So this was one of the most powerful shows that I've ever had the honor of producing in the last nine years. I did make formal show notes, but I just don't think it does it justice. First off, I want to say thank you to Don Mann, Seal Team 6 legend, star of Surviving Mann and the toughest man I have ever known.Randy Couture -Google the name TV&Movie Star alongside Sylvester Stallone in the Expendables movie series UFC hall of famer, Six time UFC champion, 14 years in the UFC but there was so much that I didn't know about Randy.Randy is former US Military and his mission now is really out there to help others. He founded the Extreme Couture GI Foundation. He's collabed with merging vets and players. We talked about what it's like to be a UFC champion, what it takes. We talked about transition from that world into movie stardom. We talked about what real self defense and real fighting is like not just the sport if cage fighting. We talked about mental health, we talked about men's health. We talked about the pros and cons of social media and we focused on male role models, we talked about veteran mental health. We talked about so much.- this was truly one of the most powerful shows I have been part of- any summary here can not do it justice. So I encourage you to listen to it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.Randy, thank you so much for coming on. Don, thank you for connecting us. We mentioned so many former guests on the show, it was brilliant. This was one of the most surprising and humbling shows I have ever recorded in the 9 years the podcast has been going- Randy is a true gentleman and his wisdom, humility and knowledge will astound you - hopefully as much as it did me.You can connect with Randy on the show notes below. Dare to be honest about the life behind the work - Mat Voyce

In Episode 50, Radim sits down with Mat Voyce — type animator whose kinetic, character-driven lettering has earned him a devoted following and a client list most freelancers would dream about. What starts as a conversation about craft quickly becomes something more personal: how a self-described jack-of-all-trades with middle-of-the-pack grades found his calling through animated type, and how the pressure of building something real collided with the weight of anxiety that nobody could see from the outside.Mat traces his journey from childhood TV binges and PlayStation nights to architecture illustrations sold as wall art, to the type pieces he built in the evenings while still holding down a day job — quietly constructing the career he wanted, frame by frame. He talks about the boss who saw it coming and gave him the conversation he needed to leave, the freelance runway he built before making the leap, and the daily discipline of stepping up his personal work each year so clients keep finding him.But the episode's most powerful shift comes when the conversation turns to anxiety — and Mat's decision to go public about it. What he got back wasn't what he expected: an outpouring from designers and creatives who'd been quietly carrying the same thing. His honesty didn't just help him. It opened a dialogue that changed how he understood himself, his community, and what it means to show up fully in creative work.Takeaways:Being a jack of all trades isn't a weakness — it's a toolkit in progress. Every skill you collect compounds into something no single-track path could build. The evening sofa session matters. Doing your own work after a full day's work is how you invent the future version of your career.Building freelance backing before you quit creates both security and clarity. When it lines up, the leap isn't reckless — it's ready.Knowing what jobs to say no to is as important as being good at the jobs you say yes to. Staying in your lane protects your quality and your passion.Personal projects are the engine of growth. Each year Mat steps his own work up — new formats, new layers, new challenges — and clients follow.Sharing your struggles in public can unlock the real information that therapy and Google can't give you. Community is the most underrated resource a creative has.Anxiety is gradual, cumulative, and often invisible from the outside. Recognising it early — especially with a supportive partner — is what makes it manageable.Medication isn't failure. For Mat, it was the first thing that actually worked — and the honesty about it helped more people than any type animation ever had. Daring Creativity. As your children grow into teenagers, knowing when to step back can be one of the hardest parts of parenting. This week on The Netmums Podcast, Louise Burke and JB Gill are joined by Boyzone's Shane Lynch and his wife Sheena, from ITV2's The Real Housewives of Cheshire, as they share what family life really looks like behind the scenes while raising two teenage daughters. From earning their own money to finding their own path, Shane and Sheena explain how they're raising their girls to stay grounded – even while growing up in the spotlight. They talk about social media, teenage ambition and why boundaries still matter, even when they're pushed. They also share their honest take on the ‘nepo baby' debate, and the reality behind the assumptions people make about their family life.At the heart of the conversation is that shift so many parents recognise – moving from being hands-on to learning to let go. Sheena describes the hardest part of that transition as “fear”, admitting she's the worrier at home, while Shane takes a more relaxed approach. Together, they reflect on what it really means to trust your teenagers, even when it's not easy. The couple also open up about their relationship, including their separation during lockdown and how they found their way back to each other. It's an honest look at balancing marriage, work and family life, and what it takes to stay connected through change. There are lighter moments too – from raising “girlie girls” and teenage humour to the reality of what comes next, including the thought of becoming empty nesters.Warm, relatable and full of real-life takeaways, this episode is a reminder that raising teenagers isn't about control – it's about guidance, trust and, sometimes, having the courage to let go.In this episode: Raising grounded teens – independence, work ethic and values Their thoughts on the ‘nepo baby' debate Letting go and trusting your teenagers to find their own way Social media, smartphones and setting boundaries Supporting ambition without creating entitlement Parenting girls and navigating teenage dynamics Keeping your relationship strong through change Therapy, communication and modern family life Honest advice for parents – from early years to teens The Real Housewives of Cheshire is back on Tuesdays at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX from next weekRead more expert advice at Netmums.com and join the conversation on social @Netmums.Got a parenting question or dilemma? In this deeply personal and often hilarious episode of Sport & Life, Leon and Dan sit down with Ron Barassi III — son of the late, great Ron Barassi — for a warm, generous, and revealing conversation about the man behind the mythology. From childhood memories of running amok at training and leaving ice creams on Channel 7 seats, to table‑tennis battles where an 82‑year‑old Ron still had the fastest hands in the room, Ron III paints a vivid portrait of a father who was endlessly patient with the public, fiercely competitive, and quietly vulnerable as Alzheimer's crept in.The episode traces the Barassi family's roots back to Guilford, the bust in the town square, the renaming of Brunton Avenue, and the emotional rollercoaster of Melbourne's 2021 premiership — complete with Ron repeatedly asking, “So what are we watching?” as the Demons stormed home in Perth. There's humour, heartbreak, football folklore, and a rare insight into how a family navigated fame, legacy, and the slow fade of a giant of the game. A beautiful tribute, told with honesty, affection, and plenty of Barassi bite.

The no-confidence vote was 241 to zero. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to invoke a state statute compelling sworn testimony. The recall campaign is active. And yet the legal mechanism that's supposed to force accountability may contain the very loophole that lets Sheriff Chris Nanos survive it.This week we look back at the most significant developments in the Nancy Guthrie case. The statute the Board invoked — Arizona Revised Statute § 11-253, a territorial-era provision — triggers removal for non-compliance. Nanos said he'll comply. If he shows up and submits sworn statements — regardless of what those statements contain — the board may have no legal path to remove him under this specific mechanism. County attorneys are currently working through that question. April 7 is when the answer takes shape. Supervisor Matt Heinz called Nanos's 42-year career "fruit of a poison tree" and said his December 2025 deposition testimony — in which Nanos reportedly stated he had never been suspended, despite documented records showing eight suspensions during his time with the El Paso Police Department — is disqualifying. But disqualifying in public opinion and disqualifying under statute are not the same thing. That gap is where this fight will be decided. And while the institutional crisis consumes the investigation's credibility, the person at the center of it deserves to be known for more than a missing poster. Nancy Guthrie was a Kentucky native who fell in love at a basketball game, followed her husband around the world, and built a life in the Arizona desert for five decades. When he died at 49, she was 46 with three children and no career. She went to work at the University of Arizona. She created a program that brought live music into a hospital. She became a leader in public relations. She raised a fighter pilot, a poet, and one of the most recognized journalists in America. She was a 30-year churchgoer whose absence one Sunday morning triggered the investigation the world now watches. That's the Nancy this case is about. Statistics and Realities of Limb Loss

Be-YOU-tiful Adaptive Warrior

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2026 24:48

Life Behind the Numbers of Amputees and Limb Difference     April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, and this year on the podcast, I'm doing something that means so much to me. Instead of focusing only on my own story, I'm opening the door for other amputees to share theirs. That has become a tradition for me over the last five seasons, and this year I'm building the entire month around one powerful theme: Survivors to Warriors. I truly cannot wait for you to hear these interviews, because the young adults I have coming on embody courage, resilience, grit, and hope in a way that will leave you inspired. Their stories are raw, real, and deeply moving, and I'm honored to call each of them my friend. As I prepared for this month, I wanted to begin with something eye-opening: the statistics. Because the truth is, before I became an amputee seven years ago, I hardly ever noticed amputees around me. Maybe once in a while I'd see someone, but it felt rare. Now, just like when you buy a certain car and suddenly see it everywhere, I notice amputees much more often. Even so, the numbers tell me I should be seeing even more. And that is what really stopped me in my tracks. Worldwide, someone loses a limb every thirty seconds. There are tens of millions of people around the world living with limb loss, and what absolutely breaks my heart is that up to ninety percent of them do not have access to prosthetic care. Ninety percent. That number is staggering. And it hits close to home for me because I know what it feels like to have the hope of mobility threatened. Amputee Coalition Statistics used on American Endovascular & Amputation Prevention site, April 25, 2022   Before my elective amputation, I was told everything would be covered. I did my homework because I knew prosthetics were expensive, and I needed the reassurance that if I moved forward with surgery, I would have access to the leg I needed. Then, about a month after surgery, we filed the insurance paperwork and I was denied. I can tell you without hesitation that those four weeks were some of the hardest weeks of my life. In the grand scheme of seven years, it may look like a blink. But in the moment, it felt like everything. I had dreams, goals, and visions of what life could be after amputation, and suddenly an insurance company was telling me no. So I fought. Every single weekday, I called. I kept climbing the ladder, talking to the next person and then the next. I refused to sit back and wait for someone else to decide my future. That season demanded every ounce of emotional and mental strength I had. I had to advocate for myself when I was exhausted, scared, and uncertain. And when I think about the reality that so many people around the world never get that access at all, it is heartbreaking.   Amputee Coalition Statistics used on American Endovascular & Amputation Prevention site, April 25, 2022   The leading causes of limb loss are also telling. Vascular disease, including diabetes, makes up the largest percentage. Trauma is close behind, including accidents and injuries. Then comes cancer, though at a much smaller percentage. My own amputation came after years of surgeries following a karate injury, and eventually I made the deeply personal decision to amputate. Elective amputation is not an easy road, and whether amputation happens in an instant or after years of medical struggle, both journeys carry their own kind of trauma. That's the part people do not always see. Yes, limb loss is physical. It is visible. But the emotional and mental toll can be just as life-altering. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, fear, isolation, and loss of confidence are very real parts of this journey for so many amputees. People may see someone walking on a prosthesis and assume they are doing fine, but they do not always see the inner battle. They do not see the fear of falling, the anxiety of being watched, the struggle to trust your body again, or the grief of trying to figure out who you are now.   Amputee Coalition Statistics used on American Endovascular & Amputation Prevention site, April 25, 2022   Physiopedia: The 5 Stages of Grief and Loss; Axelrod, J. September 26, 2018, https://psychcentral.com/lib/the-5-stages-of-loss-and-grief/   Prime Care, Blog by Eddie Zepeda. Published, January 20, 2025   And then there is phantom pain, something many amputees know all too well. Phantom pain and sensations can range from mild to absolutely overwhelming. It can feel like burning, stabbing, cramping, stinging, or relentless discomfort that comes out of nowhere and hits like a truck. It is one more reminder that the amputee journey is layered, complicated, and often invisible to the outside world. That is exactly why this month matters so much to me. I want these interviews to shine a light on the real lives behind the statistics. I want you to hear from young adults who have endured the unimaginable and are now learning how to rise, rebuild, and become warriors. Their stories deserve to be heard, and I know they will inspire anyone who listens. So as we step into Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, I hope you'll join me. Like, share, subscribe, and most of all, listen. These stories matter. These lives matter. And together, we can bring more awareness, more compassion, and more hope to a community that deserves to be seen. And as always, Be healthy, Be happy, Be YOU!!!   Much love,

Wrestling is part of many people's childhood, and while some grew out of it, there are others who continued watching well into adulthood. Then there are also those who pursue the dream of becoming wrestlers themselves. That's the case with Miles "Lyrical Lightning" Karu, who turned his teenage interest in wrestling into a career. He joins us ahead of Malaysia Pro Wrestling's first event of the year, New Breed 4, to share the path he has taken so far — flexing both his physical and creative muscles — as well as the realities of professional wrestling in this region.Image Credit: Miles Karu, Malaysia Pro Wrestling

From Fulbright Scholar to Everest Filmmaker: Mark Fisher's Life Behind the LensMark Fisher has spent over two decades chasing the world's most extreme moments, from the jagged ridgelines of the Himalayas to the powder-soaked slopes of Alaska, and somehow managing to capture all of it on camera. In this episode, Mark traces the winding path that built Fisher Creative: growing up internationally, discovering climbing and photography in high school, and formative years living in Korea and Germany. A Fulbright scholarship brought him back, where mentorship under commercial photographer Ramish Amru sharpened his eye and his ambition. He spent years guiding and instructing for NOLS while selling his early work to Patagonia, hustling weddings and outdoor brand shoots on the side, before a 2008 Teton Gravity Research expedition to Alaska cracked open the door to professional ski photography. When the Canon 5D Mark II put cinema-quality video in his hands, he ran with it, making Ski Tibet and co-founding Fisher Creative with Eric Daft. Then came Jimmy Chin, Everest, and a project that would define a career: documenting a 10,000-foot ski descent of the north face and along the way unearthing Andrew Irvine's long-lost boot from the mountain's frozen history. Mark also teases what's next: a Netflix film following Everest FKT runners, and new expedition projects already in motion.

In this episode, I sit down with drummer, educator, speaker, and author Rich Redmond, and this conversation goes far beyond the drum set. From the moment we start talking, it's clear that Rich approaches music and life with an uncommon level of purpose, energy, and presence. We talk about why he plays every song like it might be the last one he ever gets to play, how longevity changes your perspective on time, and why being fully present matters just as much offstage as it does behind the kit. Rich reflects on nearly five decades of holding the sticks, what it means to love the work truly, and why every gig still feels like the best day of his life.We dig into Rich's background growing up in Connecticut and Texas, how Texas marching band culture shaped his musical foundation, and why music education in that state continues to produce world-class players. He shares stories from his early training, the classic method books that shaped his hands and mind, and how transcription became a survival skill when he moved to Nashville. Rich breaks down how charting, reading, and preparation quickly opened doors, why the Nashville number system is such a powerful tool, and how learning to create efficient charts can save gigs and careers.A significant focus of the conversation is Rich's belief in using all of your gifts. We talk about his work as an educator, public speaker, author, and podcast host, and how teaching reinforces your own understanding of music, communication, and purpose. Rich explains his CRASH philosophy, commitment, relationships, attitude, skill, and hunger, and how that framework shaped his life, his speaking career, and his approach to helping others succeed, whether they are musicians, students, or corporate audiences. He shares how blending drumming with storytelling keeps audiences engaged, why attention spans are shorter than ever, and how performance can make ideas stick in ways slides never will.We spend time unpacking his long-running work with Jason Aldean, including how studio and live drumming require different mindsets, how records are made efficiently at a high level, and why consistency, trust, and preparation matter more than flash. Rich explains how live drumming is about execution, confidence, and making everyone onstage feel safe, while still delivering energy to the back row. We talk about signature fills, macro rhythms, playing in food groups, and why honoring the record while amplifying the live experience is part of the job.Rich also walks through his teaching philosophy, from Drumtensives and masterclasses to clinics and one-on-one coaching. He explains why reading, time, left-foot independence, stylistic awareness, and charting are non-negotiables, and how meeting students where they are can unlock confidence and growth. We also dive into the soft skills of being a working musician, why being prepared, likable, and open to direction often matters more than chops, and how trust keeps you working long term.We close by talking about health, longevity, curiosity, and why Rich continues to challenge himself creatively through writing, speaking, podcasting, and new musical ideas. It's an inspiring, practical, and honest conversation about building a meaningful career, staying hungry, and using music as a vehicle to lift others along the way.Music from the Episode:Amarillo Sky (Jason Aldean)My Kinda Party (Jason Aldean)The Truth (Jason Aldean)Thank you for listening. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DJ Quinn, author of the book Stick Figures. Dennis ‘DJ' Quinn is a three-time Big Brother / Big Sisters volunteer and assists with mentor programs in the Pierce County WA Juvenile Court system. His honest and humorous writing style came to life during his editing and writing jobs for airline labor unions, lifestyle magazines, and real estate advertising. The second oldest of nine children raised in Helena, MT, he currently resides in Gig Harbor, WA. He is also the author of Raft Island Treasure Hunters, an adventure tale for young readers.   In her book review Carole O'Neill stated: Stick Figures: A Big Brother Remembers is a memoir by D. J. Quinn. As he navigates between time with his Little Brother and his memories of those years, we unravel a happy, sad, guilty, loving, and grateful man who wishes he could have done more for his Little Brother.   Quinn meets Betty who is the foster mother of his potential Little Brother in the caseworker's office. The meeting was set up to allow them to get to know each other and discuss the expectations of both. Mike is not the average candidate the organization tries to match. He didn't start talking until he was four and is in special education. He is an energetic seven-year-old who loves to swim but doesn't like to go to the mall. Within the first few outings, D.J. quickly discovers he and Mike like to talk about Santa, God, showgirls, and speech therapy.   Above all, he is a gamer. Their time together always ended with a look at the calendar to make plans to meet the next time as they drew stick figures to document the time they just spent together. Mike looked forward to those drawings almost as much as the activities they enjoyed. During that time, they often were joined by D.J.'s partner and his Little Brother, Nate. The four of them found swimming off their boat to be one of their favorite pastimes.   During their thirteen-year journey, we follow their intimate true story told with humor and compassion. The twists and turns of their relationship from Mike's time on the run, to his time in prison, and finally to his final days, we laugh, we cry and we applaud D.J. for taking the interest in a young boy who needed help to grow into a man.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author DJ Quinn Website: https://www.DJQuinnAuthor.com Social media: FB: @DJ Quinn Author IG: @djquinnauthor   Purchase Stick Figures on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48IkuWk Ebook: https://amzn.to/4aEqyBR   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? Before "merch" was a mainstream business, Star Trek fandom had Lincoln Enterprises—and behind the scenes was a small, tight-knit team led by Majel Barrett Roddenberry. This week, The Trek Files welcomes Reinelda Estupinian, who started as Rod Roddenberry's nanny in 1974 and later worked directly with Majel beginning in 1980. Reina shares stories from the early convention circuit: selling scripts, collectibles, and Vulcan jewelry to devoted fans while keeping pace with the growing Trek phenomenon. She also reflects on Majel as both a businesswoman and a "force of nature," balancing humor, strength, and an unapologetically bold personality (sometimes delightfully embarrassing to those around her). From Gene Roddenberry's declining health to Majel's final convention appearance in 2008, Reina offers rare, heartfelt insight into the personal and professional lives behind the Roddenberry legacy.

What if you could walk away from corporate pressure, create a career on your own terms, and finally feel like you're making a real difference? That's exactly what Meghan Powers did when she left the skilled nursing world and built her private practice, Gateway to the Rockies Speech Therapy, in Aurora, Colorado.Meghan is a speech-language pathologist who has spent her career helping adults. But, after years working in SNFs, she realized she could no longer align with productivity standards that prioritized numbers over patient care. That frustration became the catalyst for her private practice journey. Meghan's journey into speech therapy began early—she was inspired as a teen while shadowing therapists in a pediatric clinic. She went on to work with both kids and adults before spending nearly a decade in skilled nursing. Over time, however, the corporate-driven demands of that environment took their toll. She was tired of seeing patients rushed through sessions and wanted to provide care based on what her clients truly needed—not what fit into an arbitrary productivity model. So, she took a leap of faith, joined the Start Your Private Practice Program, and launched her own business. At first, Meghan worked part-time at an assisted living facility while building her caseload. Within months, she transitioned fully into private practice—treating clients on her own schedule and building strong community partnerships along the way.In this episode, Meghan shares how she runs Gateway to the Rockies Speech Therapy, serving adults with Parkinson's, stroke, and voice disorders. She's known for functional, patient-centered care and strong collaboration with ENTs and PTs. As a mom, Meghan values the freedom to design her schedule around her son's life, taking family time when she chooses—something her patients wholeheartedly support. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Making the leap from employee to business owner (without overthinking it)Building strong referral relationships through genuine connectionBalancing parenthood, life, and business with intentionAnd why she believes the more of us in private practice, the betterMeghan's story is proof that you can take your clinical skills, your passion, and your values—and turn them into a thriving, fulfilling business. With courage and community support, she created a practice that gives her freedom, flexibility, and impact on her own terms.Ready to create a private practice that gives you the flexibility and fulfillment you deserve—just like Meghan has?
