Welcome to Season of Aquarius, our book club season on Book Talk for BookTok, a fantasy and romantasy podcast centered on thoughtful discussion and literary analysis. This season is created for readers who want more than quick takes and star ratings, offering space to explore how and why stories work on the page. This is not a traditional book review podcast; it's an analysis and conversation. Each week, we share flash literary analysis that examines themes, authorial intent, character arcs, symbolism, world-building, and key plot devices. Our discussions move beyond initial impressions to unpack narrative choices, emotional resonance, and the craft behind fantasy and romantasy storytelling. We aim to bridge academic literary insight with the modern reading experience shaped by BookTok and online reading communities. This week, we discuss As Many Souls as Stars by Natasha Siegel. Sapphic Adolescent Girls in Irish Young Adult Fiction: Queering Girlhood (Routledge, 2025) is the first sustained critical analysis of the representation of sapphic adolescent protagonists in contemporary Irish Young Adult (YA) literature. Ten YA novels published between 2017 and 2023 by both well-established and emerging Irish female authors are examined, analysing sapphic characters to demonstrate how Irish YA literature can transform and re-imagine sapphic literary representations. This book offers a critical evaluation of how lesbianism and bisexuality have been introduced into Irish YA literature, while also addressing the significance of racism, religion, violence against women and girls, friendships, and parental abandonment in shaping queer identities. This study is ideal for postgraduates and academics in the fields of Irish Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, and Queer Studies, as well as students interested in YA literature, comparative literature, and contemporary literature. Do you have any thoughts or ideas about the show? Send us a text! Hello Creators,January doesn't care about your calendar. The days are short, the air bites, and all those loud resolutions feel out of tune with a body that still wants to hibernate. We lean into that truth with a slower, kinder approach to creative momentum, and then dim the lights for a lush reading of Carmilla, Chapter Six, where devotion blurs into danger, and a silent figure stands at the foot of the bed.We start by resetting expectations for the new year, tracing why many cultures once marked a renewal in spring and how that rhythm can help modern creatives. Instead of sprinting into 2026, we map small, low-friction habits. So if you're ever burned out by February, this is your permission to pace yourself without guilt. Then we settle into the velvet unease of Carmilla. The chapter unfolds with tender politeness, unspoken vows, and the unsettling promise that love can be both shelter and threat. You'll hear the father's protective refusal, Carmilla's cryptic confessions, and the narrator's night ritual of lit candles and locked doors, followed by a dream sequence: a monstrous cat, a stinging bite, and a woman in a dark dress.Curl up, press play, and let the mood carry you. If the show resonates, follow us on social media, share it with a friend who's pushing too hard, and leave a quick review.Sweet dreams,Florence xSupport the showOur Links: Subscribe to our Newsletter! www.sleeplesscreativespodcast.co.uk Our producer Instagram Linkedin Do you want to feature as one of our Guest Readers in your own special episode? In the Regency Era, reputation was all many working-class women had. When Edinburgh schoolteachers Marianne Woods and Jane Pirie were accused of sapphic behaviour by their student Jane Cumming, they lost everything. So they decided to sue their accuser's wealthy grandmother for libel. The legal case, Pirie and Woods vs Cumming Gordon, only fanned the flames of the scandal. Their relationship grows through vulnerability, humor, and genuine emotional connection, making their love story feel both tender and real. These books shine in their character work, exploring identity, family, and self-acceptance alongside romance. Clever, guarded, and never fully transparent, she makes the narrative feel like a chess match where every move could be a lie. The romance simmers beneath schemes and secrets, adding emotional tension without overpowering the plot.If you love fairy-tale retellings with teeth, sapphic fantasy, morally complex protagonists, and stories that thrive on subterfuge, this one is absolutely worth your time.✨ Tune in for my spoiler-free breakdown of what worked, why Odile is such a compelling lead, and who will enjoy this magical, twist-heavy retelling. In this week's episode of Book Talk for BookTok, Jac and Amy sit down with Natasha Siegel, author of As Many Souls as Stars, a hauntingly beautiful sapphic romantasy inspired by the Faustus legend. Together, they explore how Natasha's background in historical fiction, romance, and Jewish-Danish heritage shaped her richly imagined world of love, loss, and the meaning of the soul. Through the lenses of literary analysis and character psychology, we unpack: How Natasha's research for Solomon's Crown and The Faithless informed her fantasy world-building The subversion of the Faustian Bargain trope and why Cybil's resistance makes the story unforgettable Why sapphic romance was essential—not optional—for the emotional truth of Miriam and Cybil's journey The book's exploration of humanity, identity, and transformation Which side characters Natasha wishes she could have written more of (and what might come next) If you love sapphic fantasy, queer romance, and emotionally charged romantasy with literary depth, this conversation is for you. As Many Souls as Stars combines feminine power, moral complexity, and lush romantic tension, making it a must-read for fans of T. Kingfisher, Samantha Shannon, and Alix E. Harrow. About the Guest: Natasha Siegel is a London-based author of historical fiction, fantasy, and romance. Her debut, Solomon's Crown, was a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice. Her latest, As Many Souls as Stars, reimagines the Faustus myth through a sapphic lens, blending moral temptation with tender humanity.
