George Washington at the head of a nascent army, without such skills, relied heavily upon many clever and entrepreneurial men. The Long Island-born, Yale-educated Benjamin Tallmadge seized his moment to shine in the American Revolution. Whether fighting the British on horseback with the 2nd Continental Dragoons or uncovering their secrets through his agents in the Culper Spy Ring, Tallmadge kept up a hectic pace. You can also throw in maritime battles on the Long Island Sound and daring raids behind enemy lines. Historian Richard Welch documented Tallmadge's eventful life in his 2014 book General Washington's Commando: Benjamin Tallmadge in the Revolutionary War. On today's episode he explains the significance of this important figure in Long Island and American history. He also helps illustrate the nature of British activity in the New York region, the documentary trail he followed, and what questions were left unanswered. We're returning to Revolutionary War era Long Island on this episode. And while the Culper Spy Ring does play a part, we are turning the focus to a woman whose story and connections to the Ring were ignored and misrepresented across time until reconstructed by Claire Bellerjeau. Her book with Tiffany Yecke Brooks, Espionage and Enslavement in the Revolution, brought to life the meticulous research Bellerjeau conducted over years to illustrate Liss (Elizabeth), a woman surviving through tumultuous times. Their latest book (and non-profit organization) is Remember Liss which brings the story to students and educators. Combined with primary sources through the New York State Archives, Remember Liss is a fascinating journey through the late 17th and early 18th centuries on Long Island, New York City, and South Carolina. It uses documents, letters, and similar records to show the struggles of a woman born into slavery in Oyster Bay, her ties to Robert Townsend (Culper Jr), General John Simcoe, Major John Andre, and the lengths she would go to in order to gain her freedom. Bill is an author and historian with a number of Long Island-related history books to his credit and today we dive into his work on the Culper Spy Ring. Published in 2021, George Washington's Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide is an analysis of the Culper Spy Ring. In it, Bleyer synthesizes what is known and has been written about the Ring. He incorporates and evaluates primary sources such as the 194 extant letters regarding the spy ring as well as the works of Morton Pennypacker, Alexander Rose, Brian Kilmeade and others to tease out fact from fiction from downright fabrication. The book also includes a comprehensive guide to sites on Long Island related to the Culper Spy Ring story. In 1778, two years after the British forced the Continental Army out of New York City, George Washington and his subordinates organized a secret spy network to gather intelligence in Manhattan and Long Island. Known today as the “Culper Spy Ring,” Patriots like Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend risked their lives to report on British military operations in the region. Vital reports clandestinely traveled from New York City across the East River to Setauket and were rowed on whaleboats across the Long Island Sound to the Connecticut shore. Using ciphers, codes and invisible ink, the spy ring exposed British plans to attack French forces at Newport and a plot to counterfeit American currency. Author Bill Bleyer corrects the record, examines the impact of George Washington's Long Island spy ring and identifies Revolutionary War sites that remain today. Bill Bleyer was a prize-winning staff writer for Newsday, the Long Island daily newspaper, for thirty-three years before retiring in 2014 to write books and freelance for the newspaper and magazines. He is coauthor, with Harrison Hunt, of Long Island and the Civil War (The History Press, 2015). He is the author of Sagamore Hill: Theodore Roosevelt's Summer White House (The History Press, 2016), The Fire Island Lighthouse: Long Island's Welcoming Beacon (The History Press, 2017) and Long Island and the Sea: A Maritime History (The History Press, 2019). The Long Island native has written extensively about history for newspapers and magazines. In 1997–98, he was one of four Newsday staff writers assigned full time to “Long Island: Our Story,” a year-long daily history of Long Island that resulted in three books and filled hundreds of pages in the newspaper. His work has been published in Civil War News, Naval History, Sea History, Lighthouse Digest and numerous other magazines, as well as in the New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Toronto Star and other newspapers. Bleyer graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors in economics from Hofstra University, where he has been an adjunct professor teaching journalism and economics. Out of Washington's 6 spies in the Culper Ring, all have been identified except for one female spy that was in the group. Our guest believes she found out who that person is, and is writing a book to perhaps change history if she is right, and we are hoping she is! In part 2 of the Benedict Arnold story, after Rafe butchers the intro and drives the show off the rails, we pick up with Benedict Arnold taking command of West Point and making plans to put it, and himself, into British hands.  Quick thinking, fast horses, Alexander Hamilton, and plenty of derring-do stop the turn-over of West Point but are too late to prevent the escape of Arnold.  It's a zany story but central to the fledgling nation holding off the British long enough to cobble together a victory at Yorktown a year later. In the end, Benedict Arnold becomes synonymous with the term traitor, commands some British troops during the war, and eventually moves to England, and then Canada, and then back to England where he died in 1801.Washington, of course, went on to be the man who defined the idea of what the US President should be.Of course, you should read Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger's 2013 book George Washington's Secret Six; The Spy Ring That Saved The American Revolution.

During America's Revolutionary War, General Washington built a spy ring that helped produce the outcome we have come to know.  Clandestine intelligence gathering, sneaky correspondence, and heroic feats of daring were daily occurrences for the Culper Spy Ring.Zach and Rafe discuss elements of the ring and their accomplishments, as they are told in Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger's 2013 book George Washington's Secret Six; The Spy Ring That Saved The American Revolution. The first part of a two-part series, this episode takes us from the start of the war up to the temptations of Benedict Arnold, a master strategist but a man hounded by one of Mankind's most basic flaws: the desire for prestige.A typical Bufnagle: the Podcast episode, Rafe talks too much while Zach derails the education with stories from A Knights Tale and American Treasure and with comparisons to Tolkien.  Listeners should find this a quintessential Buf episode: serious educational but with just enough shenanigans to make you want to go look things up for yourself!

Author Bill Bleyer corrects the record, examines the impact of George Washington's Long Island spy ring and identifies Revolutionary War sites that remain today. https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Products/9781467143479

In this episode, Hailee is bewitched with the Culper Ring, George Washington's secret spy ring credited with turning the course of the war and enabling an American victory. The Culper Spy Ring operated successfully in and around New York City for five years and the informants were never discovered. Even George Washington himself was unaware of their identities. Along with spies like Hercules Mulligan and James Armistead, the Culper Ring was responsible for preventing the plan of one of history's most notorious traitors and saving George Washington's life more than once. Kristen Nyitray, Director of Special Collections and University Archives at Stony Brook, and Chris Filstrup, former Dean of SBU Libraries, discuss their pursuit and acquisition of two letters by George Washington to Benjamin Tallmadge about the operations of the spy ring. You'll hear about Washington's hands-on approach to spycraft and the dangers the Ring faced operating out of enemy territory. Kristen also describes the Culper Alliance that formed betwen Stony Brook, NYS Assemblyman Steve Englebright, and local cultural heritage organizations from the Three Village Historical Society to Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay. From the shores of Setauket to the auction room at Christie's, this story reveals the continuing evolution of the Culper Spy Ring's historical significance.    Further Research George Washington and the Culper Spy Ring (SBU Libraries) Spies in the Archives: Acquiring Revolutionary War Spy Letters Through Community Engagement by Kristen Nyitray and Sally Stieglitz Raynham Hal Museum Three Village Historical Society Music: Fife and Drums by Kevin MacLeod licensed under: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Washington's Spies by Alexander Rose (find in a library) Past Culper Spy Ring/TURN episodes on the Long Island History Project

If you were to name the most famous Floyd on Long Island before the outbreak of the Revolution, chances are it would not have been William Floyd. Yet today, William has a parkway named after him and his home is part of the National Park system while Richard is erased from history. Wonder why? Join local historian Matthew Montelione as he relates the history of American Loyalist Richard IV and how the Revolution drove him apart from his family, his neighbors and his nation. Richard's story is part of our special series of episodes looking into Revolutionary War-era Long Island in honor of the final season of AMC's Turn: Washington's Spies. It turns out that Richard's fate is woven into that of the Culper Spy Ring. Richard's brother Benjamin lived in Seatauket and had some dubious ties to Abraham Woodhull. And not only did Brewster Caleb make it a point to raid Floyd's estate, Benjamin Tallmadge led a party of dragoons right to his doorstep, besieging the neighboring British Fort St. George on the Mastic peninsula. Made up of a small tight-knit group of friends and relatives, the Ring provided valuable information on British activities that helped George Washington outmaneuver and out-spy a much more powerful enemy. All of this was conducted in occupied territory, a Long Island beset by British troops with no love for the population they were meant to protect and raiders from the Sound who preyed on Loyalist and Patriot alike.
