Each week, Derek and Lisa Dokter, will discuss a topic that falls under a category of either Bible, Bull (shit, hunky, honky, crap, etc.), or Booze. Each episode will be 15 - 60 minutes, maybe longer on complicated topics. Sometimes alcohol will be involved, sometimes it won't. Derek has an undergraduate in philosophy and a master's in divinity. Lisa has 90% of an undergraduate in Biblical theology. We enjoy many TV shows, various genres of music, a menagerie of liquors, and debating the issues that face the Christian church of America.

TRIGGER WARNING! This episode covers death, abortion, sexual assault/rape, incest, and abuse. Listener discretion is advised. In this hard hitting episode on life and death, explaining what caused the extended pause in the release of the season three premiere, Lisa and Derek tackle, or rather wrestle with, the topic of abortion and the current political climate that has the Supreme Court of America poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. The determination is ultimately until ethically proven statistically, abortion should come down to personal choice. There is currently no metric for deciding whether an abortion is detrimental to society or beneficial and until such a time as the statistics can prove that is detrimental, it should be left to the individual who is pregnant to determine what is best for their body. This is a longer one, so buckle up and weigh in on social media. We'd love to know your feelings and opinions on this topic. This week, Derek was drinking a 750 mL Yellow Tail Sauvignon Blanc and Lisa was drinking 3 oz of Parrot Bay Pineapple Rum with 3 oz of Captain Jack Coconut Rum mixed with 3 oz of Skinny Mermaid Syrup and Coconut LaCroix. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message
In this week's episode, Derek and Lisa talk about the pitfalls of resolutions and what those pitfalls mean to Christians. Are goals being used as tools or metrics for success (or failure)? Ultimately, the conclusion is drawn in typical Dokter Knows Best fashion where love of God, love of self, and love for others is the true goal and if a resolution doesn't fall into those categories, then it's probably not good for you. But listen in and make your own determination. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message
SPOILER ALERT! This week's episode dives deep into both the Marvel/Disney TV show "Hawkeye" and the Marvel/Disney Movie "Spider-Man: No Way Home." If you haven't seen either, and want to, avoid this episode as there are major spoilers ahead. This week, Derek and Lisa dive deeper into the implication of two spoilers. One for "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and the other for "Hawkeye." The implications being that the MCU and Disney are gearing up to bring back the cast of "Daredevil" from Netflix. Grandfathering into the MCU both Matthew Murdock and Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin). As always, the discussion twists and turns, but ultimately revolves around both the TV show and the movie that had characters from Netflix's "Daredevil" premiering on the same weekend in December. We hope you'll listen in and enjoy Derek and Lisa's views on the newest installment to Disney's MCU. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message

This week, Derek and Lisa discuss the origin of how Christmas came to be on December 25th and how that date is not uniquely Christian. Then they discuss how the best approach to the holiday is to be a Christian and think about how your neighbor might feel if they are not Christian. Empathy plays a huge role in putting Christ back in Christmas. In this episode, Lisa and Derek talk a lot about American politics, but also discuss the historicity and the entertainment of the AMC Original series "Turn: Washington's Spies." Their conversation discusses the accuracy of the broad details of the show and the history that inspired it. This series, starring Jamie Bell, is worth a watch even though it might cost a few dollars to do so. This week, Derek and Lisa tackle the difficult topic of denominational tribalism. It is that "hot button" issue that basically means that two different beliefs within the same denomination/religion are at odds with each other that creates a rift. These rifts do great damage within a church and within a person. Derek and Lisa will talk about this at a corporate level and a personal level. Ultimately, Lisa sides with the "run it through the filter of love" thought process, while Derek lands in the "Imma sin boldly to help others" side of things. Listen in to perhaps learn and hear how Dokter Knows Best navigates this touchy topic. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message

If you haven't heard, Adele is putting out a new album on November 19, 2021. The album "30" is already making waves with only one single out and boy oh boy do Derek and Lisa have opinions. In true Derek fashion, there are a few stones thrown, but Lisa quickly tries to set the record straight because, let's face it, Adele is special for her vulnerability through song. Lisa goes through Adele's portfolio, album by album, song by song, with some horrible renditions added in for good measure. But ultimately, Derek and Lisa decide that "30" almost has to be different than the previous three albums purely because of where Adele is in her life. Join in and let us know if you are excited for the new album or if you think Adele is overrated. We want to know. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message
Note: Lisa experienced technical issues with her microphone that weren't discovered or rectified until towards the end of the episode. Rather than go back and record the whole thing over again (after she started drinking), they decided to just keep going. Please forgive us for this technical issue. In this week's episode, Derek tries to dive too deep. Lisa reels him back into to safer territory. They throw stones at white churches. And come to the same conclusion that they always do where Christian perspectives are the concern. It is better to err on the side of love than to hate someone for their skin color, their ethnicity, their identity. Listen in as they discuss the difficult topic of racism in the church. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message
This week's episode is on the Amazon Original Series, "Carnival Row," starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne. If you haven't watched the series, we hope that you will and join us with your favorite beverage for this discussion. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message
TRIGGER WARNING! This episode discusses sexual assault and rape. This week, Derek and Lisa target the various ways that conservative churches use to manipulate women into fulfilling specific gender roles. It also tackles the touchy topics of patriarchy, greed, and power that punish women for wanting to be a full person assisting with ministry as called by God. Lisa discusses her personal experiences from childhood through adulthood and draws a line in the sand between choice and expectation that is enforced via punishment. Please be aware that a significant portion of this week's episode also explores women's sexuality and the sexual abuses that are exploited to blame and shame women into compliance. We hope you'll thoughtfully listen and perhaps interact with us on this very important topic. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message
In this special Bull episode, Derek and Lisa talk for way too long about their alcohol selection for the evening, get distracted about which show they are supposed to be talking about, and ultimately throw stones at most television entertainment. Herding cats, they find their way back to this hit Netflix series, "The Last Kingdom" that chronicles the life and times of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (aka, Uhtred son of Uhtred) and his loyalties to both Saxon and Danish leaders that sends him on a path to attempting to reclaim his homeland while also doing what he had to do to survive and prosper. This week's episode has a very tired Derek and Lisa trying to define how the separation of church and state and the Divine preference to "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's" means that as Christians in America, our focus should be on what is best for all instead of what is best for Christians. Stones do end up getting thrown and talking in circles happens. Perhaps gibberish, perhaps enlightened, but always entertaining. Based off of a TikTok phenomenon in regards to "Modest Is Hottest" by Matthew West, Derek and Lisa tackle two hot button church topics this week in church dress code and church music. These two topics go together in this one song that was used to encourage girls at a church to dress modestly in order to discourage other church members from sinning. The music at churches is often used to encourage emotions that get members to tithe more or evoke feelings on a specific issue. In both arenas, Derek and Lisa conclude that if dress or music is used to oppress anyone within the church then it is not "of God." But there is grey area to be found on both topics and nothing is ever as clear cut as people would want you to believe. As with most things, running these topics through the lens of love will assist each individual in knowing what is right for them and their faith. TRIGGER WARNING! This episode involves discussions around sexual assault and religious trauma. This week's episode comes from the popular TikTok hashtag of deconstructing. This term is used to discuss the stepping away and examining of a faith community that was toxic and harmful to an individual. Derek and Lisa discuss how being in the deconstructing mode of stepping away from a faith community can be hurtful if pursued for too long. And ultimately come to the conclusion that we need to move from deconstructing to reconstructing much sooner than we normally would consider doing so. Reliving our traumas does not need to be the way of life, but rather a momentary marker on a much longer journey. We hope this episode will be as deep and meaningful for you as it was for us. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message
This made up term is supposed to combine contemporary and relevant church styles. It highlights a problem within the modern church and how it is used to continually be a money making machine for the Christian religion in America. Derek and Lisa will break it apart and, in true Dokter Knows Best style, throw all sorts of stones at the churches who use this style of "worship" to lure people in and get them to bring others into what Derek refers to as their "cult light" community. Listen in for a fascinating take on contemporvent churches. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message

"But why is the rum gone?" - Captain Jack Sparrow Because of Derek and Lisa, that's why. This week, five shots, five rums, five prices, and all rum. Please drink your rum responsibly so Captain Jack doesn't come for you. We hope you enjoy the season one, short but sweet, finale! This week, Derek and Lisa make, for the first time ever, an old fashion cocktail. They discuss what's good about it and then immediately regret putting their own unique spin on it. Lisa tries to convince Derek that it would be fine if he backed off the simple syrup, but Derek, as is his true nature, throws stones at Lisa's ideas. The two ultimately have one too many (and one more than Derek said they would) and quickly finish the episode so that Lisa doesn't continue talking in circles. All in all, we'd say the old fashion cocktail episode was a success. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message

Um.....yeah.....this one is an interesting one y'all. If you haven't heard "WAP" by Cardi B, just don't. It'll only disgust you like it has Derek. This week, Derek and Lisa have the much anticipated, long awaited whether fruity beer is actually beer discussion that doesn't turn out to be a discussion at all. Derek concedes the point rather early on as they both drink too much too fast. Much belching ensues only to end with the need for snacks to help soak up the alcohol in their stomachs. Drunkenness gives way to more conceding the point that fruity beer is in fact beer and the episode ends with crunching on crackers. It may not be the most fascinating episode, but it's down right ridiculous by the end. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dokterknowsbest/message

That being Christian hypocrisy and the things that people do or do not do as Christians that don't align with scripture. Derek goes on a long drawn out tangent. Lisa buckles up. And then in a pathetic attempt to gain listeners, Lisa makes a vague reference to the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Finally, the verbal flood gates open and Lisa and Derek fight to talk at the same time to finish the episode.
