In this episode of How to Fix Democracy, host Andrew Keen, speaks with journalist Sally Lehrman, founder of the Trust Project - a global initiative aimed at restoring trust in journalism. They discuss the origins of the project, inspired in part by the 1947 Hutchins Commission report on media responsibility, and how today's digital landscape has blurred the lines between news and content. Lehrman outlines the Trust Project's "Eight Trust Indicators" which help news outlets demonstrate transparency, ethical standards, and commitment to diverse voices. She also addresses the challenges posed by ideological biais, opinion vs news, and journalism on platforms such as Substack. The conversation explores how media organizations can rebuild credibility, empower the public, and support a healthy democracy through responsible, clearly-labeled reporting.

Over the next two weeks I'm providing some personal comments and thoughts on parts (certainly not all) of The Honourable Justice Michael Lee's judgement where he was the presiding judge in the Lehrman v Network 10 Trial Judgement which he handed down on 15th April 2024. These are MY thoughts and opinions on Justice LEE's judgement and not about what I think about Bruce Lehrman or Brittany Higgins per se – it's about how His Honour saw it and the lengths he went to, to try and help us all understand it a little better. Justice LEE has shown a deep understanding of the ‘humanness' and complexities of human nature emotions, particularly regarding victims to a crime. He has shown fairness and transparency and has gone to great lengths to explain why he made the decisions he has. It showcases the depth of research and reference, particularly to case laws which assisted him in those decisions he made. Bottom line is, alone, I feel he's restored some faith in the community's confidence in the judiciary. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I spoke with Gail Lehrman about her love for New York City, how she came to become a writer later in life, and what's so special about her debut novel, Across Seward Park. Here's a description of the novel: Unions. Strikes. War. Depression... Set in the crowded tenements and teeming streets of New York's Lower East Side, Across Seward Park follows one family's journey through the roiling events of the 20th Century. Irving Friedman and his big sister Miriam struggle to survive in the savage sweatshops of the early garment industry. Then Marxist firebrand Leo Hirsch comes into their lives, drawing Irving into the dangerous world of union building and Miriam into a bittersweet romance. As the decades pass and the family weathers war, a Depression, and war's aftermath, Irving becomes the sole custodian of a haunting family secret that will put him on a collision course with Miriam's ambitious daughter Shelly. Cash Lehrman is the Chapter President of the Bridgewater-Emery FFA in Emery, South Dakota. He is also a cattle rancher on his family's first generation operation, and he has his own business clipping cattle for other ranchers in preparation for their performance sales. Cash ranches with his family in Eastern South Dakota, and has been doing so all of his life. By now, he is well aware of the challenges that come with raising livestock in South Dakota, especially in the Springtime, when they seem to get some late winter storms and lots of precipitation. His long term, future plans, are to ranch cattle on his families property and continue to grow this business. Cash's short term plans really caught my ear as we spoke. After he graduates this year, he will be heading to Oklahoma State University to get his degree in animal science. The natural follow up question is "why Oklahoma State" when you are from South Dakota? I thought his answer really demonstrated just how much he loves working with cattle. Cash's answer was all about nutrition. He knows from the reading and research he has done due to his own curiosity that the methods of grazing and feeding cattle in the lower plains is different than that of South Dakota. He wants to learn how and why ranchers in the Southern Plains graze on winter wheat and then can follow up with a wheat harvest of what was just a forage crop. It is Cash's natural curiosity about raising cattle and his desire to know more that will take him to Oklahoma, and then who knows where else before he finds himself back on his families ranch.

I get asked on almost a daily basis for recommendations for yoga teacher training programs. You would think that after 25 years in yoga, I would have some, but the truth is very different. Yoga teacher training programs vary widely, change regularly, and come with a host of problems. On this episode with my friend and colleague, Michelle Lehrman, we discuss some of the biggest issues with YTTs, including forcing participants to make and accept hands-on adjustments, shaming people who hold different opinions or do things differently, and forcing a one-way approach to this ancient, adaptable practice. Michelle Lehrman is a certified 200-hour and trauma-informed yoga instructor who has been teaching in New York City since 2016. She currently teaches at Crunch (yoga and spin), Sacred Space Astoria, and Lionheart Health, and works with private clients. I met Michelle when she participated in the Three and a Half Acres Yoga Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training a 20-hour supplemental training for teachers with a 200 + hour yoga teacher certification. This training hopes to undo some of the damage caused by many YTTs and offer a safer approach to teaching yoga. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your support is deeply appreciated! A recent Gallup/Knight Foundation study revealed, "Only 26% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the news media, the lowest level since Gallup and Knight began tracking in 2017.” But this study also suggests: "Many Americans are not solely skeptical of news today — they feel distrust on an emotional level, believing news organizations intend to mislead them and are indifferent to the social and political impact of their reporting.” The main takeaway from the study may be that it states: “Emotional trust is more deeply rooted and is especially important to understand in the context of the news media. This study shows that emotional trust has a strong relationship to perceptions and behaviors that could harm the critical, mutually beneficial relationship between the health of the press and the health of U.S. democracy. The more emotional trust Americans have in the news, the more likely they are to say news organizations balance staying in business and serving the public well.” These findings, published by Knight in February of 2023, help reaffirm the need for the news media industry to apply some form of self-directed standards to evaluate and score a news platform's level of credibility and trust. One of the organizations that has been working towards this goal is the nonprofit, nonpartisan Trust Project, which defines itself as "a global network of news organizations working to affirm and amplify journalism's commitment to transparency, accuracy and inclusion." The method behind the scoring of a participating partner's news media platform is their eight Trust Indicators® which is "a collaborative, journalism-generated standard for news that helps both regular people and the technology companies' machines easily assess the authority and integrity of news.” As E&P has been reporting, the Trust Project has added media partners and "top line" funds to its spreadsheets, thanks to a recent $500,000 contribution from longtime supporter Craig Newmark Philanthropies. The Trust Project operates as a consortium of top news companies led by founder and award-winning journalist Sally Lehrman. In this episode of "E&P Reports," Lehrman talks about the Trust Project's research of news consumers — called interview sets. Initial studies revealed that “many people work very hard to check and cross-check the news to be sure they can trust it. Others feel overwhelmed by the quantity of news. Still, others are frustrated and angry by what they feel is misrepresentation.” The Trust Project found out that “people wanted a lot more information about, as one interviewee put it, ‘how the story was built.” A summary of the project's first round of interviews appears in Lehrman's 2017 essay in The Atlantic: “What People Really Want From News Organizations.” Lehrman goes on to say that more recent findings reveal that in 2020, everyone became more engaged with news, but there was a lot of anxiety as well. She stated, "(People) were upset about what they were reading in the news and anxious about it. They were worried that they'd heard about all the mis- and disinformation. They were worried that they would get fooled by it.” Lehrman went on to say, "There's this middle group that I call the anxious middle who are ready and open for news they can trust. And it's just for us to walk into... In through the door that's open for us by them.” In this 186th episode of “E&P Reports,” we explore the nonprofit, nonpartisan Trust Project as we chat one-on-one with its founder and CEO, Peabody Award-winning journalist Sally Lehrman, who talks about the organizations founding in 2014 and the methods they employ today to: "Help news organizations make it clear that we do have standards and policies and rules that help journalists walk this path of independence and away from any kind of personal agenda, business agenda, or government agenda.”
https://youtu.be/nfjlO5z4SiM Peter Lehrman is the CEO of Axial, a private deal network serving professionals who own, advise, and invest in North American lower middle-market companies. We talk about the North Star Metric, the due diligence checklist for buying a business, and the benefits of having perseverance in business. --- Find Your North Star Metric with Peter Lehrman Our guest is Peter Lehrman, the CEO of Axial, a trusted online platform business owner and their M&A advisors use to safely and intelligently. explore and execute capital raises, acquisitions, and exits with strategic buyers or professional financial sponsors. Hey, Peter, great to have you on the show. Same here, Steve. Thank you for this. Looking forward to it. I've been looking forward to this as well. Not the least because AXS was one of the first SAS service that I used in this country. Ten years ago, we subscribed to your platform, I think it was a fairly new platform and we used something called, used to be called merger market in Europe. And we found Axial to be the closest alternative, we really liked merger market and then we found Axial and it was, it was a critical piece of our business, it was investment banking business and without your platform, I think we would have been very, very short of information about the market investors. So it was very, very helpful to us at the time. I'm happy to hear that. I mean, that's a great plug. So thank you so much. I know that the platform has changed a lot since and we'll cover that later in the show. So just as a warmup, so tell me and our listeners a little bit about your entrepreneurial journey. How did you become this technology entrepreneur of this SaaS business, this platform that you built? So, you know, a couple of different places to start the answer to that question. Very quickly, I mean, I am the fifth of five children. My father was an entrepreneur. And so there was a lot of entrepreneurial conversation at the dining table as a kid. So that was maybe where it got started. And I was always working jobs in the summer and stuff like that. But then I'd say to just make the answer somewhat brief, my first job out of college was working with my brother Thomas and his partner, Mark. They co-founded an information business in New York as an information services company. And the company makes it easy for professional investors to speak to experts as part of analyzing companies and studying companies and making good investment decisions. And, you know, it typically gets referred to as like a technology enabled information services company. And to make that, you know, sort of long story short, that was an incredibly successful and rapidly growing business. I happened to just be lucky. My brother was starting it. I was their first intern and I was at the company kind of shortly after day one just as an intern. And then I went there right out of undergraduate school and I worked there for about six years. And over that time, the company grew from almost no people and no customers to a couple hundred million in sales and close to a thousand employees. And I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. And I tried to just sort of hang on to the rocket ship and do my best work. But that was kind of where things got started for me. That was when I had a great experience. That was my first experience like being part of a fast growing company. I was just like, this is an incredible career path. This is an incredible way to spend your career is trying to either launch or be part of fast growing companies. I left and went to graduate school. I went to Stanford for graduate school. Obviously Stanford's like, you know, in the center of Silicon Valley. And so it's just tech, tech, tech, tech all day, every day. And I went in 2006 when I was there, finished in 2008. So, you know, that was like SaaS and Salesforce.com and like web 2.0 was kind of taking over and the first generation of really succ...

Ep.#5 [THEME FIVE] What is a fair price to pay if you want to hire an investment banker/broker to sell your company? What value and services should you expect in return for the price you pay? In the middle and lower private markets, these questions have traditionally been very opaque. Typically, entrepreneurs have to find answers to these questions by meeting with multiple advisors, talking to their network, and discussing the topic in their peer groups. Today on the show, Peter Lehrman, the Founder of Axial, the M&A and capital raising platform for the middle market, is back on to help us shine light into this cloudy area of the M&A market by reviewing the results of the Axial’s 2021/22 M&A Fee Guide. Axial and Firmex just released the results of an online survey that was completed by 269 middle market professionals from July through September 2021. Three-quarters of them work as investment bankers or merger advisors, and another ten percent call themselves business brokers. Many of them are leaders at their firms. You might be asking, why is this important? If you are like many business owners, when you think of hiring a banker/broker, you think of the direct cost that will be taken out of the transaction. However, this hire is almost essential. Doing all the paperwork and organization while selling a company is not just a night and weekend job. If done correctly, an intermediary can provide invaluable advice, experience, and resources to the sale process of a company. They should pay for their fees and more. On today’s show, Ryan and Peter Lehrman not only review the survey’s results, they talk about how to find, negotiate, and engage with an investment banker or broker. // WATCH THE INTERVIEW ON YOUTUBE: Intentional Growth™ Podcast What You Will Learn Key insights on M&A advisory fees in the middle market. The different types of M&A advisors and how to understand the differences. The variety of ways M&A advisors structure their fees and engagements. Why it’s important to understand the number of companies a firm typically sells a year. What a firm’s deal flow, the number of active engagements, and the size of the firm mean to you. The different ways upfront fees work and what you should expect from the engagement. How the transaction fee is determined, the range of percentages advisors charge, and what may or may not be negotiable. Why extremely high upfront fees can be a huge red flag and what to do about it. What the negotiables are when looking to hire an M&A advisor.

My guest today is Peter Lehrman the Founder and CEO of Axial, and we’re going to be talking about the market of buying and selling privately held companies, the inefficiencies as well as the progress. Peter is CEO and founder of Axial, responsible for delivering the company’s vision to become the trusted platform where private companies and their trusted advisors connect with capital. If you’re a business owner thinking about selling for the first time, and you have no idea where to start, this episode is for you. There’s a ton of information out there about how and when to sell your company, but not all advice is weighted equal. Bad advice goes a long way to souring your view on selling your company. Peter Lehrman is the Founder and CEO of Axial — a marketplace where small businesses can find their next M&A advisor, investor or buyer — and he’ll help clarify what areas you need to educate yourself in and how best to achieve that education in time to make a positive difference in the sales process. On today’s show, we talk about inefficiencies between the buyer and seller, the state of the marketplace and the trends with entrepreneurs through acquisition (ETAs) in the lower middle market space. This is an awesome episode full of smart insights into the booming market of mergers and acquisitions. Prior to Axial, Peter worked in private equity at SFW Capital Partners and was part of the founding team at Gerson Lehrman Group, where he helped build the company’s dominant global technology platform for on-demand business expertise. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and received his MBA from Stanford Business School. Quotes: 12:01 - “The number one goal for Axial is to create a set of introductions for buyer and seller, at the right points in time, on the right opportunities, with the right types of buyers and the right types of sellers.” - Peter Lehrman 16:38 - “I think we’ve made a huge leap forward in terms of the amount of people making content in the form of podcasts and books.”
Peter shares some background information about himself and his company, Axial. Explanations of the various different types of buyers who make use of the Axial platform. How Axial categorizes the businesses that are sold through their platform. Two business deals which have recently been closed through Axial. Reasons for the high amount of activity in the small business M&A economy. Peter runs through the process of buying a business that is explicitly for sale, and the process of buying one that is implicitly for sale. The range of lengths of time it can take for a business to be sold. How businesses are usually valued. Peter explains how Axial's platform facilitates the buying and selling of businesses. Steps of buying a business which follow the initial introduction between buyer and seller. A shortcut to building trust. The part of the process of buying a business which takes up the most time. Why you shouldn't sign an NDA without understanding what it contains. Examples of actions that can breach certain NDA's. What a typical letter of intent consists of.
