Andrew Donohue, managing editor of Reveal, from The Centre for Investigative Reporting discusses one of the organisations collaborative multiplatform investigations ‘Rape on the Nightshift’. The project investigates the sexual abuse of immigrant females in America's janitorial industry, specifically, the vulnerability of these women to sexual harassment and rape. It also delves into the companies, which in many cases have failed to protect their workforce. As well as being a gripping investigation, it’s a multiplatform story, produced as a radio and video documentary, as well as a long-form text piece. The online landing page for the investigation has an elegant watch, read or listen option and whereas we often look at projects which incorporate a number of mediums to tell a single story - this is a single story which allows viewers to choose the way they prefer to consume the story. We discuss the approach that the reporting team took and audience engagement. Deadlines for submissions are: Professional Grant – Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time Student Grants – Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time. The Professional Winner will receive a $20,000 grant to assist in the production of the proposed project. The First Place Student Winner will received tuition for one semester at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse, NY. The recipient of the First Place Student Grant may enroll in 9 to 12 credit hours of courses. It does not need to be part of a degree seeking sequence. We think of it as an opportunity to uniquely expand your story telling capabilities. The First Place Student Winner will also receive a $1000 cash grant to help produce the proposed body of work and $500 will be awarded to the student’s academic department. Up to four (4) Award of Excellence Winners will be named, at the judges' discretion. Award of Excellence winners will receive $1500 that may be applied toward tuition at Syracuse University or they may choose to attend one of the following workshops: a MediaStorm one-day workshop, a Momenta Photo Workshop or a Kalish Workshop, which is provided by The Gilka Grant.
