Hostility can happen in many ways. For butches and masc folks there seems to be a disdain from men for existing without the need for the male gaze. Why do so many men (and women sometimes) react with such anger towards people that are just trying to live their lives? In todays episode we discuss why some members of society may struggle with the idea of these lesbians existing in a space that is completely free of the male gaze and creating a space that tries to be totally free of straight, cis men. This week we discuss how to get over speed bumps and obstacles you may face in life. Whether it is in a romantic relationship, a hobby, or something different everyone has had to face an issue at some point in their lives. Overcoming struggles can really break a person down if they are unsure of how to solve the issue. When it comes to LGBTQ topics many are faced with dealing with homophobic families, discrimination in dating, and so much more. Having strong coping skills when it comes to adapting can be key in improving your journey to self improvement rather than quitting when things get difficult. As much as people don't want to admit it, there is phobia in the community and lots of it. Dating and even just making friends as a person who identifies as anything that isn't Lesbian or Gay can sometimes be met with prejudice, stigma, and more. In this episode we discuss phobia within the community, with dating, why it sucks and how to deal with getting past these stigmas in the community. In order to grow and become better as a whole we need the strength of the ENTIRE LGBTQ+ community, not just some of it. So, yes, that means we need to stop gatekeeping the queer community! While we are starting to see more representation for queer folx in media there are still plenty of issues surrounding representation. One such issue is "queerbaiting" or the act of making a character or show seem LGBTQ+ when it really isn't in order to capture more viewers from the community. There are a lot of shows that do it and it is incredible frustrating and makes queer people seem like a disposable character or joke. This episode discusses the issues surrounding queerbaiting and gives some ideas of shows to watch that DON'T queer bait.If you found this episode helpful be sure to subscribe for more! The History of the term QUEER - How queer became the term we know today. Is the term queer really all that offensive? Is queer controversial? To some they feel the term queer is a sense of empowerment. For others they refuse to acknowledge its use or existence altogether. I personally think queer is empowering. A term that originally came about to mean anything out of the ordinary, evolved into a slang term of hate and homophobia. Now this term is seen by the LGBT community as a term of pride. The reclaiming of the term started with the gay rights movement. Many people in the lgbt rights movement saw this as a way to fight back. Some have reclaimed the term QUEER as a form of retaliation. The LGBTQ, lesbian, gay, etc community is still at odds about this term at times so I explain more in depth the history surrounding this term. You can choose for yourself if you want to use it or not.Get the Queer History guide with even more helpful information on Queer, its history, and what you can do if you think you are queer in this post here!If you found this episode helpful be sure to subscribe! Navigating a queer life is tough enough as it is. What do you do if your parents are homophobic on top of things? This question gets sent to me a lot so I decided I would devote an episode to try to help out those in need of some advice on this very difficult topic. This episode touches on the topic of dealing with homophobic parents, how to test the waters to see if it's safe to come out to them, what to do if you are at risk of being disowned, and ways to plan to tell them.
