Philippa is back, at a new time, for The British History Live Show, a live show discussing history stories and history in the news, every 2 weeks at 6:30pm UK time. This week sees the anniversaries of the coronation of England's Danish King Canute, the death of Edward the Confessor and the coronation of Harold Godwinson. Philippa discusses how Canute came to power in the beginning, how he elevated Earl Godwin to a point that saw his son as the natural successor to Edward the Confessor and who came in between. Also, “who was the real Uhtred?” plus new features: history in the news, history events and what abomination AI created for Philippa this week! Do you have a niggling question? Historical Novel Society Conference 2024! Bernard Cornwell has been on the show before but this is the first time we've actually met him in person. He's our historical fiction hero so you can imagine how hyped we were to sit and chat with him about Sharpe, and what's next for his writing with perhaps some HUGE news if you're a fan of Uhtred and The Last Kingdom... He'd only just delivered the keynote speech at the conference then signed a TON of books for people so we were very grateful that he took some time to speak with us again. A true inspiration to us all. https://www.bernardcornwell.net/ Join us on Patreon for monthly bonus episodes, a FREE copy of our book Tips for Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Novel, and more perks. patreon.com/RockPaperSwordsPodcast Find out more about the Historical Novel Society (and become a member) here - https://historicalnovelsociety.org/
Lord Richter and Lady Toast return this week to discuss the good old days when you could pay someone else to drink Crown Royal for you. Richter is briefly wrong about how Wall of Ice works and seemingly forgets Uhtred's contribution to the most recent fight. Wherein your hosts talk Reacher, and then try to figure out how Reacher would fit in with Uhtred and his band of merry men, and then there's an absolutely unhinged FMK at the end. (This summary is being written 2 weeks after the episode was recorded. Things have happened. Lives have been lived.)
Lord Richter and Lady Toast return this week to discuss the ending of the Nessie fight, and are joined by Nick to go over just how perfectly fair that fight was. Then, Toast gets jealous over Uhtred's fancy kimono and Richter tries to take credit for the most dangerous foe we've come across thus far, all before having a lengthy conversation on the morals of the PCs. Lord Richter and Lady Toast return this week to make movie references and discuss the finer points of whether a corpse counts as an object for rules purposes or not. Jenny Wheeler: MJ you've developed a terrific following of historical fiction readers fascinated by the stories of ancient Britain, and we're talking basically ninth and tenth centuries, mainly Saxon Britain. Tell us first off, what is the appeal of this period for people who haven't perhaps delved into it before? M.J. Porter: The appeal of the period for me is that it's quite exciting. We're at the very beginning of what would become known as the First Viking Age. We've had our attack on Lindisfarne and then the records go a little bit quiet, we don't hear a lot more, and then all of a sudden in about the 830s we start to get a little bit of a rumble, and therefore, it's quite exciting. We haven't had the great heathen army yet of the 860s. We've got this king in Wessex who's going to be King Alfred's grandfather,
In this episode, the siblings recap “Shadow and Bone” season 2 episode 4, “Every Monstrous Thing.” They discuss the chemistry between Alina and Nikolai, debate Kaz's motivation behind his dismissal of Inej, and Libby reminds us not to sleep on the poet-loving Tolya, played by Lewis Tan. At the end, Libby shares her review for Netflix's “The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die,” aka Uhtred Son of Uhtred's movie and Ted explains his love for the 2017 film “Kong: Skull Island” (not random at all). This episode has taken almost 2 years to arrange, so we hope you really enjoy it. This week we discuss a character in England's history known as Uhtred the Bold. The Netflix show "The Last Kingdom" has a character based on this real life figure of history and we discuss some of the parallels between the two as well as some of their differences. Along the way we also sum up like 1900 years of history in England so, I hope we got that right. We truly cannot believe we have reached the end of the final season of The Last Kingdom! What an amazing ride it has been to watch Uhtred, the gangly kid from Bebbanburg grow and eventually end up back where he truly belongs! The final push of these three episodes (8,9,10) are really all about getting back to Bebbanburg and there are some harrowing moments, some old friends whose faces we've missed, some fan service in the final hours. As we came to a close on the final episode, we really couldn't be happier with how it ended. Of course we'd always love to see more of the quiet moments between characters, but this gave us the satisfying end we've all wanted for Uhtred since back in Season 1, Episode 1. We also talk about Marvel's latest endeavor with the release of the She-Hulk trailer, as well as the BIG NEWS that Season 3 of Bridgerton has officially been announced as Colin and Penelope's season - we talk about what we're hoping happens and what might happen for future seasons. This podcast episode is heavy, folks. Epsiode 5, 6 and 7 of The Last Kingdom Season 5 are not kind to our favorite characters! Each episode has truly traumatic death and our babe Uhtred is dealing with A LOT. We've also got Aelswith and Eadith cavorting around the countryside like the world's oddest couple. And Aethelhelm is still the best worst baddie of all time on this show. We also talk about the horrendous ending to Killing Eve, Daria's love for Sam Raimi's new Dr. Strange movie, how Halo is actually a pretty good show, and THAT CLIP that's on the internet of Jesse Williams (we don't condone it and we think whoever filmed it should get in trouble) but also O_O. We contain multitudes.... No book of the week this week, Jenny is exhausted getting the bookstore ready to open tomorrow (Friday May 13th!) and Daria has been writing up a storm! But next week, hopefully, we will be back with a new book rec!!! Please Subscribe/Rate/Review! If you liked the podcast recommend us to your friends! We have finally arrived at the show that brought Daria and Jenny together! We are so excited to be recapping Season 5 of The Last Kingdom. We really love this show, and that's probably going to be quite evident to you once you actually listen to this episode. Sorry not sorry. The first four episodes start off with a gentle reminder of all the characters and by the time we get to the end of episode four we're distraught and we still have six episodes to go!! It was so great seeing all our faves - Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Osferth, Eadith. As well as some new faces that add some truly great moments to the first four episodes! We also get mean about celebrities and discuss in length how everyone who attended this year's Met Gala failed to understand the theme (though maybe not quite as badly as the Kardashians misunderstood it), that Jenny is starting a romance bookstore, and how excited we are for our upcoming schedule! We've continued on with our accidental Sandra Bullock marathon after seeing The Lost City on our girls trip last weekend. A silly, punchy action rom-com that plays off of Sandra's incredible chemistry with Channing Tatum and introduces us to yet another unhinged villain turn by Daniel Radcliffe. We really loved this movie- it was laugh out loud funny and had us swooning at all the right moments. An ode to films like Romancing the Stone and showcasing a deep respect for the romance genre, The Lost City was everything we wanted it to be. We also talk about a surprising bit of news about our favorite Uhtred, Alexander Dreymon, and announce that YES! the Last Kingdom Season 5 is definitely coming next week. Ralph Waldo Emerson said; “Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.” Do you struggle with consistency? You always will, until you learn how to create habits that serve you.You must be intentional until the habits that serve you are second nature, they are your character. To quote Uhtred; "Destiny is all."www.liveitfull.com

In this week's episode Daria and Jenny are recapping Joe Wright's 2005 Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightly, Matthew Macfadyen, Tom Hollander, Judi Dench and so many more brilliant cast members - including Carrie Mulligan in her first ever movie role To recap this absolute legend in Regency media, we were joined by romance novelist Sara Whitney - who had some truly spectacular takes on Darcy, Donald Sutherland and why everyone should be watching the web series Lizzie Bennet's Diary. Getting to recap this movie was truly so fun as the final movie in our countdown to Bridgerton. For this episode's book of the week, Sara talked about her new release Tempting Fate, which is out now and we highly recommend you pick it up! A second chance romance with sass, snark and spice, we couldn't put this book down! We talk about how Jenny watched the entire season of The Last Kingdom in one day and Netflix never even checked to make sure she was still breathing (just barely because Uhtred is looking extra fiiiiiiine this season), we discuss what it would look like if Steve Kornacki was following our Darcy Bracket, and we invite Sara back to talk to us about Atonement after she watches it! She'll never look at a library the same way. As always, please Subscribe/Rate/Review! If you liked the podcast recommend us to your friends!
