So if I'm feeling this way, anxious, angry, sad, whichever, I look at my thoughts. Like, what am I thinking about? What's making my feelings this? And then I realize I am in charge. I can change the thought. And then I change my feeling. And that changes the emotion around it. So that is all from meditation that I've learned this. Thoughts on Breathing I've always known that breathing is important, but I had a brain tumor six years ago, and I needed to go in for surgery, and it just shattered my world. It was incredibly scary. And I had a friend who was studying mindfulness, and she said she'd come over three times a week for a couple of months before the surgery, and she was going to help me with breathing. And I was like, how are we going to do that many hours about breathing? Like you go in, you go out. And she said no, you're going to see. So she taught me a lot about breathing. And one of the exercises is called Sweet 16. I use it whenever I'm getting anxious, I just take that pause. So basically it's. You take a deep breath in and a deep breath out, and then you hold your breath for four seconds, or the count of four beats. Then you inhale for four beats, hold it for four beats, and then you let the air out for four beats, and hold it for four. So you hold for four, inhale for four, hold it for four, exhale for four. And you start again. And that was incredibly important. Even though I'm an artist, I do enjoy structure. So the breathing is what gives me the focus when I'm meditating so that when I do have a fleeting thought, I can be like, Oh, look, there was a thought, or if I have a feeling that comes up, Oh, look at that feeling; okay, let's keep breathing. Suggested Resources Book: When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron Book: The Artists Way by Julia Cameron Book: The Art of Organizing: An Artful Guide to an Organized Life by Nicole Gabai App: Insight Timer Bullying Story I am currently in a situation where I've been dealing with a lot of bullying. And in the beginning it was painful because  I took it personally and thought, Oh my gosh, what is wrong with me? And it definitely has shifted for me with my meditations because I'm learning in meditation that my thoughts do not define me. My feelings do not define me. Those are all passing things. And my being stays intact no matter what.  And that's where the non-judgment comes in. That's where the self-acceptance comes in. And then the bullying doesn't hurt so much anymore. It's not pleasant. But you know what? I have a distance from it now. I can put distance between myself and that person. And what I've learned is, The bullying that's happening is really about that person. It's how they feel about themselves. It's how they talk to themselves. That's really what it is. It's not about me. And that is through meditation. I've been able to learn that with experiencing when I'm in meditation, now I can bring it to my life and say, wow, that person really has a hard time because look at what they're saying and doing. January is Get Organized Month. With that one of the best places to start is by taking a home inventory or organizing other areas around the home. In today's episode, Beth is talking with the past president of NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers), Susie Hayman to discuss organization and what we can do to be better organized. We will cover how Get Organized Month came to be, how HomeZada can help you become better organized around your home. We will discuss physical and digital organization. We will discuss the benefits of being organized and how NAPO members help homeowners. We will discuss the value of organizing all year round. If homeowners need help organizing, we will also discuss how to find the help you need. Getting organized can start with simple steps and can also be done by yourself or with help.   IN THIS EPISODE: [02:20] More about Susie [05:58] NAPO's Get Organized Month [12:41] Benefits of being more organized [20:15] How to stay organized throughout the year [25:25] How NAPO can help you get more organized   KEY TAKEAWAYS: January is Get Organized Month! NAPO helps people improve their lives by helping them create environments that support productivity, general health, and wellbeing in all areas of their homes (physical and digital). Being organized saves you time and money. If you know where things are, whether it's something physical or whether it's something digital, you're not going to buy it again and you will be able to find it easily. When you are organized you have more time to do those things you want to do. Organization helps restore a sense of order and control. Thus, you reduce your level of stress. You get rid of that horrible feeling of overwhelm and you're more efficient and productive in everything you do. In order to get and stay organized, take small steps. You don't (and can't) organize everything in one day, one week, or even one month. Just take one step at a time, one small portion at a time. The theme of Season 4, “Happy Hour and Coffee Date Conversations”, continues in this week’s episode with Kelly Johnson. Kelly found Jill Devine’s podcast, Two Kids and A Career, when she heard Episode 46 with Emily Martinez. Kelly decided she wanted to introduce herself to Jill through an email: Hi Jill, I wanted to share a little bit about me and my organizing business. I grew up in Ballwin, attended Parkway West high school, then went to college at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO and moved back to the St. Louis area right after graduation.  My major is in Housing and Interior Design. I worked full-time in the corporate world for about 10 years (mostly as a legal recruiter at a couple of law firms), but after having my daughter, I really wanted more balance in my life. I started to think about what I really enjoyed doing and did some soul searching. I came across the industry of professional organizing. I spoke with some professional organizers, joined NAPO (National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals) and started my business, Organized Interiors LLC in October of 2019. I am still new and continue to learn through NAPO University courses and other wonderful professional organizers in the St. Louis area who I have been lucky enough to work with. I love working with busy families and I would say my two favorite spaces to organize are pantries and paly areas.  I live in University City with my husband (Ryan), daughter (Carly), dog (Miller) and cat (Ziggy). Together, we enjoy traveling, going on walks, finding new, fun activities and snacking! I am an avid reality TV fan and I also enjoy running, hiking and spending time with family and friends. I would love to work with you at some point, so please let me know if you have any ideas of how we can support each other. I look forward to hearing back from you! Thanks! Jill loves organization and considers that her love language, so she had to invite Kelly on the podcast! The two women talked about Kelly’s shift from the corporate world to entrepreneurship, women supporting women, adapting her business to meet safety protocols during a pandemic, having a 2-year-old, and so much more. Kelly’s business, Organized Interiors LLC, offers home organization, move management, home styling and personal assistant services. You can call Kelly at 314-608-0113 or email: kelly@organizedinteriorsstl.com. New to Season 4, the Supermom Shoutout! Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Allison of O’Fallon, MO! Her friend, Michelle, nominated her and said: I wanted to nominate my friend, Allison. Allison is a single, Supermom.  She has two daughters, Nora (age 5) and Natalie (age 1). Allison is a Treasury Manger for RGA and balances a stressful job and two adorable little girls. When Natalie was born, Allison became a single mother.  While it was difficult, she rose above the challenges and is a rockstar! She takes Nora to dance every week, schedules creative and play time for both girls, makes time for family dinner every Sunday with her parents, brother, and nephews, while continuing to be a strong leader at her office.  She is the best girlfriend who offers sound advice and a great listener. She makes it look so easy. I am so proud of her! She is a wonderful mother, girlfriend, daughter and sister!  Allison – YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom. Buh bye clutter! Robyn Reynolds swears we can organize ANYTHING that's worth keeping. This single mom with a can-do spirit and no-nonsense attitude whips Ellie's haphazard "put away" habits into shape. She teaches us how to streamline our kitchen in order to turn our morning routines into a well-caffeinated machine. She walks us through the process of getting our closets under control (and saving money in the process!), and gives an excellent mom hack for how the heck to keep track of what-you-put-where in all those darn diaper bag pockets. In this podcast, you'll also laugh at what a rainy day means at Robyn's L.A. home and how to keep your cool with home maintenance issues, like when the 1-800 customer service for your broken washing machine is leaving you high and dry. Bravo TV, are you listening? Cause Atomic Moms is pretty sure that Robyn Reynolds, Long Island's answer to Marie Kondo, needs her own show! Using her childhood home as her personal workshop, she found joy in organizing and re-organizing every room, closet, cabinet and drawer to perfection. As an adult, Robyn continued to hone her skills as a fashion merchandiser and a personal assistant. After a short-lived career as an actress, Robyn found herself at a professional crossroad. She decided to take a leap of faith and follow her lifelong dream of creating an environment where organizing was her focus and Organize2Harmonize was born. As a long-time member of NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers), a Certified Professional Organizer and a Golden Circle Member, Robyn has steadily grown her business into a recognized and trusted name in the organization industry. In addition to being quoted in the Huffington Post, Woman’s Day magazine and numerous other publications, Robyn has also worked on the television show “Hoarders.” She just published her first book and is working on another one.
