    Autumn Mix 2012

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 16, 2022 120:12

Autumn is my favorite season! I love how beautiful and melancholy it is, as the sunlight hits lower and lower with each passing day, and the leaves on the trees burn brighter colors as everything DIES.  Musically, this is when my taste turns to pastoral IDM, gorgeous post-rock, and amber-hued electronica. I made this mix while living in Brooklyn; my first fall with our dog Tycho. I was inspired by our walks through Prospect Park. This is not a typical DJ mix, as there is very little beat-matching. Instead, I layered ambient textures in key, with very minimal effects to create a journey that flows together harmoniously. As soon as I finished it I put it on my headphones and went on an afternoon stroll through the park and listened through the whole thing. I recommend doing the same! Be prepared for introspection and tears LOL Tracklist: 1. Röyksopp - …And the Forest Began to Sing 2. Tycho – Dive (Memoryhouse Remix) 3. Boards of Canada – Satellite Anthem Icarus 4. The latest installment of my re-released seasonal mix series is Escapade, which was originally released as Summer Mix 2012. It was the second mix I ever made; created in Virtual DJ before I got my first controller Summer for me is all about enjoying the sunshine and hot weather with friends and some feel-good house and disco jams. I was heading out to Fire Island with some friends and I wanted a mix that we could listen to poolside during the day. The vibe here is very nu-disco/house in a tropical poolside paradise fantasyland, but also funky enough to dance to; serving up thick bouncy bass lines, sparkly arpeggios, island percussion, and dreamy fun pop vocals. ☀️

Originally released in June 2013 as Spring Nights 2013, I recorded this set on my laptop using Virtual DJ right before I got my first DJ controller. It was part of my Seasonal Mix Series as a nighttime counterpart to Spring 2012, which is now called Emerge. I wanted this mix to have the same springtime vibe as Emerge, but more geared for the dance floor. I fell in love with DJs and DJ culture in the mid to late 90s through Progressive House and then Trance around the turn of the millennium. Sasha & Digweed, BT, Nick Warren / Way Out West, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Underworld and Orbital are all reasons why I wanted to be a DJ. I went to school at Boston University, and lived behind the Citgo Sign just a short walk from Landsdowne St, the major club district. While friends of mine were going to frat parties and drinking, I was going out to see my favorite DJs play sets at megaclubs at the height of trance and progressive house. I wanted to make a mix that captured the same Spring vibe of energy and positivity, while also connecting the dots between some of my favorite older tracks from the 90s with more current (in 2013) progressive house sounds. The end result is a neon colored mix that oscillates between beautiful chill progressive house and ecstatic emotional bangers

I love this track Skyscrapers by Nina Kraviz! The original version is around 133 bpm and all the remixes took it up into 140 bpm techno territory. I really wanted a slower, deep house / tech house remix that kept the beautiful vocals intact. I wanted a version I could play out at gigs, so I created an edit myself. =) I used a track by Josh Butler called Satisfy for some of the underlying loops to flesh it out. This edit is also from my forthcoming mix called Psychonaut, which is coming soon DM me if you'd like a download to add to your crates for playing out

I recently had the huge honor of DJing my first ever wedding for two friends of mine; Jim & Matt! I traveled to Berkeley, California for a super fun weekend, and attended a beautiful ceremony held at a gorgeous countryside ranch in Point Reyes Station. Surrounded by the picaresque landscape, psychedelic art, and wonderful wedding attendees, I was asked to prepare a set of happy and fun disco house. As a DJ, I love picking music to fit the mood and vibe of the setting, and I wanted to create an unforgettable night of joyous music for the grooms for this momentous occasion. The vibe of the tracks I picked all feel joyous, and celebratory, with the theme of celebrating love, desire, and the spirit of disco. Given that it was a wedding, I assumed most people in attendance would want to hear recognizable tracks; and I got a lot of (very ON POINT) requests (Hence 100% Pure Love shows up twice lol). But I was surprised at how many people were more than willing to get on board with tracks that are not immediately recognizable radio hits. One of my favorite moments of a night that was filled with magic, was when the officiator of the wedding, a fierce and funny woman in her 90s, set down her wine glass so should could properly get down to Tensnake's Coma Cat on the dance floor. The set includes two drag numbers by the beautiful Zohara Platinum, as well as two funny and heartfelt wedding toasts by Richard and Carlisle. I had an absolute blast playing this wedding for Jim & Matt, and was so honored to be included in their special day! I hope you enjoy listening

Emerge is the first DJ mix I ever made! I put this mix together and recorded it back in the Spring of 2012, before I ever had any DJ equipment. I made this mix using Virtual DJ on my laptop. I was experimenting with different ways I could put tracks together without necessarily beat-matching. As such, about a third of this mix I put together as a mixtape where the tracks just flow seamlessly into one another. The music I listen to changes with the seasons, so I had the idea that I would teach myself how to DJ by making a series of seasonal mixes that would reflect how my taste in music evolves over the course of the year to coincide with the weather. Spring to me sounds hopeful; full of life and energy. I picked tracks that sound bright, colorful, and bursting with energy, like seeds exploding and growing into flowers. I wanted this mix to capture the feeling of fresh renewal; new life, new energy, cells multiplying, organisms growing, flowers opening into the sun...

Much like my Meltdown set from last year, I loved the flow of the it, but the quality of the recording wasn't optimal. So I polished it up a bit, switched out a couple tracks I had played out at other gigs recently, and re-recorded it. Thanks to the pandemic, nightlife is currently on an indefinite pause. I had no idea then that this set would be one of the last times I would play for the foreseeable future. So I put on a little intro and outro on the mix as an ode to clubland... hopefully we'll all get to return and get back to dancing soon. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy Climax. :) Tracklist: 1. Instinct represents the beginning of a new chapter for me; It's a bit leaner and meaner than previous mixes. I wanted to change up my usual format of 2-3 hour sets and begin to put out shorter, more succinct mixes. While I love putting together my longer, more conceptual sets, this shorter format allows me to explore more precise ideas and push my interest in different genres. My goal is to put out a new shorter 45-60 minute mix hopefully every month or so. With Instinct I wanted to create a snapshot of where I'm at musically right now. It's big, dark, and propulsive tech house and techno, but still has a groovy and psychedelic feel to it. Enjoy! Tracklist: 1. Never Leave The Rave (Jeff Dority Edit): Josh Butler - Never Leave ft. Meltdown

In March 2019 I had the pleasure of returning to Seattle for the first time since moving away to DJ at an amazingly fun party called Meltdown at Club Contour, thrown by my buddy Alfonso. The recording sound was low tho, so I've re-recorded it with nearly the exact same tracklist and transitions but with a couple extra tracks I felt I 'missed' to fill it out a bit. DJ Alfonso Tan kicked the party off with a killer house set, that filled the dance floor with great energy and bouncin vibes, and handed it over to me with an absolute banger track that was pure FIRE. I couldn't have asked for a better lead in, and I took over at 12:30am in total peak-time energy mode. My vision for this set was very clear; this was my first time playing in Seattle in a year, so it felt like a homecoming for me. It was going to be the first time seeing a lot of my friends there and I really wanted to showcase how my sound has evolved in that time. I had a really busy travel season this past winter, playing some really fun parties in San Diego, San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, and LA over the course of just 6 weeks. I really wanted to play some of my favorite tracks from this season, and also hit a few new discoveries along the way. I came in with 100 tracks in a crate, with 30 faves, which is more concise than my usual gig prep. I'm glad I took this approach because I was super happy with how the set unfolded! I start in peak-time mode with very high energy and some fierce vocals. Around 1am I wanted to take things into deeper, sexier territory, so the next hour gets progressively deeper with some groovy basslines, funky percussion, and some more subdued vocals/samples. The crowd responded with a lot of close, sexy dancing, which is what I live for when I'm playing! Then I took a brief dip into some old school house classics right around last call at 2am to bring the energy back up a bit. I wanted to make sure everyone knew that the party was gonna go strong until 3am, so the last hour I brought back some high energy bangers to keep everyone dancing until closing time. I still had a strong dance floor holding it til close, and I love a good emotional end to a great party, so I closed things off with two of my favorite euphoric/tearjerker tracks of the moment. This trip to Seattle to play Meltdown was such a wonderful experience, catching up with my friends and playing music I've been loving lately. It reminded me of everything I love about DJing and how lucky I am to share what I am passionate about, that brings me and others such joy. I wanted to capture this feeling in a recording and I'm really happy with how it came out. Hope you enjoy it too! If you like it, please considering sharing it. Brace yourself for 2 hours of high-energy, big-room house, tech-house, and tribal beats, because this one bangs HARD. ;) It's been about two years and 70-something gigs since the last time I recorded a live set, and my approach to prepping for a gig has change quite a bit since then. When I played Flight back in Oct '16, I had my set planned out to a T; the track order set and every transition mapped out. That was the last time I ever did that. My philosophy now is to play to the party that's happening- I pick tracks on the fly and just play what feels right that will fit the energy of the dance floor. This set is me just jamming to a crowd that was ready to set it off from the get go, and this party was an absolute blast to play. :) My idea for this set was pretty simple: I wanted BIG, high-energy tracks with heavy basslines, drums for days with lots of funky percussion textures, and some fun psychedelic dubby effects. I came in with about 100 tracks, 20 faves that I really wanted to hit, and just played what felt right in the moment. I'm so glad I hit record, because I'm really happy with how this set turned out! Summer is here and I'm bringing the heat with XXXtasy - an intoxicating journey filled with ecstatic grooves, trippy tribal beats, sexy vocals, and blissful melodies - all designed to take you to a higher state of consciousness. The inspiration for this mix came about in February when I was preparing to play a big party in LA. I was listening to a lot of old school Deep Dish remixes at the time and I was really inspired by that old school progressive / tribal sound. I was super into progressive house around the turn of the millennium- Deep Dish, Sasha & Digweed, BT, Nick Warren, etc... all those DJs are basically the reason I wanted to become one as well. I wanted to take that uplifting, melodic style and update it- the term I thought of was “Ecstasy House.” The vibe I wanted to go for with this party was super groovy, sexy, feel-good jams but with a modern twist with more psychedelic, dubby, tribal elements. Of course, this is just where the idea for this mix started. As with all of my mixes, it began with one idea, and evolved into something else entirely. It’s hard to put into words everything this set means to me; so many other parts of my life have been incorporated into it now. I think they best way to describe this mix is as a travelogue, encapsulating the last 9 months or so if my life. I started traveling a lot for gigs last year, and since then I’ve played parties all over the country. Every city is a new adventure, filled with amazing new people. DJing is a total adrenaline rush, and my life became punctuated by these very overwhelming “ecstatic” moments. I’ve played about 3/4ths of these tracks out at some point recently, and most of these tracks have an awesome memory associated with it from one of my adventures. It’s been an emotional ride, to say the least. I wanted to create a mix that captured that overwhelming mix of emotions. If my last mix Voodoo was about the dehumanizing aspects of modern technology, then this mix is about the opposite; human connection and its many wonderful forms, and finding states of absolute ecstasy through music, or dancing, or love, or sex, or drugs... or perhaps all of the above lol In many ways, this set feels like a twin counterpart to my Free Your Mind mix from last summer. But where that set was inspired by a psychedelic trip, this mix is modeled after the intense rush of sensations brought on by ecstasy. XXXtasy comes on strong and goes through several rolling peaks before mellowing out into a groovy state of bliss... Enjoy the ride! XXX 1. (Intro Vox) Lindstrom – Didn’t Know Better 2. What kind of Voodoo do you do?? I'm conjuring up some deep dark sexy tribal techno magic with this new VOODOO mix... Download/Stream it here! I initially had the idea for this mix last June when I played a party in Vancouver. There was a transition in my set where I mixed this amazing tribal progressive remix of Bedtime Stories from the 90s into a brand new dark, funky, robotic techno track I had just found. It's one of those transitions where two wildly different tracks could not fit more perfectly together. I absolutely live for those moments. I knew there was something more there to explore, so I kept that idea in the back of my head. Over the course of the next 6 months, these two styles: deep tribal house and funky robo-techno would become pretty prevalent in my sets. Much like Free Your Mind, this mix isn't reflective of one particular set or party. Rather, it's a journey that connects the dots between these two styles and has a really intense progression over the course of it's runtime. The sexy, seductive, deep tribal house vibes slowly co-mingle with more and more robotic textures until suddenly you realize you're bangin' it out to some wicked techno. I typically use techno very sparingly in my live sets, but I've been wanting to try my hand at it in a recorded mix. I still feel the need to build up to it, and provide ample breaks in intensity, but I really love how the more techno back-half of this mix turned out. The "storyline" of this mix is bit abstract to be honest, but a lot of things served as inspiration: the seductive and irresistible power of technology, smartphone addiction, the social media hive mind, chat apps, Blade Runner 2049 and the movie Her, Black Mirror, and the creeping feeling of dread that all of this rapidly advancing tech may be slowly turning you into a robot. So this mix serves as a friendly reminder to hang on to all that makes us human. Let's continue to gather in dark spaces and get half naked and dance to sexy tribal beats and express our sexuality in REAL LIFE before we all just become chat bot nodes in the hive mind posting nudes and poking each other for attention. +++ Turn On — Tune In — Drop Aciiiiid House +++ Free Your Mind, a new mind-altering Pure Noise experience is here! Reality is such a total bummer lately, am I right? Despite the real world being a seemingly endless trashscape of absurdities and atrocities (nuclear war and nazis, anyone?), I'm kinda having the best summer ever. And that's because I've been doing what I love the most, playing and sharing music, while surrounded by some really fucking awesome friends. I've DJ'd at some amazingly fun parties this summer, and if you've caught any of my sets, you may have noticed that one of the prevailing vibes I'm really feeling lately is this really groovy, trippy, neon jungle tribal house thing. Basically, if it has dubbed-out bongos and birdsong, I'm suuuper into it. While I have played most of these tracks out this summer at some point or other, this set here isn't reflective of any one particular party I played. Instead I took that vibe and expanded it into an psychedelic music experience that (at least in my mind) follows a highly conceptual and slightly ridiculous storyline involving psychedelic drugs, jungle shamans, wormholes, time-travel, ancient Egyptians, extra-dimensional mystics, and post-human ravers in the future. The mix is a journey in every sense, and I wanted it to unfold with the kind dream logic you experience in a psychedelic trip. The ecstatic peaks come in rolling waves, giving way to hypnotic trance-inducing grooves, with a few surprising turns along the way. One of the defining characteristics of Pisces is that we create internal fantasy worlds that we escape to when the real world doesn't live up to our expectations. This mix definitely feels like a product of that instinct in me; putting together this beautiful dreamworld was a necessary escape from the ugly and horrifying new world we are finding ourselves in. Now, here it is for you to explore! I hope you enjoy your time in here as much as I have. :) Tracklist: 1. Intro: Cut Copy - Free Your Mind Intro 2. DJ Sotofett - Dripping for 97 Mix 3. For those of you who like it hard & rough... my new mix WOOF is here! Over two hours of dark and aggressive house, tech-house, techno, and a few of my favorite 90's classics. Since moving to Seattle a few months ago, I have become one of the regular DJs at the Eagle, and have played about 10-12 of their parties now, many of them fetish/theme parties. It has been an awesome few months with some amazingly fun parties, and this venue has given me total freedom to explore and play anything I want, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I tailor my sets with music that suits the venue and party vibe, and what I love most about playing at The Eagle is that is has given me a great outlet to explore my darker, more aggressive side. WOOF was put together from my favorite tracks and sequences from these gigs, and perfectly captures the vibe I've been going for: dark, sexy, rough, high-energy, aggressive, totes masc bro & super gay, with a few favorite throw-backs to my younger, clubbing days. Regarding the length, WOOF is my longest mix, which can be daunting... but considering my usual sets are 4-4.5 hours, this actually felt kinda short for me... hahaha. By my estimation I've played around 300 tracks in the past couple months, and editing it down to about 30 was hard y'all! Also, I wanted to showcase what a night at The Eagle is like when I'm playing. WOOF is what I play from about 11:30 to close... all peak-time and high-energy, while still exploring different moods and genres and paced-out with some great climaxes and breaks. Also, It's a great gym / workout mix... I mean, who doesn't like to go to the gym for 3 hours? LOL... Summer's around the corner guys, put this on your phone and GET IT. #beastmode =) Tracklist: Hercules & Love Affair - Controller (Tuff City Kids Remix) Pirupa - Fleshy Bleep / DJ Hell - I Want You (The Hacker Remix) CamelPhat - Reverse It Carl Cox - Ohh Baby (David Tort’s Dub Tech Mix) Demarzo - Get Right The Knife - We Share Our Mother’s Health (Trentemoller Remix) Danny Serrano - Coffee & Milk Christian Piers - Detachment Joe Goddard - Music in the Answer (Hot Since 82 Remix) The Golden Boy - Egyptian Lover (Latmun Remix) The Juan Maclean - Can You Ever Really Know Somebody Brassica - Wryders BT - Love Peace and Grease (BT’s Puma Fila 12” Mix) DJ Dozia - Pop Culture (KiNK Remix) G.M. - Star People (Forthright Club Mix) Joeski - Blackbird (Gorgon City Remix) Leftfield - Little Fish (Dense & Pika Remix) Filterheadz - Los Hijos del Sol (Filterheadz 2015 Mix) Nicole Moudaber - You Love Picks Me Up Everything But The Girl - Temperamental (Hex Hector & Max Quayle Remix) Leftwing & Kody - Malinke Tiga - Louder Than A Bomb (Dense & Pika Remix) Royksopp - I Had This Thing (Wolfgang Gartner Remix) Alan Fitzpatrick - For An Endless Night (Jel Ford Remix) Bjork - Pagen Poetry (Alex Del Rio Remix) PQM - You Are Sleeping (PQM meets Luke Chable Vocal Pass) Green Velvet - Flash (Nicky Romero Remix) Golden Boy with Miss Kittin - Rippin Kitten (X-Press 2 Late Night Homicide Vocal Mix) Wongo - Klaxon Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Armand’s Star Trunk Funkin’ Mix) Science Dept. - Repercussion Sunscreem - Pressure

Visitors, the latest installment in my ongoing After Hours mix series, is a cinematic journey through cosmic deep house and otherworldly techno. I initially started this mix with an idea to make a laid-back house mix with an autumnal vibe. Along the way though, it become something very different, something a bit stranger, and I just decided to push it further in that direction. The vibe here is a really interesting mix of warm, almost jazzy deep house, with a lot of otherworldly techno sounds swirling around. I mostly stayed away from tracks with straightforward vocals, and instead layered tracks together that had strange vocalizations, almost like aliens trying to learn our language. I saw the film Arrival while I was making this, and it really had a strong influence on how the mix turned out. I began to think of this mix as a movie; it definitely has the feeling of taking a journey, with many interesting plot twists along the way. Buckle up and enjoy the ride! Tracklist 1. Here is my set from Flight at The Liquor Store in Portland on October 21st, 2016. Flight is an awesome house & techno party held downstairs at The Liquor Store, and I can't even begin to describe how much fun I had playing this party. I went on at 11:30, and the crowd was AMAZING; full of energy, and ready to get down. I was actually a little nervous that some of the techno was going to be a little too much, but they definitely got on board! I had a very specific vibe in mind when I was putting together this set: groovy house and bangin techno, bangin house and groovy techno, all with sleek, cool textures, and an uplifting and energetic pacing. Download/Stream Spectres of the Future, a spooky new after hours mix by Pure Noise. It's party time at the Haunted Mansion, and all the ghosts are ready to get down! My new DJ mix is a deep, dark, spooky, beautiful, strange, and funky After Hours mix that I made for the dark seasons... the theme of this mix is ghosts, and has a mysterious/spooky/dreamy vibe. There’s definitely a sonic theme to all the tracks I picked: spooky and sad synth melodies, weird atonal noise hovering around the edges, creepy voices whispering in the background, haunting strings, dramatic breakbeats, and some sassy-ass fucking cymbals. I wanted to make it ghostly, but still funky enough to dance to. Enjoy! Tracklist 1. Intro: LDR – Burnt Norton / Nicolas Jaar – Spectres of the Future 2. Download / Stream Luminous Chaos - a bright, sparkling, epic new DJ mix by Jeff Dority. Luminous Chaos is loosely based around the concept of light. It opens with a sunrise, and climaxes with a crazy neon rave, and over the course of two hours runs through a spectrum of colors and emotions. It is bursting with layers of beautiful melodies and textures. It is maximalist and melodramatic and unapologetically pretty. I hope you enjoy it! Tracklist: 1. Intro: Underworld – Capa’s Last Transmission Home / A Guy Called Gerald – The Universe 2. 0rbit-al – Belfast 3. Blondes – Elise 4. Dave DK – Halma 5. Lone – Once in a While (Midland Remix) 6. Outro: Manual - Glide So how do you make a DJ mix based on the concept of light? When I was picking tracks, I was focused all on color and texture. The mix moves through a lot of genres, from ambient electronica to golden-hued house, from club bangers to rave-y breakbeats, modern progressive house to pounding techno… but there’s a sonic theme that ties them all together. All of the tracks have elements that remind me of light: sparkling high-end arpeggios, twinkling bells, synths that pulse and shimmer, and vocals that refract and echo in the ether, as if shot through a prism. A mix of all bright sounding tracks would become tiresome though, so I wanted to avoid getting stuck in one mood. The overarching ‘storyline’ of the mix is a journey from light into darkness and back. The brightness of the beginning and end is offset by the darker, more melancholy midsection, and speaks to the theme of light, positivity, and getting through dark times. I dunno, I’ve been doing a lot of yoga lately LOL The light in me honors the light in you. Namaste.
