally awesome Google Chrome Extension. NEXT UP is an extension called ONE TAB. Albert Einstein “Out of clutter, find simplicity.” and that’s EXACTLY what this extension will do for your browser. If you’ve ever found yourself with too many open tabs, you just click the OneTab icon to convert all of your tabs into a list. When you need to access the tabs again, you can either restore them individually or all at once. It's really useful if you are midway through researching something and want to ensure that it’s all there the next time in the same format. Also when your tabs are in the OneTab list, you will save up to 95% of memory because you will have reduced the number of tabs open in Google Chrome. The information about your tabs is never transmitted or disclosed to the OneTab developers, but the exception to this is if you intentionally click on the 'share as a web page' feature that allows you to upload your list of tabs into a web page in order to share them with others. Tabs are never shared unless you specifically use the 'share as a web page' button. ONE TAB is one of those really functional, yet simple, add-ons that you never knew you needed. I love it. Fifth on my list of recommended productivity extensions is MOMENT. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/moment-1-personal-dashboa/lgecddhfcfhlmllljooldkbbijdcnlpe Following along with the theme of simplicity all this really does is give a clean and modern look to your default Chrome homepage. When you call up a new tab it comes up not as the default Google search page but as a simpler and more appealing page which you have customized. With this app you can either turn an image of your own into a background for the new tabs or choose from a selection of hi-res photos and videos from its recommendations – This will become your default Google background image. It’s basically like a desktop background for your browser. I use a stream running through a forest video, which is nice and calming. In the top right corner, it has a HUB icon that when pressed offers you the choice of reopening recent pages or bookmarks or sessions. You can also access via another tab any number of apps that you have chosen from a full list when you set it up. Finally, it offers a todo list which I don’t use as I already use another todo list app called to-doist, which is also one of my very regularly used Chrome Extensions. Lastly, it gives an option to use an onscreen note taking app which occasionally comes in handy. The main reason I have this though is just for the calming image and simple customizable tabs which it offers. It might not make you that much more productive, in all honesty, but it will make you a little happier and a little bit calmer along the way - as the Dalai Lama says “Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence - that's very important for good health.” The 6th and final extension that I want to talk about m here – I have more but let’s not get carried away. The Sixth extension is, and if you’ve not been using it you should do, is Grammarly. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/grammarly-for-chrome/kbfnbcaeplbcioakkpcpgfkobkghlhen Grammarly offers a host of features that are incredibly helpful in editing any writing, whether it’s a social media post, a call sheet, a script or a novel and it’s FREE. It’s freeeeee! Incidentally, it can be installed in any browsers, obviously Google Chrome, but also in Firefox, Safari, and Edge, and it will automatically check any writing. For example, it can mark mistakes on emails and forms as users write in the browser. It scans the whole document for any mistake, including grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors. Anyone can use it anywhere, but it does require users to be connected to the internet so that it can properly identify mistakes. It then informs the writer of the document what steps can be taken to improve the writing, and it's up to the user whether to heed the advice akin to a professional's. Grammarly will make sure your messages, documents, and social media posts are clear, mistake-free, and impactful. Adding Grammarly to Chrome means that your spelling and grammar will be vetted on Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Tumblr, and nearly everywhere else you write on the web. Once you register your new account, you will start to receive weekly emails with personalized insights and performance stats which is useful too, and if it annoys you, you can just ask it to stop. It’s a contextual spelling checker which detects correctly spelt words used in the wrong context. It can fix hundreds of complex grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement, article use, and modifier placement, to name just a few. Grammarly adapts to your needs and writing style, giving you the confidence of mistake-free communication every time you write. Forbes magazine says “Grammarly quickly and easily makes your writing better and makes you sound like a pro, or at least helps you avoid looking like a fool.” and The Harvard Business Review: “...good grammar is instrumental in conveying ideas with clarity professionalism, and precision...Good grammar is simply good business.” SUMMING UP Douglas Adams said, “We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that works.” Well, the technology that I list here today does just work and I encourage you to try it. I could list another 5 or 6 Google Extensions off the top of my head, but that will have to do for now. If you find yourself very often working online like I do or working through a web browser where you access your working email etc then these extensions will make life easier and far more productive for you. CALL TO ACTION A link to every chrome extension that I’ve talked about here and a full transcript of this episode is available at filmproproductivity.com and may appear on your podcasting apps too. Please be aware though that some podcasting apps will remove links from the RSS feed. If you want to guarantee that they will be there go to the official website which I have full control of. What I’d say for a call to action is load the extensions, one at a time, and them out and see how they work for you. They’re all free but some have some in-app purchases which can be used to expand their capabilities. I however only use the free versions. As with all technology you’ll have to spend a few minutes getting to know what it offers, so I’d strongly suggest that you try them one at a time – If they work for you then great but if they are not your cup of tea, it’s as easy as right-clicking them on your Chrome browser and tapping remove from chrome. ENDING Next week’s episode, will be talking about why filmmakers should shoot with what they’ve got and why keeping up with the Jones’s or lusting after the next big thing, is a really bad habit to get into. I’ll end today’s show with the words of Pablo Picasso who said - “Computers are useless. They can only give you answers.” Now, take control of your own destiny, keep on shootin’ and join me next time on Film Pro Productivity. The podcast music is Adventures by A Himitsu. You can view the show notes for this episode at filmproproductivity.com If you’re struggling with something you think I can help with or would like to tell me how you are getting on then please get in touch via the contact page on the website. Alternately you can get me on Twitter @fight_director or follow the show @filmproprodpod Please support this podcast by subscribing, leaving an AWESOME review and spreading the word. If you can get just one new person to tune in I’d really appreciate it. On Sunday, June 10, 2018 Overcoats joined us for an intimate concert. The New York-based female electronic-pop duo of Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, performed in the historic Hofmann Studio in Provincetown, the former West End home and studio of artist Hans Hofmann, as part of Twenty Summers' annual month-long arts festival. The talented best friends’ debut, Young, released in 2017, was praised as a “memorable album” in a rave review by critic Bob Boilen. In a vocal style that is minimalist yet rich in melody, they deliver songs of connection and tension, on the depths of love and the challenges of family.
As the latest installment of our ongoing tribute to the painters who worked and taught in the Hawthorne Barn when it was an art school, Marcelle Polednik, a museum director and curator, and Karen Wilkin, experienced art critic and curator, discussed and presented images from Hans Hofmann: Works on Paper, an exhibit they curated for MOCA Jacksonville in Florida, demonstrating the ever-evolving work of Hofmann and the inspiration he drew from Provincetown itself. This event and video were made possible by generous support from the Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust.
Dr. Hans Hofmann from the University of Texas at Austin talked about his research and fun field stories on neural and molecular mechanisms and evolution of social behavior in Cichlid fishes. He also gave insights in how to pursue science in the future.
The Wichita Art Museum currently has an exhibition of five local artists called Art's Pure Voice: Abstraction in Wichita. The title is lifted from artist and educator Hans Hofmann.
This episode is a conversation with UT Austin's Hans Hofmann about a number of related topics in biology. We start with computational biology and bioinformatics (the original topic of the episode). From there we moved into genetics and DNA sequencing as an example for where comptutational biology is used. Finally, we talked about Hans' own research on biological foundations of social behavior.
What to say about Ken Jacobs? An avant-garde film legend from his early epic film STAR SPANGLED TO DEATH to his Nervous Magic Lantern live performances. Even at just 40 minutes, his new film SEEKING THE MONKEY KING is another epic, combining strong political statements with his incredible use of abstract 3D imagery, showing how a new technology (and tired fad) can be used to create great art in the right hands. Ken’s son, filmmaker Aza Jacobs, sits in and interviews him, covering his past and present work now spanning 50-plus years, his time with Hans Hofmann, Stan Brakhage and Nicolas Ray, and how Ken met Flo. http://www.starspangledtodeath.com/
