This week we look at Jesus' instruction on how to pray and what to pray. Praying the Psalms is an ancient practice worthy of the follower of Jesus' attention. This past Sunday, we practiced praying through the opening lines of Psalm 51 together.
After finishing chapter 5 last week, we are taking a step back and examining the opening once more to Jesus' explosive sermon on the mount. What does it mean to be blessed? What does it mean to be poor in spirit? On what earth is mourning ever a blessing? These are the key questions we are asking this week, and much like any careful examination of Jesus' teachings, these questions crack open a wider story at the heart of what it means to be human in God's good world.
Loving your enemies seems like a bad idea, but for Jesus, it was central in becoming the kinds of people who look like our Father in heaven. Loving your enemies isn't just a nice thing to do; it's a signifier of the people of God, living under the reign of God, in the kingdom of God. But, man, is it hard to do. This week: Matthew 5:43-48
Jesus' entrance as the long-awaited Messiah-King establishing his rule and reign completely turns the world upside down. In his sermon on the mount, Jesus gives his manifesto for what life is like in his kingdom. This often means that Jesus gets into our business a bit to talk about the things we don't want to. This was the case last week with sexual desire and it's the same this week with marriage and divorce. It can seem, at first, like Jesus is overly stiff, but when we dig a little deeper and examine the bigger story behind what he's saying, we might just discover God's heart behind marriage and his ultimate plan to redeem divorce.
This week begins with an interview with Luke and Abby Jones, and moves to a sermon through Jesus' teaching on what it means for his followers to be like salt in the world, and a city on a hill. Sermon begins around the 21:29 mark
Can you have doubt and still be a faithful follower of Jesus? What does it look like to doubt God faithfully? Is that even a thing?
This ends our three-part mini-series on Psalm 19, and it poses the question, "What are Christians to do with sin?"
During the Summer months, we often examine the great songs and prayers collected in the book of Psalms. The Psalms are an incredible resource for the church as they teach us how to pray, how to rejoice, and how to bring our pains and fears before the God who saves. Join us on Sunday mornings and invite a friend for our Summer in the Psalms series.
"Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more." We delved into Psalm 130 this morning, a beautiful Psalm that invites us into the full grace of God that is lavished upon us when we cry out from the depths of our sin, fears, and failures. This week marks the final sermon in our series through the Letter of James. James has been an incredible exploration of not only what it means to have faith, but to live that faith out in community. In this final address from Paden, may we learn to lean on one another, to pray diligently for one another, and to dive deep into our communal relationships. This weeks passage: James 5:13-20 What's next: Summer in the Psalms
We took a short nine week break from our James series "Put Faith to Work" but we are back! As we step back into this difficult, charging, wisdom giving, punch-in-the-gut book, we jump straight into a difficult one: what does being a faithful apprentice to Jesus have to do with my money? The wisdom James has for us is profound, provocative, and piercing.
