Am 17. Juli 2025 wird Carlo Gwerder 40 Jahre alt. Als Kontrabassist von Waschächt und als Bähnler hat er seine perfekte Balance gefunden. Carlo Gwerder kam am Fusse des Stoos, am Eingang des Schwyzer Muotatals zur Welt. Schon als kleiner Junge entdeckte er dank seiner Grossmutter die Liebe zur Volksmusik. Über das Schwyzerörgeli und das Klavier fand er 2002 zu seinem Herzensinstrument, dem Kontrabass. Heute ist er Bassist beim Quartett Waschächt. Obwohl er hier in der zweiten Reihe spielt, wurde er durch seine fröhliche Art und seine Musikalität zum Sympathieträger. Ausserdem ist Carlo Dirigent und Jodler beim Jodlerklub Rothenthurm. Beruflich ist der ausgebildete Möbelschreiner bei den Rigi Bahnen angekommen. Seit 18 Jahren arbeitet er als Lokführer, im Büro oder als Heizer bei der Dampfbahn. Besonders schätzt er den Kontakt zu den Gästen. In seiner Freizeit geniesst er die Berge, geht biken oder Skifahren. Musik, Bahn und Natur – diese Mischung macht ihn glücklich. Man könnte sagen, mit 40 Jahren hat er bereits alles, was er sich wünscht. Sein Wunsch zum runden Geburtstag: dass alles genauso bleibt, wie es ist.

Tampere ist die drittgrößte Stadt Finnlands und liegt inmitten der finnischen Seenplatte, etwa eineinhalb Zugstunden nördlich von Helsinki. Die alte Industriestadt liegt zwischen zwei großen Seen, die durch eine Stromschnelle verbunden sind. Hier wurde die Wasserkraft im 18. Jahrhundert Anziehungspunkt für die Industrie. Noch heute prägen zahlreiche Backsteingebäude und Schornsteine die Silhouette. Tampere ist die beliebteste Stadt in Finnland – kein Wunder: Sind hier doch Stadtleben und Natur so nah beieinander wie fast nirgendwo. Außerdem gibt's in und um Tampere 70 öffentliche Saunen, dazu viele Restaurants, Cafés, Bars und Museen. Eines der Museen ist den Mumins gewidmet. Die nilpferdartigen Comicfiguren von Tove Jansson sind fast auf der ganzen Welt bekannt und feiern 2025 ihr 80-jähriges Bestehen. In Tampere steht auch die älteste, öffentliche Sauna Finnlands. Seit 1906 wird in der Rajaportti Sauna geschwitzt und geschwatzt. Noch immer wird der Ofen mit Holz beheizt, einer der Heizer ist Deutscher: Alexander Lembke, der sogar zum Finnischen Saunameister 2024 gekürt wurde. Auch wenn es rund um Tampere recht hügelig ist, eignet sich die Gegend zum Radfahren. Mountainbiker kommen hier voll auf ihre Kosten, und entlang der Seeufer gibt's viele Möglichkeiten für längere Radtouren für jedes Fitnesslevel. Zurück geht's mit einem Dampfschiff, das, ganz klar, ebenfalls mit Holz beheizt wird. Petra Martin war für uns in Tampere und nimmt uns mit in die Stadt zwischen zwei Seen, die Saunen und ins Mumin-Museum.

Directly northwest of Washington DC, Montgomery County is Maryland's most populated county, with well over one million residents. In 1980, the Montgomery County Council made one of the most significant land-use decisions in US history by creating the Agricultural Reserve. Heralded as one of the best examples of land conservation policies in the country, the Agricultural Reserve encompasses 93,000 contiguous acres – almost a third of the country's land. Today, the Reserve comprises hundreds of working farms that produce a variety of products plus trails and parks for public use. Moreover, it provides habitat for wildlife, helps the region meet its clean water commitments to the Chesapeake Bay, hosts educational field trips for schools and is a hub of agritourism, and much more, all within 30 minutes of Washington, DC. Kristina Bostick is Senior Conservation Associate at the Montgomery Countryside Alliance (https://www.mocoalliance.org/). She grew up in Montgomery County (hiking Sugarloaf every year on her birthday) and has returned after a number of years in North Carolina where she earned her Masters in Public Administration and worked on numerous environmental issues, including stormwater mitigation and greening local governments. Schweizer Bergbahnen fahren durch majestätische Landschaften und winden sich auf spektakuläre Gipfel. Sie faszinieren mit einer einzigartigen Mischung aus Tradition, Technik und Natur. Und ziehen Menschen in ihren Bann. Mit viel Dampf, Schweiss und Fingerspitzengefühl befahren auch heute noch historische Loks und Triebwagen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert regelmässig die Strecken. Genauso wie ihre modernen Nachfolger, die mit dem neuesten Stand der Technik und Technologie glänzen. Das Brienzer Rothorn im Berner Oberland darf sich eines der spektakulärsten Panoramen rühmen, die die Alpenwelt zu bieten hat und auch die einzige Bergbahnstrecke der Schweiz mit täglichem Dampfbahnbetrieb sein Eigen nennen. Vor 130 Jahren von Hand in den Berg getrieben, führt die 7,6 Kilometer lange Strecke vom Fusse des smaragdgrünen Brienzersees bis auf 2245 Meter über Meer. Hinauf geht es mit einer der traditionsreichen Dampfloks – die ältesten stammen noch aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Lokführer Ueli Fischer nimmt die Zuschauenden mit auf das Rothorn. Er und Zugbegleiterin Stefanie Aebersold sind ein eingespieltes Team, das Zug und Passagiere sicher ans Ziel bringt. Durch die charakteristischen Felsengalerien an der Flanke des Rothorns bahnt sich der Zug seinen Weg vorbei an allerlei tierischen und neugierigen Zaungästen, über die Mittelstation Planalp mit ihrem urchigen Berggasthaus hinauf bis zur Rothorn-Kulm. Ein Highlight für Bahnfans aus aller Welt sind die regelmässigen Fahrten mit dem «Würschtli-Bummler», einem Nostalgiegespann, das neben dem Lokführer auch einen Heizer braucht und für einmal Pilatus und zurück 300 Kilogramm Kohle benötigt. Das Rothorn ist aber nicht nur Magnet für Touristinnen und Erholungssuchende. Der Berg bietet einen idealen Lebensraum für eine vielfältige Flora und Fauna, wie Adler oder grosse Gämsen- und Steinbockpopulationen. Und auch die Menschen zieht es in die Höhen des Rothorns. Sie suchen auf dem Berg oft alternative Wege – ob bei einer Wanderung oder im Leben generell – und finden auf dem Berg ihre eigene Vorstellung von Zufriedenheit. Ob beim sommerlichen Käsen auf der Planalp, als Wildhüter oder Gastwirtin. Ihr Alltag ist dabei oft eng mit den Geschicken der Bahn verwoben, die ein Leben auf dem Berg erst möglich machen.
