Ottawa is one year into its two-year temporary international student visa cap project, and post-secondary institutions across the country are heavily feeling the effects of a limited international tuition profit margin. Former Immigrations, Refugee and Citizenship Minister, Marc Miller, introduced the program of January 2024 which hopes of tightening up any immigration loopholes found within the student visa guidelines, as well as to alleviate housing and healthcare pressures brought on by the influx of students. But halfway through the plan, and cuts to dozens of programs and campuses are now starting to paint a clearer picture of what may be to come. Host Maria Kestane speaks to Gina Lorentz, Professor and Coordinator for Fanshawe College's Multimedia Journalism program and President of the Radio-Television Digital News Foundation for Canada, about what things are looking for students across the province and where the future of local journalism could potentially go from here. This week, host Rafael Otto speaks with Jenna Deml, our producer at Portland Radio Project, and two of her lifelong friends, Kai Russell and Justin Semke. All three of them happen to be on the autism spectrum, and today we have a chance to hear their stories – about what it was like growing up on the spectrum, how they have remained friends for so many years, and their experience in the education system right here in Portland. Guests: Jenna Deml (she/her) is a podcast producer and radio DJ currently studying for her Master's in Multimedia Journalism at the University of Oregon Portland campus. Her undergraduate degree was in both Psychology and Theatre Arts from the University of Puget Sound. So it is safe to say Jenna has always had a love for the arts and storytelling. In her free time, she likes to play Dungeons & Dragons, flex her trivia knowledge on a website called Sporcle, create Spotify playlists, watch the entire Studio Ghibli catalog on repeat, pet every cat or dog she sees, or read classic sci-fi/dystopian literature. Kai Martina Russell (they/them) is native to Portland, Oregon. They hold a degree in English Fiction Writing from Pacific Lutheran University and are employed in the retail industry. Their dream is to write and illustrate (and possibly compose for) an original fantasy/science-fiction extended universe, drawing inspiration from the many roleplaying games they and their friends have acted out over the years. Kai draws meaning in their life from stories, nature, and their beloved friends and family. Justin Semke (he/him) graduated from the Art Institute of Portland, and has been looking to become an 3D Environmental artist. He is also quite the fan of Kamen Rider, and loves creating stories with friends. He is a staunch optimist and tries to make the people in his life smile whenever possible. Summary: The three friends begin by recounting how they each met one another at different points throughout elementary school. They then disclose what lead to their diagnoses; what they remember about it, what changed for them, and any struggles they had at the time. The conversation shifts to their respective experiences in the education system here in Portland, and what the institution needs to improve on in order to better serve neurodivergent children. Since Kai identifies as genderfluid, they note and comment on the correlation between neurodivergence and gender-nonconformity, and how this ties in to their own personal journey. Closing out the conversation, the three each state what they would say to their younger selves, and comment on who and what makes them the most empowered to be their truest creative selves.

Join Christian Jones and Regan Bell with their guest, Tanner Stewart, as they chat about his love for John Grisham novels, specifically A Time To Kill. Tanner is a news anchor and reporter for WEAR Channel 3 News in Pensacola, Florida. Today, he shares why he gets himself lost in John Grisham novels when out of the newsroom. There's a lot to take away from this episode, so make sure to tune in and enjoy the show!   Hooked In Tanner discovered A Time To Kill when he was 16. Although he was not an avid reader, he became fond of the book. For Tanner, the John Grisham novel appealed to him because of the same Southern culture he grew up with. The book reflected much of Tanner's identity that he could not put it down. It felt as if he was at home. He spent so much time reading the first chapter, and the scene laid out in full detail was his favorite. Having read it twice, Tanner remembers how he envisioned himself becoming a lawyer because of the influence brought by Grisham's novel. The book also became his escape at the time he faced trouble within the family. His parents divorced, and he was separated from his brother, who went to college. A Time To Kill immersed Tanner into a world where he forgot his problems at the moment.   About Tanner Stewart: Tanner Stewart is a reporter and weekend morning anchor at WEAR Channel 3 News. Before moving to Florida, Tanner worked at WXXV News 25 in Gulfport, Mississippi as the evening news anchor. One of his first memories of working in television news came in 2017, covering Hurricane Nate on the Mississippi Coast.   Born in Memphis and raised in the Smoky Mountains, Tanner is proud to call Pensacola his home outside the Volunteer State. Tanner is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor's degree in Multimedia Journalism and a minor in Political Science.   When not in the newsroom, Tanner enjoys reading, training for his first marathon, and exploring new places along the Emerald Coast!   Outline of the Episode: [03:01] From Tennessee to Mississippi, and finally to Pensacola, Florida [05:03] Attraction to media – news, movies, broadcasting, and cameras [06:09] A typical day of a news anchor, as told by Tanner [08:13] When Tanner came as a reporter a few weeks earlier before COVID [11:12] Tanner's discovery of the book at 16 [14:32] Started with A Time To Kill and progressed to other John Grisham novels [15:41] The problem with film adaptations based on books [21:27] Differences between a book and a movie in terms of visualization [23:42] How technology has affected people's reading habits [28:00] Tanner's issues with A Time To Kill's movie adaptation [33:05] A bad experience of Tanner where the book played a role in it [34:47] Tanner's critique about books to mini-series instead of film adaptations [39:39] Less interest in crime dramas due to existing ones that are formulaic   Resources: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGE3YQr9SlShtM9cLLORcTg Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TannerTV Get Raw, Unedited Episodes, from FANtastic People, Access To Our Discord Channel and Submit Questions for Upcoming Guests: https://fantasticpeoplepod.supercast.tech/ Connect with Tanner! In episode 66 of the Close Knit podcast, I spoke to Masego Morgan and Stella Hertantyo of cncs_ (pronounced “conscious”). I so cherished this conversation with these two - it felt like a wonderful space to sit in our uncertainty and be candid about no knowing what is next. Masego is a sustainable fashion advocate, residing in the suburbs of Cape Town. Currently doing her postgrad in Sustainable Development, while working as a creative strategist for a local South African brand called Good Good Good - this may change by the time the episode is out since she's finding it difficult to balance the two and have a personal life. She's terrible at following instructions, whether it's a recipe or a design pattern. At the end of last year, Stella completed her B.A. in Multimedia Journalism and she is currently doing her Postgraduate Diploma at the Sustainability Institute in Cape Town. Stella is a slow living enthusiast and a lover of low-impact fashion. She is passionate about encouraging an approach to sustainability that is inclusive, accessible, fun and locally-centred, as we try to figure out how to create a regenerative future. When I'm not in front of my laptop doing uni work, you'll probably find me reading, writing, illustrating or baking/cooking. A dip in the ocean, or a walk in the mountains, are the two things that bring me the most peace. At the beginning of 2020, Masego and Stella created an online platform together, called cnscs_. They created cnscs_, because they wanted to create an online community where knowledge, ideas, and resources around sustainable living (especially in a local context) could be shared. They see cnscs_ as a space to introduce people to sustainable living and apply it to their lives in a way that's sustainable to them. Their focus is on telling and sharing African stories and decolonising the current sustainability narrative. They share interviews with lots of change-making people, resource-based articles that inspire positive action and spark thought in our sustainability school section, wish lists, moodboards, musings, and tips and tricks that we have learnt along the way. They talk loads about personal style and slow fashion, but also sprinkle in content that discusses other aspects of sustainability.

She investigates the idea of freedom and its connection to geopolitics, heritage and social structures, with a special interest in gender issues. Believing that image-making should engage the personal and collective consciousness, her work entangles documentary practices with performance elements as tools to reflect alternative realities. Olga has exhibited her work at Doha Fire Station art space (QA), Los Angeles Month of Photography, Head On (AU), Les Boutographies (FR) and Gallery Negpos (FR) among others. Some of her major projects include the long-term series Red Ruby in Myanmar, while in 2015 she participated in the pioneering Solar Impulse mission – the first-time attempt to circumnavigate the world using only solar power. Olga has travelled worldwide and extensively in Asia, producing photography and video on social and humanitarian issues. She has a extensive experience in photojournalism, collaborating with international media such as Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, The Economist, NBC News and Vanity Fair among others. Olga is the creative director of Saristra Festival Arts, a festival celebrating music and arts on Cephalonia Island, Greece. She studied photography at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens and in 2012 she earned her Master's degree in Multimedia Journalism from the University of Bolton, UK, while being based in Beijing, China.Through her work, Olga creates a stage to empower people to transform our perception of them - involving her subjects rather than presenting them. Her project "Chrysalis", a series of portraits of refugee women dressed up in the same golden rescue blankets that are handed out to hypothermic refugees upon arrival on the Greek islands, can serve as a perfect example. What once was a sign of vulnerability is transformed into a symbol of beauty and strength.Olga's work is also concerned with questions around home and identity, with a strong tangible love towards her native Greece while maintaining a critical distance - proving, to me at least, that love is in essence the acceptance of imperfection. Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/yellowvan)

Journalism is a tough industry to break into, but expanding your multimedia and broadcast skills is a great way to enhance your versatility and job prospects. For Chinese journalist Yuan Ren, who has worked as a Time Out magazine editor and a columnist for U.K. newspapers The Telegraph and The Prospect, transitioning into broadcast media helped her fire up her creativity and experiment with creative storytelling. In this episode, she shares her best tips and tricks for making the switch from print to digital journalism with NüVoices chair Joanna Chiu. The two also discuss what it is like to build a career in Western mainstream media as younger women of Chinese descent. Yuan is a fully bilingual journalist who has written about science, technology, Chinese culture, and current affairs. Originally from Beijing, she began as the Around Town editor at Time Out Beijing. Yuan was a regular contributor to The Telegraph's Wonder Woman column on Chinese women and gender, and a monthly columnist for Prospect magazine. She is now based in London and works as a producer and reporter for Bloomberg TV and the technology show Click at BBC World — see Yuan's post on Twitter for a video of the latter. She also loves to make video blogs about traditional Chinese food and restaurants. Follow Yuan for the latest in Chinese culture and food via YouTube and Instagram.Recommendations: Yuan: Get enough sleep and put your phone in a different room before bed. I like to track my sleep on my Garmin sports watch, which I have for running. Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer are all great apps for sleep and meditation (have it on your iPad, not phone), but many centers like the London Buddhist Centre offer live, guided meditations online. Staying active is so important, and I'm part of a running club — it's cheap and sociable, and you'll improve so fast you'll wish you joined earlier. There are lots of virtual races for runners, cyclists, and swimmers during lockdown, which you do solo but post results online. Strava is the social network for athletes worldwide. I'm catching up on Chinese TV dramas at the moment. Check out Douban (豆瓣) for ratings on documentaries, movies, TV, and books. When I miss Chinese TV, I get on Beiijng TV's website and watch live there. I also listen to Beijing Transport News radio via TuneIn when I go to bed! Joanna: Have no shame about indulging in guilty pleasures like Netflix reality TV dating shows, and solo YouTube karaoke sing-alongs is a great way to boost your mood while in isolation.
