One of the biggest problems facing our culture today is the way in which we continuously subdivide ourselves into smaller and smaller tribes. People find themselves unable to "get along" with anyone who does not think exactly like they do. The church can often suffer from the same form of divisiveness. This is unfortunate because the true strength of the local church is found in its unity. A diverse group of people — all dwelling together in unity around the Gospel — can bring glory to God. Over the next few weeks we'll discuss how we are to remain unified within various convictions about cultural issues. The Apostle Paul was clear in his teachings to the early church and we can learn much from his principles and practices. Anxiety is one of the most powerful, intimidating, and altogether monstrous forces in our current culture. Have you ever wondered if Jesus was afraid? The answer might surprise you! Follow along as we dive into a special formula seen in multiple places and stories throughout Scripture for overcoming fear.
Last week we saw how the Scriptures clearly describe Satan as a “roaring lion” whose primary intent is to stir up anxiety and create fear in your life. And Satan's no dummy. He uses every trick in his playbook and every tool at his disposal — from the results of your last physical exam to academic and corporate pressures or even Hollywood entertainment and the mainstream news media. The truth is that when you let fear sit and marinate in your life, it will get far bigger than is actually warranted for the situation. There's good and healthy fear, but there's also bad fear that can lead us to make poor decisions. Jesus has given us the wisdom and ability to distinguish between them and we'll see how this morning. Grab a friend and head over to Northside at 10:30 for tons of fellowship, plenty of live worship and hot coffee, and the next installment of Pastor Stan's series “The Climb.”
Crouching. Prowling. Deceiving. Devouring. These are the action verbs Scripture uses to describe how our Enemy wars against us. In one of the earliest conversations with mankind, God tells us that sin is "crouching at the door" trying to dominate us. Fear and anxiety are two of the most treacherous battlegrounds where Satan often finds much success. Since 2020, depression and anxiety prescriptions have reached an all-time high. Recent reports from Forbes and the American Psychiatric Association revealed that anxiety disorders grew from about 298 million people to 374 million. This is a 25% increase. Of course, you won't find everything in governmental or medical records. Drug, alcohol, and sex addictions, isolation and insulation, extreme apathy, and obsessive over-achievement are all indicators that stress is controlling more people than we realize or care to admit. Thankfully, God has answers from Genesis to Revelation on how to overcome the evil strategies of the Enemy. How to scale the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that feel like mountains in our lives. Over the next few weeks, we will study how Satan schemes against us and how we can effectively battle anxiety, fear, and sin as we navigate the Christian life and strive to follow the plans of God. We have a Guide. He's given us a compass. We don't have to be lost.
