What are practical strategies to avoid overload and exhaustion in today's digital world? What norms can organizations create for tool usage, and how can finding offline activities that provide a mental contrast to digital work?Paul Leonardi is the Duca Family Professor of Technology Management at UC Santa Barbara, a consultant and speaker on digital transformation and the future of work, and an author of several works. His latest book is called Digital Exhaustion: Simple Rules for Reclaiming Your Life.Greg and Paul discuss the complementary nature of his two most recent books: the first focuses on harnessing digital tools, and the second on mitigating the overwhelm they can cause. They also explore teaching technology management, including the importance of understanding technology's impact on people and organizational processes. Paul explains the 30% rule, emphasizing the need to understand digital tools well enough to use them effectively. They also explore the concept of digital exhaustion, the subject of his most recent book, its symptoms, and how to manage it, both at work and in daily life. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:How can we reduce exhaustion?41:29: One easy way of reducing our exhaustion is to match the sort of complexity of the task that we are trying to do with the affordances or the capabilities of the technology. And I say match, not over exceed, because we also have the problem where, like me, I am sure you have been in many, many meetings that should have just been an email, that there is not the need. And so what we have done in that situation is we have overstimulated people, right, in a setting with, you know, 15 other folks, and we have taken an hour out of their day and maybe the travel time to get there. And that has created other avenues for exhaustion when, if we had just perceived this information via email, we could not have had the meeting. So you do not want to overmatch, you just want to like match to the complexity of the task. And that is the key to reducing our exhaustion. It's not just distraction that exhausts us18:28: I think we have failed to look at how it is not just being distracted that is a problem, but it is the act of switching itself across all of these different inputs really is a significant source of our exhaustion.Inference is a big driver of exhaustion32:45: Inference is really a big driver of exhaustion. And I would say the place that it most shows up, although not exclusively, is in our social media lives. Because, of course, people are curating their lives in terms of what they post, whether that is LinkedIn or TikTok or Instagram, that does not really matter. And we are constantly not only making inferences of them, but what I find is that we are also very often making inferences about ourselves because we see a past record of all the things that we wrote and all of the things that we posted. And then we are also making inferences of what we think other people think about us based on all the things that we post.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Human MultitaskingTask SwitchingFatigueUnsiloed Podcast Episode 612: Rebecca HindsGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at UC Santa BarbaraPaulLeonardi.comWikipedia ProfileLinkedIn ProfileGuest Work:Amazon Author PageDigital Exhaustion: Simple Rules for Reclaiming Your LifeThe Digital Mindset: What It Really Takes to Thrive in the Age of Data, Algorithms, and AIExpertise, Communication, and OrganizingMateriality and Organizing: Social Interaction in a Technological WorldCar Crashes without Cars: Lessons About Simulation Technology and Organizational Change from Automotive DesignGoogle Scholar Page Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Episode Summary: In a world where constant notifications, curated feeds, and digital pressure shape how we see ourselves, many are left feeling more anxious, isolated, and distracted than ever. We long for a life that is full of deep connection with God, ourselves, and others. And yet we’ve become programmed to seek peace, contentment, and happiness from our phones. Deep down, we know this isn’t how we were created to live. As endless scrolling leaves us feeling anxious, depressed, distracted, ad alone, we realize our true needs can’t be met by turning to social media in every slow, mundane moment. If you feel like your digital life could use a reset, this episode is for you. Quotables from the episode: Social media can so easily steal our peace, distort our identity, and drain the joy God intends for us, especially when we are already struggling with anxiety, insecurity, or loneliness. Cultures do not collapse because they are evil they collapse because they are exhausted by their own metaphors. And the de-evolving radically regressive wanna be-fascism mixed with idiocracy American hating Trump regime - whether one speaks of the leader whose been a lifelong criminal, the cult, or the psychic weather that produced it, is best understood as the right-wing American Empire in a state of neurological overload.Empire is a kind of hallucination. It's a story a society tells itself about permanence, inevitability, and divine exemption from the laws of nature and real history. America's story of building an empire through slaughtering indigenous people's, has in many ways since been expanded in many bad ways without limit. Novelty channeled into material accumulation. But real novelty belongs to mind and meaning, not to strip malls and derivatives.Oligarchic criminals are not the cause. They are the symptom. They are what happens when the operating system of an empire caters only to the top of the socio economic hierarchy. What we are witnessing is cultural feedback failure. The corpotized institutions no longer metabolize reality. Light spirituality, higher thoughts, the arts, the sciences are all ignored and or degraded, myth replaces reason, and power becomes performative - pure spectacle. This is classic late-empire behavior. Rome did it. Spain did it. Britain did it. They all mistook domination for destiny. These insight sub-episodes are mirrored on our primary YouTube channel which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/@NilesHeckman/videos

Same as it ever was... We're letting the days go by as we review and rank Remain In Light by the Talking Heads! For their iconic 1980 record, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz migrated to the Bahamas to escape city life. While they were there they developed an affinity for the Caribbean ethos and African-inspired percussion, which they brought into the studio alongside producer Brian Eno. The result is a polyrhythmic, pulsing new-wave sound, made with "human sampling" techniques and a flair for the funky. The record is home to instant classics like Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) and Once In A Lifetime, but how will the rest of these intense-yet-danceable tracks hold up?James & Connor (your own resident talking heads) walk through the band's history and a breakup so sudden only David Byrne knew it had even happened! We'll talk about their inspirations and legacy, and we'll learn why this blotchy album cover is the first of its kind! The Mixtaper's ready for another round on the Great Curve of Fact Or Spin with tales of limo dispatches, sticky shaving, and a humiliating burglary at letter-opener point. Then we'll Overload you with facts about the 8 tracks that make up Remain In Light... but the Talking Heads' score remains to be Seen And Not Seen. You may ask yourself, "well, how did I get here?" SummaryIn this episode, I discuss copper overload, a common yet often overlooked contributor to various mental health issues, including postpartum depression and ADHD.The referenced data comes from the Walsh Research Institute, which studied nutrient levels in 30,0000 people with brain related symptoms, and found a small handful of nutrient imbalances repeated showing up. Copper overload was the one of those imbalances.I explain the relationship between copper and zinc, and how elevated copper can impact neurotransmitter functioning. I also address the symptoms of high copper, potential causes for its elevation, methods for assessing copper levels, and treatment strategies to manage copper overload effectivelyTakeaways* Copper overload is prevalent in mental health conditions.* High copper levels are linked to postpartum depression.* Copper affects neurotransmitter functioning, specifically dopamine and norepinephrine* Zinc is essential for regulating copper levels.* Symptoms of high copper include anxiety, insomnia, depression and rage.* Dietary sources of copper include shellfish and chocolate.* Oxidative stress can elevate copper levels.* Copper and estrogen have a significant relationship.* Assessment of copper involves specific lab tests.* Treatment includes nutrient protocols and reducing exposure.Chapters00:00 Understanding Copper Overload10:36 Identifying Symptoms and Conditions Related to Copper21:10 Assessing and Treating Copper OverloadTranscriptAs always, I welcome any comments and questions, as these help guide the information that I share.Until next time,CourtneyTo learn more about my discovery calls, non-patient consultations, or mentoring, please visit my website at:CourtneySnyderMD.comMedical Disclaimer:This newsletter is for educational purposes and not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment for either yourself or others, including but not limited to patients that you are treating (if you are a practitioner). Procrastination is one of the most common labels adults with ADHD use when they feel stuck — but in many cases, it's not what's really happening. In this episode of ADHD Support Talk Radio, Tara McGillicuddy explains why what looks like procrastination for adults with ADHD is often actually brain overload. Too many thoughts, too much information, and too much pressure can shut down action, even when motivation is high. Tara explores how information overload, mental clutter, and urgency can make it harder to start or follow through — and why trying harder often makes things worse. She also explains why vague goals like "start" or "get organized" increase overwhelm, and how identifying one clear, specific action can help reduce overload and make movement possible again. This episode offers a more compassionate and practical way to understand why ADHD brains get stuck — and what actually helps when taking action feels impossible. In this episode, Kamini Wood addresses the high achievers, caregivers, and leaders who have become the "strong one"—the dependable anchor who stabilizes every environment while quietly feeling invisible and exhausted. Wood explores how this role often originates in childhood as a survival mechanism or a response to early responsibility, eventually becoming so tied to one's identity that the world forgets the "strong one" has human limits and emotional needs. This chronic state of readiness carries a heavy physiological cost, manifesting as muscle tension, migraines, and emotional burnout from absorbing the weight of others' lives without receiving support in return. By inviting listeners to reflect on the fears behind softening their exterior, Wood provides a roadmap for re-patterning this role through "micro-truths," practicing the muscle of receiving, and setting boundaries to ensure strength no longer requires self-sacrifice

In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, host Tyson Mutrux interviews Chris Earley about his unconventional path to founding a law firm, the challenges he faced in the legal profession, and his journey of personal growth. He discusses the pivotal role of mentorship, mindset shifts, and self-care practices like meditation. Chris shares his insights on the need to address personal issues while running a law firm to ensure they don't interfere with professional responsibilities. Being a lawyer can be very tough, especially with the types of cases seen and it can lead to irrational and heated behaviour that can affect other people. Chris tells listeners to pause and really take some time to think about your feelings before you potentially make a mistake, like sending a fiery email. It is also important to think about healthy alternatives like therapy to work through your issues. It is really important for lawyers to be authentic. Being real and vulnerable is the best way to connect with people and network with others in the industry. For Chris, he uses LinkedIn as a platform to share real, vulnerable moments with followers. It is the perfect place to share successes and failures so others can learn, especially for fellow lawyers who are looking to learn from those who are more seasoned.Listen in to learn more!3:52 Lessons on Mindset Shifts5:48 Navigating the Overload of Legal Experts 16:45 Addressing Personal Issues33:37 Vulnerability as a Superpower38:10 Authenticity for LawyersConnect with Christopher:Website InstagramLinkedin717-956-2501Tune in to today's episode and checkout the full show notes here.

In Part 2, Ted Kroeten goes deeper into the mechanics of free play, why traditional training misreads how kids actually learn, and how small-sided chaos builds problem-solvers, communicators, and creators. From one-v-one misconceptions to futsal culture, mixed-age environments, and why American kids rarely get “underload” time, Ted explains what the U.S. must rethink to compete globally. He also breaks down what parents can actually do to bring joy and development back into their child's soccer life — even without a Joy of the People program nearby. This conversation is a blueprint for the next 10–15 years of American soccer… if we're willing to go “down the mountain” before climbing higher.Key Talking Points• Why 1v1 isn't the holy grail — and why 2v2 teaches the real language of soccer• What small-sided games unlock: communication, deception, decision-making• The concept of overload vs underload and how it shapes development• Why futsal, SALs, barefoot play, and alternate balls accelerate creativity• The danger of top-down coaching and why talk-heavy models block learning• How kids self-regulate, self-officiate, and learn conflict resolution in real play• Why U.S. kids lack free play opportunities — especially girls• The global shift toward small-sided formats and why the U.S. is behind• How parents can build play cultures at home, in neighborhoods, and in friend groups• Ted's vision for the U.S. over the next 10–15 years — and why a “Play Revolution” is comingQuotes from Ted Kroeten• “Kids don't want to learn soccer — they want to be with their friends. The learning is a byproduct.”• “One-v-one doesn't really exist. Two-v-two teaches the real communication of the game.”• “If a kid knows how they learned it, it can be hacked. If they learned it unconsciously, it can't.”• “Small-sided, uncoached play is where the language of the game is spoken.”• “Friends must come before skills. Trust must come before competition.”• “We don't need more performance — we need more joy.”Episode Chapters00:00 — Why 1v1 Is Misunderstood in Player Development03:45 — 2v2 and 3v3: Where the Language of Soccer Lives07:30 — Small-Sided Chaos and Real Decision-Making11:15 — Overload vs Underload: Reading Kids, Not Results15:30 — Why Futsal Changes How Players Think19:30 — Mixed-Age Play and Learning From Older Kids23:30 — When Performance Kills Joy and Creativity27:45 — Kids Who Love Winning vs Kids Who Love Playing31:45 — Parents, Pressure, and the Loss of Free Play36:00 — Why U.S. Soccer Develops Too Early, Too Fast40:30 — Self-Regulation, Conflict, and Social Learning in Play44:30 — Building Play Environments Without a Club48:45 — What Coaches Talk Too Much About52:45 — Peak Height Velocity and Developmental Timing57:00 — Why Free-Play Kids Struggle Early but Thrive Later1:01:15 — Failing First to Build Better Players1:05:30 — The Next 10–15 Years of American Soccer1:09:30 — A Call to Trust Kids and Protect PlayConnect with Ted / Joy of the People

In Round 103 of the Tactical Transition Tips on the Transition Drill Podcast, some mornings you wake up and you're already behind, not on tasks, but in your head. The list isn't a list anymore. It's a pile. Career decisions collide with money decisions. Money decisions collide with family pressure. Family pressure collides with location, timing, and the question you keep dodging: what happens when your current lane ends. This episode is about transition overload, what it actually is, how it sneaks in, and why it's dangerous even when you're still performing well. Transition overload isn't being busy. It's too many major decisions competing for the same mental space at the same time. When that happens, you don't just feel tired. Your judgment gets less accurate. You start bouncing between tasks, chasing quick relief instead of clear outcomes. You either rush decisions to collapse the pile, avoid decisions by staying in research mode, or do a little of everything and finish nothing. The point here isn't to grind harder. It's to protect decision quality. Because the quiet risk of overload is the quiet decision. The one you make just to reduce uncertainty. The one that turns into a path you didn't fully choose. This episode breaks down the difference between pressure with order and pressure without order, and why the second one feels endless. It also gives you three practical moves based on your timeline, so you can keep your transition deliberate instead of reactive.Close Range Group (transitioning within a year): Sequence Your Transition, Don't Pile It.Pick one primary lane for the next 60 to 90 days and put everything else in maintenance mode so you stop burning bandwidth on competing priorities.Medium Range Group (transitioning in 3 to 5 years): Reassess Your “Wish” List.Write out the expectations you've been carrying and renegotiate what still fits so you don't build a future plan around an outdated version of yourself.Long Range Group (transitioning in a decade or more): Put Buffers in Place to Avoid Panic Choices.Build financial, skill, and personal buffers now so future decisions don't get made under threat when timelines change fast.If you've felt friction instead of focus, this episode will help you spot what's happening and slow the pile down before it shrinks your options.Get additional resources and join our newsletter via the link in the show notes.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:IG: https://www.instagram.com/paulpantani/WEBSITE: https://www.transitiondrillpodcast.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulpantani/SIGN-UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER:https://transitiondrillpodcast.com/home#aboutQUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:paul@transitiondrillpodcast.comSPONSORS:Frontline OpticsGet 10% off your purchaseLink: https://frontlineoptics.comPromocode: Transition10GRND CollectiveGet 15% off your purchaseLink: https://thegrndcollective.com/Promo Code: TRANSITION15
Joy of the People founder and longtime coach Ted Kroeten joins Chat By The Pitch to break down what truly develops creative, intelligent players — and why most of the U.S. youth soccer system gets it upside down. Ted's “soccer as a language” philosophy reframes how kids learn, why free play must come before instruction, and how mixed-age, low-pressure environments cultivate game intelligence no coach can teach. From the failures of super clubs and the youth sports industrial complex to Joy of the People's bold commitment to no tryouts, no cuts, and no overcoaching, Ted delivers one of the clearest visions of what American development could be if we trusted kids to play again. If you care about player development, coaching, or burnout in youth sports — this episode will challenge everything you think you know.Key Talking Points• Ted's journey from late-start player to coaching leader and founder of Joy of the People• Why he walked away from the elite club model and the youth sports industrial complex• “Soccer as a language” — acquisition vs learning, Chomsky, Krashen, and immersion• What kids learn in free play that coaches cannot teach• Why Joy of the People operates with no tryouts, no cuts, no pressure• How mixed-age play, different surfaces, and alternate balls accelerate creativity• Overload vs underload: reading effort, joy, and false intensity in players• Why early free-play kids lag at first—but surpass others by U16–U19• The danger of over-rewarding performance and creating kids who only love winning• Building a true community model where every kid matters and development lastsQuotes from Ted Kroeten• "When I saw kids in play learning things I could not teach them, I knew there was something in play."• "Unstructured play, street play, free play has developed the top players in the world."• "We've been teaching soccer only with rules and techniques, not allowing acquisition to occur."• "The best way to learn a complex language is not a teacher — it's immersion."• "Kids who fall in love with explicit training programs are in danger of burning out."• "We don't have tryouts. We have a mix of everyone — and they bloom on their own timeline."Episode Chapters00:00 — Ted Kroeten's Late Start and Multi-Sport Roots03:10 — Coaching at the Highest Levels and Seeing the Cracks06:00 — Walking Away from the Youth Soccer Industrial Complex08:30 — Founding Joy of the People and the Decision to Prioritize Play11:45 — Watching Kids Learn What Coaches Can't Teach14:30 — Poverty of the Stimulus and Why Play Accelerates Learning18:00 — Soccer as a Language: Acquisition vs Instruction22:45 — Chomsky, Krashen, and Immersion on the Field27:30 — The Panenka Penalty and Non-Verbal Soccer Communication31:30 — Why Cone Work Fails Under Real Pressure35:00 — What Parents Miss When They Watch Training38:30 — Early Attempts at Free Play — and Why They Failed42:45 — Building a Community Hub with the City of St. Paul46:30 — Kids “Not Knowing How to Play” and What That Revealed50:45 — Removing Tryouts, Cuts, and External Pressure55:30 — What Joy of the People Looks Like Day to Day59:30 — Losing Games Early to Win Long Term1:03:30 — Why Joy and Belonging Come Before ResultsConnect with Ted / Joy of the People

Why do high-achievers feel perpetually behind, even while consuming more content than ever? In this conversation, Pat Flynn explains the trap of “overlearning” and how it quietly keeps us stuck in motion without progress. You'll learn how to shift from “just-in-case” learning to “just-in-time” learning, create real momentum with a simple four-step framework, and protect what matters most with practical boundaries. Along the way, Pat shares how these principles helped him build multiple successful businesses (including a Pokémon channel with millions of followers) without sacrificing his family, health, or joy.Memorable Quotes“We all, in a way, are not just our overlearning, but we're getting over-inspired. We're so connected with so many amazing people out there who teach us this and push us over here, and then we're pulled over this way. We're spread so thin it's we're we're not seeing any results in our own life.”“Now we all have access to all the same kind of information, but we're still treating it as if it's scarce…However, we now live in a buffet line of information… and we're not quite evolved to absorb all of this because we're stuffing our plates full. Not only are we getting bloated and and and slowed down, but we're also getting force-fed on these platforms.”“This is the difference between ‘just-in-case learning,' which is what we've all been doing, and ‘just-in-time learning,' which is learning what you need to know to just take that next step. Because truly the action of taking that next step, the results of that one way or another—whether there are good results or bad results—can teach you so much more than just absorbing this information and never taking any action at all.” “[Silence] allows me to be with myself and to digest the things that I've already learned, to think about my priorities and the things I've already committed to. It allows me to make creative connections between things that I have already picked up instead of just getting more puzzle pieces to try to figure out where they go.”“I mean I was always taught that again, ‘The more you know the more successful you'll be,' and there's always seemingly opportunities to inject more of that learning. And it has this sort of fake productivity that goes along with it, because it is only truly productive, in my opinion, when you actually put into action those things that you do read or listen to or watch.”“At our authors retreat, a theme across most of the people there was not optimizing for revenue, not optimizing for scale, but optimizing for peace. And that was huge to think about.”“If I give myself five months to learn, I'm gonna take five months to learn it. If I give myself five hours to learn, I'm gonna take five hours to learn it. So I almost use time as a tool to help me get to the point of action and then understanding sooner.”“I've developed this rule called the 20% Itch Rule, and that is, out of all the things you do, 80% of your time is dedicated to the things you've already committed to, the things that, the responsibilities you have, the things that you've already said, yes to. The last 20% of time, allocate for curiosity, for play, for experimentation.”Key TakeawaysOverlearning Is a Hidden Productivity Trap. Constant consumption creates a sense of progress without producing results—and often adds more “to-dos” than your life can hold.Shift from “Just-in-Case” to “Just-in-Time.” Learn only what you need for the next step, then take action. Real learning accelerates through doing.Use the 4-Step Lean Learning Cycle. Identify the next step → choose one resource → implement → review. Repeat.Silence Helps You Digest What You Already Know. Pat's “silent car” habit creates space for integration, creativity, and clarity.Watch for “Junk Sparks.” Many ideas are just distractions dressed up as opportunity—especially when algorithms reduce the friction to buy, click, or binge.Try the “20% Itch Rule.” Dedicate 80% of your time to current commitments and responsibilities, and reserve 20% for curiosity, experimentation, and play—without blowing up your life.Optimize for Peace, Not Scale. More revenue isn't always worth the hidden cost. A Double Win means there's still room for what makes you feel most alive.ResourcesSmart Passive Income (Pat's Business)Superfans (Book)Lean Learning (Book)Watch on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/aLp6hHTrYQsThis episode was produced by Sarah Vorhees Wendel of VW Sound
The best (and cheapest) therapy for those small things that get under your skin is sometimes a good venting session so you can get it off your chest and move on with your life! What if you could hire an army of AI security analysts that work 24/7 investigating alerts so your human team can focus on what actually matters? Edward Wu, founder and CEO of DropZone AI, joins The Audit crew to reveal how large language models are transforming security operations—and why the future of cyber defense looks more like a drone war than traditional SOC work. From his eight years at AttackIQ generating millions of security alerts (and the fatigue that came with them), Edward built DropZone to solve the problem he helped create: alert overload. This conversation goes deep on AI agents specializing in different security domains, the asymmetry problem between attackers and defenders, and why deepfakes might require us to use "safe words" before every Zoom call. What You'll Learn: How AI tier-1 analysts automate 90% of alert triage to find real threats faster Why attackers only need to be right once, but AI can level the playing field Real-world deepfake attacks hitting finance teams right now The societal implications of AI-driven social engineering at scale Whether superintelligence will unlock warp engines or just better spreadsheets If alert fatigue is crushing your security team, this episode delivers the blueprint for fighting back with AI. Episode Summary Jon unpacks why kids often look “ungrateful” or overwhelmed during gift-heavy holidays—and why it has nothing to do with entitlement and everything to do with biology, routine disruption, and emotional overload. Through real parent questions, he explores what's happening underneath the behavior, why forced gratitude backfires, and how parents can set expectations, model appreciation, and protect connection without trying to manufacture a perfect holiday moment. #661: When your income drops, debt spikes, and a rental property starts bleeding cash, it can feel like your entire financial foundation is cracking beneath you. Veronica, our first caller, is navigating all of it at once, from a near-foreclosure to a luxury car payment that's strangling her budget. Her question is simple but enormous, how do you rebuild when you're overwhelmed and out of margin? Once we work through her path forward, we shift to a listener on the opposite end of the spectrum. Daniel has maxed his Roth IRA, HSA, 401(k), and 457, and now sits on growing surplus cash. We talk about where extra money belongs when you're aiming for early retirement and wondering whether to invest, save, or crush a low-interest mortgage. And to close, we take on a question dominating every financial feed right now, what if AI stocks really are in a bubble? We break down what it means to short the market, whether put options are actually a “safe” bet, and how to position a portfolio if you're worried about tech valuations. Listener Questions in This Episode Veronica asks (02:06): How do I dig out of debt, repair my credit, and stabilize my rental after nearly going into foreclosure. Daniel asks (28:17): What should I do with my surplus side hustle cash when I already max tax-advantaged accounts and have a 3.5 percent rental mortgage. Scarlet asks (49:20): If AI stocks are in a bubble like the dot-com era, is there any relatively safe way to profit from a crash, such as put options. Key Takeaways Why tackling the right problem first can change the entire trajectory of a debt recovery plan. How downsizing one major expense can unlock breathing room you didn't realize you had. The surprising factor that often matters more than interest rates when choosing between investing and debt payoff. Why flexible money becomes essential when planning for early retirement. What most people misunderstand about betting against a bubble, especially in fast-moving tech sectors. The simple portfolio shift that can help calm bubble anxiety without trying to time the market.
