Zachary Lubin is a Chicago based DJ. He has been DJing and producing electronic music for nearly thirty years. Zachary's DJ sets and productions span a wide variety of styles- from techno and electro to house and soul/disco. He is not only influenced by great teachers and influencers in the music scene, but other major influences include art, architecture, industry, science-fiction films, and urban decay. Zachary Lubin also runs his own label Obvio Records. The label was founded in 1982 as a reggae label by his father. Obvio is now a channel for eclectic electronic musical experiments focusing on concepts and innovation. Aside from his own material on Obvio, Zachary has released on Jeff Mills' sub-label of Axis Records 6277, Modularz, Kimochi, Nighttripper, UntilMyHeartStops, and Liebe Detail, among others. Helping me Draw The Line this week is my guest, Joely who comes from Los Angeles.. Joely's been DJ-ing for 4 years. She has dedicated this mix to a friend and co-founding partner of #NXT_Entertainment. Jarin Love decided this world was not for her and tragically ended her life in April, just 3 days after NXT Entertainment's first event. Two of the tracks are borrowed from that set as they remind Joely so much of Jarin, and they are the Victor Ruiz tracks. Like her name, Jarin was all love, a big part of the LA underground dance movement, very talented, hardworking and supportive of others. What kind of Voodoo do you do?? I'm conjuring up some deep dark sexy tribal techno magic with this new VOODOO mix... Download/Stream it here! I initially had the idea for this mix last June when I played a party in Vancouver. There was a transition in my set where I mixed this amazing tribal progressive remix of Bedtime Stories from the 90s into a brand new dark, funky, robotic techno track I had just found. It's one of those transitions where two wildly different tracks could not fit more perfectly together. I absolutely live for those moments. I knew there was something more there to explore, so I kept that idea in the back of my head. Over the course of the next 6 months, these two styles: deep tribal house and funky robo-techno would become pretty prevalent in my sets. Much like Free Your Mind, this mix isn't reflective of one particular set or party. Rather, it's a journey that connects the dots between these two styles and has a really intense progression over the course of it's runtime. The sexy, seductive, deep tribal house vibes slowly co-mingle with more and more robotic textures until suddenly you realize you're bangin' it out to some wicked techno. I typically use techno very sparingly in my live sets, but I've been wanting to try my hand at it in a recorded mix. I still feel the need to build up to it, and provide ample breaks in intensity, but I really love how the more techno back-half of this mix turned out.
