Have a drink on me!

Founders Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski weren't the first independent bottlers of American whiskies, but their selections over the last four years represent an eclectic variety of whiskies from around the country. They're about to release their Fall 2024 tranche of whiskies, all at or close to ten years old, and we'll catch up with Nora and Adam on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ewan Morgan, Head of Whiskey Outreach and National Luxury Ambassador for Diageo who owns some of the largest liquor brands in the world, from Tanqueray & Casamigos, to Guiness and Non-Alcoholic brand Seedlip. But what most may not know, is that Diageo also owns a fair share of high end labels too, like Lagavulin and Mortlach. And after four decades of closure, the iconic Port Ellen distillery in the Island of Islay is reopening with Diageo in a historic moment for the Scotch industry. Ewan and I chat about the Scotch Whiskey collecting market, growing up in a family who lives and breathes the spirit, and he even takes me through a tasting of the new Port Ellen Gemini release, retailing for fifty thousand dollars. And to top it all off, we recorded at an amazing ten million dollar apartment on One Wall Street thanks to our friends at Optimist. 1 Million followers on YouTube, crowd sourced distillery, whisk(e)y sommelier courses and a sought after consultant for the industry. Let's listen up. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Tapper's Jewelry Ad] Stephen Semple: Hey everyone, Stephen Semple here. In this week's podcast, David Young is going to be interviewing Daniel Whittington. Now here's the thing. Dave and Daniel are both just such soft spoken down to earth guys that I think there's an element of just how big an empire that Daniel has built. So I want to share a little bit of the background of why you want to listen to this interview. Daniel has managed to build from nothing, the largest whiskey following on earth. He's got two channels that are the top whiskey channels on the planet with a million subscribers, which puts him in the top 1% of 1%. And it's not like he came from the whiskey industry or was a whiskey guy. He built this from scratch. He then managed to turn that into a distillery that was the first crowdsourced whiskey distillery around. Today, he is called on a regular basis by really, really big whiskey brands that want to talk to him about how to better market their whiskey. So this is a guy who is a real empire builder, and I think you'll enjoy listening to his story. Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young, and Stephen Semple is nowhere to be found. I don't know what happened to the guy. So I'm arranging my own interview and I'm sitting here with Daniel Wittington. Hey Daniel, how you doing today? Daniel Whittington: I'm good. How are you doing? Dave Young: I'm good. We wanted to talk to you about whiskey. We've actually done an episode or two about whiskey. We talked about Uncle Nearest. We've done some kind of fun things and I don't know, we're both kind of interested in whiskey. Daniel Whittington: I listened to those. Those were good. Dave Young: What we wanted to talk to you about is how you have built this little whiskey empire headquartered here in Austin, Texas, and how it got started. Well, you started as the Vice Chancellor at Wizard Academy. And just for full transparency, that's now my job and I report to you because you're the Chancellor of Wizard Academy. Just to confuse our listeners. Stephen and I have talked about Wizard Academy a bit. When you were Vice Chancellor at Wizard Academy, one of the really cool things that I remember coming to a course is that you would invite us into your office after class and like, "Hey, do you want to do a tour of Scotland? I love Scotch Whiskey and I love talking about it and sharing what I know." Where do your roots in scotch come from? Daniel Whittington: My dad's a whiskey fan. I sort of came through that door. I was a touring musician for 18 years, and my drink of choice on tour was always whiskey. As soon as I was old enough to drink, I mean, I toured for three years before I was old enough to drink, and it just became my thing. Whiskey, I like whiskey and it was usually budget, like Jameson or it was usually Irish. As a matter of fact, on one of my first solo albums, there's a song called Irish Whiskey, and that was it. But I'm a nerd and when I like things, I study them or research them and look them up. And so over the years, I sort of looked into whiskey and then I stumbled into scotch and discovered what was possible out there that wasn't Irish whiskey, the flavor possibilities. And I never looked back. When I got to Wizard Academy,

Recording Live at the recent Los Angeles Comic Con, Artist Ronald Wimberly discusses his project with the legendary Scotch Whiskey company, Ardbeg. The intersection of Scotch and comics may not seem like a natural one at first, but as Ronald discusses the project with Ardbeg National Brand Ambassador Cameron George, the overlap between these two distinctive artforms, making comics and making scotch, become apparent. You'll hear the panel in it's entirety and then a quick on-on-one with Jace and Ronald highlighting some of the points discussed on the panel. The press release for the event is below.   LOS ANGELES, CA (November 18, 2022) - Ardbeg, the famous Islay distillery known for pushing the boundaries of whisky-making, announced today its plans to bring bold, tasteful fan experiences to L.A. Comic Con from December 3-4. Showcasing the brand's first-ever, limited-edition graphic novel, titled Planet Ardbeg, whisky enthusiasts and weirdos alike will take part in an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience into the world of Ardbeg.   Planet Ardbeg features three distinct tales inspired by the flavors and origin stories of three Ardbeg expressions – Ardbeg Ten Years Old, Ardbeg An Oa and Ardbeg Wee Beastie. L.A. Comic Con attendees will immerse themselves in the 40-page sci-fi anthology through the tales of “Guardians of Oa,” “The Best Laid Schemes” and “Take it with a Grain of Sand” during a specially crafted and otherworldly drinking experience.   Attendees will be presented with three paths representing the three distinct tales drafted from the unique qualities of three whiskies: 10 YO, An Oa and Wee Beastie. The experience leads guests through a hallway into a series of inlets and rooms where they encounter various environments they interact with based on the graphic novel. The cocktails will be served during a private tasting. Guests will need to reach out to planetardbegrsvp@bhimpact.com in order to gain access to the “invite-only” post-event tasting hours taking place on Saturday and Sunday from 4pm - 6pm PT.    The graphic novel was conceived by cartoonist Ronald Wimberly, Emma Rios and Sanford Greene., each bringing their own distinctive voice and style to the project. Using three expressions in Ardbeg's Core Range as their creative launchpad, together they produced an anthology of tales as bold and unique as Ardbeg itself, featuring a land of giant botanicals and even bigger beasts. Traversing the triptych of fantastical tales is the Quantum Distiller, who journeys across time and space gathering ingredients and inspiration to concoct the ultimate dram through the three stories influenced by Ardbeg expressions.   Available online via ReserveBar, fans can also experience the three whiskies the novel is based on - Ten Years Old, An Oa and Wee Beastie - at home.   The Planet Ardbeg graphic novel will be available for purchase at the Ardbeg Distillery Visitor Centre, in select comic book shops as well as via Ardbeg.com in certain markets.  A digital version will also be available exclusively for members of the Ardbeg Committee to read (at no cost) at Ardbeg.com/planet-ardbeg.   Fans can stay up-to-date with the latest news by following Ardbeg at @ardbeg_usa on Instagram. Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts.  Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox'. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future and it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction.  Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following.    Responsible Drinking Ardbeg and The Glenmorangie Company advocate responsible drinking and suggest that drinkers savor Ardbeg whiskies in moderation and in line with recommended daily guidelines for alcohol consumption.

Is it just us, or is it hot in here? Maybe we're feeling the heat from that fire-breathing dragon everyone's been talking about. Or it could be that foursome happening over there in the tub. But really, it's probably just the sheer amount of Douglas Liang's Provenance Single Malt Scotch we imbibed while discussing The Hexer's pivotal fourth episode. Introducing not one, but two key characters—Yennefer and Jaskier—it's also the first installment of the series to directly adapt one of Andrzej Sapkowski's short stories: the dragon hunt adventure, “The Bounds of Reason.” So, with so much fiery ferocity and steamy sensuality on display, naturally we spend most of our time talking about…chicken boys?

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com One of the things I love about January is that we start hearing about the upcoming festivals and this year is no different. GABF, Savor, and more are all on the calendars. I just saw the info on Barrel & Flow https://www.barrelandflow.com/, set for August 12 -14 and it looks like it's going to be an even bigger event than last year. It was voted by USA Today readers as one of Americas favorite festivals. Sadly - I couldn't find a single resource where you could find all or most of the beer fests. Two certainly stood out. One is Google and when I searched for “Beer Fest for 2022” which covered everything local to me. I got this link https://tinyurl.com/ycx9xa9t and then I found this one at “Music Festival Wizard” isn't bad, but definitely is missing several https://www.musicfestivalwizard.com/festival-type/beer-festivals/ If you know of a better link - head to https:BoozebuddyUpdate.com and comment in today's post. What do Whisky, Scotch and Bourbon all have in common? They're incredibly popular, seem to be the be victims of counterfeiters, and age for several years. Well - that last one may no longer be true as Dolf Stockhausen is in the news again. I first saw this story in March of 2021 as he was pushing through the “Finishing process” with light to get the same characteristics out of spirits that have only matured for 7 days, instead of 7 - 12 years For the older story https://cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com/experiences/whiskies-that-are-instantly-aged-rapid-maturation-251691 and you can read the newer story with a subscription at https://www.businesspost.ie/business/meet-dolf-stockhausen-the-entrepreneur-who-says-he-can-mature-whiskey-in-a-week-and-wants-to-do-it-in-ireland-0951d922 And apparently we're all doing it wrong - ordering and drinking wine that is. According to a new survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Woodbridge Wines, and published at Martha Stewart's site, only 17 percent of wine drinkers swirl and sniff the beverage before drinking it. It seems Martha's here for us - whether you do or don't want to skip all the wine etiquette. At home, it's always ok, but what about when you're at a place that will give you a proper presentation and then expects you to sniff, swirl and sip a sample to make sure it's up to snuff - else they turn up their noses at you and your table? Get the info on the survey, find out what you may have been missing and decide if it's worth it to you! https://www.marthastewart.com/8207673/most-wine-drinkers-dont-follow-proper-etiquette-survey-2022 Next time: Some fusion and fun with celebrities! Today on The Leaders' Brief - Hong Kong's education department recently ordered all schools in the autonomous region to adopt a new curriculum that promotes Chinese patriotism in children as young as six-year-old through “story-telling, role-playing, drawing, singing, dancing and other activities.” The Hong Kong government also advised its teachers to report any breaches of the city's national security law. Since last year, Beijing has faced large scale global criticism for its security policies in Hong Kong.  A 35% drop in exports of Scotch Whiskey to the USA has led to losses of over $600 million, according to a report by the Scotch Whisky Association. The SWA report showed that a 25% tariff on single malt Scotch introduced in the U.S. in October 2019 due to an ongoing trade war with European nations on subsidies being given to aircraft maker Airbus, led to 35% dip in exports last year causing the over $600 million loss. Before the introduction of the 2019 tariff, the USA was Scotch Whiskey's biggest market with sales worth more than a billion dollars.  In a major development last week, communist Cuba with its state-controlled economy announced that it will allow private businesses to operate in most industries. The announcement came from the country's Labour minister Marta Elena Feito Cabrera at a council of ministers meeting. The council okayed the resolution that will now see private investors being allowed to participate in over 2,000 different fields, an increase from the previous 127.   About egomonk: Website | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedInegomonk is a global intelligence platform delivering asymmetric outcomes by bringing organizations closer to the communities they want to serve and the leaders they wish to influence. "Geographical indications, terroir, and socioeconomic and ecological sustainability: The case of tequila". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ana-g-valenzuela-zapata/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ana-g-valenzuela-zapata/support
