A striking blend of nature, science, and conceptual art, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living features a 13-foot tiger shark suspended in a tank of formaldehyde. Created by Damien Hirst in 1991, the artwork invites viewers to confront the raw presence of death while gazing into the preserved stillness of a once-lethal predator.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Wes Lang is a contemporary artist based in Los Angeles. His work is best recognized through symbols including skulls, horses, and the indigenous American, as he aims to convey themes of freedom, mortality, and the American Dream. Lang draws inspiration from his heroes–fallen country music icons and jazz musicians–to tap into the rugged spirit of post-pop Americana and inspire a sense of opportunity and mythic adventure. Lang's artistic reach includes creating pieces for Kanye West and the Grateful Dead. Though his main medium is canvas and paper, he has also produced work using cast bronze, collage, fabric, and hotel stationary, with his pieces held in prestigious international collections like the MoMA, Damien Hirst's Murderme collection, and an upcoming exhibition at Damien Hirst's Newport Street Gallery. Represented by Almine Rech worldwide and V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, Lang continues to push boundaries with his unique blend of pop culture and existential themes. ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: Vivo Barefoot http://vivobarefoot.com Use code 'TETRA' ------ LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ House of Macadamias https://www.houseofmacadamias.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA'

We meet curator and writer Gemma Rolls-Bentley to discuss her exciting new book Queer Art, recorded in front of a live audience at the Turner Contemporary in Margate.Gemma's debut book Queer Art; From Canvas to Club and the Spaces Between is out now. With nearly 200 artworks selected by leading LGBTQI+ curator Gemma Rolls-Bentley, this book mixes the high-brow with the low, gallery stalwarts with Instagram stars, and the racy with the fabulous. This is a unique celebration of queer life – a must-have for the LGBTQI+ community, art lovers and anyone interested in the culture surrounding queer identity. The twentieth century saw key shifts for the LGBTQI+ community across the western world: from the Stonewall uprising to the first pride parades and homosexuality law reforms. The years following these milestone moments have seen queer life face new challenges, celebrations, injustices and liberations. As ever, this journey has been closely mapped by art and culture. Artists working across all mediums from painting, performance, digital and beyond have captured key moments, from the HIV/AIDS crisis and the rise of drag, to marriage equality and the fight for trans liberation.Gemma was born and raised in South Yorkshire. She spent her early years living on a farm and then in a village on the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border at the edge of Sheffield, where her parents still live. She left when she was 18 to go to Edinburgh University to study Maths & A.I. but graduated with a degree in Art History instead. When she moved to London to do an MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art she discovered that everyone in the art world was posh. She changed her surname to Rolls-Bentley on Facebook as a joke and it stuck. Gemma curated her first exhibition when she was a student in Edinburgh, a group show of fine art students in an abandoned travel agents. She's been curating ever since. She's spent almost two decades working passionately to champion diversity in the field. Curating exhibitions and building art collections internationally, her curatorial practice amplifies the work of female and queer artists as well as providing a platform for art that explores LGBTQ+ identity.Gemma is a creative consultant and advisor for brands, organisations, and cultural projects, in addition to teaching at numerous institutions including the Royal College of Art, the Glasgow School of Art, and Goldsmiths. She spent a decade working at the intersection of art and technology, holding positions of Chief Curator at Avant Arte and Curatorial Director at Artsy. Prior to that she spent 6 years working at Damien Hirst's studio, where she learned a lot about the art world (and what she wanted to help change). She co-chairs the board of trustees for the charity Queercircle, and sits on the Courtauld Association Committee. She was previously a trustee for Deptford X. In 2011, Gemma launched the arts arm of the East London Fawcett Group and ran their 2012-2013 Art Audit campaign.Recent curatorial projects include Tschabalala Self's first public art project at Coal Drops Yard in London, the Tom of Finland Art & Culture Festival, and the Brighton Beacon Collection, which is the largest permanent display of queer art in the UK. In 2023, she curated the group exhibition Dreaming of Home at Leslie Lohman Museum of Art in NYC, and she is the host of the museum's new podcast series.Follow @GemmaRollsBentley Hosted on Acast.
June Art Market Dynamics: Bridget Riley's Auction Record, Damien Hirst's Prints, and Prints & Editions Watch During the podcast, Sheena Carrington & Jasper Tordoff get together to discuss various topics related to the art market dynamics in the month of June. Sheena Carrington mentioned that June is an important month for the art market as it marks the end of the first half of the year's sales. She also mentioned the impact of Christie's cyber attacks and the influence of print sales, as well as the Art Basel exhibition in Switzerland. Jasper Tordoff, a sales specialist, joined the discussion and shared his expertise on artists like David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, and others. They discussed the recent Phillips auction, where a work by Bridget Riley set an auction record for any print by the artist. They also discussed the performance of Damien Hirst's "The Virtues" prints and the overall state-of-the-art market. They mentioned the recent Bonham's auction, which had a poor sell-through rate, and discussed the correlation between the performance of Hockney's originals and prints in the market. They also mentioned upcoming Hockney prints that will be featured in the end-of-month June auctions.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

News and views aplenty in this month's Omnibus, good, bad and damn frightening. Elin McCoy finds there is great wine, food and art at Château La Coste in Provence (currently showing 85 of Damien Hirst's works), reviews the new releases from Champagne Bollinger, and discusses the new Mouton Cadet range designed for Gen Z with Philippe Sereys de Rothschild. Over in Macau Jane Anson judges the new Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards and reveals the winner. It's April so inevitably John Stimpfig and Sarah Kemp are talking about the Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, with the perennial question, what price will the châteaux release at. The good news is that the tariffs have been lifted on Australian wine into China and the Old Vine Conference has announced their Hero awards. The frightening news is that a report has come out predicting 29% of vineyards will not be able to produce premium wine by the end of the century. Great news for charity though, John Stimpfig is back on his bike to raise money for the Hospitality Industry, a 200km bike ride across Burgundy, but before then there is a Gala Dinner in London. Listen in to hear all about it. This Omnibus is brought to you by our Founder Sponsor, Santa Rita Wine Estates.Find out more at wine-conversation.com

Well, it is the end of March, spring has sprung, and April showers are coming in fast and furious. We're back with the monthly Art Angle Round Up, where we focus our attention on three headline-making stories that have made the rounds in the last month. This week, Art Angle hosts Ben Davis and Kate Brown are joined by Artnet brand editor William van Meter. First up is the latest from controversy-machine Damien Hirst. The former YBA enfant terrible is back in the news for fudging the dates of his signature formaldehyde animal series, which itself follows the news from a few years ago that those same sculptures "leaked noxious gas." Next up is a conversation about the International Center of Photography (ICP), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Ben's story, titled "How Do You Tell Photography's History? ICP's Big Birthday Show Embodies the Struggle" and William's "The Exquisite Life of Photographer David Seidner" broach larger questions about what ICP's vision is as a photography museum and more broadly address the state of photography today. Finally, it's our birthday! In February, we marked 10 years of Artnet News, and the trio revisits some of the biggest stories published over the last decade, and the future of art media.
In world that seems to be constantly reacting to seemingly random events that control and bring fear & trauma into our lives 24/7, events like, the Lusitania sinking WW1, Pearl Harbour WW2, the JFK & RFK Assassinations, Vietnam, 911, 7/7, Boston, and on and on. In 2020 we had CONvid, then Russia/Ukraine and today Israel bombing the shite out of Palestine. One man who has single headedly reported on many of these events is Richard D Hall from Rich Planet, so today we invited Nick Kollerstrom on to report on the High Court hearing he attended in London on January 29th 2024.In Part 2 Dom & Chris discuss, the RDH case, Mariana Spring, Trudeaus ex-wife, RAF Wyton, Damien Hirst, Derek Draper & Alcoholism, we also talk go through some emails and comments.Baaahttps://www.sheepfarm.co.uk/music/https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/sheepfarmstudioshttps://odysee.com/@sheepfarmstudios:fhttps://rumble.com/user/SheepFarmStudioDom's Health Bunker Sodium Ascorbate [VitC] Powder Health Bunker SupplementsUse discount Code HB-SF25OFFshop.healthbunker.co.ukwww.healthbunker.co.ukEmail info@sheepfarm.co.uk or info@healthbunker.co.ukThe views expressed in this podcast are only our opinions, they are not a statement of fact.
MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Jan 16th Publish Date: Jan 12th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Tuesday, January 16th and Happy 43rd Birthday to MLB future HOF Albert Pujols. *** 01.16.24 – BIRTHDAY – ALBERT PUJOLS*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's starting Feb. 21 Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's Elton John is set to auction part of his extensive art collection from his recently sold Atlanta home. The auction, beginning on February 21 at Christie's, is expected to generate at least $10 million. John, who recently retired from performing, sold his Buckhead condo last fall for $7,225,000. The items for auction include a custom Damien Hirst, an 18th-century costume by Sandy Powell, and silver leather boots with E and J embossed. The decision to sell is emotional for John, who, along with husband David Furnish, is culling the collection. The auctions will be held both live and online, showcasing different aspects of John's life and collection. A public exhibition in New York City will precede the auctions from February 9 to 21, featuring a pop-up gift shop with John's merchandise. STORY 2: Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts An error by the U.S. Education Department in calculating financial aid could result in lower subsidies for students. The mistake involves not updating a key part of its aid calculation index for inflation, which has risen approximately 20% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects the amount of a family's income that is "protected" in the adjusted gross income calculation, which determines a student's financial aid need. Unless this is corrected, families may appear to have more resources than they do, leading to less financial aid for students. The issue was first reported in late 2021 and the department is currently determining how to address it. STORY 3: Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has received a $6.1 million federal grant to install 300 to 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports across 20 counties in metro Atlanta, particularly in areas where such infrastructure is currently limited. The move comes as part of efforts to prepare for the upcoming EV revolution and ensure equitable access to charging facilities. Charging at these new stations will be free. The grant is part of a wider $622.6 million fund allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the bipartisan infrastructure law for nationwide charger installations. The first chargers under this program are expected to be operational in 12 to 18 months. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – GCPS STORY 4: Shipping containers will soon house struggling Atlantans A new affordable housing complex in downtown Atlanta, constructed from repurposed shipping containers, is nearing completion at 184 Forsyth Street. Donated by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department, these containers were initially used as patient overflow facilities during the COVID-19 surge in Macon. The 40-unit community, built in just 60 days at a cost of $125,000 per unit, aims to address homelessness and connect vulnerable populations with resources. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens praised the project as an innovative solution for rapid-affordable housing. The Forsyth Street site will offer permanent housing and wrap-around services, with residents expected to move in next month. The mayor plans to expand similar shipping container communities across the city to combat homelessness. STORY 5: Estate of now-infamous Murdaugh family goes up for action The South Carolina estate of the notorious Murdaugh family, known as the Moselle Estate, is going up for auction with a minimum bid of $1.1 million. Alex Murdaugh, the former resident, was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021 and is currently appealing his sentence. The property has changed hands several times since the crime. Proceeds from the initial sale went toward legal fees, the surviving son, a local bank, and victims of a 2019 boat crash linked to the family. The estate, which features a mix of classic charm and modern amenities, includes a 5,300-square-foot home on 21 acres. The auction will take place on February 15. We'll be back in a moment. Break: DRAKE – INGLES 3 STORY 6: This half-eaten sandwich is up for sale for $1.3M on Facebook On Facebook Marketplace, a half-eaten sandwich is making waves with a staggering $1.3 million price tag. Listed as "new" by a cheeky seller from Leicester, England, the grilled sandwich, described as "very crispy," is up for sale because the vendor couldn't finish it. This quirky listing follows a trend of bizarre food items being sold on the platform, such as a man offering "the saddest lunch ever" – a baked potato drowning in baked beans, eaten off a glass microwave plate. The eccentricity of these listings has sparked amusement and commentary on social media. STORY 7: Michigan coronation is most-watched title game in four years The Michigan-Washington College Football Playoff National Championship game marked a four-year high in ratings and viewership. Averaging a 12.3 rating and 25.05 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes, the game saw a 41% increase in ratings and a 45% increase in viewership compared to the previous year. Michigan's victory delivered the second-largest audience of the college football season and ranked fourth in viewership among all non-NFL sportscasts since 2018. The full College Football Playoff averaged 23.6 million viewers, up 15% from the previous year, and marked the highest average since the 2017-18 season. The entire 43-game bowl season averaged a 2.3 rating and 4.48 million viewers, showcasing a 5% increase in viewership over the previous year. First Lady Marty Kemp and the Grace Commission, which she leads, were present at the opening ceremony. This week, we're dealing with two seemingly unrelated topics, but actually they are both linked by a common idea. That link is the idea of looking at things from a different angle. A listener asks why she constantly moves between projects without ever finishing anything, and we suggest some questions to ask and some viewpoint shifts. Meanwhile, British artists Damien Hirst launched a new project which we initially found somewhat laughable, but which morphed into something else when we gave it some thought. We also share our recommendations for an inspiring podcast and a life-giving TV show. We hope this chat inspires you to perhaps look at something in a different way - there is always more than one viewpoint. On this week's episode, Melissa transports us to the South of France for a conversation with international hotelier Paddy McKillen about art, wine, architecture, and his passion project in Provence, Château La Coste. Villa La Coste, a 28 suite boutique hotel, sits on the grounds of the extraordinary 600-acre estate, Château La Coste, where you will also find an open-air contemporary art museum and winery. In this episode, you'll learn how Paddy went from working at his parent's motor repair company in West Belfast to transforming a 300-year-old winery in the South of France into a wine estate and contemporary art park with a boutique 5-star hotel and incredible restaurants on site, including one from the Argentine celebrity chef and king of outdoor cooking, Francis Mallmann. Between the outdoor art complex and culinary offerings, plus the state-of-the-art spa, immaculate pool area, and ultra-chic accommodations, there is good reason Melissa is excited to highlight the hotel and the massive art park at Chateau La Coste. It features works by some of the most notable names in contemporary art and architecture, with sculptures and buildings from Frank Gehry, Tadao Andao, Louise Bourgeois, Andy Goldsworthy, Tracy Emin, Sean Scully, and Ai Wei Wei, to name a few. The South of France is home to an expansive world of art. With the term "weird studies" gaining currency inside and outside academia, Phil and JF thought it was time to discuss the philosophical method they've been developing on the podcast since 2018. Borrowing a term from Erik Davis, they call it weirding, and here set about trying to understand what it is, and what it means. David Lynch's fondness for crying, the practice of queering in cultural theory, the all-too-real phenomenon of "global weirding,"the spooky agency of artworks, and the tragic death of E.T. at the hands of Damien Hirst are just a few of the subjects touched on in the conversation. "Weirding" also happens to be the working title of the book your hosts are writing for Strange Attractor Press, as well as an eight-week series of lectures and discussions starting October 25th, 2022, on the Nura Learning platform.
