POPULARITY
In this edition of our Inside Track podcast, we kick things off with the question, "Why are DJs always expected to be doing something? Is looking busy really that important?" We also dive into why popular software platform VirtualDJ sometimes gets a bad rep among the wider DJing community. And finally, we look at the importance of recording DJ sets, alongside some of the challenges that come with it.As always, this pod is supported 100% by the students of Digital DJ Tips, and it was recorded in a live webinar with lots of valuable student feedback. A mix beamed in from the future by singeli's young star. If singeli has a new era, DJ Travella is its leading light. At just 23 years old, the Tanzanian producer is pushing the genre into fast, frenetic and unmistakably futuristic territory. And while there aren't too many entries in the RA Podcast's 20-year history where you can say, "this has no parallel whatsoever," RA.984 shatters that assumption in style. Singeli emerged from Dar es Salaam's underground in the early '00s, forged from limited resources and unlimited creativity. Producers looped and sped up taarab instrumentals using basic software like Virtual DJ, creating a sound that was chaotic, witty and lightning fast. With support from local studios like Sisso and Pamoja, singeli took root as the breakneck pulse of Tanzanian youth culture. Travella—real name Hamadi Hassani—came up outside that infrastructure. He began producing music aged ten, self-taught and internet-savvy. By 2022, he was touring Europe with Kampala-based collective Nyege Nyege and gaining global attention for a distinct style he's dubbed "cyber-singeli." Like gabber, hardcore and jungle before it, singeli is unapologetically go hard or go home. It's unique and utterly infectious. After all, what could possibly connect pop provocateur Arca to the late president of Tanzania? Not much—except singeli. Travella's RA Podcast is a white-knuckle ride through this blistering sonic universe. It's wild and joyful yet controlled—a window into one of the most exciting young minds in global club music. @user-643479850 Find the interview and tracklist at ra.co/podcast/984.

Episode 105 The 2023 US Open Tennis Soundscape Playlist This podcast comprises an amorphous blend of sounds of the US Open tennis championships, vintage recordings of tennis instructions, a little electronic music, and lots of audio processing. All the sounds of the US Open grounds were made by me and include crowds, the fountain in front of Arthur Ashe stadium (the largest tennis venue in the world), rain, grounds equipment, jet airplane flyovers, chair umpires delivering scores, and many tennis players hitting, playing, and practicing. Sounds of the tennis facility and players: Novak Djokovic, Varvara Lepchenko, Alexander Zverev, Andy Murray, Dan Evans, Kwiatkowski, Thai-Son, Stan Wawrinka, Matteo Berrettini, Taylor Fritz, Vasek Pospisil, Ilya Ivashka plus many other unidentified male and female players captured during my walks around the grounds. The ambience of various courts is also present, including Louis Armstrong stadium, the Grandstand, and a variety of outer courts. These all differ in the kind of containing structures, and range from the enclosed (Armstrong) to the wide open (outside courts). Vintage Instructional recordings used: Arthur Ashe, Learn Tennis (For Beginners & Advanced Players) (1974 Manhattan Recording Company). Vinyl, 12 ." Arthur Ashe teaches you Tennis. Comes with 8-page black/white instructional booklet. John Newcombe, Tennis With John Newcombe (1974 K-Tel). Limited Collectors Edition. Vinyl, 12 ." Narrator, unidentified. 12-Page Tennis tips Booklet Enclosed. Promotional item for Rawlings tennis products. Evonne Goolagong, Tennis Tips By Evonne Goolagong (1975 Fleetwood Records). Vinyl, 7", 33 ⅓ RPM. Narrated with questions by Bud Collins. Audio processing. I love repetition. Loops are kind of my happy place. I have created many textures around the loops from the vintage recordings, some more dense than others, some with added beats and electronically generated sound. I also did several treatments of audio tracks using MetaSynth CTX 1.2, the Effects Room, particularly the inertia and shuffler features. I also processed some sections of the soundscape in real-time using Virtual DJ and added it to the final mix. I have developed a technique for processing natural sounds and transforming them into drones. For this soundscape, I did this using the sounds of tennis balls being hit, which accounts for the loud pings that color the drone. There are two sections. They begin around 26:00 and 47:00 of the soundscape. The first is a single drone, the second comprises multiple drones created with different tonal centers and played simultaneously. While I curate the individual sounds and apply treatments separately, overall the mix is largely based on the chance encounters of different sounds across the soundscape. I generally decide on techniques to apply to given sections and then let the pieces fall where they may to see what happens. I auditioned numerous mixes for the podcast before deciding on this one. This is a mixdown of 33 tracks with over 131 individual sounds included in the mix, which also includes a composite track from Virtual DJ including manipulation of a half dozen tracks recorded in real-time. Opening background music: Sounds of tennis. Unidentified rally hitters, Stan Wawrinka drone sequence, Vasek Pospisil and Ilya Ivashka gameplay. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

DJs have been embracing technology for decades, from the early days of vinyl and turntables to the digital age of CDJs and laptops. With each new technological advancement, DJs have found new and innovative ways to mix and manipulate music. Some examples of how DJs have embraced technology include:Digital Music Libraries: With the advent of digital music, DJs can now carry thousands of songs on a single laptop or USB drive. This makes it easier to access and organize music, as well as to switch between songs quickly and seamlessly.DJ Software: There are a variety of software programs designed specifically for DJs, such as Serato, Traktor, and Virtual DJ. These programs offer a range of features, such as beat matching, looping, and effects, that allow DJs to create complex and dynamic sets.MIDI Controllers: MIDI controllers allow DJs to control their software and hardware using physical knobs, buttons, and faders. This gives DJs a tactile experience when mixing and allows for more precise control over their music.Online Platforms: DJs have also started embracing online platforms such as Mixcloud and Soundcloud, which allow them to share their mixes and reach a wider audience.Livestreaming: The rise of livestreaming platforms such as Twitch and Instagram Live has also allowed DJs to connect with their fans and share their music in real-time.Overall, technology has opened up new possibilities for DJs, allowing them to be more creative, efficient, and connected with their audiences. While some traditionalists may still prefer the feel of vinyl and turntables, it's clear that technology has become an integral part of the DJing landscape.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/we-create-the-vibes-podcast/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It is becoming increasingly important for DJs to embrace the latest tools and software available to them. From new hardware controllers and software to streaming platforms and social media, there are a wealth of new opportunities for DJs to enhance their performances and reach new audiences.By embracing technology, DJs can take advantage of powerful tools that can help them to create more dynamic and engaging performances, as well as better connect with their fans. For example, software like Serato, Traktor, and Virtual DJ offer DJs the ability to manipulate and remix tracks in real time, giving them greater creative control over their sets.Similarly, streaming platforms like SoundCloud and Mixcloud allow DJs to easily share their performances with a wider audience, while social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok provide a means of connecting with fans and building a following.Of course, it's important to note that while technology can be a powerful tool for DJs, it should never be seen as a substitute for skill and talent. At the end of the day, it's still up to the DJ to create engaging and memorable performances that connect with their audience. In short, DJs who fail to embrace technology risk falling behind their peers and missing out on new opportunities. By staying up-to-date with the latest tools and platforms, however, DJs can continue to grow and evolve their craft in exciting new ways.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/we-create-the-vibes-podcast/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Kicking off this month we have our long-time friend X&Z at the helm, curating a seamless blend of deep and heavy dance floor bombs, enjoy! -- Follow @xandzzz https://xzmusic3.bandcamp.com https://www.instagram.com/x.and.z/ -- "X&Z picked up DJing in his bedroom after downloading Virtual DJ in 2012. He had just fallen in love with dance music & the scene around it, and wanted to be more involved. His progression and overall build in confidence continued onto playing live gigs; starting with desert parties. From there, he started organizing small local shows & began to build a name for himself. This led to bookings at major clubs in cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, San Diego and more. He has since played alongside & opened up for some big heavy hitters in the game, whether it be at clubs or festivals. Aside from DJ'ing, X&Z has been avidly producing music since 2015 and continues to do so, with constant studio time and steady releases. Whether it's DJing or Producing, music is his life and what he loves. Keep an eye out for more releases and shows from him! The latest installment of my re-released seasonal mix series is Escapade, which was originally released as Summer Mix 2012. It was the second mix I ever made; created in Virtual DJ before I got my first controller Summer for me is all about enjoying the sunshine and hot weather with friends and some feel-good house and disco jams. I was heading out to Fire Island with some friends and I wanted a mix that we could listen to poolside during the day. The vibe here is very nu-disco/house in a tropical poolside paradise fantasyland, but also funky enough to dance to; serving up thick bouncy bass lines, sparkly arpeggios, island percussion, and dreamy fun pop vocals. ☀️
Dj PeeFunk - VirtualDJ Radio In Da Mix 9-1-22
Dj Peefunk - VirtualDJ Radio In Da Mix 8-29-22
Originally released in June 2013 as Spring Nights 2013, I recorded this set on my laptop using Virtual DJ right before I got my first DJ controller. It was part of my Seasonal Mix Series as a nighttime counterpart to Spring 2012, which is now called Emerge. I wanted this mix to have the same springtime vibe as Emerge, but more geared for the dance floor. I fell in love with DJs and DJ culture in the mid to late 90s through Progressive House and then Trance around the turn of the millennium. Sasha & Digweed, BT, Nick Warren / Way Out West, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Underworld and Orbital are all reasons why I wanted to be a DJ. I went to school at Boston University, and lived behind the Citgo Sign just a short walk from Landsdowne St, the major club district. While friends of mine were going to frat parties and drinking, I was going out to see my favorite DJs play sets at megaclubs at the height of trance and progressive house. I wanted to make a mix that captured the same Spring vibe of energy and positivity, while also connecting the dots between some of my favorite older tracks from the 90s with more current (in 2013) progressive house sounds. The end result is a neon colored mix that oscillates between beautiful chill progressive house and ecstatic emotional bangers
