What are you actually doing when you read the Bible? Interpretation. Every time we open the text, we're already choosing which questions to ask, which lenses to bring, and whose interests get served by the answers we land on. In this episode, I sit down with Jennifer Garcia Bashaw and Aaron Higashi, authors of Serving Up Scripture, to talk about what responsible interpretation looks like, why certainty works against it, and how the same passages have been used both to enslave and to liberate. We also walk through different types of questions to ask while reading scripture.Jennifer Garcia Bashaw is a professor at Campbell University and an ordained Baptist minister. In this concluding message of Matthew 13, Pastor Karl unpacks the final three parables of Jesus — the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Net — and challenges the common interpretations most of us have grown up hearing.Rather than reading these parables through a modern American lens, Pastor Karl takes us back into a first-century Jewish mindset to uncover what Jesus was really communicating. The treasure hidden in the field isn't something we purchase with our devotion — it's a picture of Jesus himself, who in joy gave everything to redeem his chosen people. The pearl of great price wasn't a treasure to the Jews at all, which is exactly the point: Jesus was revealing the shocking mystery that Gentiles — the unclean, the outsiders — would be included in the kingdom of God. And the parable of the net reminds us that not all roads lead to heaven, and that a day of separation is coming.Pastor Karl also draws a striking connection to the book of Ruth, showing how Boaz purchasing the field to gain Ruth as his bride foreshadowed what Jesus would do for his people — buying the field to possess the treasure within it.The message closes with one of the hardest passages for any pastor to preach at his own church: Jesus returning to his hometown, only to be met with familiarity and low expectation. The takeaway is pointed — low expectation limits reception. We all experience spiritual hunger or malnourishment at various points in our faith journey. The Importance of Taking “Spiritual Nibbles” A common misconception is that “good Christians” must spend hours in Bible study for it to count. Lynn challenges this, likening such expectations to serving someone a Thanksgiving feast when they need a simple piece of toast. If you're malnourished or spiritually weak, feasting isn't possible—you start with a nibble. The Recipe provides a gentle method to reconnect with Scripture, even when motivation and strength are low. Sometimes, reading and meditating on a single verse is enough. One “taste” of God's Word can reawaken spiritual appetite and begin to strengthen your soul. 4. Permission to Be Messy Many avoid engaging with God because of perfectionism—thinking spiritual practices must be beautiful, well-organized, or profound. Lynn encourages the opposite: make a mess! She tells stories of scribbled journals and a “messy kitchen” as metaphors for the normal, chaotic process of spiritual growth. The goal is connection, not perfection. 5. And faithfulness means showing up—in prayer, in persistence, in expectation. So today, let us pray not only for the comfort of our hearts, but for the transformation of the world. Let us take our place as image-bearers, co-laborers, and co-heirs. Let us believe that God is still listening—and still acting. Because He is. There's only one way to find out what might happen when we truly pray like this. Let's begin.
