ADU 1342: Should I just replace my Phantom 4P?

Is the Phantom 4P still relevant today? What are the best alternatives to the P4P? On today's episode we discuss about navigating new drones and keeping and using old and reliable drones such as the Phantom 4P. Our question is from Scott, who runs a drone business since 2017 and uses the P4P as his main drone and a Mavic Pro as backup. Scott would like to know if he should look at using other drones as his main drone and what would be the best drone as he looks to update his drones. Thanks for the question, Scott, today's question is something we have been asked and heard quite often and that is what drone to use and how to effectively use your budget to ensure you always have the best equipment. We discuss our answer to Scott's question by discussing how pilots need to look at the drones and their applications in today's drone market. Manufacturers today have increasing built drones for specific applications and keeping this aspect in mind helps pilots better understand drones and ensures they purchase the right equipment for their need. We then discuss if the Phantoms are still relevant today and this helps pilots understand if they can still purchase the Phantoms and where they can use it and if the Phantoms are best suited for various offerings. We are sure the Phantoms are probably the best in the business and we discuss how pilots can explore other drones if they do not have a Phantom. We also touch upon remote drone use and how these are newer projects that are being carried out by drone pilots. Lastly we discuss how pilots can be successful by better understanding client requirements and delivering to client expectations and how problem solving and working towards client success is an effective strategy to be successful in the drone industry. Tune in today to know more about drones, their applications, understand primary and secondary drones and being successful in the drone business !! The current model is popular with first responders so an outdoor tactical version would make sense. It shows larger motors with serrated blades, a built-in bright screen. It is equipped with a triple camera setup with a FLIR thermal cam and a 32x optical zoom. Parrot, a french company, is expected to build the drone in the US and will not include any Chinese-made part. Mavic Pro shot Instagram user @vandy007 posted images of his Mavic Pro after it was shot at with a rifle. The user reported that he was flying close to 400 feet and adjusting the settings on his camera and he heard a shot. He didn't think anything of it and just landed only to see the damage. The damage was mostly to the battery but it's amazing that the drone survived. Yes, it is a federal crime to shoot at an aircraft, including a drone… Update on the Gatwick incident Remember the Gatwick alleged drone incident in 2018? A couple had been falsely arrested in conjunction with the alleged incident. Their house was assaulted by police and they were held for 36 hours in December 2018. They sued and just settled $250,000 There was never any confirmed drone sighting and with hundreds of journalists and government official, no proof has been provided to date. Gatwick did however spend $6 million to install Anti-UAV Defense system. Over a $1 million has been spent investigating the supposed incident. Drone helps father/daughter in the river A drone was used to locate a father and his daughter whose canoe had capsized in the San Joaquin River in California. The drone followed a citizen who rescued the daughter and brought her back to land. The drone helped the fire department located the father who had stayed behind. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/rick-smith-298376199_antiochpd-apd-uas-activity-6677326574427238400-s4Oh/

DJI Mavic 3 Set to Hit Stores Earlier Than Expected, Autel Wins Landmark Legal Judgement Against DJI, DJI Mavic Air 2 Issue, Remote ID to Roll Out in 2021 Our biggest story this week is about the DJI Mavic 3. Regular ADU listeners might be aware that a new DJI drone with enhanced autonomous features has been in the works for quite some time now. Initially, we were expecting the DJI Mavic 3 to be released in summer 2020. However, strong Mavic 2 Pro sales and perhaps, gloomy economic conditions had put this drone on the backburner. But the latest developments might force DJI to come out with this new drone sooner than expected. In today's show, you will learn about Autel winning a patent dispute against DJI. Autel's patent makes it impossible to mount props incorrectly. And from this legal outcome, it is apparent that DJI had blatantly copied this clever engineering that Autel had originally developed. While this prop system is present on all old DJI drones like the Mavic 2 Pro and Spark, the new DJI Mavic Air 2 comes without it - which makes it possible to mount props incorrectly. So, what will the fate of old DJI drones like Mavic 2 Pro and Spark? Will this development prompt DJI to come out with the DJI Mavic 3? And, is this a good opportunity to get DJI drones at a hefty discount? Our next story is about Remote ID. The latest developments indicate that the FAA is all set to roll out Remote ID on a trial basis by 2021. This restrictive proposal has certainly galvanized the entire drone community - and you might remember how the Remote ID NPRM managed to rack up 54,000 comments. With most of the FAA staff furloughed due to the virus outbreak, how did FAA manage to process all these comments? Is the FAA even paying heeds to the concerns raised by the drone community? Other topics discussed on today's show include data security issues and FAA's technology partners for remote ID implementation. We hope you enjoy this show! Mike Jensen, from Jensen Films, has been in business for almost 30 years doing wedding and event videos and corporate videography. Mike always offered unique services to clients, such as 8mm film, 360 VR panoramas and aerial shots of wedding venues. In the mid-90s, he did his first aerial by renting an airplane and continued to get aerial footage by renting helicopters. At $400/hr, it was very expensive, but he gathered a reusable library of about 30 to 40 of the most popular wedding venues in town and says, “Before the drone revolution, my competitors weren't offering that.” In 2006, I created and produced the world record wedding video event in Sacramento, setting a new world record of 100 cameras to professionally film a wedding. David: “So when did you get into flying a traditional kind of quad copter setup?" When drones started to become reliable in the early 2000s, Mike didn't feel comfortable flying them himself, so he found a drone pilot online that was flying a lot over water. Finally in 2014, Mike got his license and purchased his first drone—a DJI Phantom 2. I started flying it for events and later upgraded it to the Autel X-star then to the Mavic Pro. Today although he flies an Autel EVO, his favorite drone to fly is the Mavic 2 Pro Zoom. David: “Do you use drones right now mostly as a supplement to your film business or have you gotten into any drone services?” Mike had an advantage of having a videography company first. At some point, his videography clients also need drone services, which made it an easy sell. One of Mike’s biggest clients is a local major construction company. They've hired him to go out every week and do visual updates--flying for 1-2 hrs, shooting 3-4 one-minute videos, 20-40 stills and a top down shot. Mike stitches all those together in Photoshop and delivers a megapixel image of the entire property from 400 feet looking down. He saves them a lot of money by providing that documentation, their project manager meets with corporate every week and needs to show them progress. David: “For a construction job where you'll shoot once a week and these projects take months, what do you typically charge for a job like that?” Mike is hired to fly once a week for 30 weeks and charges them $300 a flight. That includes 1-1 1/2 hrs of flying, culling images, making sure his videos look good, uploading and then sending them the link. This is an ongoing client, often bringing him onto another project as they’re finishing one up. David: “Were you actively reaching out to those types of clients or did they find you? How did that work come about?” I shot for many years for a large West Coast healthcare provider. They were building a medical office building where Mike lives in Sacramento and the construction company brought him on for their own projects. One job led to another. Most of my business at this point in my career is word of mouth. David: “Looking back to when you were first starting, can you think of tactics that might work in today's environment? For example, if you were starting in the drone business, didn't have history with Jensen Films, and wanted a drone only business, what do you think you would do first to get it going?” Mike says he’s expanded his video company and doing a lot of different things—drones are just one of them. For example, when he started doing photo booths, he got on Facebook and let everybody know by creating and posting short videos. Similarly, for 360VR work, they just started shooting some footage unpaid, posted it and let his friends know. A photographer friend knew about a huge condo project that was going up and needed 360 video. “What really helped me was letting the world know what I was doing and doing it well. I needed to WOW the first client I got and then over-deliver on the promises I’d made. It’s also important to continue to up my game. I’m always looking for ways to increase my skills. If you start standing still, that's a prescription to fail.” David: “So tell me a little bit about the VR stuff. When did you guys start doing that...what's that like?” One night when he was editing late, Mike stumbled on the website of a 360 videographer who’d created gorgeous 360 images of the Royal Danish wedding. Mike realized he needed to do that with his brides, so he bought the equipment and started marketing it. Since then, he’s made custom rigs for his drones and included Live 360 and Ground 360 in virtual wedding movies for his brides. Clients can link to it on Vimeo or Facebook from their desktop, laptop or phones, or use goggles. David: “How much do you charge for VR video?” Mike began charging $750 for VR wedding video, but with every new VR video, he’s raised the price to $1,000, $1,250 or $1500. It’s an add-on to a basic package for the day. An exciting thing he’s been using is the new Insta 360-1R, which is two cameras that mount on the top and bottom of the Mavic 2Pro and can shoot stills or video without that dead spot on top (see link at bottom for website for Insta 360-1R) David: “In the last five years or so, as drones have become much more affordable and the technology has gotten a lot better, how has that impacted your business, if at all?” Mike says he’s always been an early adopter because it's given him the advantage of being able to market something that no one else has. With the wedding 360s, there may be only five other people in the country that offer that for wedding packages. He tells his brides, “it's the only shot of your wedding day where you'll be able to see everyone in your wedding in one shot.” Mike says, “I’m never satisfied with where my business is. I'm always looking for different ways to help my clients put the dream and the goal of what they need and want into images.” David: “So you have corporate and weddings, you're doing construction stuff, some VR stuff and the photo booth stuff. Is there anything else that you have going on that you're excited about?” Jensen Films is contracted with a real estate company that brings in actors to stand-in inside luxury homes while Mike films them. It’s a type of lifestyle video that’s simple to do. Mike brings in the actors and, now that he’s been licensed for a number of years, he flies the drone himself.  It’s also in the contract that when the house sells, they’ll pay him an extra $750 to $1,000. He also helps them by posting to his social media and giving them a little bit of advertising from his end. David: “If you had some advice to give somebody who's just starting a drone business—whether it's video, documenting construction sites, or mapping—what direction would you provide to get started?" 1-Always deliver more than you promise. Clients have come back to him again and again because he always delivers more. 2-Don't get into this industry unless you have a passion, not only for the drone work, but for the business end as well. The drone is the backend of the business. 3-Continue to improve on not only your technical flight skills, but on your creative photo and video skills, composition, movement, lighting. Whenever Mike flies for a client, he’s looking for that epic shot that will wow his clients. Dominic is a Tacoma, WA-based real estate photographer. He was in the Air Force for years which is where he first picked up a camera. He loved it so once he got out, he got his own camera and thought he’d do journalistic photography. After recent elections, he decied he couldn’t do politics so he got a job with a car company doing their photography. He ended up bored. Then, although he’d thought doing real estate would be boring, this is now his full-time job.  Dominic is happy to report that every day during the busy season, he has plenty of work to do. He knew that with photography making money was going to be on the videography or real estate side. Drones were up and coming when he started in 2013, so he focused more on photography. In 2015 he found a random ad on FB asking for a real estate photographer. He went through training and the company that hired him—Cascade Pro Media—got him a drone. They have been a great alliance because they are consistently very booked and even often have to turn away work. He also has his own clients that he’s gotten from word-of-mouth, from being at the top of the SEO list for Tacoma, WA and via Instagram. He says it’s the best way to reach potential clients because agents browse Instagram when they’re sitting at an open house. Dom’s business is currently 50% what Cascade gives him and 50% what he has grown. He also now does several things—photography, videography, 3D tours and drone work. The drone has become more popular, having been added to 35 of the last 50 shoots. Dominic does work in Tacoma but also goes west towards Gig Harbor, east towards Mt Rainier and out to Puget Sound, where properties have a five-acre minimum. The drone goes up to 300 feet and gives you so much more so with real estate photography, Dominic is making more money than he did with all his photography jobs in the past five years. When Dominic got his license, the first drone he flew was the Phantom4 before he backed it into a tree (it can still fly but needs repair). He also used the Drone Launch Academy Part 107 prep course; he says he tells everyone about the quick and convenient set up, which is a great reminder of the military testing and also easy to get through. His second drone was a MavicPro, which fit perfectly in his bag so he could carry just the bag. Less than a week after, the MavicPro2 came out so he bought that. The MavicPro2 is now his go-to drone; the image and color quality make his images great. Dominic feels that knowing photography before he got a drone has helped his business grow. Dominic also says he grew up playing X-Box so the controls were easy (unless there was a tree behind him). Right now, his method for finding clients is through SEO, word of mouth but also: “Business Instagram is the best—I can specifically and strategically use hashtags. People often just need extra people when who they often use is booked up.” He is not actively going to real estate offices or networking. He says anyone can go to offices,   but the agents can’t see your stuff and they just shove your card under a table. David asked if Dominic ever tried to offer to shoot something for free. Dominic says he didn’t need to do that. Just from the gig with Cascade ProMedia, the first two months, he made over $7000/month. He pays them a percent of what he makes. But for what he gives them, they give him ten times that in the work they give him. At first, he had to pay a 30% fee, but after he became a drone photographer, that fee decreased to 20%. With this strategic affiliation, Dominic hasn’t had the discouraging feeling of having to find his own work. They also handle technical issues and his billing. Regarding what he’s charging in the Tacoma area, he mimicked the price sheet of the lead photographer. In Tacoma, his prices seem high, but when he goes north toward Seattle, because real estate is more expensive, they think he’s a deal. He charges $225 for photos and video; $150 for photos (interior and exterior), with a total flight time of 10-15 minutes. His full package of 25 photos (he charges by photo, rather than time) for a 3000 ft2 house is $275. Video is another $350. The drone (photo and video combination) is extra $225. Once the 3D tour (with Matterport) is added, there is a total fee of $1000 per house. He doesn’t scale for size of house; he does factor in time because a large house takes more time to take photos and to process them. His clients understand he’s standard, transparent and fair. During his busy times, he’s said his standard average monthly income during the busy summer season is $6-7 on the low end, up to $12K on the high end. Dominic has said that he’s sticking with real estate, not diversifying right now. He says trying to build relationships with construction for roofing needs to be done in the Winter season. Mastering and crushing his niche has allowed him to build a network and become a go-to person. He would like to add some more drone mapping outdoors on bigger properties. He says no one does it in Tacoma area at all. He also doesn’t find it hard to get work. Dominic says agencies are making sure the drone photographers HAVE the 107 license. They don’t want to handle the liability and are not as credible. “Separate yourself from other individuals. Fill the gap between older and younger generations. Understand who your client is and how to interact with them and then provide a good product. Find your own niche.”  He worked on separating his images by taking moving photos. He learned a lot in his college journalism experience. He was also a military cop so he was OK finding crime scenes and capturing raw emotions. He says, “Your auto is not always going to help you. Drone cameras are smart but you need to shoot manually too.” His largest challenges starting this business has been understanding money—budgeting, business licenses, etc. He also felt it was challenging to go into ventures with real estate agents. He says they are either laid back OR by the book and you don’t necessarily understand which is which. Some have become his friends and some are more proper, i.e. if he doesn’t send a grammatically correct email, they won’t do business with him. “It can be scary...this morning, one shoot cancelled, but another one came in right after. Running a business has made me better with money.” Dominic never has a schedule past two weeks and some people wouldn’t be able to handle that. Because he’s been making as much money as he does, and has a military paycheck, he is able to float with it. And he’s grateful to be doing it. S1/EP 5: David Dengler from Robotic Air Services

Drone to 1K Podcast by Drone Launch Academy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2019 51:40

David is a pilot with Robotic Air Services, a startup in Southern California that focuses on the construction industry—providing drone services using a subcontractor business model that, David says, works. Let him tell you how and why... Two yrs ago, David was working in construction with architecture background. Drones came on the scene and he saw need in as-builts and during construction needs. He became excited and started to put some interest into drones. Are they effective? Can they deliver? Could he create a profitable company? The following year, he built up the company which went full-time in June 2018 and David never looked back. It DID take his own initial investment (he took Drone Launch’s Part107), and he is now profitable. He goes to network events to educate people on what can be done with drones. It works—with a LOT of legwork. David says if you’re going to get into an industry, you need to know how to approach a niche market. For example, architecture is narrow, and marketing takes a lot of thought. He advises that you laser-focus on that. When he tells people he’s a drone pilot, people ask if he works for the army. He responds that he flies a “friendly” drone and is in construction. When he explains further, he says they are amazed. Everyone he talks to leads to something or someone else. When he started out, he had his equipment ready and his business ready. He had a LONG conversation with his CPA. David says—for him—he needed to cut the cord as an employee. If not, he would never have bitten the bullet. He DOES say, “Don’t do what I did, don’t jump off the board unless you know how to swim!” He says what he has going on right now works 75%; he has other plans for the rest of his success plan—risks never go away. Start-Up Equipment His initial equipment was a MavicPro. He jumped in understanding what he wanted to achieve with mapping and point clouds and that was the best drone at that time. He flew his drone for months before committing to the business. He did a lot of investigation by flying a few hundred hours over a few months. He did mapping, flying with intention of creating a point cloud, which is when you fly drone over a site in a grid pattern. He knew targeting a 3D model was going to be the goal. He had to be able to crunch data or deliver a CAD drawing. He says he got great training from Drone Launch Academy, especially as pertains to understanding the weather to fly the best pattern. The orthomosaic map is only the first level. What’s Happening Now? David wants to get into mining and civil construction. He is educating his current clients that the imagery is not just a flat map, but how they can use more of the data. Mapping usually hands off to general contractor. In one of his client’s cases, a general contractor questioned the civil engineer, so he hired David to fly a drone and map the site. He found out that, in some cases, the measurements were off by almost 3 feet. With the drone imagery the measurements are nailed more accurately. He sees this type of work as great opportunity because every time you are called in to work, you can educate people as to how much the drone can help them. “Education is the biggest thing in the drone business” Where Are The Clients? Getting clients is about talking to people and also about how and where to find business. David had to understand what he wanted to accomplish and the niche market, for him—architecture, engineering and construction. You don’t just buy a drone and get business. You have to put work and effort into it. He said you have to learn everything about an industry to talk to people on their level. If you are going into cinematography, he hopes you know how to take great pictures. It’s not putting the drone into the air that’s the hard part, it’s about knowledge about how to make it work as a business. David thinks through everything before the flight. It’s already been set up and checked so when the flight comes, it’s just the push of a button. First Projects & Growth Since going full-time, company started to make money positively in December, passing investment level in January. It only took two months for investment to be re-couped. He doesn’t want to put out numbers because in Southern CA, it’s expensive to live and work. He does say that his first bit of work was done pro-bono, but with organizations that matter. He worked with an organization that preserves portions of land. He asked about the quality of their map imagery. He offered to fly and provide imagery because they are a volunteer association. He says he wanted to begin by giving back FIRST before he focused on developing clients and his own business. That got his name out there and also allowed him to practice in the real world, delivering real world work to real world people. When he delivered, he asked who they knew that he could talk to. Doing that work gave him a portfolio of real work. David’s favorite part of having his own business is being his own boss. There’s nothing better. That also means you are responsible for yourself and it takes self-responsibility. He has to make his own rules, book business. If you crash, you are your own repairman. You are in complete control of your destiny. It’s great and can be terrifying. Yet he wouldn’t change much nor does he regret much. He has been advised to seek venture capital, but then he’d have to focus more on the business, but then you lose autonomy. If you start a corporation, again it goes back to having a really great niche. David says what he is just another contractor—HE can go out and talk to people, that is good enough. Running his own business just makes it less complicated. He just wants to run and grow a good business. His long research period told him real money in drones would be in construction and inspections...simply because it will save money. American drone pilot Brandi Papania is having a blast flying her drone in Hong Kong. Brandi is a copywriter by day, who enjoys flying around the tiny island at night. Let's hear about what it's like flying a drone in Hong Kong from Brandi! Brandi Papania got into drones recently while watching her friend James fly his Mavic Pro. Loving what he was doing with drones, she decided to jump right in and picked up the Mavic 2 Pro! Not a bad choice for a first drone! And guess where she purchased it? Right at the DJI flagship store in Causeway Bay! She was able to test out the Mavic 2 Pro in the caged flying area, and walked out with the drone a few minutes later. Awesome! She's currently flying recreationally, however she's honing her skills in hope of jumping into the commercial side of things when she returns to the USA. Once she's back home in Ohio, she's considering flying in real estate and a couple of other industries. Until then, she's going to continue honing her flight skills, and work towards perfecting her work. During our chat, I struggled to remember the name of the BBC drone pilot that I chatted with a few years ago. Tania, I apologize, and here is a link to make up for it! Now back to Brandi, she's going to be taking a 3 month vacation before returning to the USA later this year. She's going to be travelling around the globe, and looks forward to researching all the drone laws in every country she visits. First up will be Tonga, French Polynesia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea, and I can't wait to see her drone footage! I hope you enjoyed this drone chat with Brandi, and if you like the show, please share it with your other drone friends

Tom Noske is a drone pilot from Melbourne, Australia, that is creating beautiful pieces of art with his drone. Yeah, we're going to learn all about his shooting style and editing process during this chat! Tom is currently flying the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, and absolutely loves the larger Hasselblad sensor. He was flying the original Mavic Pro, but since upgrading he's caught the bug for larger sensors. Yeah, that means that the Inspire 2 is on his list for his next purchase. On the commercial side of things, Tom is working with sports teams and fitness professionals. He works with rugby teams, rowing teams, and wants to get into shooting music videos. He's also doing corporate work like real estate, but admits that he doesn't like it as much as the other areas. His editing workflow starts in Adobe Lightroom and then moves into Photoshop. He starts with camera calibrations, tone curves, white balance, and some other basic adjustments in Lightroom. Once in Photoshop, he adds and removes new things, creates atmosphere, moves subjects around, and then returns to Lightroom. Why back to LR? Well, you'll have to listen in to get that detail! One of Tom's biggest tips is that you should always shoot at sunrise or sunset. He loves using the natural light, and creating large scale photos. How about you? Do you like shooting at sunrise or sunset? Do you find that in the summer sunrise is too early to catch, so you find that sunset is easier to make? Ok I hope that you enjoyed this week's chat with Tom Noske from Melbourne. As you can see from the photo above, and his instagram profile, he is creating some incredible art. Are you fired up to try and create something along the same lines as well? Show us what you've got! And if you liked the show, please share it with someone else who loves drones :)

Clay Sweetman, based in New South Wales, Australia, is a drone pilot who also sells drones for a living. Two and a half years ago, Clay had a hip replacement, and during his downtime he pulled the trigger on his first drone. He chose the DJI Mavic Pro as his first drone, and has had an absolute blast flying it ever since. The biggest Mavic Pro feature that Clay likes, is the camera's portrait mode orientation. If you have a look at his instagram, you can see that he loves it as all of his shots are straight down in portrait mode. If you're not flying a Mavic Pro and want to shoot portrait mode, you have three options. First,  you can take a series of photos and stitch them together, or crop them into a portrait orientation, or lastly just rotate your drone 90 degrees if you're shooting straight down. Easy! Clay loves shooting during the golden hour, and always shoots raw. When it comes to editing, he likes to bring down the exposure to bring the blacks down, and then the whites up as much as he can. He emphasizes tropical greens and blues, while keeping images as sharp as possible. He also gives some of his credit to Merr Watson and Emily Kaszton's editing style, and their awesome Lightroom presets. In addition to his instagram gallery, you can also check out Clay's print store over at Riptide Prints. Adrian Jones is a drone pilot from California, who has recently started his drone business. He's working full time in the IT industry, but is looking to make a break and start working with his drones full time. Since starting out with drones, he's flown the Mavic Pro, Phantom 4 Pro, and now the Mavic 2 Pro. When he gets the ball rolling, he's looking at creating a unique system on his site to let Realtors choose their shoots. His plan is to shoot a series of movements and scenes, and then allow realtors to pick which shot they'd like to employ. He's also knows that some Realtors will allow him creative freedom, and won't use a system like that, but he hopes for those that are hands-on this will be a great system. Since he's new to the drone world, I asked Adrian if he wishes that he would have done anything differently. His recommendation was to not spend too much too early. It's easy to spend, thinking that you're going to be making bank at the start, but it's better to wait. He regrets purchasing an expensive iMac computer and some other equipment, when he should have been out concentrating on creating content and developing his business. Great advice Adrian! We also discuss the possibility of certain drones sending information back home. I wrote an article covering off my thoughts on it, and think it's time to make an update based on some info that Adrian provided. I wasn't aware, but apparently there are app developers working on blockers to ensure that your data stays with you, and isn't transferred back to an unintended server. What are your thoughts?

We take a quick look at the city of Helsinki's decision to go for a hiring system that removes all personally identifying info (eg sex, age, mother tongue) in an effort to get beyond bias in hiring. It seems to have worked for orchestras; could it work for city governments? Cathi is also pretty obsessed with drones these days, like the tiny dji Mavic Pro (see the review at New Atlas) Would you like a drone of your own? How should they be regulated in light of the recent events at Gatwick airport? And as always this time of year, the greatest Christmas movie ever, The Thin Man!

Can you imagine a better perspective? On today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome two shooting buddies who, perhaps not so coincidentally, happen to be talented and inspirational landscape photographers. Ryan Dyar and Miles Morgan are both well recognized for their gorgeous “land-based” landscape photography and post-production skills, but over the past few years, both have incorporated drone photography into their workflow. Our show today is a discussion of their aesthetic approach, and of the techniques and gear Dyar and Morgan use to make their stylized landscape images with the DJI Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro 2, and Phantom 4 Pro drones.   The topics we discuss are the differences between aerial photography and drone photography (Morgan is also a pilot) and, of course, composing from a tripod as opposed to a monitor image relayed from a few hundred feet in the air. We also talk about camera settings, long-exposure photography, drone choices, flying techniques, how to handle inclement weather, scouting locations, and the legal restrictions on drone operation. It is quite an informative episode but what also becomes clear is the camaraderie between Dyar and Morgan and how their friendship not only informs when and where they photograph but also how they work, how they view photography as a practice and certainly the influence each has upon the other in terms of their shooting styles. Join us for this enjoyable conversation. Guests: Miles Morgan and Ryan Dyar Photograph © Miles Morgan

The Mavic Pro was a revelation. It wasn't a perfect product, to be sure, but it represented a new paradigm for DJI and the consumer drone industry in general. It was compact, folding up into a nice, portable package, while still being portable enough to shove into a backpack. It was also the beginning of a new line for the company, paving the way for the Mavic Airand Spark — both even more portable than their predecessor.

Flying the Mavic Pro for the last year I can say I'm extremely satisfied with the drone overall. I only have 2 major gripes.
