On this episode I talk to Dr. Minette Riordan. Minette helps creatives build profitable businesses through her coaching and her membership program called The Creative Business Accelerator. She’s a self proclaimed productivity geek and helps creatives with their shiny object syndrome. She helps them focus on monetizing one idea at a time. Minette says that carving out time for creative play and not turning every idea into a business is the key to success. Give yourself permission to work on things that are just for you. She talks about being a multipotentialite and how we should be giving kids space to explore, instead of pressuring them into picking one thing that to be when they grow up. Minette is the best selling author of Artful Marketer and hosts art retreats for creatives. Her Creative Business Accelerator program is for the multipassionate creative to get accountability, structure and support. Creative People start their business because they have a lot of passion but they usually need help with structure. Today on the podcast, we talk to April Hardeman, owner of Make It Rein, a company that does technology operations for equine businesses, helping them with email marketing, social media management and all of their other online business needs. April’s husband is in the Army and they are currently stationed in Germany. They have a small daughter, so being able to operate a business from home allows her to have more flexibility. April talks about how she can work from anywhere in the world as she keeps business owners in the equine industry up to speed in the technology world so they can focus on their horses. After graduating college with an accounting degree, she worked in the corporate world for awhile and had side gigs doing social media and marketing for a variety of businesses. She wanted to stay home when her daughter was born so she decided to dive into the world of business on her own. She created a website, and after posting just one blog post, she got her first customer. She started out helping anyone and everyone and then narrowed it down to her niche in the equine industry, since those were the customers she attracted because she knew their language. April proves that there are other opportunities available to horse lovers other than being a vet or working in the field with the animals or as a trainer, which doesn’t offer location flexibility. April has a podcast called Rein in Your Herd that provides information to the equine industry to help them learn more about the technology. She shares how sometimes she works so much on her clients’ businesses that she can’t find the time to work on her own business, so she’s learned to designate specific times for building her own projects. April has a great tip on how to attend networking events as an introvert. Bring something that is a conversation starter. She brought a mug, that had a picture of a horse on it, to an event and it helped her meet a ton of people she wouldn’t have otherwise talked to. She has great advice for anyone that wants a business but thinks it’s in too small of a niche industry. Do the research and just get started. It will evolve anyway, so just take massive action to get going, even if it’s messy. If you’ve ever thought about running an online business but wanted to focus on a particular niche, April proves that it’s possible to choose something you love and then create a business around that passion. Have you ever thought that maybe you’re not really as good at something as people think you are? And people are going to find out that you’ve been fooling them?Or that people are going to think you’re a fraud, a fake?Maybe you give away your services and products because, if people pay you for them, they will be expecting more value from you, more than you actually provide? Are you always looking for validation from others? You’re waiting for people to tell you how good your idea is and if they don’t, you feel like a failure? These are all forms of Imposter Syndrome. And Tara Bradford shares with us how to overcome the mental blocks that are holding us back from living our best lives. Imposter syndrome is the belief that you are not good at what you’re doing, that you've fooled everyone, and that you'll be found out. Tara went from being an ICU nurse to being an entrepreneur and Emotional Resilience Coach, when she discovered that helping people was her passion. Once she was able to start doing what she loved, people started noticing how happy she seemed and asked her to share what she was doing. Why was she so happy? Because she was doing all the things she wanted to do. And she finally stopped worrying about what everyone would think. She stopped feeling selfish for wanting to do things for herself. Tara defines what it means to her, to do the work you love... it brings you joy, you love doing it, people are asking you about it, and you can get paid to do it. When she started for her business, she was featured in the media every two weeks for two years. People started telling her how good she was at writing. Then imposter syndrome set in.She's worked with people in the early stages of their businesses, when they feel like none of their past experience counts toward their new thing that they’re doing. They are side hustling and they feel like they are less credible and that people won't take them seriously because it’s not their full time job. They’re telling everyone about their idea and they’re waiting for people to tell them it’s a good idea and offer to pay them. But nobody is going to offer to pay for something that they can get for free. Continually giving away your service for free affects how you value yourself. You start to feel like you don't deserve to get paid for your thing. It’s okay in the beginning, to barter in exchange for a testimonial, but limit yourself. Tara shares that, when things come easily for you, you don’t understand the value it has for someone else who thinks it’s hard. How do you overcome imposter syndrome? By focusing on our strengths. Have other people do the stuff you aren’t good at. Then you become more confident in what you’re doing. When people have imposter syndrome they tend to quit right before they get to the finish line.
