A discussion with eyewear designer and foudner of Soho Bespoke, on the relationship of form and function. A few weeks ago, I stood in a spectacles shop trying on new frames. I found myself selecting a simple gold-rimmed wire pair. And in the mirror, I was reminded—which, I'll admit, took me by surprise—of four-year-old Calandre wearing something very similar, thanks to the design decisions of the NHS. And so today's conversation is perfectly timed. It is one about the relationship between form, function, and fashion. Most creative entrepreneurs exist at this intersection most of the time. They are drawing together their creative ideas and ideals, colours, materials, combinations, and methods alongside the practical need for things to 'work'. I am quite sure that this tension creates excellence—and, I am sure, many an existential crisis. We are joined today by Charlie Ingham, founder of Soho Bespoke, an eyewear design consultancy. Charlie designs spectacles for both opticians and fashion brands. She works from concept to sampling and manufacture across the UK, Europe, and Asia. With clients including JW Anderson, Margaret Howell, Cubitts and Nanushka, I can safely say Charlie has just the insight we are looking for on this topic. We are going to explore the eyewear industry and the fine craft of spectacle making. We will consider the importance of function, understanding, and science before looking at the dynamics of look and feel. Finally, we will debate their combination and connection.

The lauded New York designers , who have been toiling away at their label for the past twenty four years (to varying degrees of success) are departing. And it looks like they are most likely headed to Loewe. Let's talk about how this impact the luxury landscape: from all but confirming JW Anderson is moving on up to Dior, to where might current designer Maria Grazia go? Created by Zeda the Architect, this event was all about celebrating the vital role that Irish stylists play in shaping, promoting, and advancing the fashion industry while connecting it to the broader design community - often seen as the glue that brings the industry together. The evening consisted of two panel talks, the second moderated by Tech Powered Luxury included Shana Chu, Aoife McNamara, Evan Doherty, Sinead Keenan, Anne O'Shea and Lawson Mpame. What could possibly bring a CEO, a Director, photographer, stylist, producer and designer together? Of course it would have to be a conversation around fashion - the industry that is not quite yet seen as one in Ireland but that's finally starting to make an impact. Just yesterday, two of Ireland's most successful designers - JW Anderson and Simone Rocha - took home two of the biggest prizes at the British Fashion Awards, a testaement to the talent coming from Ireland.

Welcome to Episode 13 of Pattern Portraits! Lauren Godfrey chats with artist Madeleine Pledge about stripes as borders, patterns as graphs and Virginia Woolf's concept of frock consciousness. Madeleine Pledge is an artist working sculpturally, employing a myriad of processes including knitting, sewing, casting, ceramics and printmaking. Her work stretches and contorts, leaves a physical impression, can be worn or perhaps has been. It wraps itself around and loops through, balancing and poising. Her work revels in material elements of fashion and from the history of design, reworking and reinterpreting them as a means to understand systems of production, power and authorship. Madeleine's take on pattern is a really broad and conceptual one, the patterns she has chosen are closely linked with her work and include childhood polkadot dungarees, a stretch knit stripe from a photograph by artist Sylvie Fleury, a pair of op art and binary code inspired balaclavas made by Madeleine after the artist Rosemarie Trockel, zig zag stripes by Missoni, and a trio of striped knitted garments by JW Anderson. With appearances by her cats, Trish and Kit, and agendas that almost always go to shit, we aim to dive into a discussion about style and break some bread in each episode.  In episode three, Wine, Wraps + Runway Trends, Sarah hones in on the fashion trends for the spring/summer 2024 season based on the collections unveiled in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. She also pinpoints her favorite looks and discusses some of the designer shakeups at each house, such as Sabato De Sarno's debut for Gucci. It's also the first time Phillip Lim has shown a runway collection at New York Fashion Week since 2019. She tries very hard to pronounce everyone's name correctly. Sarah “wraps” up Fashion Month by twisting open a mini bottle of Sutter Home Pinot Grigio and ordering a fried chicken Caesar wrap from Alessio's Cafe in Hoboken. BoF's editor-at-large and founder and editor-in-chief look back at the key moments of fashion month, from Sabato de Sarno's debut at Gucci to Sarah Burton's farewell show for Alexander McQueen. Background: This season, fashion month saw several highly-anticipated debuts (Sabato de Sarno at Gucci, and Peter Hawkings at Tom Ford) as well as goodbyes (Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, Fabio Zambernardi at Prada and Miu Miu, and Gabriela Hearst at Chloé). But, beyond those headline-making moments, the highlights included the slyness and humour at Prada where models walked down a runway against a backdrop of dripping slime to an Alfred Hitchcock soundtrack, Dries Van Noten's and models at JW Anderson in plasticine-made hoodies..“The best shows make you think and make you feel a little uncomfortable or they evoke some kind of emotion — but they also make you want to shop,” says Imran Amed, BoF's founder and editor-in-chief. Following the conclusion of Paris Fashion Week, Amed sat down with BoF's editor-at-large Tim Blanks to discuss the highlights of the Spring/Summer 2024 season and the hallmarks of a great fashion show. Key Insights:Sabato de Sarno's much-anticipated debut at Gucci, which included a change of venue from the streets of Milan's Brera district to Gucci's headquarters forced by inclement weather. “If those girls had been walking on cobblestones just like people going somewhere, seeing those clothes in a real environment, it would have taken on a different kind of life,” says Blanks. Alexander McQueen said goodbye to Sarah Burton, who served as a steward for the brand for more than 10 years after the death of its namesake designer. ( “ She was so umbilically connected with [McQueen] that the brand ethos was sustained to a remarkable degree. I would hate to see McQueen now become one of those brands where no one really knows what to do with it and it's in play,” says Blanks. Rick Owens show featured plumes of coloured smoke and bursts of rose petals — and a collection full of thought-provoking statement pieces. “There is really no one like him in fashion, and I don't know if there has ever been anyone like him in fashion,” says Blanks. Blanks calls Undercover's Jun Takahashi one of the industry's most fascinating designers. This year, Takahashi showed a provocative collection that played with proportions and layering, with a finale that included “terrarium” skirts, filled with plants and live butterflies. “He makes clothes that … people might consider to be avant garde, but they're so beautiful and wearable as well,” says Blanks.Prada was the “show of the season.” A few years into Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons' collaboration as co-creative directors, the show's success was a convergence of elements beyond the collection itself — from the soundtrack (Alfred Hitchcok's “Vertigo”) to the set. “It reminded us of Prada in its full glory where there was that slyness and humour and perverse glamour,” says Blanks. Getting right back into it though, tonight I'm talking to John Wesley Anderson about his new book Lou and Jon Benet, an outstanding story about Homicide Detective Lou Smit, and his quest to find Jon Benet Ramsey's killer. John Wesley Anderson, MBA, is a published author, storyteller, and TEDx speaker. He enjoyed a 30-year law enforcement career and was twice elected Sheriff for El Paso County, Colorado (1995-2003). Prior to serving as Sheriff, John was employed with the Colorado Springs Police Department and retired at the rank of sergeant (1972-1995). After being term-limited as Sheriff, in 2003, John went to work for the Lockheed Martin Corporation, where he focused on corporate and homeland security initiatives and advanced technology development. In 2012, he retired from the corporate world to launch a consulting company, JW Anderson & Associates, LTD., allowing him the freedom to pursue his passion for writing, history and the arts. Although John has traveled around the world, including several adventures on a catamaran sailing the Caribbean, three corporate security assignments into a combat zone on the Horn of Africa, and landing on an aircraft carrier at sea in the Pacific Ocean, he remains most fascinated by the rich history and art discovered in his own backyard in the American Southwest. John and a team comprised of retired detectives and the Smit family continue the hunt for Jon Benet's killer. Please consider donating to their GoFundMe at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/JonBenet-Lou-Smits-family-searches-for-justice. About Lou and Jon Benet. On Christmas Night 1996, six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey was murdered in her family's home in Boulder, Colorado. A ransom note was found in the home, but it was hours before her father, John, found her body in the basement. She had been strangled with a garrote and her skull was fractured. The media sensationalized the tragic death of the “child beauty queen” and public speculation and rumors ran rampant. What followed was one of the most notorious unsolved murder investigations in American history. Boulder police fixated on JonBenet's parents as suspects. Needing investigative help, the Boulder DA brought in legendary homicide detective Lou Smit. However, he was soon disenchanted with law enforcement's obsession with the Ramsey family as the primary suspects, excluding other possibilities. Smit resigned but continued to work on his own time, and at his own expense, determined to find justice for JonBenet. He determined the Ramsey family was not involved in her death but died in 2010 before he could identify the killer. Thousands of people attended his funeral service, including John Ramsey, and the detective's lifelong friend and colleague, John Anderson. Along with a handful of retired detectives, Anderson and Smit's family continue to pursue justice based on Smit's work. Now, for the first time in LOU AND JONBENET, Anderson tells the story of Smit's investigation and why the Smit family team now believes that the killer can be identified. To learn more about John and his writing check out his Meet the Author page on the WildBlue website. Don't forget to check out Blood Red Ivory on amazon or where ever books are sold. DSquared2 pulled out the big guns for a super sexy SS24 show in Miami Beach with none other than Julia Fox as a celebrity guest. Full of graphics, barely-there silhouettes, and nostalgic throw backs, this show is full of your late 2000s favs while still feeling fresh and relevant. JW Anderson also gave us some fantastic summer dressing inspiration in his Resort 2024 show. Heavily featuring knitwear, there were more than a couple pieces we've got our eye on

Creative Director of LOEWE and founder of JW Anderson, Jonathan Anderson, speaks with Helen about his innovative approach to fashion, from collections that are equal parts cultural commentary and artistic play, to pushing gender boundaries and materiality, to redefining the word “luxury.” Jonathan and Helen sit down to break open the divisions between craft and art, creation and appropriation, and high and low culture.

Jonathan Anderson is one of today's most visionary minds in fashion. Founder of an eponymous label, JW Anderson, and Creative Director of LOEWE, the Northern Ireland-raised designer came to the industry via theater: ‘I've always been fascinated by character building,' he says in this episode. ‘If I hadn't gone to drama school, I don't think I would be able to produce the collections I do today.' Beyond his beginnings, Anderson speaks to Marc Spiegler about his love of ceramics, the timelessness of a Renaissance masterpiece, and the importance of artistic production today. ‘To me,' he says, ‘the artist is the most exciting person in the social ecosystem, because they should be allowed the freedom to tackle the things we can't.'LOEWE currently have applications open for the 2023 edition of the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize. The winner will be announced in Spring 2023, following which they will stage an exhibition in the summer. And finally, LOEWE Women's SS23 show is taking place in Paris on 30 September 2022.

Fashion Week is about to get underway in London once again and all the focus will of course be on the designers and the looks they send down the runway. But who actually produces those clothes? In many cases the answer will be MAES London, a fashion manufacturing business established by entrepreneur Diana Kakkar in 2018. Diana trained as a fashion designer and has worked across Australia, the US and the UK gaining extensive experience in garment construction and design development. She headed up the production development at London-based luxury label Erdem where she recognised the opportunity to establish a local manufacturer, that designers could trust and with whom they could develop a long-standing relationship. MAES London has grown from a 500 sq foot space to a 4,000 sq foot studio in the short space of three years is now working with some of fashion's biggest names including Erdem, Christopher Kane, Molly Goddard, Emilia Wickstead, Acne Studios and JW Anderson to name just a few. It also works with newly established sustainably focused labels, Berjoan and LR.D. Diana talks to Lauretta Roberts, Editor in Chief of TheIndustry.fashion, about what it was that encouraged her to take the plunge and set up the business, what the response has been like, how it fared during the pandemic when fashion shows were cancelled, and what her vision is for the business moving forward.Get breaking news as it happens and be the first to know when our podcasts go live by following:  INSTAGRAM  ***  LINKEDIN  ***  TWITTER  ***  FACEBOOKGet breaking news, big name interviews & insights delivered to your inbox daily HERE

(10:10) Then in the main segment they break down Harry Lambert's wonderful video with Who What Wear all about the fashion and styling of the Fine Line Era (12:54). Listen for a discussion of the various looks of the era from the Fine Line cover shoot to the iconic JW Anderson cardigan, a discussion about accessorizing and how Harry's fashion inspires the hosts, and Gray's questionable take on the Lanvin sheep sweater vest (can you tell who wrote this episode description?) They then get into what looks they wish Harry Lambert had talked about (51:00), what outfits from the Fine Line era they're not so hot on (59:43), and what they think the legacy of Harry Lambert's work with Harry Styles will be (1:03:34). Finally they close out the show by laughing at a dumb internet comment in “must get rid of toxic in community” (1:06:07) and chatting about some non-Harry related things that have been bringing them joy over the week (which yes, do exist; 1:08:00). BoF Editor-at-Large Tim Blanks, The Washington Post’s fashion critic Robin Givhan and GQ’s Rachel Tashjian explore the past, present and the future of the event that makes the industry go round — the fashion show.   LONDON, United Kingdom — Do fashion shows still matter? In the latest episode of The BoF Podcast, BoF Editor-at-Large Tim Blanks, The Washington Post’s fashion critic Robin Givhan and GQ Magazine writer Rachel Tashjian join BoF Executive Editor Lauren Sherman in a virtual panel discussion on how the pandemic tested designers’ ability to captivate buyers, media and consumers through creativity and the use of digital tool. What happens next? For Blanks, in order to look forward, you must look back. Fashion shows have always “[meant] almost everything in fashion to an enormous degree… They challenge, they provoke, they’re disturbing, they’re overwhelming,” he said. However, over the years, people have looked at the shows of the past as “a world that’s gone in a way… it has that kind of poignant tug.” As industry commentators, Blanks, Givhan and Tashjian have taken note of how designers pivoted their strategies following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and what set them apart. For Givhan, JW Anderson’s “show in a box” tapped into “the desire for something tactile, the desire for something that felt personal… that you could hold, that wasn’t a digital... distant thing.” Although livestreams have a way of broadening a brand’s reach, as a critic, Givhan finds being “forced to look in one particular direction” hinders the experience. “Sometimes I find the most interesting element to be something that’s over in a corner, but that’s not the main thing that’s walking down the runway towards me,” she said. In the future, Givhan hopes designers will use technology to “tell a story about their clothing, to weave a narrative in some way… to evoke emotion,” instead of carbon-copying a traditional runway in a digital way. “It [just] feels… like something that… doesn’t really quite fit,” she said. For Blanks, what has come out of this period of uncertainty — and the modes of communication adopted — shouldn’t be forgotten. “I hope that there will be this immediate contact, this sort of intimacy,” he said. “I find that more interesting than maybe the way that we used to deal with things. I don’t want a press release, I want to talk to people.” Related Articles:A Year Without Fashion ShowsWill Covid-19 Change Fashion Shows Forever?Who Are Fashion Shows For?   Watch and listen to more #BoFLIVE conversations here. To contact The Business of Fashion with comments, questions, or speaker ideas please e-mail podcast@businessoffashion.com.   Sign up for BoF’s Daily Digest newsletter.   Ready to become a BoF Professional? The girls sit down in between shows during London Fashion Week for a relaxed conversation about how Jenny came to being flown all over the world to attend the world’s most prestigious shows alongside Scott. They cover everything from her career ascent, her love of Miuccia Prada, how to remain yourself amongst all the noise on social media, and why shopping vintage is the most sustainable way of being stylish nowadays. Aidan Cullen may be young, but his body of work more than speaks for itself. WIthin the past few years, he has gone from shooting friends skating in the neighborhood, to shooting for brands like Prada, Braindead, JW Anderson, and many more. Aidan exemplifies what it means to follow your passions and to stay true to yourself. We joined Aidan and a small group of friends on the floor of a preschool to talk about his start, some of his influences, his upcoming tour with Buddy, and much more.
