The orchid family of flowering plants

I'm quite happy to touch on this little trouble inside the house: what is a good spot to grow certain plants? Julie and I have been struggling to get a few Orchids growing inside. One of them is Phalaenopsis —the Moth Orchid— and another one is Oncidium, especially the “Kandy Dancer” I fell in love with when working in Sri Lanka. Both are a real pain to get going: tried a north-facing window, an eastern aspect, west, and nothing worked to get these plants growing, let alone flowering!! The Irony is that our daughter just chucked them in a south facing bay windowsill and simply couldn't stop them flowering! They get a few seconds of morning sun, are covered in steam (it's a kitchen bay window), and often get warm ovens heating the site. Guess what! We tried it too: south bay window in kitchen, etc, etc. Fertilised them with Orchid Food, spoke to them, read stories at night, etc, ect... NOTHING! Yes, we read the books and reduced the moisture regime, got solid fertiliser, liquid fertiliser, extra Potash, no potash, more Nitrogen, less Nitrogen, saw their root zones and decided that Phosphate might be the answer... NADA! Our south side bay window is filled with thriving plants, everything grows brilliantly here, except the bloody Orchids! We finally did get a little bit of hope from an Oncidium cutting (no comment on the origin of that cutting, by the way). Our next attempt: west window, afternoon sun every day, etc, etc. It's tiny, but it's alive! The point is that sometimes these things happen when you try to grow certain specimens, they don't always follow the suggestions in the book. The fertiliser regime is quite often hyped-up and the commonest method of killing your plants is by simply over-watering the plants and their roots. So… try some neglect. Water them when you realise you've forgotten to do so for months! And when your daughter asks, “what is fertiliser?” try not to get shitty, just learn from that and embrace another tactic. YoutubeFacebookXInstagramBioNORTHERN KENTUCKY – Orchid in the Ivy, the hard-hitting alternative rock triofronted by Brett Scharf, is turning heads with the re-release of their fiery, pop-punkrendition of “Beds Are Burning.” Originally recorded some time ago, the band recentlyremixed and relaunched the track to pave the way for their upcoming five-songEP—proving that rock is far from dead and Scharf's creative fire is still blazing.“We did a new mix,” says Scharf of the Midnight Oil classic. “We kinda did it a whileago, and we basically did a whole remix... people will maybe recognize it a little bit andthen kinda get your feet wet again with it—and then go with the five song EP after that.”The result? A faster, sharper, and more aggressive version of the politically chargedanthem—reborn through Orchid in the Ivy's melodic punk-rock lens. “I always thought ithad a great groove to it,” Scharf explains. “I was messing around with it one day andjust thought, ‘God, if we sped this up, this would be more like almost a punk rock tune.' Idon't think they realized how kind of heavy and punk rock that song could actually be.”For Scharf, who once toured alongside now-household names like Fall Out Boy andMotion City Soundtrack in his early band Spindle, Orchid in the Ivy represents a rebirth. After years of navigating the ups and downs of multiple projects, including RosemaryDevice, Scharf stepped into the role of lead singer “more out of necessity than anythingelse.” That unplanned shift uncovered a sound—and voice—that finally felt right.“I put some vocals down on a couple songs and asked my drummer what he thought. He liked it, and we just kept going forward that way,” says Scharf.Since forming in 2013, Orchid in the Ivy has remained fiercely self-sufficient. The bandrecords everything at Scharf's own studio, allowing them the space to experiment andevolve. “We were trying to really find out our sound,” Scharf says. “I think in the last fiveor six years, we really found our voice.”That voice blends the emotional punch of Brand New's The Devil and God Are RagingInside Me with the melodic grit of Alkaline Trio's Crimson and the urgency of RiseAgainst. The upcoming EP, while not including “Beds Are Burning,” follows hot on itsheels, with singles set to roll out every six to eight weeks.“There's a little more emotion involved in this one,” Scharf notes of the new material.“The stuff I've been writing for this EP—and even the next one—is just a little morepersonal. With everything going on in the world, it just seems like a chaotic time.”Though Scharf's journey has spanned decades and many stages, his passion hasnever faded. “The older I got, the better the writing got,” he says. “There's always beenthat inspiration of finding new music, being creative. That's always been a passion ofmine.”And for fans of raw, heartfelt rock music, the message is clear. “Rock's not dead,”Scharf insists. “I hope we can burst through the scene and break some barriers again. There's still a huge audience out there—and just because major labels aren't signing it,doesn't mean they're not there. That's what rock has always been about: breaking downbarriers.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

The orchid family is one of the largest and most diverse family of flowering plants and widely recognized for their attractive and fragrant flowers. Even though we can now find orchids for sale in several big box stores, the mention of orchids often brings out thoughts of exotic tropical locations.

On this week's Keepin It Real, is Cam talking to his plants? Talking to himself. Both? And what's the message? ----- I use this commentary quite a bit as therapy. If I'm trying to work something out, I've learned that writing about it then speaking it helps in some way or another. One of the most recent themes that regular listeners may recognize is this transition into whatever the next chapter of my life will be. Every morning, the mirror reflects the changes taking place on the outside and I wonder when the change will impact the inner parts of me. My mother used to get up in the mornings, get her coffee, and in her robe go out onto her back patio and check on her plants. I remember her bending over them and touching some of them and then talking to them a bit. Maybe she'd clip a flower whose bloom had faded and offer some encouragement to the plant to send her another flower. I thought it was ridiculous up until a few weeks ago when I realized I was now doing it, too. A coffee, a step onto the patio, a visit to my orchids that, people tell me, should be inside but sure appear happier outside. My one-year-old potted lemon tree that is putting on so much growth but, as yet, no lemons. I give it a short motivational speech – you can do it lemon tree. I see your potential. You have what it takes. You're a good-looking tree and I can tell your lemons will be great. Focus. Stay the course. I'll take care of you. Then on to the staghorn fern that hangs at the corner of the patio that's doing so well. I gently touch the fronds and compliment the fern on such strong and green shoots. My last visit every morning is to my oncidium orchid, better known as a dancing lady orchid. That orchid and I have been together a long time. It grows well. It appears happy. I changed its soil earlier in the spring and put it back in the same pot and gave it a good bit of orchid food. It quickly put on big new leaves and it continues to show, from all I can see on the outside, that it's happy. But it hasn't bloomed in a long while. I check every day for a tiny bloom spike to show me that it's truly happy and wants to express its joy, but nothing. And I say to it, “You have everything I know how to give you for you to thrive. But it's like you're waiting for something more, some big out side force to identify that there's something inside of you that you need to take that next big leap forward to express your joy. You're waiting for something to excite you and tease you into blooming again, for you to give the world what you know is in there, aching to come out and share. But you're not sure what's in there and how to get it out. When you were younger and smaller, getting you to bloom wasn't hard. Today, though, I can see that inside you, something missing.” And I take my coffee back inside, and sit quietly for a while, realizing what I've just said. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.

In 1818, a curious root arrived in a small English village, tucked—seemingly by accident—in a packing case mailed from Brazil. The amateur botanist who cultivated it soon realized that he had something remarkable on his hands: an exceptionally rare orchid never before seen on British shores. It arrived just as “orchid mania” was sweeping across Europe and North America, driving a vast plant trade that catered to wealthy private patrons as well as the fast-growing middle classes eager to display exotic flowers at home. Dubbed Cattleya labiata, the striking purple-and-crimson bloom quickly became one of the most coveted flowers on both continents. As tales of the flower's beauty spread through scientific journals and the popular press, orchid dealers and enthusiasts initiated a massive search to recover it in its natural habitat. In The Lost Orchid: A Story of Victorian Plunder and Obsession (Harvard University Press, 2025) Dr. Sarah Bilston illuminates the story of this international quest, introducing the collectors and nurserymen who funded expeditions, the working-class plant hunters who set out to find the flower, the South American laborers and specialists with whom they contracted, the botanists who used the latest science to study orchids in all their varieties, and the writers and artists who established the near-mythic status of the “lost orchid.” The dark side of this global frenzy was the social and environmental harm it wrought, damaging fragile ecologies on which both humans and plants depended. Following the human ambitions and dramas that drove an international obsession, The Lost Orchid is a story of consumer desire, scientific curiosity, and the devastating power of colonial overreach. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In today's episode I sit down with Dr. Thomas Boyce, professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at UCSF, about his 40 years of research on temperamental differences in children, specifically focusing on his concept of 'orchid' and 'dandelion' children. Dr. Boyce explains how while most children are resilient like dandelions, a significant minority are sensitive 'orchids' who react more strongly to their environments. We discuss Boyce's research, the biological underpinnings of these temperamental differences, and how different environments impact these children.I WROTE MY FIRST BOOK! A newly available kind of genetic testing, called polygenic embryo screening, promises to screen for conditions that can include cancer, obesity, autism, bipolar disorder, even celiac disease. These conditions are informed by many genetic variants and environmental factors - so companies like Orchid and Heliospect assign risk scores to each embryo for a given condition. These tests are expensive, only available through IVF, and some researchers question how these risk scores are calculated. But what would it mean culturally if more people tried to screen out some of these conditions? And how does this connect to societal ideas about whose lives are meaningful? Brittany gets into it with Vardit Ravitsky, senior lecturer at Harvard Medical School and president of the Hastings Center, a non-partisan bioethics research center, and Katie Hasson, associate director of the Center for Genetics and Society, a nonprofit public affairs organization that advocates for responsible use of genetic technology.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Some kids thrive anywhere. Others need more care to flourish. In this episode, Justin and Kylie Coulson explore the powerful metaphor of “dandelion and orchid” children—an idea shared by clinical psychologist Dr. Jamie Northam. They discuss how different temperaments impact mental health, why parenting must be tailored, and how to know when your child might need additional support. KEY POINTS: Dandelions are resilient children who thrive in most environments; orchids are more sensitive and require specific conditions to grow well. Evidence-based parenting strategies should be adaptable—not one-size-fits-all. Be cautious of advice from social media; always ask: Is there evidence? Are there clear steps? Does this suit my child? The “Three D’s” of mental health concern: Distress, Dysfunction, and Deviation from developmental norms. Good parenting meets a child where they are—not where we wish they were. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:“Parenting isn’t one-size-fits-all—what works for one child may fail completely with another.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Full interview with Dr. Jamie Northam (airing Saturday) happyfamilies.com.au for evidence-based parenting resources ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Reflect on your child’s temperament—are they a dandelion or an orchid? Before following parenting advice, check if it's evidence-based, clearly explained, and appropriate for your child. Watch for the “Three D’s”: distress, dysfunction, and deviation from expected development. Adapt your parenting approach based on each child’s needs—not just what worked in the past. If concerned, seek professional support early—mental health matters at every age. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Can one device transform the future of fat grafting? Join Dr. Grant Stevens on this compelling episode of The Technology of Beauty as he welcomes Dr. David Kirn, the innovative mind behind the Orchid device—a cutting-edge, all-in-one system engineered to simplify and optimize the fat grafting process. Designed with both efficiency and predictability in mind, Orchid enables surgeons to harvest, purify, and re-inject fat using a completely mechanical, self-contained system that eliminates the need for centrifuges, decanting, or a complex setup. In this episode, David explains how his years in aesthetic surgery and a longstanding frustration with the inefficiencies of traditional fat grafting led to the development of this revolutionary tool. By using an FDA-approved absorbent material to remove oil and aqueous content, the Orchid device delivers a consistently high-quality fat graft with minimal waste and maximum viability. With each cycle taking only minutes, the system allows for fat grafting procedures to be performed in-office, significantly cutting down time and overhead for physicians while offering long-lasting, natural results for patients.David also shares insights into the FDA pathway, future product expansions, and how Orchid could position itself as a market disruptor—not just in facial fat grafting, but also in breast and body applications.
