Flu season in the US is the most intense it’s been in at least 15 years

The U.S. winter virus season is in full force and, by one measure, is the most intense in 15 years. One indicator of flu activity is the percentage of doctor's office visits driven by flu-like symptoms. That number was clearly higher than the peak of any winter flu season since 2009-2010, when a swine flu pandemic hit the nation, according to data posted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of course, other viral infections can be mistaken for flu. But COVID-19 appears to be on the decline, according to hospital data and CDC modeling projections. Available data also suggest another respiratory illness, RSV, has been fading nationally. The flu has forced schools to shut down in some states. The Godley Independent School District, a 3,200-student system near Fort Worth, Texas, was closed for three days after 650 students and 60 staff were out. Jeff Meador, a district spokesman, said the vast majority of illnesses there have been flu, plus some strep throat. He called it the worst flu season he could remember. So far this season, the CDC estimates, there have been at least 24 million flu illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations and 13,000 deaths—including at least 57 children. Traditionally, flu season peaks around February. Overall, 43 states reported high or very high flu activity. Flu was most intense in the South, Southwest and Western states. In Rochester, New York, the flu season has been intense but not necessarily worse than at the peak of other years, said Dr. Elizabeth Murray, a pediatric emergency medicine doctor at the University of Rochester Medical Center. U.S. health officials recommend that everyone six months and older get an annual flu vaccination. To avoid seasonal viruses, doctors say you should avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth because germs can spread that way. You should also wash your hands with soap and water, clean frequently touched surfaces and avoid close contact with people who are sick. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

He worked for 25 years at Universal Limited Art Editions, where he collaborated with numerous artists, including Jasper Johns, Elizabeth Murray, James Rosenquist, Kiki Smith, and Robert Rauschenberg. Currently, he is a collaborative printer at Two Palms working with Mel Bochner, Ellen Gallagher, Chris Offili, Elizabeth Peyton, and Dana Schutz.  He is author of a studio manual on photogravure, as well as Conversations from the Print Studio published by Yale University Press. They talk about Craig's transition to Two Palms and how that studio works outside of the traditional print studio model. Find out about a lifelong interest of Craig's that has resulted in his collection being acquired by the American Museum of Natural History (no, it's not prints), and what band would he most like to join on tour. Zammiello received an MFA from The State University of New York, Stony Brook in 1995. He is currently Adjunct Faculty at the School of the Arts at Columbia University. Hi, I'm Bianca Vinther, the creator of The Pointless Artist. This is a conversation I had with Lindsay McCulloch, American artist and professor of visual arts based in Maryland, USA on Saturday, 28 May 2022. Lindsay comes from a family of artists, where creativity was part of everyday life. In 2005, she received her Master of Fine Arts in painting from Boston University. Nine years later she became Associate Professor of Visual Arts at the Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. In this podcast episode, Lidsay explains the meaning of change, the tension between being a mother and an artist, her artistic development, and the stages of her creative process. She also talks about the female artists who influenced her art, like Elizabeth Murray and Cecily Brown, her sources of inspiration and creativity, and how she deals with artist block. Lindsay's art, as well as her work as a teacher and, more recently, as a protester for women's rights, is a powerful example to emulate – an example of empathy, patience, and strength, of resilience and faith in the power of good and togetherness. Listen to this podcast episode with Lindsay McCulloch and get lots of hope, light, and inspiration for your art! Via The Pointless Artist Blog, I support the creative energy of life and the artists who contribute to transforming this world into a freer, kinder, more inclusive, caring, transparent, and compassionate place to live. I firmly believe in the passion for art, the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences, and the power of personal stories to bring us together. www.thepointlessartist.com

In the mid-1770s, the Earl of Mansfield (1705-1793) commissioned a portrait of his two great-nieces, Elizabeth Murray (1760-1825) and Dido Belle (1761-1804). But it was Elizabeth's name that would be remembered through history, and Dido's would only be rediscovered in the 1990s. In this episode, we discuss her origins, her position in her great-uncles stately home, and how she is portrayed in the only known Neoclassical portrait depicting a black woman and a white woman as equals. What is the canvas of your artistic expression? “Pen and ink,” says the writer. “Wet clay” says a sculptor, “Wood” says another, “Stone” says a third. And then the painters chime in, singing, “Oils,” “Pencils,” “Charcoal,” and “Acrylic” in 4-part harmony. “Film” shouts a cinematographer, “Pixels” shouts another, and the photographers beat a steady rhythm on the lens covers of their cameras. Our own Princess Pennie is of that ancient tribe “The Daughters of Eve” who claim the earth as their canvas. The inheritance of the daughters goes back to the book of Genesis… Do you believe the Bible to be a message from God, or merely the writings of desert nomads? Either way, it is an interesting book. In the second chapter of that first book, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” But evidently, Adam wasn't very good at it, because just three verses later the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone,” and Eve became his partner in the effort. Dozens of centuries later, daughter Elizabeth Murray observed, “Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and the sky as canvas.” Two hundred and fourteen years ago, the poet William Wordsworth added, “Laying out grounds may be considered a liberal art, in some sort like poetry and painting.” 1 One hundred and twenty-two years ago, Sidney Hare said, “Show me a city without parks and boulevards and I will show you a people far behind the times in every way. Parks educate the people in an art equally as grand as the art of painting or sculpture…” 2 In 1941, the immortal John Steinbeck said, “Places are able to evoke moods, as color and line in a picture may capture and warp us to a pattern the painter intended.” 3 Eleven years later, Steinbeck elaborated, “The spring flowers in a wet year were unbelievable. The whole valley floor, and the foothills too, would be carpeted with lupins and poppies. Once a woman told me that colored flowers would seem more bright if you added a few white flowers to give the colors definition. Every petal of blue lupin is edged with white, so that a field of lupins is more blue than you can imagine.” 4 And daughter Shauna Niequist adds, “Use what you have, use what the world gives you. Use the first day of fall: bright flame before winter's deadness; harvest; orange, gold, amber; cool nights and the smell of fire. Our tree-lined streets are set ablaze, our kitchens filled with the smells of nostalgia: apples bubbling into sauce, roasting squash, cinnamon, nutmeg, cider, warmth itself. The leaves as they spark into wild color just before they die are the world's oldest performance art, and everything we see is celebrating one last violently hued hurrah before the black and white silence of winter.” 5 I agree. It is not good for the man to be alone. Thank God for the women in our lives who cause rainbows of color to appear from lumps of cold, brown earth. 6 Roy H. Williams 1 In a letter to Sir George H. Beaumont, Grasmere, (Oct. 17, 1805) 2 Sidney J. Hare, a pioneer in Landscape Architecture, (1897) 3 John Steinbeck, Sea of Cortez, p. 256, (1941) 4 John Steinbeck, East of Eden, p. 4.
