Domestic workers' pay rises in 2026: Here's what South African households must know

The Department of Employment and Labour has announced the latest updates to South Africa's National Minimum Wage, affecting domestic workers, farm workers, and other applicable employees. Following recommendations from the National Minimum Wage Council, the rate has been increased by 5%, moving from R28.79 to R30.23 per ordinary hour worked. For a standard 45-hour work week, the increase translates to a weekly wage of R1,264.85. When calculated over a month of 4.3 weeks (or 195 hours), the minimum becomes R5,894.40. For households employing domestic workers on a more typical 160-hour month, the minimum monthly wage rises to R4,834, up from R4,606 in 2025. Households must also note that South Africa's minimum wage laws require employers to pay for at least four hours of work each day, regardless of the actual hours worked. This sets the true daily minimum for domestic workers at approximately R121, an increase from R115 last year. Domestic workers have been fully covered by the National Minimum Wage since 2022. However, data suggests that many workers are still earning below the legal minimum. According to BusinessTech, median salaries reported by Stats SA show that domestic workers earn around R2,350 per month, equivalent to R14.69 per hour for a 160-hour month. This is less than half of the 2026 minimum wage.

Back-to-school shock: Why educating a child now costs more than ever

Stacey Norman

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2026 9:12

As children return to classrooms across South Africa, parents are facing a tough financial reality. The back-to-school period has become one of the most demanding times for household budgets, often rivalling or even exceeding December holiday spending. Recent research confirms what many families already feel: education-related costs are increasing at a rate well above general inflation. Uniforms dominate the expense list School uniforms have become the biggest financial burden for parents preparing for the academic year. A basic uniform set, including items such as blazers, jerseys, shirts, and trousers or skirts, now costs upwards of R2,700. Once shoes, school bags, and additional accessories are added, the total climbs to around R5,000 per child. The pressure does not stop at buying the basics. Many parents deliberately purchase uniforms several sizes too big, hoping they will last for more than one year as children grow. This strategy highlights just how stretched household finances have become when it comes to these annual expenses. Stationery requirements add complexity Stationery lists have also grown more detailed and restrictive. Schools often insist on specific brands or types of supplies, leaving parents with little flexibility to shop around for cheaper alternatives. What once included only pencils and notebooks now extends to geometry sets, calculators, dictionaries, and other specialised items. These requirements can add roughly R1,000 to the total bill, pushing overall back-to-school costs to around R6,000 per child, before transport, lunch money, or after-school care are even considered. Multiple children multiply the burden For families with more than one school-going child, the financial strain increases dramatically. Each child needs their own full set of uniforms, stationery, and fees. In these households, total back-to-school costs can easily run into tens of thousands of rands, placing immense pressure on budgets, particularly after the festive season. School fees create additional pressure School fees remain another major source of stress. Some schools require significant upfront payments before learners can start classes. Parents have also reported unexpected increases at enrolment, with fees rising at the last minute, leaving families scrambling to find extra funds with little warning. Practical strategies for managing costs Despite these challenges, many parents have adopted creative ways to cope. One common approach is buying stationery throughout the year when items are on special, spreading the cost instead of absorbing it all in January. Others choose to deposit small amounts into uniform shop accounts during the year. This creates a dedicated fund that cannot be used elsewhere, helping parents feel more prepared and reducing the financial shock when the school year begins. The broader economic impact The rising cost of education reflects wider economic pressures facing South African households. When essential expenses such as school uniforms and supplies grow faster than inflation, families are forced to make difficult financial trade-offs. This has broader implications for access to education and long-term equality. Each back-to-school season now serves as a reminder of how costly education has become. As prices continue to climb, parents are required to be more resourceful than ever, balancing tight budgets while still ensuring their children are equipped for learning and success.

Together, they reveal how thoughtful engineering and collaboration turned a spec rejection into a design triumph, delivering R5 insulation performance (U-Value 0.2) and lasting visual impact. From the installation process to the "quiet wow" of natural light done right, this episode shines a light on how buildings can be both beautiful and brilliantly functional. In this interview, BizNews editor Alec Hogg takes a deep dive into lessons learned during the incredible journey of Blue Label co-founder and co-CEO Brett Levy. At 28, he was once the youngest CEO of any JSE-listed company when he and brother Mark too the company public. Now worth R11 billion, Brett's journey has been defined by Blue Label's R5.5bn acquisition of debt-laden CellC SA's third-largest mobile company. This deal caused acute indigestion, lasting seven years, and required the entire purchase price to be written off. An older and wiser Levy shares how both Blue Label and Cell C have emerged stronger from the challenges - and are poised for a magical future.

Aero is... not everything? Forget about the wind tunnel, kammtail tube shapes, and 65mm deep rims because Cervelo's just-released R5 proves that light isn't just right, it's also fun. Alvin has been testing the new climbing-focused R5 and tells us what it's like to ride and why it might make more sense than an objectively faster aero bike, especially if you swap the tires. We headed off-road as Specialized debuted the 4th-generation Diverge gravel bike in Slovenia, and tech editor Josh Ross was there to find out how it performs. He explains all the updates, including room for 2.2" wide tires, its evolved geometry, and why it has an even bigger hole. We also dig into Specialized's decision to spec every model with their Future Shock suspension stem, and how it compares to a heavier and more complex suspension fork. We also discuss the latest updates to the Garmin 550 and 850 computers as well as Garmin's Rally power meter pedals, now available with rechargeable batteries. And last but not least: the Lazer VeloVox begs the question of who among us needs walkie talkies built into their helmets.

Y me encantó.

The Tour de France is in full swing, and with it comes a flood of tech news, wild bikes and even wilder French car park encounters with pros and rival journalists. In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, Jack Luke is joined by Simon von Bromley – fresh from the grande départ in Lille – to unpack this year's biggest tech stories so far. Top of the list is Jonas Vingegaard's brand-new Cervélo R5, which Simon was first to spot. It's lighter, sleeker, and could be key in the GC battle. They also dig into Tadej Pogačar's possible mountain time trial machine, the new Merida Reacto, and the surprising trend-bucking ENVE SES 4.5 Pro wheels ridden by Pog. There's also a peek behind the curtain at how BikeRadar covers the Tour, plus a look at last week's top-performing story and our weekly ‘rant' courtesy of Michael Woods, who thinks pro riders should be wearing hockey-style protective gear.

Pauline really enjoys driving around town in her new R5. But what about the power? I become a motoring journalist in this episode. In the notes that accompany the transcript, we're going to highlight the typical turns of speech in our conversation. We'll also look at the best strategy for learning the conjugation of two verbs used in this episode and very common in French. What is an optimal strategy? Well, the minimum amount of learning for the maximum amount of use in real life. Canon Auto-Focus Explained – 2025 Update

Behind the Shot - Video

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 11, 2025 190:53

NOTE: This is not an official Canon USA show. This is a podcast first and foremost, available in both audio-only or video, and the video is also placed on YouTube. My hope is that by going through all of the AF options one-at-a-time, in extreme detail, you will be able to get more out of the camera system you have. My first show with Rudy Winston, a Technical Marketing Consultant for Canon USA, was back in February of 2022 for "Canon Auto-Focus Explained", so almost exactly 3 years ago. To date, it's still one of the favorite shows that I've done. I find that as photographers our relationship with auto-focus isn't always a great one. It's so easy to say "the camera missed focus", or "it front or back focused". The problem is that's not the case more often than not. Don't misunderstand me, these issues are real - that's why micro adjustments exist. Cameras and lenses are not perfect, and the software that runs anything today can have issues, but focus issues often relate to the end user not having the AF system configured correctly, or not understanding how the system really works. That's how the first show with Rudy came to be, and to say that was popular is an understatement: To date it's had roughly: 453,000 views on YouTube, in addition to all the views in the video and audio-only podcast feeds. But when we recorded that show the R3 was brand new, and it wasn't widely available. So I used my R5 for the menu examples in that show, and while we did talk about the AF settings unique to the newer R3, I almost immediately had people asking for an updated video. Since then, we've seen the R6 Mark 2 and the R5 Mark 2 come out, and again, lots of people have requested an update to cover all of the newer Auto Focus features. My thing is, it doesn't make sense to do a video specific to each camera model, there's too much overlap, so I wanted to wait until the R1 had actually been released - and it was in November of last year, it started hitting stores in Nov of 2024. So today, we are going to do basically the same thing that we did 3 years ago, we're going to go through all of the AF menus, and describe every single command and option for you in detail. For this show I am going to use the new Canon R1 for the menu examples, which needs a little explanation. When I used the R5 last time I had some people complain that I was using a body out of their price range, while others complained I wasn't using the R3. So, let me try to explain my decision making process… The higher end bodies have features the lower end bodies don't - but they also have most, if not all, of the features on the lower end bodies - so to cover as many settings as possible, spanning bodies in all price ranges, the best choice is the higher end body, which today is the R1. Unfortunately, I don't own an R1… so a HUGE thank you to Canon USA for getting me one to use for this show. Now, if you're not a Canon shooter.. DON'T RUN AWAY! While we are using the Canon EOS R1 for the examples today, whatever brand you use: Nikon Sony Panasonic Etc Most of today's cameras will have some equivalent to the settings we talk about… AF option names will change between brands, and even between models in the same brand, some may be more or less granular, or in different places in the menus EVEN for the same brands, but understanding these AF concepts will still help you get the most out of your camera, regardless of the brand. One last disclaimer: I also had some people comment on the last video that they wished I had inserted some B-Roll showing the features in action through the viewfinder, so you could see the AF moving and changing for something like a person running, or a bird in flight etc. Thank you to everyone that made suggestions, but again, with this video, I have made an intentional choice to not do that. There's a few production reasons for that choice, but the biggest thing for me is that I want this video to be as generic ...
